Pages : [1] 2

A fabric postcard swap for partners. Each partner will send the other "ingredients" to make a fabric postcard. After receiving ingredients each partner will make the other a fabric postcard out of those ingredients, or at least using most of them on the card. The artist can add some of their own ingredients to the finished card also.
Please post your interest to participate. As names fill in I will post them into a partner group. Please post when mailing your ingredients; should be within two weeks of receiving a partner, when ingredients are received, posting your finished PC to your partner; should be within two weeks of receiving your ingredients and when receiving your postcard. We would all love to see the finished project too. You can mail the PC "bare naked" or in a clear bag. Postage is usually 58 cents US postage. Watch your thickness, use seed beads or small charms if included on the card. Any questions post to thread or PM me. Postcard must be 4X6 inches or a little less.
This is a great way to think creatively, challenge yourself to new mediums and receive a wonderful gift in the mail.

Jan
02-23-2008, 10:36 PM
Welcome poshscot. Please send items to make a postcard. You do not need to send the Timtex or stiffning in the center. You can send unusual fabrics, something representing your country, small beads, ribbons, sheers, lace, yarns whatever you wish to send. What you receive from monarch you will use to create her a Post Card. You do not need to use it all and you certainly can add something from your own stash to the finished card.

I would love to join this swap.

I am in England so if I could have a British (or European) partner if one signs up please. Or someone who wont mind the extra cost of posting to the UK. I know, postage costs can soon mount up, esp with sending small packets through the post.:twitcy:

Can you tell me, do you get a surcharge in America if you receive a postcard that is larger than 6"x4"? A postcard in England is a postcard, up to A5 size.

poshscot

Jan can I do 2, I'm happy to partner Mrs Ragbrutty then I'll have a local and an international partner.

Louise x

Jan
02-24-2008, 11:14 AM
Jonquil post your card, let us see what you are thinking.
Louise if the PC is over 4X6 it will be charged extra, it is out of the proper size for postcard fees. Actually the final limit on size is 6 1/4 by 4 1/4 inch. I would highly recommend you do not push that limit, go a little smaller.
It is so good to see interest in this swap, thanks.

I would love to play along with this. If I'm reading the thread correctly I would be partnered with jetlag. BTW, where is Milton? Since I'm new at this I want to check that I have this correctly: I send a batch of materials to my partner and she makes me a postcard from them. She sends me a batch of materials and I make a postcard for her. Have I got it?

julie

Jan
02-29-2008, 09:43 PM
You've got it Juliet and welcome. Not sure what a "batch" is in your mind but enough to make a PC, assortment of "things", you do not need to send the stiffening material.
PM jetleg and exchange mailing addresses. Post here when you mail your ingredients.
Carol, surprise me and then post it, I love surprises.

Jan
03-02-2008, 06:38 PM
WOW! that was quick, mailed that on Thursday morning. Maybe because we are neighbors?
Anyways thanks for letting me know the PC arrived and that you are pleased. Here is the card. Carol had sent me spring colors in fabrics, beads, sequins, embroidery thread, ribbons, a napkin and organdy with glitter on them. I did not use all of her fabrics and added a feather and some yarn of my own in the mix. I crossed pieced the fabric to make a rue and in some of the seams I added the ribbon and feathery yarn, appliqued the flower on the napkin and flower printed organdy on top. The layered a piece of glitter organdy over it to hold especially the paper down. Stitched the green embroidery thread and the sequins over that and did some hand bead work to finish it off. Also posted the back of the card on which I used the glue paper with a quote, message for Carol and her address all printed on the computer. I did mail the PC in a clear bag with 58 cents postage.
So my trade with Carol is complete.

Here goes : any special way of finishing off the back?

Lou x

Jan
03-05-2008, 12:06 PM
Wow that was quick Lou. The PC is very nice, creative and playful. It should travel well. You can cut fabric for the back and zig-zag or stitch off the edges. You can also use cardstock and finish off edges sewing through the paper, just be sure to glue it to back first. I usualy don't put glue close to the edge so the machine has to stitch through the glued part could gum up the needle machanism.
Thanks for the "play" ladies.

I think that this is a great idea. I have completed my postcard for PoshScot and hve some bits left over.

I was wondering what the best use for these bits where?
Maybe sign up again, add to them and send them to my new partner, as some kind of on going project?
Try and make another postcard from them? Send that out as a RAK to someone?
Keep them for a rainy day?

What does any one else think?

PoshScot, your postcard is with Royal Mail. Hope you receive it soon.

