This would be my first Pick-a-theme swap.
A question, please, before I join ~ what are the differences between easy/generic and regular themes?
Thanks!

blueskysunburn
02-24-2008, 09:23 PM
Easy generic would be something not too specific i.e. dogs, cats, trees, sunset, etc.

Now you could choose those as your theme in the regular theme group if you'd like except you may be required to create something a little more specific for the other members of your group - sabre tooth tiger, wonder woman, mermaid, man jumping on pogo stick, etc.

Does that help?

mrubyjean
02-25-2008, 01:12 AM

So far group 3, 5, 6 and 7 are all full. I will add one more group if there is demand. There are still spots open for collage and open medium. Seems to be a large interest in hand/drawn painted this swap. If anyone wants that medium that didn't get in please let me know.

How do digital cards work? Made in programs like photoshop and then printed out on heavy paper or something? Just curious! never done digital heh.

blueskysunburn
03-02-2008, 07:46 PM
Yes, though not sure about the paper. I don't do digitals so I wouldn't know the best paper for it.

Lois
03-03-2008, 12:51 AM
If you like playing on a computer, digital art is great fun.

I came at art from being a photographer, then added acrylics, watercolor, and sketching my kitty. Then I discovered ATCs and started going wild. Eventually I added collage and, most recently, metal embossing and alcohol inks.

But probably my best work is done in digital art (graphic design, messed up photos, whatever you choose to call it).

For someone just exploring making digital ATCs, I suggest you take one of your own pictures and open it in some photo-manipulationg program and just play with the various filters, effects, and color shifts. I use Photoshop Elements (about $60 online or sometimes free with a scanner or camera). There are other programs, I just happen to like this one.

If you don't have your own photo, you can do some great things just using colors, gradients, and layers -- or even just typed words. (I'll see if I can attach an example to the end of this.)

An "abstract" style works great if you want to make one great big image, print it on letter-sized paper, and then chop it into 9 ATCs. (You have to place your areas of interest strategically so each segment looks finished, it can be challenging, but fun.)

If you are used to doing digital ATCs, you'll already know how to print out high-quality cards. If you are new to digitals, you might want to practice a little with trying different papers (which make an INCREDIBLE difference!) and with various printer settings (look in the "Page Set-up" menu item for places to change those). If you don't have a printer or don't want to buy good glossy photo paper; you may be able to get someone else to print your image.

If you have access to a local KINKO'S store, one easy way is to take them your file on a flash drive (thumb drive) and ask them to print the image using "glossy photo paper".

If you made an ATC-sized image, ask them to print it "nine-up" on a page.

I hope there are some other graphic designers out there who will want to sign up for this. Thanks, Jennifer, for adding the 8th group!

-- Lois Richter, Davis, California

ps: THIS example was made using a program called "The LogoCreator", which I also like.

Lois

To expand a little on my "theme", what I mean by "finding the edges" is to do something to exagerate the lines and outlines within a photo.

There is an actual filter in Photoshop Elements called "Finding edges", and another called "Glowing edges", and several ways you could use "Unsharp Mask" or "Contrast" to make the edges of things extreme.

I was thinking of the edges of object as photographic elements, but if someone wanted to think of edges as the SUBJECT of the image, that would be fine with me too.

... not sure about the paper.

I order my paper from "Inkpressions" in NY. They make the very best glossy photo paper I've ever used. Better than Kodak, Epson, Fuji, or any other paper I've tried. The paper at Kinko's is also very good -- not quite as thick, but excellent color quality. (Price is not a good predicter of high-quality paper; I've tried more expensive ones that weren't as good.)

Do NOT print your color image out on plain paper -- or even cardstock -- and expect it to look very good. I sometimes use matter photo cardstock (also from Inkpressions) for printing out sketches, misty or low-color scenes, two-sided cards, or grey-scale images. Otherwise, I use glossy or semi-gloss.

Because glossy photo paper can only be printed on one side, I print the backs on separate cardstock, stick them together with spray photo-mount, and cut them up. (In my photo management program, I have a choice of printing "9-up" -- which makes exactly the right sized images for ATCs. On the Mac, use iPhoto's print command. I don't know how to do it on Windows.)

Hope this helps.

Wonderful shrooms! They do look psychedelic that way, don't they?

You four sure did right by me. I hope I can do as well for you.

I'll post what I'm working on as soon as I figure out how to send "thumbnails" that open a separate image (instead of the full image in the message). I'll be gone tomorrow, so will probably get some done this weekend.

We are on deadline for APRIL 18th, aren't we?

Lois, I had to laugh! Right now I ONLY do digital! While there IS a definite bias in swaps, I have had no troubles finding enough swaps and personal trades to keep me more than busy! Oh, and now I'm working in Art Weaver to make "digitally hand-drawn pieces", I may never get out the pastels again (yeah, right!)!

Glad you like your squirrel! I don't usually use those particular filters and getting the pic to come out the way I wanted was a real challenge. Thanks!

What's Art Weaver and where are you trading your pieces?

Art Weaver (http://www.artweaver.de/index.php?en_version) is a free prog out of Germany that has an interface VERY similar to Photoshop - makes it very easy to just get in there and go! It's got a lot of the functionality of Painter (http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Product/1166553885783), probably equivalent to about V6 or 7. It also has links with two other progs that I am playing with right now: Project Dogwaffle (http://www.thebest3d.com/dogwaffle/products/index.html) and Pixarra (http://www.pixarra.com/). My current Avatar was completed totally in Art Weaver using the Pastel brushes and layers to bump up the colors.

I'm thinking that these three will be the core that I use instead of Painter. Even if I bought the full, newest versions of the last two it will be (a lot) less than Painter and some cooool features even painter doesn't have!

I just got started about a month at the OS before things went South...so far I've only traded here, but I've had plenty of interest in my work, especially my first offerings of dragonflys. Check out my gallery for some of my newest stuff. My older stuff is on my flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dhawktx/) page.

PM me if you have questions about the above!:D

Thanks so much for scanning all of those! I have a question, though. I have tried to download my cards so I can put them in my gallery here, but haven't been able to. If I right-click and save, it saves as a white box. I can't seem to figure out a way to download them. I know I had this trouble with the 80's cartoon swap, too, and I finally figured it out, but unfortunately I can't remember what I did! Hey BSSB, can you bring my cards to the meet-up on Sunday if they are in? It'll save me the postage, lol.

Hmmm.... My pictures aren't showing up, although they are linked... bummer. They are in my gallery.

Received cards today from kysunflower and hhc.

I am hoping to get the photo pool updated soon. I'm still dealing with the painters on my house. It's turning out to be more time consuming than I thought it would be. :arghh:

Re house painters: Just think how lovely your house will be when they are done... bless their hearts. :D

Mine should get there any day now, I can't remember if I even took a pic of them before sending but I'll be away in L.A. until the 28th.

I remember you posted a while back. I will not swap out until Saturday's mail has come so they have an extra day to get here. I scan all the cards in anyway so if you find you didn't scan them and want a copy let me know.

Received cards today from topacelot and I'm on my way to pick up midnites momentarily. I am still missing a few players cards so I will wait until tomorrows mail. Otherwise you will be receiving the cards you made for those players back with your returns.
