Bamboo Cutter Daughter's 5 Impossible Tasks

In the ancient Japanese folk story "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," he finds a daughter 3 inches tall in a stalk of bamboo. She grows into an incomparable beauty, and all the men of the realm wish to catch a glimpse of her, and the bold among them want her hand in marriage. Unfortunately for them, Kaguya-hime (the daughter) has no interest in marriage. And yet, 5 suitors continue to express their ardor for months, even years and beseech the bamboo cutter to speak with his daughter. In response, she assigns each suitor a task. If any of them accomplish this task then she will marry the one that succeeds. These are the tasks she assigns (each suitor is assigned a different task):

1. To obtain from India the stone begging-bowl of the Buddha
2. To fetch a branch of a tree that grows on the mountain in the eastern sea. It's roots are silver, the trunk is gold and the fruits are pearls.
3. To bring a robe made from the fur of Chinese fire-rats
4. To fetch the jewel that shines five colors found in a dragon's neck
5. to present to me a swallow's easy-delivery charm.

When informed of these tasks the nobles and princes exclaimed, "Why doesn't she simply say, 'Stay away from my house!'?" They then left in disgust. Yet each prince attempted (and failed) to achieve their task.

The swap? To create 5 cards- each card to represent the items to be obtained by the suitors. (So your first card would be the Buddha's bowl, the 2nd would be the tree branch, etc...) And what, pray tell, is the swallow's easy-delivery charm? Well, that remains unknown, though it has to do with laying eggs. All Middle Counsellor Isonokami got for his troubles was a handful of bird droppings and a broken back. This should make for some creative cards...

Allen, I love your new user name :)

pancake machine
02-22-2008, 01:25 AM
Glad to see folks coming in. Yes - pancake machine. In truth, I probably should have stuck with my usual name until the transition period was over, but my kids suggested pancake machine and I thought it too much fun to pass up.

02-22-2008, 01:39 AM
Great new username! By the way, my cards have not gone out yet. I hope to get them mailed in the next few days.

pancake machine
02-22-2008, 09:04 AM
No worries pumpkincoach - the deadline still feels far off, so you can even take 3 or 4 days if you want ;)

pancake machine
02-22-2008, 11:11 PM
Thanks to those that have checked in so far. I'm going to do a little searching by the old screennames - so if you don't see an asterisk by your name could you PM me or post to the swap? Thanks

02-22-2008, 11:11 PM
Allen - I just pointed Tiaragoth over here, so she should show up in the next few days.

Hello again, everyone...can't wait to see pics of what you've created for this one.

02-23-2008, 01:24 AM
Scrampersue was going in for knee surgery yesterday, I'm sure she'll join us as soon as she can.

02-23-2008, 10:19 AM
I am here :jiggy:

02-23-2008, 02:05 PM
As you marked me (Gretchen) received, you probably also know that I have a new name: egod (not a comment, just a shortening of my maiden name). As you already had my cards, everything having to do with them is still marked Gretchen.

02-23-2008, 05:21 PM
Hi Allen!
It took me a while, but I am here!
a.k.a. dragonflygal987

pancake machine
02-23-2008, 11:16 PM
Thanks for everyone that has let me know so far. I hope that ScamperSue's surgery went well and that she came through with flying colors. I have 10 people left that I am not sure about. 2 of them have already submitted cards so they are part of the swap, but you may not be able to leave feedback.

Otherwise - all is good. Except that Gretchen changed her name when she came to the new site. Geez - now who would do something like that! (oh, hey, wait a sec...)

02-24-2008, 02:55 AM
I'm here at the new site too as Jitterbug. Still want to be a part of this. Was thinking of tying to carve stamps for these - still in the planning stages! :twitcy:
Hi to all! JLB

02-24-2008, 02:55 AM
Hey Jitterbug, Topacelot has been looking for you

02-24-2008, 02:58 AM

Dhawktx - Incredible begging bowl!

03-01-2008, 03:36 AM
Here are my first 3 cards. (My scanning quality is not that great, especially with colored pencil.) I wasn't brave enough to attempt the stamp carving yet.

