Swap Due Date - April 30
Signup/withdraw date - March 31
Number of Cards - 9 for 9
Number of participants -Maximum of 10

[B]Mermaids have always fascinated me.
Let's make some beautiful chunky book pages featuring these creatures!
I will allow international players provided you are willing to send enough U S postage stamps to cover your returns. See the chart below for estimated International return costs. An IrC is acceptable too, but I can't refund unused money from these as the post office just sticks them on and doesn't give change.

You must have an itrader of +10 to join this swap.

These will be due on April 30. You can sign up until March 31, or until the slots are full. You can withdraw until March 31. If you choose to withdraw after that date you will receive a neutral i-trader rating due to the fact everyone is counting on you and making enough pages for everyone.

In a traditional chunky book, each player makes a page for each other player. I'm going to allow up to 10 players per group in this chunky book swap, so then if you want a page from every player, you'll be making 9 pages (10 if you want one for yourself) for each group you sign up for.

This swap is for a 4x4" chunky book. This is an OPEN MEDIA chunky book - so work in what you are comfortable with. No plain graphite please, I prefer to see color. If you desire a black and white scheme please use collage or paints. I ask that everyone do their ***best work***--please create pages that you would like others to receive and that you are proud of. Please make sure all stamped images are well used and not just stamped on paper, with nothing else done to them or around them. Any stickers used should be altered in some way. ALL pages must be original artwork. NO photocopies, and I prefer no digitals. You may make every page the same or every page different, but they must be *real* pages and not something you took to the store and copied off.

Please create your pages double sided so that when they are in a book, they look nice on both front and back. Also, please use a thicker paper or light board for the pages themselves--I want them to be at least somewhat sturdy. The minimum would be 140lb watercolor paper.

1. Illustration board or Mat board is the perfect weight for these. You can buy it at most craft stores for anywhere from $3.99-$6.99. I just bought some last night and was able to cut 35 4 inch squares from a piece of Illustration board. Use an Xacto knife and a yardstick. If you have a clear, grided quilt ruler with measurements, these work AWESOME for helping to cut paper! I have on that is about 22 inches long and I LOVE it! If you have already made your pages and they are not quite this heavy, that is ok too.

2. Please incorporate you user info on the back side, in some kind of artistic manner, like in a spiral, collaged on and brushed with ink, etc. Basically, I want it to blend in and not stand out in glaring black and white.

3. As to the pages, you can make them all the same or each one different, it is up to you. I just ask that you don't make one page, photocopy it and send in photocopied pages. These should be all original.

Remember these pages are going to be in a BOOK or hung. Please do not place chunky embellishments at the top or left edges, as this is where people choose to bind them or use them for hanging. Some people will be hanging these so the 4 corners should be the same so the design doesn't get ruined. "Chunky means fibers, wire, beads, tags and things dangling off of and around the pages. The pages themselves can have a little bit of embellishment, but should not be so think they aren't able to fit comfortably in a book.

Please make sure your pages are not sticky...some might use decoupage to seal it...but sometimes this makes them tacky. Allow plenty of dryin time. Gel medium works great to seal pages! I do not hold swaps up for late people, so if you know you can't get these done in time, please withdraw by the specified date above.

Assembly: You will be binding your returns together to make the book. You will receive 1 page from each of the people signed up. I suggest, but you don't have to, that you make an extra page to keep for yourself and bind it in with your returns. If you need book binding tips, search the internet, as there are lots of good instructions and styles out there. If you need those rings that slide open (book Binder rings), check the craft stores in the embroidery thread section, as they sell them there.

Postage: When you take your chunky book pages to have them mailed, BEFORE sealing the envelope, have it weighed and then add the same amount of postage it will cost you to send to your SASE return envelope. Also, please include 2 loose stamps, in case your returns are heavier than what you sent. I will return any unused stamps to you. Please let me know if you need further clarification on the postage! Please DO NOT send cash, checks, paypal, etc. Stamps make it safer and easier for everyone. Internationals can send an IRC, but please make sure it is properly validated. I cannot refund any unused postage cost for IRCs.

Canada - $3.00 airmail
Australia - 10.00 airmail
New Zealand: $8.00
Europe: $6.30 - $7.20

Due: The chunky book pages will be due IN MY HANDs by April 30th, 2008. This gives you plenty of time to get pages done.

How's everyone coming along? I have finished my 10 sketches! WOOT WOOT! Now, I just need to refine the drawings, do the graphite transfers, ink them and then do my watercolor washes. I may try acrylic too, but am not sure yet. Is everyone else having as much fun as I am?

ElectaBlue
02-24-2008, 01:46 AM
I actually have mine finished, but I want to mail the Marie Antoinette, Alice and Mermaids together so it will be a while. I do have to say the mermaids were tons of fun!

02-24-2008, 10:04 AM
Wow~ hangs head shamefully~ Here I am the hostess and not one of my three chunky swaps are completely finished! Oh well... working on it. Great job ElectaBlue! I know I will love them all!

