View Full Version : Michigan Trading Group (Ann Arbor/Detroit/Toledo, OH area)

07-13-2009, 09:01 AM
Hi everyone,

Since the Michigan Social group isn't checked very often, I wanted to start a thread here to organize some live events!

We've had some discussion about Ann Arbor, although I don't think we have a location picked out there (so it might be meeting/shopping, but not creating).

I am also happy to host if it will be under 10 people or so. I will be in Rochester Hills, MI, very close to Oakland University. if we come to my house, we can create messes and do art demonstrations and such. I can teach us papermaking! :) :) :)

We can also alternate the location of our meetings so that the same people aren't always driving each time.

Anyways, I hope to see who is interested and work out a date or regular series of dates for those of us who are close enough or willing to drive.

Interested parties:
jrgoddess (?)

Date to meet in Ann Arbor:

August 15th - Good for Blueeclipse
August 22nd - bad for Adriayna
August 29th - Good for Adriayna, Vholdwic, Lini
Labor Day, September 5th or around - Good for Arteeztmom, Adriayna,

07-13-2009, 09:11 AM
I'm in, both locations are about the same distance for me so either one will work. :)

07-13-2009, 09:18 AM
I'm in - I live between Lansing and Jackson, so prefer Ann Arbor. Have been to Plymouth, but don't know my way much further east than that.

07-13-2009, 10:09 AM
Rochester hills is maybe 10 minutes to the east of Plymouth (depending on traffic).

07-13-2009, 11:23 AM
I'm in Riverview (near Wyandotte). Is that really far away?

07-13-2009, 01:23 PM
jrgoddess, according to google maps you're about an hour from Rochester Hills, and about 45 mins to an hour away from Ann Arbor.

07-13-2009, 01:55 PM
That's not too bad at all! are you interested, Jr.Goddess? We'd love to have you!

07-13-2009, 02:18 PM
I'm interested, but also would like some in the Lansing area too! I have always wanted to learn how to make paper.

07-13-2009, 02:18 PM
Either Rochester or Ann Arbor works for me. About 1 hour and 45 minutes from each.

07-13-2009, 07:00 PM
Ok u guys, no fun without me!!

07-14-2009, 07:30 AM
I'm a bit north of you all in Charlevoix, along Lake Michigan. We are about an hour's drive south of the bridge. A meeting would be a little challenge for me to make but I'm willing to give it a try. I have been dying to go to a store in Ann Arbor called "Hollander's" for a long time. They sell papers, bookbinding supplies and have workshops in various paper arts. I would have to see if the meeting time/location fit into my work/mom life schedule. We might be in Royal Oak for Labor Day weekend.:D

07-14-2009, 08:10 AM
Bralina, Farmington is aproximately 20 mins from where i'm at, so... you're probably only about 35-40 mins to each location

Arteeztmom - Hollanders is such an awesome store. When I was into bookbinding, that store was priceless for all the supplies I needed... and the owners were so helpful when I was getting started. Definitely a place to check out if we meet in Ann Arbor.

07-14-2009, 09:10 AM
Do we want to schedule a "shopping meeting" for Ann Arbor then, maybe in August? We could meet for lunch, go to the store you mention - Hollander's. There is also an Ann Arbor Scrap store: http://www.scrapbox.org/home.html. We would have to go on a Saturday though, as they are only open then on the weekends and only from 10am - 2PM.

I don't think my house will unpacked and ready to host artsy stuff for a while anyways.

What weekends work best for everyone? I would prefer towards the middle or end of the month.

07-14-2009, 09:15 AM
Yep! Middle to end of August sounds good to me!

07-14-2009, 09:15 AM
Here is a google map of the two artsy locations. Other than Michaels, there doesn't seem to be anywhere else good to shop. But I think these two will be REALLY good!

07-14-2009, 09:19 AM
Ok, here are three possibilities for dates to meet in ann arbor for trading, food, and art shopping:

Saturday, August 15th
Saturday, August 22nd
Saturday, August 29th.

I think I am going to have to go to my class reunion the weekend of the 22nd, so the other two would be best for me.

Our meeting might go like this:

Meet at Scrap at 11AM (since they have very limited hours on the weekend). Shop scrap for an hour or so! Go to lunch and enjoy some ATC trading! (Maybe we can request a private room with a reservation somewhere nice. Any suggestions?) More shopping at Hollander's once we are done (they are open till 6 on Saturday). And while we are there, we can plan our second meet up! :)

07-14-2009, 10:12 AM
this all sounds great!!! the 15th would be best for me out of the three

07-16-2009, 07:56 PM
The 29th would work best for me, too!