Pancake Machine, please pm me with your address. I have sketches for the last two that I will be making into cards this weekend.

03-01-2008, 10:44 AM
Allen~ my cards FINALLY got mailed yesterday.

03-01-2008, 01:04 PM
Jitterbug - Those are great cards! My favorite is the bowl (which I am finding that's maybe my favorite when anyone posts...)

pancake machine
03-01-2008, 03:35 PM
Awesome Jitterbug. I really like your tree. super cool

03-01-2008, 04:00 PM
My cards are ready to be mailed. I absolutely L-O-V-E-D this swap. I really had fun with it. Hopefully, you'll be able to tell that from my cards.

All 5 cards are in my gallery. I can't attach the pics to the thread without making them teeny-tiny.

pancake machine
03-01-2008, 06:21 PM
Fun indeed! What a great approach you chose - love the cards and can't wait to see them.

03-02-2008, 05:47 AM
Thanks for this great swap, Pancake Machine. Everyone has such creative ideas. It's fun to see all the interpretations.
Here are my last two. I will be mailing the cards to you sometime this week.

03-02-2008, 07:21 PM
Here's my fire rat robe (say THAT three times fast!) ;)

03-02-2008, 10:44 PM
Love that robe Jitterbug and Donna! Great job!

pancake machine
03-02-2008, 11:04 PM
I'll second pumpkincoach. I know Coffeelatte is enjoying the Buddha bowls (me too), but I must say that I'm really enjoying the fire rat robes. They've been stupendously fergalicious!!

Okay - so actually I'm liking everything.

03-03-2008, 07:44 PM
Jitterbug, your dragon is really outstanding!

03-03-2008, 10:32 PM
Allen~ Are my cards there yet? Should be soon...

03-05-2008, 09:14 PM
Hi all - does anyone know yatsu, jenniferm, kaypendragon, insanebrainpain, or krzykitty? I've been trolling the members list some, but cannot verify that any of them have made it over. It is okay with kaypendragon & krzykitty - at least in the sense that they already sent me their cards and I can let them know about this site when I mail them their returns. (Although we can't really leave feedback for them)

But not sure about the other 3. If you are out there and changed your name, could you drop me a line?

03-15-2008, 08:05 PM
my cards are in the envelope and going in the mail monday morning!

03-17-2008, 11:00 AM
I'm not sure I checked in here as I had already sent my cards to you before the other site folded (seems like years now). I'm sure that those cards are signed Gretchen and I, like you, have a new name at this site. If you could just put "egod" somewhere on those cards, I would appreciate it. I have not reloaded my cards that were on the other site yet, nor figured out how to post them in threads. I'll do that if I learn how. Perhaps that would also help people identify where the cards are coming from.

odds n ends
1. Good suggestion Gre- er - Egod (well, Erin really). I will try and remember this.
2. Looking forward to Stormarela's cards.
3. Cards still due April 9th, but I am opening the withdraw date. Mind you, I don't want anyone to withdraw, but if you need to, go ahead & PM me.
The pancake -er- Allen

03-17-2008, 01:15 PM
I'm doing well on all my cards but the BUddha's bowl...still struggling on an idea for that one!

03-17-2008, 10:02 PM
Here's my swallow's easy delivery charm!

What addy do I send them to?

03-17-2008, 10:58 PM
AWESOME charm! All of your cards were sooo fabulous!

03-19-2008, 01:49 PM
I finally got them on Flickr. www.flickr.com/photos/egodc I see I'm repeating myself. I WILL learn all of this stuff. dhawktex, I love your cards. Wow!

03-19-2008, 11:59 PM
Thanks egod!

However, I feel the need for a disclaimer: The branch was the only thing I "drew," everything else is Photoshop collage and manipulation. Not that I didn't spend beaucoup time on them! LOL! :D

So, (tongue firmly in cheek...) if it's my wonderful composition work, my delicate sense of color, my artistic flair or my masterful use of the tools at hand, I'll take those kudos!

BTW, I really like what you did with the swallows charm...very nicely executed - I love the tag!