ElectaBlue
02-24-2008, 11:10 AM
I don't think you should be ashamed! It sounds like you have started all of them and over the last couple of weeks it was hard to concentrate on art. The Marie Antoinette's are proceeding very slowly and I haven't even started the Alice pages.

Bigkay, I like your mermaid page you posted in the gallery, but I think she may be too rude for this swap..

I uploaded some pictures of my mermaids. I had posted some on the other site, but the ones here are some that I didn't post before. The 4th picture in the set is an example of what I did on the back. I painted the backs with different color acrylics and used punchinella so they had a distressed look and then used a rubber stamp to emoss a mermaid on the back: http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=3452

BigKay
03-03-2008, 12:14 PM
Yeah I know she is - that one is for me!

The other sketches that I drew are much nicer, gentler, more polite mermaids. I wanted to do one page start to finish to plan out how I was going to chunk up my work. I was happy with the result so they will all be similar to her, sans the tattoos, attitude, and finger. :)

BigKay
03-03-2008, 12:15 PM
Oops I posted twice. :) Good times.

pumpkincoach
03-03-2008, 12:28 PM
BigKay~ I have to say you do some awesome altered art! I like the chunky page...sans finger...but you have already had enough complaining about that one! I love what you did for scales! SOOO cool! The shell is a beautiful touch too.
Electablue~ Yours are gorgeous too! I just love their giant eyes! I always like your color combos too!
I have begun the watercolor wash on mine and will be working on them some more this week. I am going to have fun with these!

ElectaBlue
03-03-2008, 01:03 PM
I wouldn't say I was complaining about the finger, per say, more just that it might offend some people! I know that I wouldn't really want my son and all his friends looking at my mermaid book with the inappropriate gesture. I have to say that I do like the tattoos and the attitude, so I hope they don't lose that entirely.

BigKay
03-03-2008, 01:12 PM
I never intended to send the finger to go to the swap; I wrote that in my description when I uploaded it to the gallery, silly.

pumpkincoach
03-03-2008, 01:37 PM
Lisa~ I know you weren't complaining... I didn't mean it to sound like that. I just didn't want BigKay to think I was pickin' on her. ;) BigKay, I know you wrote you never intended to send it. We can't wait to see what you do come up with. The tatoos are cool and so is the attitude. I just want everyone to be happy and have fun. Ok?:D

ElectaBlue
03-03-2008, 02:14 PM
BIgkay, I KNEW that you didn't intend to put it in the swap! I actually think it is really funny and I wasn't offended or anything.

It is so easy to read people the wrong way on here. I wasn't upset or offended or anything, and I was actually trying to pay you a compliment! I really LIKE how you she has that attitude and the tattoos and all! I personally like cards that are a little bit "out there" and catch your attention and make you laugh or think or whatever.

Anyway, I apologize if anyone thinks I was complaining or upset, or anything negative at all, because that was not my intention.

pumpkincoach
03-03-2008, 02:50 PM
Lisa~ I don't think anyone actually thought you were complaining. I was addressing some comments made in BigKay's gallery. It IS reallly hard to read people here! I hope you weren't offened by ME and if you were, I am sorry. No offense was meant to anyone.:D

BigKay
03-03-2008, 02:59 PM
Whew! Thank goodness that's all cleared up :)
If you knew me, you'd know that I'd never offend any of you on purpose (not saying that I did!) ... I just thought the finger was freakin hysterical! I still do. I can't get over it. I'm laughing right now.

Man, it's hard not to be misunderstood when the people you're communicating with can't see you cracking yourself up.

Let's never speak of it again :)

okay, so not only did i finally start these . . . made all my blanks, added blue papers and some vintage text to the 4x4s, but i also finished one page.

i started thinking about bare boobies . . . and i drew a mermaid with bodacious ta-tas. i promise to produce at least a few pages with mermaids who are a little more demure. :cute:

OMG, you drew her? I love her! (I think it's the ta-tas)
Awesome page, AF - the ribbon "seaweed" @ the bottom is sweet.
All of my mermaids are 60% finished - I will upload a few more soon.
Love this swap. xo

03-11-2008, 11:40 AM
Awesome Amyfaerie! I even like the tatas! I have been working hard on mine. They are watercolor. They are probably about 1/4 of the way done, but will go pretty fast once I finish the watercolor part. I am loving them so far! I can't wait to see EVERYONE's pages. This is going to be such a great swap!

Fantastic page! The mermaid is great and the chunkiness at the bottom is very creative and different (which I like, of course). I am not saying anything about the ta-tas!

amyfaerie- I love the ribbons at the bottom, and the mermaid herself is so cute.
PumpkinCoach - Great drawings, I like your choice of ribbons too.

What is everyone's feelings on mermaid boobies? I starting to sketch mine out, then wasn't sure if I needed to have them covered or left bare.