Jan
03-09-2008, 12:55 PM
Mrs. Rag....keep the treasures, they will come in handy for another project. It is an easy way to build some creative play stash. Don't feel you need to use everything you get in your project. That is the fun part of this swap we got some "new" stuff to play with. Gosh you gals have been busy. Stillatthetop I added you to the list. Your partner should arrive soon.
So glad you are "alive" again Susie your silence got us worried.
l have been posting updates to the top thread posting, just so you know.
Carol you are really pumping those PC's out.
Lou, thanks for the felting technique, I've got that too but just finished a needle felting project and thought maybe you went that way.

poshscot
03-09-2008, 01:33 PM
Not tried the needle felting, thats next on my list, so any advice would be welcome. Do you use a foam base or is there an alternative?

monarch
03-09-2008, 03:04 PM
poshscot - Beauitful postcard!!!!!! I love it!!! I''ll pm my e-mail address to you and would you please send me the instructions.......Thanks!!

As for the needle felting technique.....I use a foam base with one needle and a brush base with the multi needles...............

Jan
03-09-2008, 03:09 PM
Lou, I use a foam block but firstly I just work the needle and hold the clump of wool roving in my hand. As it get's bigger and I need to form it I use the foam block. Almost like creating something out of clay I work at it with the needle. Here is a picture of a little bird I made for a group swap of a bird tota. This little bird needed to have a hook and a loop so another bird could hang from it. I did some bead work on the bird and added beads to the connecting wires. Seven birds hang down with a bell at the end. It is a symbol of welcome and friendship and is hung near a doorway.

poshscot

Jan, love your bird, he is so cute. Love the idea too, definately next on my agenda once I have the needles.

Thanks for adding me. I anxiously await my partner.
Just curious...how many are sending their postcards through "naked"? And how do they arrive this way...dirty or in good order? I think it would be neat to have one hand stamped and sent through, but I am scared to try it without knowing if there has been success. Last Christmas I was going to make a postcard for my Mom and send it that way, but too many projects piled up in the way (including this site and swaps!) Oh well, there is always her Birthday. LOL.

Jan
03-10-2008, 12:10 AM
Great success. I have sent many of them "naked". Suggestions charms and larger beads do not travel well. Stamps hold on real good. I have not received any, and they have come from all over the world, that were dirty or spoiled in any way. It can happen but seems rare. Try it, it is great fun. It is called "art in the mail".

I think another fun twist on this would be to do a three-way partnership where A sends ingredients to B and B makes a card for C; B sends to C who makes a card for A and C sends to A who makes a card for B.

That is a neat idea, too. I like the fact that I can share some of my faves and still get some of them back, though. And it will be interesting to see what my partner comes up with out of my stuff...in an upclose kind of way, not just the posted scan/pic. It sure is hard deciding what to send, though. I want to be sure to include enough to spark those mental juices, and try to keep them to a similar theme/color family. I'm a bit nervous about what I will be getting, too. And whether it "speaks" to me creatively. I am glad we can also add some of our own stuff to complete a theme. I think that takes a bit of the pressure off.

I sure hope I can come up with something as wonderful as the cards you all have shared. I'm anxiously awaiting my goodies to craft from. My partner is international, so they have a ways to travel. I hope I sent goodies enough to inspire her to create as well. These look like a lot of fun. I still can't decide if I wish to send her card "naked". I hesitate because of the international aspect, but I am sure it would be neat with the American postmark on there.

They love it. Sometimes when I bring in several for a swap I give our postmaster one too. They are so grateful. We have two neighboring small town postoffices and I mail between both of them, both postmasters love getting one. I also gift our rural mail carrier with some at Christmastime. This is "art in the mail".

favourite machine? Back up machine eh??? :elvis:
I have an old second hand machine sans instructions, that I haven't the foggiest idea how to use. I struggle just to sew a straight line...
I'd love to know how to sew, I really need to sort some beginner classes out at the local college some time if the finances allow. :mask:

I have some needles for sewing heavyweight fabrics and some needles for stretchy fabrics, but how do I tell which are which? How do I set the tension and how do I do that zigzag stitching at seams?

Ragbutty? is this a Freudian slip? :twitcy: The name is Ragbrutty; a Ragbutty is what I end up with after hours with the sewing machine. LOL :jiggy:

At least I can sew by hand. :jimlad::yes:

Hi Mrs. R: (I'm not even going to risk getting it wrong!)

If you post some details about your machine (type, model, etc.) we might be able to offer some suggestions.

As far as the zig-zag, do you mean along the edges? I usually put a piece of tear away stabilizer behind the piece and zig zag just off the edge of the piece onto the stabilizer. Then when I'm all done I tear off the stabilizer. Some paper would work well, too -- use something lightweight, newsprint would be perfect.

Mrs. Ragbrutty...I missed your post earlier. Sorry. I have taught sewing classes at a fabric store, and am familiar with many different brands of machines. I currently own 4, all different brands and ages. My newest machine is 22 years old. I bought it new when I was 18. I love the older machines, personally. They are powerhorses. I would love to help you learn to sew, and I may be able to locate a manual for you. PM me if you wish and let me know what your troubles seem to be. Perhaps I can help you pinpoint the problem.

My sewing machine is a Jones VX760 http://sewingonline.co.uk/machines/brothervx760/
can you work out how it's threaded?
I found a manual for another sewing machine at a jumble sale, I shall read that to see what general advice it can give me. However, all or any advice on sewing with a machine would be great - from anyone.

