goatgoddess

and we are full :)
Just had to get in on the Moleskine exchange rage! I keep missing the signups so thought I would start my own party – anyone want to join? This will be an 8-player, open medium swap – keep in mind these are not chunky pages – but flat – no danglie bits.
************************************************** *********
this swap requires a huge amount of your time – there will be no withdrawls once you are accepted into the circle. Be very sure you are ready to take this on both in time and money – you will be looking at an 8 mth commitment.
you will need a Japanese Album Pocket Moleskine, you can find them at http://www.amazon.com/Moleskine-Japanese-Album-Pocket/dp/8883701046/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243706515&sr=8-1 and also at http://www.moleskineus.com/japanesebook.html
************************************************** ************
The rules that will keep us all happy <G>
You Promise that you will see this thru to the end – no flaking allowed!
You must be an actively trading member (defined as: positive iTrader across 2 swaps in the last 3 months)
You must have 3+ months in good standing (no neutrals or negative iTraders)
You have an iTrader rating of 25+
You are willing and able to do your very best work
you will mail on time – the 1st of each month.
You must ship eight journals around the world using MANDATORY tracking/Delivery Confirmation – no media mail
If something unforseen (major major stuff not just getting behind) you are willing to send the journal ahead and have it come back at the end when you are able to work on it - this will only be allowed on a trail by trail basis.
you are willing to share your mailing info, a phone number and list a contact person - this is to be sure no journals go MIA - info will only be shared with your fellow circle members - it's truely Heartbreaking when a journal is lost forever due to a member going MIA.
************************************************** ***********
purchase your moleys,- they are appox. 3.5”x5.5” – pick out a theme - fill out and decorate the first non-accordian pages with your name, address, and travel plan - You may decorate the cover or not - Then, the first 3 pages are all yours - This is a good time to establish your theme and color scheme – this will give your fellow artist a better sense of your theme .
you will create a four page layout in each journal you receive – Please do only your very best work
Optional – include a little something extra in the back pocket of the journal for the artist working on your journal – this can be a bit of pretty fiber, or art paper - atc– signurture card- small charm – bookmark – what ever catches your fancy - This is just for fun – some of members want to play, but no pressure on anyone to participate :)
************************************************** ***********
remember to mail on TIME and use first class mail with Mandatory tracking/delivery Confirmations - use a well padded bubble envie, sturdy box or a small Flat Rate Box - for $4.95 to anywhere in the US, at any weight up to 70 lbs., Priority Mail shipping takes just 2-3 days, in the USA.
After you mail post to the thread that you have mailed and post the tracking/delivery confirmations.
For eyecandy check out the gallerys here and there are several groups at flickr
(links to come)
so if you are up for all those rules and ready to party - pm me or post here in the thread - PLEASE read over the above carefully before signing up. Then get ready for the big art party moleskine blowout :jiggy:

I can't believe this one hasn't filled up yet with these being so popular!
I am still not sure on my theme. I like Dar's idea to start working on it and then decide. That is the way my mind works! I never stick to my plan.

I can give u my theme----now don't u all be shocked when I say: sheep, Anything Ireland, quirky houses or trees, iris flowers. Don't stress out. Stay calm. If these don't inspire you, than I won't be a bit worried if u come up with something else. I am flexible. Bulk doesn't bother me one bit---u saw my middle. Have fun!

Question from a Newbie---what is the best kind of glue to use for sticking pages in. Also, what about treating the front cover in order to paint on it? Do u coat it with Gesso? Remember, I am a pretty one-dimentional watercolorist!!
curbsidetreasure
07-05-2009, 07:50 PM
lilbad i like using gel medium to glue pages in. i usually buy the liquitex brand. pva glue by lineco is also good.
i think sanding the cover, then gessoing would work to do the cover :)
lilbad
07-05-2009, 09:23 PM
Thanks, appreciate the info. Is Michael's the place to get these?
KarenM
07-06-2009, 10:02 AM
lilbad, I also use Liquitex medium to glue and also sanded book cover slightly and used a little gesso to give me a base to paint on the cover....having said that ...I may wait to do my cover of this one until it is finished so that I can get it on the road faster. Will do the cover if I have time before I need to send it on it's way.
You can get the Liquitex at Michaels Pat Catan's if you have one of those around you. Art suppy stores also carry some of them.

