Sounds great. Kati, Hood River isn't far from Portland on the Columbia River Gorge.

60 Miles East of Portland Kati. It takes me about 47 minutes to get to the Portland Airport. The drive from Portland is GORGEOUS, several waterfalls along the way and most of the drive is along the Columbia River. I think a group of people are talking about car pooling from Eugene OR too ( A little over 350 miles from Eureka)

Coffee and LilBad Pm me your address and I'll send you out these great little magazines that highlight all of the fun activities and attractions in the Hood River Area. Cheryl, Trina and Martha, I've already got yours and your books will be out this week.

hrm. i must think this over. how much do hotel rooms go?

RobbyGirl
03-31-2010, 06:19 PM
I found rooms for $125 a night with two queen beds so they can be shared (62.50 per person per nights stay.) Bonus, they are a block from my house and the least expensive hotel in town during resort season. I'll cook a lot or order pizza to keep eating costs down for everyone. The wineries charge $5 for wine tasting but you get a lot of wine!

lolol! i'm going to check my plans . . . i haven't yet bought the ticket to Rochester, which will be followed by 1 to 2 weeks at my parents' house in WV. if i'm back in OR in time for this weekend, i will SO be there! :)

i'll also keep it in mind as i book my flights--if i can get a decent rate and come back here, i'll do it. :)

I would love to come to the Hood River gathering and meet you all in person! I don't drive so am dependant upon a kind soul from the Eugene area who would be willing to offer up a seat in their car. I could definately chip in for gas, etc.

Sounds like a lot of us will be caravaning up I-5.

Hey Girlie,

I was about to ask if it was just an Oregon thing, because I was going to use the excuse of "I'm thinking about moving to Oregon" *** so I could combine a looksee with the gathering, but I see other states on the list, so I don't have to use it to elbow my way in, right?

This sounds great, I'd love to attend so I'll gather info about the gathering and see if I can make it work.

***I know what you're thinking - we really need another Californian in Oregon right?

Rooms are really tough to get around here in July because it's the height of resort season. I've only booked 2 rooms so far (each has 2 queen beds.) So who thinks they are coming and will want a room? Who is willing to share rooms?

It doesn't have to be set in stone because they can be cancelled up until 2 weeks before. I just want to save enough now while they are available at this hotel cause the others are $300-400 a night which gets prohibitive. These are $125 a night, nothing fancy, but clean and reasonable and 2 blocks from my house.

Rogue Gal

Aww, thanks lilbad - you're awesome!

So I guess that means that you can put me on the list RobbyGirl :) I'm up for sharing a two bed room with someone at the motel.

Yay this is looking like its going to be a fun weekend. I still haven't booked my tickets, as I am trying to decide whether to book flight, car rental, and hotel all together to get a greater discount - or to just do the car and flight and have flexibility for where I land in the evenings. I have friends all around the Portland area to crash at their places too. I kind of want to leave my options open. But I am also game to bunk with a fellow AFA mate to keep costs down too. I don't snore - honest! And count me in for the wine tasting!!! :)

If I was fond of dark small cells with a toilet/sink combo and a springy cot for a bed, I would high jack the plane, force them to detour to Australia, pick you up (and your passion fruity beverages), and force them to come back to the USA and land us in the Hood River vacinity!!! I would SOOOO do that for you.... if I liked dark small prison cells. But, sadly - I thrive on natural lighting.....

I can't wait to meet everyone in person! I used to live in Oregon, was even born there many many years ago, so it will be hard to only stop by the state for 5 days!
I do have another commitment for that Sat. afternoon - an old friends long over due wedding reception [I have to approve of the new wife ;)] but otherwise I am planning to mostly tour art galleries, stop at various places along the road to do plein air art, the wine tasting the lavendar fields, etc. and hang with all of you fabulous peeps!! Anyone is welcome to join me for some of my side ventures. But I warn you - I don't bother with maps, I just go where the road takes me.... :)

WOW this is exciting! I've booked two hotel rooms and I think LilBad is booking another two giving us 4 rooms and 8 Beds( 2 people per room 1 per bed.) We should start pairing up people who want to room together and see if we need more rooms because they go fast this time of year!

My Dining Room Table seats 8 and I can easily fit in another large folding table so we'll have plenty of room to art and I have a nice view of the Columbia River and Mt. Adams!

It will be plenty warm enough but if you plan to go strolling along the river you will want a wind breaker. We are known for our wind here, it's the windsurfing/Kitesailing capital of the world! People come from every country to participate in that sport here.

There are 3 Wine tasting venues in downtown alone and many more along the country side. Also many art galleries. I'll start collecting maps to send you all. We also are huge for our fruit orchards and have a "Fruit Loop" tour that time of year and the cherries should be perfect about then! I have a dear friend that owns a cherry orchard if anyone wants to go picking!