Jan - the misspelling of my name had me in stitches!

Mrs. R:

Check out these links:

http://www.expertvillage.com/video-series/1001_sewing-machine.htm
Videos for how to do a number of sewing-related things. Will walk you through how to thread a sewing machine.

This one http://www.sewusa.com/Threading_Diagrams/Threading_Pages/Brother_Sewing_Machine_Threading/brother_vx_757_threading_diagram.htm
is a complete diagram for threading your specific machine.
That same site offers a manual for purchase for your machine for $10
Here's the link to manuals http://www.sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Instruction_Manuals.htm
Your machine is listed as a Brother VX760.
Your tension adjuster is the dial to the far left on the front of the machine, just to the left of the uptake arm. It has numbers (probably 1-5). Remember Lower Looser (the lower the number the looser the upper tension). You might also need to adjust your bobbin tension but that is more complicated. Try setting your tension dial to the middle number and see how that does. Report back and I can walk you through adjusting your bobbin tension. You will need a tiny screwdriver.

Your profile doesn't say but I'm thinking you are in the UK. If you have trouble finding a manual let me know and I'll send you one from the US.

Whew. Sorry for this delayed update. I PMed poshscot earlier, but then had to get back to "stuff". I received her postcard last week. It is grand. I have hers finished and will be mailing as soon as funds allow. I will post pics to my gallery soon.

Hey kids I'm alive and however else the song goes.

Monach, I am creating postcards for you. The first is done - it was just something I had on my mind. Obviously I was thinking of this when I put together your bits and pieces so it was amusing to see the overlap. Another I am doing is far more experimental for me at least, may or may not work.

I have a busy day ahead of me today - I'm running my first ever race today, only 10k, but it's enough for starters. Then I'm cycling home. about 35 - 40 miles.

No reason why I shouldn't get your card packaged and posted tomorrow, don't think it will travel naked and arrive in one piece. Might try scanning it tonight if I can stay awake that long.

Hope all is well with everyone. Need to get going now.

Kity.

mrs. ragbrutty's postcard........Since you didn't send me any matertial for the background, I use some fabric I bought awhile back......I also use a few of my own things which I normally try not to do but I ruined a ribbon that you sent me and a couple of charming things that I was going to use.......Sorry.......but I do hope you like this.....

I used green netting on the right side and added beads and decorative stitching, added you flowers that you sent and added seed beads and a dangly thing that you sent me....Also a blue seed bead circle to the center.......Colors didn't scan tooo well......

So, is this going to be an ongoing thing? Are people going to keep signing up and being paried up in perpetuity?:cute:

Wow! It is nice to hear from some of you "quiet" ones. Seems like many are in process to complete your trade even if you are running race, biking long treks, planning PC's and all the fun stuff you now have as stash to dream about.
LittleMissFirefly welcome, we should have a partner for you soon. Maybe TheeCoyote would join you. We will keep this thread active as long as we have interested participants. It only takes two.
Carol your PC is beautiful. I love the elegant look of this one.
Naked is fun to mail and I find the small seed beads seem to travel. I do glue the thread down on the back so it would not rip out as easily if there was a tug on the bead.
Hope you all had a wonderful Mother's Day.

Can I do two?
I would like to be paried up with the next two in line, Monarch and LilMissFirefly.

I often have a LOT of down time at work. This is something I can take with me to keep occupied and do something productive.
I'll check back later.

Was the picture an ingredient? That is a great PC, what fun. Do the "girls" have some history attached to them?

goatgoddess
05-13-2008, 09:49 AM
I can send it naked - it should make it ok :)

I added the girls - they are off a cd of pics - when I print out pic on fabric I try to fill the sheet up so this was one I had sitting around, everything else is Pippins :)

Jan

Ahh that explains the girls and no personal story. I thought maybe Pippin sent those pic's to personalize the card. You did a great job on that card Debra.
Posh, I am getting your PC all arranged in my head. Will be on it's way soon.

Pippin, I got your extremely fat envie of ingredients today! This is going to be quite a challenge to use most of the ingredients in a card....my brain is beginning to turn...hope it doesn't start smoking. Thanks so much for all the fabric/fibers.

My "kits" for monarch and LilMissFirefly are packed, sealed and ready to go. I forgot to include batting. Sorry. I'm hoping you have something suitable on hand. I sent some decorative thread, but you will each have to use some of your own thread (or floss) too. Sorry, hard to predict these things. Oh, and I hope you have at least one very skinny needle.

Now this is just ridiculous!! Two packages that dont make it to ND? I am worried that the postcard will get lost as well. My cards for another swap have not got there, yet two out of three packages that I sent last week to Nebraska and NY are there already within a week.
OK I will package up a third envie of goodies and get it out tomorrow! I know the address cannot have washed off if it got wet as I always use marker. Nothing has been returned either.