Yes, Dar called me "Blue Buns," when she first saw me at AFA. She was apparently confused between me and Blueskysunburn and got the name all muddled. I told her that I thought the name was funny, but didn't realize that she made a card of me! I will have to check it out. Lilbad has been calling me "Electric Blue," and I like that, as well. Electric Blue Buns is even better! Spilling paint and sitting in it sounds just like something I would do.

Ok, got the gel medium---matte--today. Now how do u use it as a glue? Has anyone tried it on top of watercolor??
malicea10
07-09-2009, 10:41 PM
you may want to test a scrap and see what happens...
KarenM
07-09-2009, 10:53 PM
I have used it to glue by putting in all over the back in a thin coat...I use a popscicle stick to save my brushes ;) As for the front...not so sure about that! I haven't found much that will not move watercolor. I think something like Krylon acrylic might work better for that BUT PLEASE test it on something you don't mind messing up first.
I just use it on the back and also on the front IF I use watered down acrylic paint instead of water color. I love the Twinkling H2Os, but from the little experience I have had with them...they Really move when you try to color over or more in the same spot.
Anyone else have experience with sealing watercolor out there????
ArteDar
07-09-2009, 11:36 PM
Hi ladies! I've been playing and having fun! Here's a sneak~peek at what I have so far. I want to add more here and there and especially on the addy page. That's a pic of me when I was little...kisses!
you can't see all the glitter and shine but anyone who has Stewart Gill Galactica paints knows just how awesome they are....right JoyF?
Your Fairy Godmother was hand drawn and colored with Prism color pencils, some acrylic paints, old sheet music, rubber stamped and Galactica paints. LillyBelle...I do use the matt gel medium a lot. Karen is so right about saving the paint brushes...it's good stuff. I also use a brayer to smooth it out and remove the air bubbles...good to have a paper towel handy. Her dress is scrappin' paper and that's how it and the wings were glued on. Great suff for mixed media.
Free To Be Me is embossing powder. The flowers and swirls are a paste called Texture Magic...very dimensional...applied with a putty knife over a plastic stencil. you can add a dab of acrylic paints to tint/color but I used a gold powder mixed in.
The travel plan (blue pg) has everyones' name in the order in which it's to be mailed...I'll be getting some addies as needed.

JoyFlower
07-10-2009, 01:11 AM
Oh, Dar! That's so wonderful it just melts my heart into a glittery little puddle! WooooHooo! This is gonna be fun!!!!
I adore the Stewart Gill paints! I think they are worth the price...so smooth and shimmery! They actually go a long way, but I'm down to the bottom of a couple of jars so may need to put an order in soon.
...those fake credit cards that come in junkmail are perfect squeegee's for spreading gel medium or other glues too. ;) YES paste is another great dry flat paper glue...just for adhering items though, not sealing them...gel medium is definitely one of my favorite "go to" items...I usually keep both a mat and a self leveling gloss on hand.
Okay...I'm just rambling now...Love to all you dear ladies!
KarenM

Cheryl, is the self leveling Golden?
JoyFlower
07-10-2009, 08:46 AM
Cheryl, is the self leveling Golden?
Yes, Golden Self Leveling Clear Gel, dries shiny.
I also love the 3D Art Gel, by the maker of Diamond Glaze, but haven't been able to find it in my local store lately, so need to ask them to order it back in. You can spread it thin to seal, or put a thicker layer on top of things like dominos or charms, or to add dimension to a section of a card, like maybe the eyes so they have a rounded shiny feel.