Awesome dhawktx! I know that Jenn (of mynameisjenn fame) has sent her cards too. I'm looking forward to all. I can't wait to see dhawktx's wonderful composition work, delicate sense of color, artistic flair and masterful use of her hand held tools! (seriously though - your cards are wicked cool & your semi-mocking accolades are actually apt)

03-20-2008, 06:33 PM
I agree with Allen. Thanks for the comment on my swallow's charm. I was pleased with that one too.

03-20-2008, 07:11 PM
egod~ Awesome cards! I love the golden tree branch!

03-20-2008, 07:13 PM
dhawktx~ photoshop collage is still art, whether you "drew" it or not! No different than skillful collage on paper. I know I can't do the photoshop thing. Too many confusing things to learn about layers, LOL.:biglaugh: I love your cards and kthey are wonderful!

03-20-2008, 08:12 PM

03-31-2008, 10:34 PM
Indeed Stormarela - great cards -can't wait to see them. I received simply wonderful cards from fingers and cmarois today.

Every time I see new sets I marvel at how folks have interpreted the challenge.

03-31-2008, 11:25 PM
I love the challenge of making cards to fit the story... Sometimes it takes me a long long time to get my idea, but when I do, I enjoy it! So Allen, whats your next intriguing swap?

pancake machine
04-01-2008, 12:18 PM
Well - I have been struggling with illustrating a poem from ancient Japan for over a year. I might float it out as a swap to 1) force myself to finish it and 2) to see how everyone else handles/ improves upon my meager ideas. Corrie04 had asked about this too and at the time I didn't have an idea. Now I do, but it won't happen until the summer. I've gotten extremely busy with work and it won't calm again until early June.

Excellent cards from Yatsu came in today. No foolin'

04-02-2008, 10:58 AM
I've posted pictures in my gallery...

04-02-2008, 03:32 PM
For the life of me I can't find my fire robe!!! Rats! (Pun intended) This has been a WEEK, to say the least, and it is only half over. Once I re-create that card, I will send my cards off. They should still make it in time, though it's going to be closer than I'd like!

04-03-2008, 12:35 PM
I found my robe (thank goodness--that was a lot of tiny blanket stitching!), so my cards will go out in Friday's mail. I'll update this post to confirm that when they go out.

04-03-2008, 03:19 PM

I very much hate doing this, but I am 95% certain that I am going to be delayed getting your cards back to you. Pretty much I just got hit with the perfect storm at work. I agreed back in mid-February to teach a new class which I haven't taught before. Now, I just found out that another project that I thought would be later or sooner will be here on April 9th, give or take a day. That project has to be complete in 2 weeks. I don't know what this will do to my ability to keep up my class preparations.

So, that leaves me throwing myself on the mercy of the swap - which I did not want to do at all. The best case scenario is that I can get the project knocked out in a crazy week and maybe attend to the cards by the 18th. Worse is if it takes me the full two weeks, which leaves me around the 23rd or 24th. Worst case is that it throws me off on class preparation and I am frantically trying to keep up. My class ends June 6th.

Honestly though, I doubt that it will be the worst of cases - probably late/end of April. I will try and keep folks abreast of what is going on - if you are concerned send me a PM or email. It is with deep regret that I even have to do this at all. Maybe I will be able to figure something out and get them out nearer the due date, but that looks much less likely now. I'll try to keep everyone up to date as I can, and rest assured that I will get them out. Again, I am sorry that I have to do this.

04-03-2008, 04:12 PM

Nope, I say, Hang 'im! :realmad: No mercy!

:biglaugh:Sorry, couldn't keep a straight face on that one!

Fine by me if it takes a little longer...looking forward to when they get here!

04-04-2008, 12:10 AM
No problem for me either! Thanks for letting us know and I hope you are able to weather your storm with perfect navigation!

04-04-2008, 09:26 AM
No problem for me, Mr. Pancakemachine...send when you are able.

04-04-2008, 10:29 AM

Thanks everyone - maybe- if I'm lucky - the publisher will be slower then they said and I won't get it until the 10th or 11th (I'm doing the index for a book). If that happens then this may have been for naught - but the way it is shaping up I thought it best to keep everyone in the know.

