Our 3rd Zentangle-a-thon . . . July 10, 11 & 12 2009

Welcome to our 3rd ATC Zentangle-a-thon . . . . It is open to everyone . . . ., so just jump in. No signing up or anything like that. Just play.

We start 5 p.m. Friday 10th of July 2009 (where ever you are on this planet when it is 5 p.m. Friday)

We stop 11:59 p.m. Sunday 12th of July 2009 (where ever you are in the world when it is 11:59 p.m. Sunday)

This time there will be a couple of OPTIONAL challenges, just for a little bit of change.

Saturday: Inchy Zentangles (groupings of 6) and/or Twinchy Zentangles (groupings of 4).

Sunday: watercolored background paper. No rules about the watercolor, but hopefully your Zentangle will be visible:jiggy:.

Zentangles are basically repetitive line drawn shapes/designs/abstracts, created in a concise flowing manner. It is drawing done by creating a connection between your hand holding the pen and your eye looking at the paper. Try to leave your brain/thoughts out of it as much as possible. Afterall the word is ZEN. Just allow it to happen, do not force it. It is a lot of fun!! You are free to do your version of a Zentangle . . . . just create and have fun, do good work, and create at a peaceful pace. Here is a website www.zentangle.com.

No collage, no stamping, no embellishments.

Please post pics in this thread as you do your Zentangles. It is nice to see others zentangles so we can all enjoy the wonderful art . . . so we can be inspired by your work . . . and ultimately so we can all trade with each other.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone does. And do not be shy, ask each other to trade. That is the whole point. Trade, TRADE, T R A D E. Well maybe not the whole point, but.....

Sounds interesting. So, am I right that basically don't start drawing until Friday, but it must ne uploaded before Sunday evening? (never done one of these...)

CattyCat
07-09-2009, 11:28 AM
Gina-B and other first timers: Everyone tends to agree it is ok to prep the backings ahead of time. But, yes, drawing Zentangles begins on Friday evening at 5pm your time. You stop drawing at one minute before midnight Sunday your time. Many upload on Monday or after midnight. But you retire your pens at midnight. Some people only have time on one day, some are at it all weekend. Some people do 3 cards all weekend, some do a whole lot more. It is what it is and you do what you want to do. No rules about that part.

Excuse me I'm new to inchies and twinchies. What does "Group with me" mean?

POINT TO ALL PLAYERS: I tried doing a zentangle inchy last night. Would highly recommend gridding them off on a piece of paper but not cutting them to inch size until after you do all 6 of the set. It is way hard to do small lines like this while holding just one squar inch in your hand. :jiggy::twitcy::rolleyes::D

It is hard being the host of the ZAT and having to watch everyone get up and going, posting away, while I sit here counting down. California is one of the last places to start. Hawaii is the only later one I am thinking.

Bright-spark, I made my set of Inchies while I was supposed to be working on a swap I have to post on Monday - the Zentangles were flowing much more freely than the cards i was supposed to be doing. (I feel as guilty as though I have been caught not doing my homework :embarrassed:)
Gina-B, your cards are amazing! Bright-sparks so are yours - well worth the diversion

Hi everyone, I wanted to play with you all but I am out of town. I always bring my art stuff with me and happened to have an ATC size card with watercolor on it (not sure what I was going to do with it) but I did do a zentangle on it.

So I at least played a bit. I hope next time I am in town. Lots of great zentangles here.

shall I post 15 messages here or just post in the main gallery and eventually, maybe by next zentangleathon I'll have 15 posts in?

Well, I started last night on my first Zen, but just as I was sitting down with my glass of wine, relaxing into the Zen mood and putting pen to paper, some unexpected friends stopped by. They invited themselves for dinner and a movie. Normally I love it when people come over, but not when my house is a disaster, and not when I am Zentangling! I am so hooked on these things!

Anyway, I finished my first ATC this morning instead... and I have posted it below. I have also done three inchies, but had to toss the other three because they were awful! Doing Zens so small is tough... I want to put way more on the tiny piece of paper than can possible fit. LOL!

There are some stunning zens being posted! I think I'll have to get some fine coloured pens to try some with coloured lines!

Its interesting that some patterns have names - I think of them more along the lines of embroidery stitches but I think I may just be odd...

Here's my watercoloured background ones - though I used watercolour pencils/crayons to create them

I'm loving the zens you all are doing! Cat in the sky is so lovely and loose and starry, the blue lightning is great design, I love the hippy daze set and the idea of marks as embroidery stitches has me going tomorrow to dig out an old stitch book to see where tha can lead.

And I think this makes 15 so now I'll try putting in yesterday's and start on todays! whoopee!!! I love zens and coloring so put together is just right for me.