Cheryl, I checked out the Stewart Gill site. There is an array of types of paint...which one are you using and have you tried any of the others? Great tip about the eyes...love your avatar BTW :)

I bought different types when I took the SuziBlu class so I could "sample" them... I have a pink and a green "byzantia" which are nice bright colors. A gold "metallica" that I LOVE, and a purple "pearlize" that is really smooth and blendable. All of them have an element of sparkle and a transparent nature so you can layer it for a more opaque effect, or use it over text, stamps, etc and still see a bit of the covered item. They're just YUMMY!
I also have the "galactica" glitter paint, but used it all up. But I need to experiment before ordering that again. In one of the threads someone said they get the same effect by mixing glitter with an acrylic glaze or gel medium..then you can just mix it as you need it.
:chatterbox: Can you tell I like the stuff? :chatterbox:

LOL>> Cheryl, I graduated with honors as an older student from the uiversity BUT I am a poster child for the unskilled in spelling, speaking etc. Love words, just don't know how to spell!!! and at times , don't know how to speak ? Must be that right brain/left brain thing..don't know and have learned not to care ;) How about Blatherskite? isn't that a lovely word? My granddad used to jokingly call us little Blatherskites. It was a term of endearment, I'm sure..he was my hero.

I thought since this is all about journal pages here I'd pop this pic in for Lil.
This is a 5x8 tip in for her journal from AFA09. She wants lamb/sheep and lil' houses so I'm hoping she likes Mary too. It's done much like the the moleskine pgs. except I added the bees wax to coat this one.
Now LillyBelle....I am so very excited to receive your water color paint pages....you just don't know how much I adore your art and have no ability to paint like you at all....it's true....we all look forward to different styles so don't you even try to be concerned for even a half of a second.

I think I have my theme! Elephants on parade. I am just really loving elephants lately and it would be cool to have them on a big parade that folds out the length of the book. I am thinking bright colors (including electric blue), whimsical elephants, or dark elephants, not necessarily realistic (but they could be). Throw in a few glitter goats, if you feel the spirit.:twitcy:
My son says I should have the theme of flying monkey dragons. They have to have dragon wings and fire breath and dragon claws. They have imposable (is that the right word?) thumbs, since they are monkeys. I told him that people might have trouble with that theme, so I am sticking with elephants.

I got a really nifty elephant stamp the other day that would work, and I really like the elephants that Mati Rose McDonough does and I think those would be simple for people that think it would be a stretch to do elephants:

I really like children's illustration type art like these.
I also really like the Ganesh type elephants, but I don't know how easy those would be to integrate in a parade.
I should get my Moleskine in the next few days and can't wait to get started now!

KEWL EB....that will be fun and I bet it will look awesome as a parade.
I have a little question....I hope no one throws rotten tomatoes at me though!
In the past, way back when ( 3 yrs. ago), GG knows, when we did the circle journals we would include a lil' gifty for each player like an atc or something small.(remember Debra?)
Maybe our beautiful hostess would like to elaborate on this more. I don't want to sound silly, but if I should put something extra in I wouldn't want anyone to feel obligated or funny that they didn't....ya know what I mean? I think it would be best if we were all on the same page and it would be totally up to each individual. I'm thinking I'd like to make a siggiy card or a nice atc...nothing too time consuming and put all seven in with my journal and you each take one when you get my book.
Any suggestions? Any questions? We can gang up on SwapMomma>>>LOL!!

Oh, I think that sounds like a fun idea! We could put them in the pocket at the back of the book! If we just go with the each one, take one approach it would sort of take care of itself. We could just consider them to be little RAKs, which removes all obligations. :)

I need to get the rules straight. I think I have it but need to confirm before I mess up right from the start! I know we are to do 4 pages on everyones journals. What I Think I read for our start is;
The first 2 pages are Travel log and Theme information.
The next (3?) pages are for us to start our theme?? making it 5 pages total? some of the other journals are 2 front pages + 4 in our theme= 6 to start a journal..
I don't care which , just need to make sure I do it correctly :)
I hope this makes sense!!