04-05-2008, 01:34 AM
No worries Allen :D
Mine going postal in the am. I am sending 2 sets...one set is for you

Sallyann's cards came in and they are fantastic! I haven't heard from insanebrainpain, and they haven't been on this site since Feb 28th so I am going to assume that she/he dropped out. So - all of the cards have been received. I'll let you know when they go out. And - just one final wow! what a fantastic collection of cards - a really impressive group! Thanks to one and all for joining. (even that Texan hawk whose gonna string me up!! )

So - my brief freak out did not come to pass- the indexing gig hasn't come in yet, so with the help of the elder daughter and the preoccupation of the younger, I was able to get all of the cards out today. If you'd let me know as you receive, that would be great. I think all will be pleased.

04-11-2008, 11:26 PM

Awesome to see that cards are reaching folks. I've been asked a few times now about my future swap ideas - I do have one, but not until June/July - basically it is going to illustrate each line of a haiku from the Heian era of Japan. I have been struggling with the first line for over a year, and is the only time I have completely scrapped two completed cards. So - what better idea then to take something I'm struggling with and turn it into a swap? But - that is for later- I just got my indexing job today, and still have weeks of lectures to prepare....

04-15-2008, 11:15 AM
Poor pancake machine man, swallowed up by the great, grinding academia machine. Some poor, but fun alliteration for you! Please let me know via pm when you do list the new Haiku swap. It sounds interesting! I just got done teaching 4 10-11 year olds the wonderful art of Haiku last week. This week it is the beauty of the couplet, then the quatrain and finally, hopefully, the sonnet. Wish me luck!

04-15-2008, 02:16 PM
5 Impossible tasks showed up in my mailbox today!!:rolleyes:Thanks to Allen, the pancake man:jiggy: for hosting such an interesting swap and Many, many thanks to:

Kaypendragon (Laura Cordes)---I see you are not a member, do you have a new name???? I'd like to leave you rep.
thanks, Sue

ok so here are mine followed by the ones I rec'd.
the scans don't do them any real justice...but

my bowl is made from 'stone" cardstock with gold leafing pen, the tree is metallic gold and silver with little 'pearl beads"
the robe is on Mica cardstock so the whole card is shiny
I found a neat image on the internet of a stone with light blue, dark blue, green, purple and white..I used crystal effects on it, and raised it up with a pop dot...the ATC is pink mica Cardstock.
The swallow is "carrying" the easy delivery charm...it is stitched with gold metallic floss

the rec'd ones:Buddha's bowl collage and handdrawn. tree is mettalic gold and silver with jewels. Robe is handdrawn and the Bkgd. is flourescent orange.
Dragon is hand drawn and the swallows delivery is a digital collage.

Hey Sue - unfortunately I don't have any other sets then yours and the cards I selected for myself. It would have been a good idea, but I was just happy to get them off in a timely manner.
BTW - my eldest daughter absolutely loved your easy delivery charm

well, maybe everyone could upload an image of what they got...just a thought.
I'd love to see all the work.:wubclub:

The ones I sent in are still at my Flickr site. I agree that I'd like to see them all. I just figured out how to move them here. That is four of them. I'll get the other in another post.

04-15-2008, 04:34 PM
I could only show five; so here is the other one. You're right. The scans leave something to be desired--mainly anything that is metallic or pearlescent shows as a flat color. Now, would you like the ones I received that have not been posted uploaded?

04-15-2008, 04:55 PM
Here are mine:

Here is my last one.

If you want to see my set I sent in they are in my gallery. I still haven't been able to figure out how to put them in a thread :unsure::no:

04-15-2008, 08:07 PM
These are the four I got plus the fire rat's robe from Allen. They are by Marla412; Corrie04; Jenn Erwin; and Cherylann.

Sally Ann's are awesome ..love the robe!!

Some beautiful cards -- my envie arrived yesterday and **I am not at home**! So when I am back on Friday and able to enjoy them I will scan and post what I got...

There are some fantastic cards in this swap, Allen -- and let me know when you post the haiku trade. I belong to a group where we are (in theory) supposed to write and post a haiku every morning. Sometimes it's amazing what comes out of that exercise...