03-12-2008, 03:09 AM
Good question Luvloz! I personally would like my mermaids to be covered. Why doesn't everyone post here and I will add it to the sign up list. That way I will know who definately does not want naked mermaids.

pumpkincoach
03-12-2008, 02:38 PM

Linda, those are very impressive! They would be fantastic if you just painted the fronts, but the backs being painted, too, just makes them over the top.

Amyfaerie, I didn't have time to comment on yours the other day when I checked them out and yours are just too amazing for words, as well.

This book is going to be so impressive and so colorful!

Thank you, I was a little nervous about my chunky stuff .... but I have discussed it with our hostess and I'll be adding a little something extra each person can add to their books when they bind them, I thought that was better than having them on my pages. Shhh pumpkincoach let them think about it, don't tell .... :cute:

Linda4atc

It seems the need for one of a kind originals is a big thing to some. There is a thread in the forum saying we should mark each card as to it being an "original" or a "series". Personaly if I like something I do not care if there are hundreds out there unless I have spent big money for an "original". And it's hard to know if I may want to reuse an image later on ... making an original into part of a series of one of kind cards. . . . sigh

To make these I did my sketch on scratch paper. I used a light table to help me get the backs drawn, then used that blue transfer paper to place them on the pages. Since I still have the sketches anyone mind if I use them for rolos or ATC's? Or is it silly to even ask?

pumpkincoach
03-20-2008, 07:54 PM
Linda~ I don't mind! Originals are nice, but I believe most people just don't want "cookie cutter" cards sent in for swaps. They want one unique card for each of the cards required, that way someone can't just slap a sticker in the middle of a card or repeat the same digital image over and over and then send it in. If you have done the artwork, then it IS an original! Most professional artists repeat themes/styles, even the same character over and over again. When I do that, I just change it up a little to make it more unique. When I say original, I mean I do not want photocopies or computer print outs of art, except digital art, mailed in as ATCs and I do not want all 3 cards to be exactly the same, they can use the same image, I just ask them to change it up a bit by using different color scemes, composition, etc. I also don't want prints of the same digital image; I prefer people take the time to make separate and distinct cards for each card required. I know I put a lot of thought and work into each of my cards and like the same in return. Each of my cards is always the original art and is never a computer printing or photocopy of my art. Many people do trade prints and this it perfectly acceptable, so long as they are honest that it is a print you are trading for.
Also, if I have used the same exact image, I do tell others so they know theirs isn't the only one out there. But, as all are made by me and not prints, they are each unique originals. And digital people, I know in your case that a SINGLE print is an original, but once you start printing off more than one of each image, without changing it, it is no longer an original but a series. This isn't any different from artist prints of paintings, etchings, silk screenings, etc. and they should be labeled as a series, with the print's number and the number of prints that were made. For example, the artist made 300 prints from a single etching plate. He labels each print as it comes off the plate in the following manner: Title, Signature in pencil (as the signature on the plate is a printed signature), date and 1/300 on up to 300/300. Sometimes the artist would destroy the plate or keep it for a second or even third run. This has pretty much been the standard in art for at least 200 years. I used to sell vintage etchings and prints, so I know what I am talking about here.
Just my two cents worth and a little explanation about what I mean by asking for originals. Each host/ess is different.

Linda - I LOVE those mermaids! I can't beleive you did fronts and backs, that's so cool. In terms of 'originals' I think if you're talking about just using the same line art and re-colouring then it's fine. That's exactly what I did with the Chunky bird book line arts I did actually. :)

Pumpkin - I am just blown away by the fantastic colours of all your mermaids, they look too cool!

Okay, you people were making me feel lazy since so many of you are done, so I got down to work and now have the lineart for 8 of the cards done. Hope to get into the coloring this weekend maybe.

Glad to hear they made it on time, I was worried I'd left it a bit late. Never sure if they'll get shipped as letters or take a longer time if the post office decides they're a parcel.

Itrader reminds me....I tried to be sure EVERYONE received all their feedback, but if you DID NOT get feedback for one of my swaps, please, please let me know and I will do so right away! I know some of you are in two or more of the chunkies and so you are at risk for not receiving all your trader points.

SallyAnn~ GREAT job! I especially like the soda can idea! How did you keep the ends from being sharp?

SallyAnn

Thank you---I used heavy duty double sided tape to fasten it to bookboard--I then cut it out and sanded the edges and it it fine. Before I sanded it I thought I might have to use a puffy paint or something like that on the edges--glad I didn't have to do that.

Linda~ The little shell jars didn't add any extra postage cost that I know of and they were such a great idea! I hope everyone truly loves their pages. I still have to get my bound. I have been working on other art projects at the moment, but will get to them soon! I still have charms from months ago waiting for me to use them!

All the work is just so amazing. I need to learn how to do bead work!

Also want to say that I am sorry that I caused a hold up. I hope my pages were worth the wait.

Hi all!
I received my pages and they are awesome. I don't have them in front of me to thank you all personally. I haven't had much time to post lately and I apologize for holding up the rep / itraders. I will get caught up with them this week.