Sheesh....now I'm wondering if I did mine the right way! I put up pics of what I did and GG didn't say it was wrong....hope not.....I kept reading the instructions and then opened the fold out all the way and counted out the 4 pg. spread for everyone and that left the first three for me and that's what I went by.
What cha' think swapmum?
KarenM
07-19-2009, 02:17 PM
That makes sense Dar. I haven't gessoed them yet, because I was waiting. But the other one I am working on only had 7 people, so that makes a difference. I hadn't counted the pages, so glad you made it clear. Awww , what the heck, I'll do the 3 since it does make sense and if I am wrong..it's my book , right? :) Now, I must go gesso my pages . I need to get started !! And also need to think of RAK now.

More confusion here. For some reason, I thought with 8 people, we needed to fill 3 !/2 pages. Where did I get that??? I glued my watercolor paper in and not really happy with it. I don't want to screw up anyone's book.
ArteDar
07-19-2009, 07:28 PM
oh my lil....YOU make eight! Unfold it all the way...give seven peeps each four pages starting with the last one and count backwards....that will leave three pages of the accordion left for you. When you open the book there is a 2 page spread, put your own address and the list of peeps names (if you want to) in the rotation order in which your book is mailed around. You can put your name up there first since you are starting it's lil' journey. I'm certain mine is right. The back of the accordion pages will be blank....that is where you can put a signed name of your art and a lill' info if you choose to for each person's book....OR we can start it's journey again to fill up the back...ROFL....but probably not 'cause it is just the back, eh?
I'm pretty sure this will help everyone get it the same as everyone elses.

KarenM
07-19-2009, 11:04 PM
Okay, I went and counted my pages...there are 31 counting the first two nonfolding pages. That means if everyonelse (7) works 4 pages in your book which equals 28 pages, you have three left to work on. The first two stationary pages plus one more to do your travelog page, intro address etc, and one page for your theme. Is that what everyone else got when counting pages??????? Unless I hear otherwise, I guess that is what I will do. IF I get it back and want to work more...I figure I could do some work if there are unused back pages.

KarenM
07-20-2009, 12:58 PM
If you don't mind..?????? I counted and I think, if I do the first two inside pages and only the next page...that leaves just enough for the other 7 to do 4 pages in my journal. I would like for everyone to do 4 pages and I will do some on the backside when I get my journal back. ...IF This is okay with everyone. BUT!!!! I will do as everyone else does, if you would like. YAY....I did it right! TY GG.
Yes Lil....what they said...but your water color paper is heavier and cutting might work better so that when it's closed up it's not as bulky and giving it that lil' gap....of course you can still experiment with yours and see what you think. I would make your full page first and then cut.

Mal what is that link? I signed up on facebook but darn if I can figure out what to do with it now :err: can't seem to find anything there....but I've not spent much time there - can't get to it from work and don't have much time to play when I'm home - chores just never stop - where is that self cleaning house they promised us by year 2000?

Thank you guys!!! will check that out.
I'm getting the mailing info together today so will be sending that out shortly - hopefully today.
my sister is heading off to FL to live tomorrow so wrapping up things with the sale of her moble home to my son and saying our goodbyes - going to stop by tonight after work - she's lived next door for 20 years - will seem strange not to have her there.

I am trying to get mine done too . Almost there...drying time in between coats etc.
I am also panicing , don't have the fun little extras done to go along...what is everyone doing about that? AND is it one for everyone who works on your book..i.e. 7 (somethings) to be sent with your original for everyone after to take a (you fill in the blank for me ...please :) )
goatgoddess
07-28-2009, 03:09 PM
no worries on that - you can do it if you want but sure don't need to do it
it is one for each should you want to do it but it could be a sig. card (prints) a little pcs of fiber, a bit of cool paper, or a atc (again could be a print)
so it can be very simple or a bit more fancy like I'm sure Dar is doing <G>
I haven't even thought about that part yet :swoon: but I do have a idea I should be able to do fairly easily.

If I mess up I just consider it a layer of the background and work over it and the funny thing is that the more you cover it up with a thin layer of gesso or whatever, the more depth it adds to the finished spread.
I am so messy when I work that I have found it a lifesaver to cover up the rest of the book with waxed paper so I don't mess up anything but my own pages!
I plan on mailing mine tomorrow, finally. I can't seem to actually finish anything lately.
