Rolodex - The Revival

This will be an ongoing swap. I will serve as the monitor of this thread, posting updates as needed, making corrections and answering any questions, etc., but trading will initiated by you with the other participants who have signed up. Please use your personal messaging system to work out your trade requests.

Since this thread will be ongoing you can sign up or drop out when you wish, trade when ever and with whom ever you want at any time.

There will be some basic guidelines to follow:

1. The rolodex card size is 3 x 5 (if someone has the smaller size that's ok too).

2. You will set up your own trades via personal messaging or email.

3. The format for the address rolodex card should be uniform:

user name on top and first
real name
address
telephone and/or email are optional

4. Artists can list a couple of topics/themes they might like have on their card but
always remember this can be artist choice. Please discuss this with your trading
partner BEFORE the actual trade.

5. Please make the back of the rolo card look nice as well so if there is an address
change the new address can go right on the back and still look artsy.

NOTE: When making rolodex cards, if the person has a "c" behind their name it means they have a circular rolodex base and the art on the back should go upside down (holes at the top) and if the person has an "f" behind their name it means they have a flat rolodex base and the art should go in the same direction on the back as on the front (holes as the bottom).

I just got a new circular tray and I HATE it (nothing a lil paint won't fix, I think)... so I made myself a flat tray out of a cigar box and some wooden kabob skewers.

I'd like my format to be flat for now. Until I figure out what i'm going to go with my circular eyesore.

hi there and welcome. the front of the rolo is your main design....include the information of your screen name, address and anything else you'd like....like email or phone no. the back should be done nicely so if needed for address change you can flip it around and it will look nice too.

once you start to receive some rolos you'll get more ideas on how other people do them as well. that is always helpful.

Glad you mentioned the size of yours. Most everyone here has 3x5 unless stated otherwise.
Are you going to be "flat' or "round". This is dependent on your holder....meaning they sit upright in a non-spinning one....or they spin around.
When you're ready to jump in...I'd be happy to trade with you.
Feel free to ask any other questions. This group is bound to hav
all the answers if Roc isn't around.
(She expects to be at the bottom of everyone's list anyway ;) )

The 3x5 size is out there. A bit harder to find for some than others...but they make them.
Most of us however do use the actual rolo simply for the base or template and create the cards out of card stock...watercolor paper....matboard....whatever gives it a little strength.

Well that opens a whole new venue, I guess as long as the notches matches, it can be almost any size. For now I am going to use up my 100 cards !!! So I am up for all trades.

Well....I don't believe that the notches match for both sizes. Not sure...but I doubt it.
The other thing....if you're making rolos for others....we're collectiong 3x5...so the 100 that you've purchased....can only be used for whoever has that size....and I'm not sure anyone has it.
If you don't have a holder yet...you still have time to decide what size you want us to be sending to you!
If you'd like me to send you a few in the 3x5 size to use as a template....let me know.

livia, I use unlined 3x5 index cards, they're like $.60 at wal mart. Then you use a 3x5 rolo to mark the notches and cut them out.

Just a lil' note for our new rolo babies...there is no stress or deadlines on theses....that's what I think makes it fun. We all keep a list but do not go in the order it's written....everyone's muse (creative inspiration) peeks at diff. times and to make diff. things.....today I might want to do fairies and not cottages....you see what I mean? When we get something made we post a pic here on the thread....then the recipient knows they have yours coming soon and they may or may not move your name up on their list. Try and keep a good record.....sometimes our gals loose theirs (dahh, me?) and need to be reminded where they stand.

Any other rolo old timers here might agree or would like to tell us how they feel?

For the newbies... Hi Newbies!) most people like to cover their addresses in some way for security reasons...we are on a public website...DUH.
Some of us put up our cards before we have put up the address information, then fill it in before we send the card. As roc says, some people just cover it when they scan it in or blur it in some way. But DON"T think it isn't important. It is the whole reason we have rolos...so we have each other's address. I always include my email too.

oh shucks...no question is silly. please ask on anything you want to know more about. that's what we are all for. you can make them how ever you like...altho i will say that a few people (check on first page listings) have some specifics for overhang. you can always check with the person you are trading via personal message to see if they have a preference tho.

Pumpkin, great rolos! I opened rolo in my gallery, doubled clicked on image so I had just the image then copy that url and in your post here click on the insert image icon and paste the url. Took me a bit of messing around to figure it out but we Canadians are hearty types :eek:

I would like to join. I was about to join the rolo tread when the original site closed down. I just recently got my rolo and will try making some cards this week.

I am trying to figure out how this works. It looks like all cards are decorated on both sides and that your name and address is on one side of the card.

For trading it looks like you either make a card and offer it up for trade - and someone makes something from your list of preferences. Or you claim a card some one else offers up and then make something for them in return.

For the themes I am looking for: farm/agriculture, fruit, veggies, crops, farm animals, patriotic-USA (not political), foreign countries - cards should be "work place safe"
I have a flat rollo.

My rolo is at work and I am selecting themes that go with my job. I work for the US Department of Agriculture and my office helps promote US agriculture products in other countries.

Hi Ilah - big welcome.
I'll let the girls explain how it's all done. There are no strict rules - apart from the fact the Rocnic is always placed at the bottom of every list and Wanda tends to jump in first.
Process of swaping:
say you are opening a list and then just take the first few names otherwise you may be overwhelmed! (You can take as long or as short as you like to create the rolo) When the rolo is ready then send the person a message and drop a note in this forum.
rolo technology.
Basically one side has the picture, collage, painting, etc; the other side has your name, onsite name, address, and maybe email. Or is it the other way round??

Also you have to send Moonpies to people in the UK because they are not sold here.

The tabs on the top are usually your own choice. I've done both.
Mostly these days I do add one. I've seen some pretty elaborate add-ons by some as well :) It's not ususlly much of a problem for the hight end of thes....but still a good idea to check with the person you're making it for if you plan to go "big', just in case they're using a box instead of a rolodex.

If you're still trying to build up your list....be sure I'm on it! ;)

Sir Pumpkin, thankyou so much for for the poem. It is indeed, a famous one around these parts. There is a Public House (Bar) which carries the name of 'The Seven Wives' just a short walk from my abode, I have of course only ever passed by it's doors, but never entered such an establishment!!!!!!:wideeyed:
Although many young men have come to the town with great expectations of finding multiple young ladies to wed, the women of the town all know the poem, and the limit is only ONE! :yes:
My husband says that he's actually very grateful for the 'one' only limit. He's quoted as saying he has not "the time, energy or finance for any more". And in reference again to the poem he prefers puppies, and the thought of trying to get me to carry a sack instead of a posh handbag, is indeed a subject he would never dare enter into.:D