07-16-2009, 10:38 PM
I would like Aug. 29 too. My class reunion is August 22 as well Dana!

darn it.... sure would love to see ya all... but the over 4 hour drive is just not gonna cut it for me... but then... maybe I will think about doing a sleep-over.... there sure are enough motels to pick from...
and the SCRAP-BOX... good grief... I went there over 20 years ago... different building
and much smaller... but then it cost a dollor to fill a bag... and I still have plastic tubs full of stuff I have gotten there...
also there is a paper store... and I have sent for skelton leaves... forgot the name
will look for it and post again...

07-17-2009, 12:29 AM
and hello Dana... and welcome to Michigan.... a wonderful state... a whole lot to see...

07-17-2009, 08:20 AM
Once the week-end is picked, I'll work around it with my cabin week-ends.

07-17-2009, 09:29 PM
Hey, I've been so busy, I've forgotten to check in here! A weekend with you guys sounds so fun! I think the best I could do is Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5. Like Ducky, I have a bit of a drive plus I am cleaning this summer and have a rental I do on Saturdays. My kids are busy also and I don't know if I could get away alone. We often go to Royal Oak on Labor Day weekend. Is that weekend out of the question?

07-18-2009, 09:01 AM
I think we need to plan a time in the "middle of the mitten" for some of you northern artists. Houghton Lake, Gaylord, Graying?????

07-18-2009, 04:19 PM
What do people think about September 5th or that weekend? Since Tanya is driving in from so far away, maybe we can make it work for her. Thoughts?

07-18-2009, 04:39 PM
I will be in the U.P. at my cabin over Labor Day week-end. Several of my kids and grands are coming up north too. But, that's ok, if most of them can come, I'll catch it another time.

07-18-2009, 06:02 PM
Sept 5 works for me :)

07-19-2009, 09:00 AM
I have a wedding Labor Day weekend.

07-22-2009, 07:01 AM
I'm in Webberville and if I were able to attend Ann Arbor would be my choice. At this time there isn't much art coming from me though as I'm in the middle of adding a room to our house and it has consumed me. But please keep me informed. Would really like to meeet the Michigan folks. Thanks.

07-22-2009, 09:14 AM
If we can find a good place to meet, that will have us once each month or every-other month, that would be fun! Different members will probably be able to come different times.

07-22-2009, 09:15 AM
We met one time at the city hall in Charlotte (half-way between Lansing and Battle Creek), however only four members came. We had a good time anyway and had tons of sub sandwiches left over.

07-22-2009, 09:16 AM
Good idea, Mary Jean!!!

07-22-2009, 09:52 AM
Ok, so it looks like Labor day isnt' good for many people.

Tanya, you and I and whoever else can still get together Labor Day weekend! My new art room will be finished long before you get here :). We can hang out and create art!

SO then are we shooting for Ann Arbor the weekend of the 29th? That seems to be the best for the most people...

07-22-2009, 10:39 AM
I'd love to meet on the 29th in Ann Arbor!

07-22-2009, 02:09 PM
Looks like Saturday, Aug. 29 works for me. I'll miss my son's pig roast but I have been to that every year and meeting all my computer friends sounds like a winner.

07-22-2009, 03:21 PM
aww, I won't be able to make the 29th, a family members bday is that day... but if you decide to have a labor day get together, i'll make it to that one or another in the future :)

07-22-2009, 04:23 PM
We all lead such a busy life, don't we?

07-23-2009, 07:56 AM
I'll put Labor Day in pencil on my calendar Dana! And if BlueEclipse could join us that would be fun! You never know, it might work out for more to join us by then. I'd love to see your "art room" where all that magic happens! Maybe some will rub off on me!!!!:jiggy:

07-23-2009, 05:43 PM
August 29 I'm in an art fair in Swartz Creek. So everyone have fun. I'll get there one day.

07-23-2009, 05:47 PM
Good for you Douglas, being in a place where you might earn some $$ with your art!! I hope I can be there some day too!! That'll have to wait until my baby birds fly out of the nest...not that I'm rushing it!

07-23-2009, 06:05 PM
Ok, so then we are meeting in Ann Arbor on the 29th (details forthcoming).

I'll host an art party for Arteeztmom, Blueeclipse, and anyone else who wants to come on Labor Day weekend.

Tanya and Matt, if it is nice outside would you like to learn how to make handmade paper?

07-23-2009, 06:38 PM
Ohhhhh! I've always wanted to learn how to make hand-made paper, but Labor Day week-end is when most of my kids come up to the cabin. Shucks!

07-23-2009, 06:53 PM
Penny, don't worry! I can teach it anytime. I have all the materials here with me in Michigan. You can come over some weekend or I could come there and we could make it :)

07-23-2009, 08:04 PM
Dana, that would be awesome!!! I've always wanted to try to make paper, especially for making homemade journals. I used to make journals with the coptic stitch binding, so that'd be great! :jiggy:

07-23-2009, 09:27 PM
Sweet, let's see if Tanya is up to it! If not, you can come over some other time.