They are all fantastic, Jensamouse!! I think my favourite is the 1st card in your 2nd half - it looks like octopus legs to me. I still find it hard not to feel that I HAVE to fill the entire card - so many other people do great cards leaving various borders.
Must be inspired. . . must be inspired. . . I CAN do it (I can try?!?):nah:

I almost ALWAYS fill all my cards all the way so I have been challenging myself to leave white space. It happened after someone left a post with cards with white space complaining about their childhood art teacher for never letting them leave white on the paper... I AM that art teacher. *sigh*

It's been a busy weekend up till now, but just had a chance to browse through this thread. What amazing work you have all been doing!! I'm hoping to come up with a couple of my own to share today...they really are so relazing and fun to create!

Thanks to everyone for the beautiful and inspiring cards you have posted here!

I have used the Zentangle-a-thon as inspiration for the cards I will be sending to the 'Black, white and RED' swap - can I post them here?

You created them during the a-thon, so I'd say yes. And we want to see them! Just note that they are already traded. :D

I am still waiting for my water color backgrounds to dry so I can get started today. I should have done it last night, but we had company again (same people as Friday and yesterday) and afterward I was too tired to do much of anything but go to bed (several beers were involved! LOL!). This weekend is flying by. I will try to catch up with you all as soon as the backgrounds dry. Right now, however, it is Boogie Boarding time!

Hi DP,
sometimes I use my hair dryer on watercolors, then flatten a bit with a book if the edges curled during drying.

Nice ones Catty. I sent you a trade message.

What does Group With Me mean? I'm new to inchies and twinchies. Don't know what that lingo means.... CattyCat I do inchies and twinchies and I don't know for sure what she meant... but my guess is she meant to say "trade a group with me" since the rules said 6-inchies and 4-twinchies.

LOL I just realized with ingmarpema's comment about the scanner that I never put the watercolor background cards I did in the thread. The pink in the Sun one is a hotpink the scanner doesn't show it.

I had this Zentangle-a-thon clearly marked on my calendar and then my husband decided NOT to work 7 days a week and want to do things with me - his timing stinks!! LOL
I had some watercolour backgrounds drying when he decided that he would take me out to dinner and, while I was completing the zentangles, started my computer on its monthly tune-up. I did put my pens down at midnight but was unable to load the results until now.http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/3190/large/1_atc138.jpg orange herringbone (another sewing stitch)
http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/3190/large/1_atc139.jpg bamboo
does 'Bamboo' count as a full Zentangle even though it is only 1 pattern? I thought that it worked well

HHC
07-12-2009, 10:38 PM
Cool cards, Donncr. Bamboo counts. A zen is whatever lines call you to draw them. They can all be different or the same. Whatever flows...

Here is another I've done. It's using a water color and plastic wrap technique background. Zen called me to just draw soothing lines... ;) The color is not true... my scanner has issues with green.

And for the record, I hvae a couple that are totally wacked. Sometimes the lines don't flow as nicely as others... LOL. I'll see if I can use mrubyjean's trick of finding inchies in them. :D

One last one for me today ~ it is on a textured, lightly watercolored background, so the pen lines bled a little, but I like the effect. I call it "Fireworks".

I am finally finished with my last Zens for this ZAT. I hope you all will forgive me for posting them late... I got them into my gallery just as the buzzer rang. Now I am going to post the here. Beautiful zens everyone - wish I'd done more for trading!

I've enjoyed this - the first 'a-thon' I've taken part in. It has been really interesting to see what everybody is producing.

I did take the opportunity to work on my set for the 'Black & white & red zentangles' swap, using red ink as a background and going overboard and doing a fifth!

Here's the extra - the ones for the swap are in my gallery.

CattyCat
07-13-2009, 01:23 PM
Well I ended up doing 9 Zentangles (ATC size), 12 inchies, and 4 twinchies. If you'd like to trade, what is left is in my gallery in the Available ATCs Galley and then also in the Available Mail Art Gallery. It has been fun hosting the ZAT. It was a nice mellow one, but I am still exhausted. The "a-thons" really sap my energy but in an OH SO FUN FUN way.

Thanks everyone for playing!
;) Beautiful Zentangles were made here, for sure. ;)

Oh yea, only give iTraders to those you trade with, not to me though.
Thems the rules.

I'm embarassed to say that I never got even one zen done for the zen-a-thon. It was just a crazy weekend and I totally zoned out on art. Did none. Everyone did such spectacular work. I'm sorry that I can't trade for any of it. Maybe next time.

Anyone that wants to trade - whether you participated or not, let me know! I still have 12 left. Last ZAT I ended up with a whole slew of remainders that I ended up trading with my elementary students. In fact, I still have one of those left in my gallery too. The aforementioned gallery is up to date on availability as of right now too.