Pumpkincoach - I love the swallow card that you created! Lovely work!

I got my great returns! I left feedback for our lovely pancake machine of a host (many thanks). I've left rep points for all the folks I received cards from but kaypendragon, who doesn't appear to still be here (correct me if I'm wrong--I got her lovely fire rat robe!). Thanks also to Codesmoom, mynameisjenn, sallyann, and fingers for GREAT cards!

You are correct. I haven't been able to find kaypendragon on the new site. I included a note in her returns, so perhaps she will join.

04-18-2008, 11:50 AM
I've got mine, thanks lavendarlizard, corrie04,meredeth,christal & pancake machine.
i hope you enjoy my cards as much as i enjoyed making them
will leave rep when i can, cus the system says i have to spread rep around before giving...

04-18-2008, 04:22 PM
I received mine today - absolutely beautiful! I'm leaving feedback from everyone and thank you all for making my first swap such a great one :)

04-19-2008, 10:59 AM
I received beautiful cards from Marla412 (Swallow), Dhawktx (Jewel), KrzyKitty (Tree), SallyAnn (Robe) and SweetOne (Bowl)

I've already given iTrader feedback for Mr. Pancake Machine, and am going to leave rep points for my other partners. I believe that's what we're supposed to do - rep for partners, itrader for hosts?

04-19-2008, 02:52 PM
I only know where 3 of my 5 cards ended up. :(
would love to hear from everyone in the swap. don't be bashful now, HeHe speak up LOL

04-19-2008, 04:27 PM
I'm missing some as well! I so wish people would take the time to leave rep or to at least acknowledge what they receive in the thread.

04-19-2008, 04:31 PM
In fact, I just checked and only 1 of 5 left rep points. Thank you Corrie04!

04-19-2008, 06:20 PM
I had 3 leave reps Thanks coffeelattee, LavenderLizard and ScamperSue!

04-19-2008, 06:24 PM
I,too like to know where my cards end up. Rep points are nice but, more importantly I like to see where my work has gone.

04-19-2008, 06:52 PM
maybe I will get one of your cards, they haven't arrived yet. Patience is a virtue ladies. wink wink

I thought some of you would be interested in this information. This swap was a direct 1 on 1 swap. In order to know where your cards went, you only have to see what cards you got. In other words, I received a fire rats fir card from Allen. That means he received my fire rat card. I received a dragon throat card from Corrie04; she received the dragon card from me, etc. Dhawktx gave me this info and Allen okayed my putting it on here.

04-21-2008, 09:24 PM
I still have not received my cards. I'll be sure to leave feedback and rep points when they arrive....hopefully soon...

Indeed Marla412 - I hope they do come soon. The cards went out on Friday the 11th, so it has been just a little over one week. Stormarela is in Canada (though Fingers in Singapore already received hers) which could be a bit of the delay. There are 4 people that I don't know about. Remember too that if you got a card from Kaypendragon she never made it over from the old site.

04-22-2008, 11:59 PM
Yipee!! My cards arrived today...sort of...and NOW I know why the delay. They arrived in one of those special plastic envies from the post office. The original envelope was enclosed - ripped to shreds by some evil post office machine. I only ended up with 4 out of the 5 cards. I don't know what happened to it, but the Buddah's stone begging bowl card did not arrive.

I did receive fabulous cards from: Pumpkincoach (Chinese Fire Rat in a Coat), KrzyKitty (Dragon 5 color jewel), egod/Gretchen (Tree with Pearls), and coffeelatte (Swallow's Delivery Mechanism). Thanks to you all for the great work and to pancake machine for hosting this awesome swap. I'm off to leave reps and iTrader ratings now.

04-23-2008, 01:25 AM
double yipee!! my cards arrived today too! Thanks Allen for a great swap, and thanks also to: SallyAnn, Codesmom, Cmarois, Jitterbug and Yatsu.... great cards everyone!

Seeing that kaypendragon never made it over to this site, I believe we are all done with the Bamboo Cutter's Daughter's 5 impossible tasks. Thanks again so much for everyone who participated and all the fabulous cards. Until next time.... Sayonara