07-23-2009, 11:22 PM
I FINALLY GET TO MAKE PAPER!!???:jiggy: I've seen it done in books and have wanted to do it for YEARS! I know it's not rocket science but I have never gotten around to getting the stuff I need. Do you use screens? Oh, I'm excited now!! What if my daughter wants to join us? She turns 12 on Monday and loves art too! You'll have to send me directions to your place, if that's where we will meet. I will send you a message with details of where I'll be!

07-24-2009, 01:04 PM
I have everything we need, and yes, your daughter is welcome to join us. I used to teach papermaking classes! :) Maybe I will again in my new location, who knows! :)

07-24-2009, 01:06 PM
Vholdwic, Lini - is there anyway you two could make August 15th in Ann Arbor instead of the 29th? I think its just the three of us so far. Or is Pennyquilter in too? If Blueeclipse can come the 15th but not the 29th and everyone else can make the 15th, then maybe we can do that instead. I guess I want to see if we can get the most people to come. or the 22nd...I'm not going to my class reunion, I decided.

So maybe the best thing to do is to post the dates that are BEST for you and dates you are ABLE TO COME.

07-24-2009, 01:57 PM
I'll still be at my cabin the week-end of August 15. Us Michigan people are such busy people! Shucks!

07-25-2009, 12:09 AM
I'll be at a conference in Lansing all day the 15th. Sorry.

07-25-2009, 09:35 AM
Ok, then we'll keep it the 29th!

08-17-2009, 07:37 AM
Hi Adriayna,

Are we any closer to deciding where we are meeting/what we are doing in Ann Arbor on the 29th?

Can't wait to meet y'all!

08-17-2009, 08:25 AM
LOL, nope! I have no idea what is in the area! Do you??? :)

I know going to the Hollanders and the Scrap store is on the agenda. Let me look for a good place to eat.

08-17-2009, 09:39 PM
Oh my you all, it's killing me to know you're going to Hollander's!! I just can't swing two weekends in a row!!

08-18-2009, 11:24 AM
Actually there is a lovely eatery right next to Hollander's called Monahan's and I am sure there are other eateries within walking distance.

Is the scrapbook store near Hollander's?

08-18-2009, 12:40 PM
Scrap isn't a scrapbooking store, lol! Its a bulk art supply store that others would consider "scraps".

Monahan's sounds great!

08-19-2009, 06:44 AM
Sounds even better!!!!

08-19-2009, 09:46 AM
Lini and I have both been invited to a special lunch on Aug. 29 for a dear friend who is turning 89 years old, so we can't come this time. The rest of you have fun!

08-19-2009, 08:52 PM
Oh no! Who can make it then? Me, Blueeclipse, and Vholdwick? ANyone else?

08-19-2009, 08:59 PM
Unfortunately, I can't make it on the 29th... it's my mom's bday

08-19-2009, 09:06 PM
Oh no!!!!! Maybe we'll have to try for September instead.

Ok, focus everyone! What weekends are good in September? I can't do the weekend of the 17-19th.

08-19-2009, 09:34 PM
Dana, u poor thing--shame on u Michigan folk! Oregon is going to have to whip u again in Football!!!

08-20-2009, 08:45 AM
Well, regardless of the status of the 29th, we are doing papermaking at my place in Rochester Hills on Labor Day weekend. And then, once a month after that, I'm having art nights where we learn new techniques, trade, and share. :P

08-21-2009, 09:11 AM
What a great idea Dana! I can't wait to make paper with you!! :jiggy:

09-25-2009, 11:01 AM
We had a blast making paper! It looks like everyone is busy with other things at the moment!! Hopefully we can arrange another meeting with more folks down the road. My life is pretty full but maybe a miracle will line up the planets just right and I can meet some more great Michigan artists face to face!

10-14-2009, 10:05 PM
Hello , haven't been here in a while, just checked messages. I live in Canton, MI, near IKEA. Did anyone get together? I would be interested in live meeting and trading. I would also be willing to have it in my home if not too many, 5-6. I have a large tabel in dinning room we could work at, trade, play, etc. I could make coffee, serve cookies (or what ever). I know it's difficult to agree on a date, everyone's so busy, maybe go for even a few people that are available, maybe others would clean their schedule. Sincerely, Maryannf

10-15-2009, 09:13 AM
Hey, if you're near IKEA, I'd LOVE to kill two birds with one drive! That sounds awful, you know what I mean. I'm game to try make a date. Even if it's only a couple people, it's still nice to meet each other. Coffee and cookies? Home baked?? Art time, friends, coffee and homemade cookies? That sounds like my kind of afternoon!!! I'll keep my ear to the ground!:)

10-15-2009, 11:00 AM
Keep me in the loop, in case I am available.