If anyone is interested in White Water Rafter, Cycling, hiking, etc. Let me know and I'll send you info. We have at least 8 waterfalls in the vicinity.

I was going to mail everyone out these gorgeous magazines that depicts many of the entertainments of our area but I went to the USPS today to find how much and they would cost $5 each to mail...sheesh! So I'll have to pass on that but I can easily get literature on any individual events that might interest you all!

First of all - YAY that Jaw is blowing off the country faire to hang with us!!! You are making an EXCELLENT CHOICE!
Second - for the record - I make kick A** frozen margaritas!
Third - I will bunk with anyone that doesn't snore or smoke. actually if you smoke it won't bother me as long as it's not in the room. But the snoring - NO way. I'm getting away from my husband and his snoring for 5 days!!! I don't need to listen to someone else snore to make me feel "at home" LOL:rolleyes:
I'm game for the white-water rafting and hiking too. Especially if I bring my backpack with a few art supplies - I love to go on hikes and stop somewhere and do a little painting of whats in front of me!
Robby - are any of the wine tasting venues at actual vinyards? I would LOVE to take the ol' art pad and sit in a vinyard somwhere among the grapes and dirt and a good bottle of red and doodle. :) But I'll take what I can get.
There should be plenty of info on the Internet - maybe if you see something in that magazine that you think we might like youo could post a link to it here???
Okay - I'm totally stoked now!!! :D

Oh yeah - and I am SOOO game for nabbing some fresh cherries from the trees - as long as we can doodle there too!

Hmm, you bring up some excellent points! My hubby is a snorer too - I can handle the low rumble kind (akin to a cat's purr), but if it builds to a crescendo of noise no way! I'm very sensitive to cigarette smoke so I don't want to room with a smoker, but I've traded with a lot of you and haven't smelled smoke on your cards so I think I'm pretty safe :)

Wine tasting, margaritas, hiking, cherry picking, art galleries, etc. all sound great to me! Are there any good places to pick up cool art supplies or pretty papers nearby?

Most definitely I think I know just the vinyard too, with the Mt. Adams as a backdrop, I'll pre-scout them for landscape beauty before July, Margaritas sound great I have a Silver Bullet (Blender.) Tons of gorgeous doodling spots too Trina, so we're good to go! We can plan a few excursions or not plan them and go but I'll keep my house open for less adventuress souls who'd rather art at home

Are there any good places to pick up cool art supplies or pretty papers nearby?
Yes there is and I'm going to talk to the Owner about using their Art Room while you all are in town!

Is anyone allergic to dogs? I have 4! I do have a separate area to keep them in so we won't be overwhelmed by all their cuteness but I don't think my house would be good for someone who is seriously allergic.

Hope you can Join us HHC!

Sounds like Trina (AKMama) and Christine(Rogue Gal) will make good roommates (No Smoking, No Snoring Zone) so one of the rooms I booked is yours. (MRubyJean) Martha took the other. I'm going to try to book two more today, once I do I'll check to see who wants them.

Great Oksana. I'll pm you my last name, could you call the hotel and change the reservation to your name for one of the rooms.

Who'd like to room with Oksana?

HHC room would be $119 a night divided by two (when sharing a room) so about $200 total per person for the 3 nights (I added in a bit extra for those pesky hotel taxes.) I've already reserved them at that rate. The B&Bs around here are actually a bit more expensive.

Robby - question? Do you have us booked at the other place for 3 nights as well? And if so, which three nights? I have a place to stay for the 8th and can bunk with friends in Portland on Sunday if need be. Just trying to line up where I'll be bunking for the evenings I'm there.

Also for everyone: I've been thinking.... [Yes! that can often mean trouble....]
BUT, should we bring some already made ATCs, etc. for trading in person? And/or what and how many art supplies should we bring?? I'm thinking my luggage will consist of two change of clothes and the remaining allotted 48 lbs. will be art supplies. LOL

AND - what are you thinking for meals??? Potluck?? theme night?? a.k.a Mexican, Italian, BBQ? Or do we just want to wing it and decide what we want when we want it?? As long as I have wine and water and chocolate - I'll be happy. :)

Ditto on the wine, water and chocolate. LOL! Maybe we could order in pizza one night...

I would most likely be staying Fri, Sat and possibly Sunday nights. It's about a 5 1/2 hour drive for me... with good traffic.

Oksana
04-11-2010, 11:41 PM
Robin what time do you plan to start 1st day? I will have to drive about 6 hours, so I need to know, when do I leave.May be I should even come the night before?

RobbyGirl
04-12-2010, 12:07 AM
I will cook 1 night (Something simple for lots of people...pasta maybe), we can do pizza one night for sure cause it's easy and wing the other night, maybe go take over a local restaurant....how does that sound?

I'm already making cards for live trading Trina! Although I'm sure we'll make and trade some on the spot too!

I booked the rooms for the evenings of the 9, 10, 11th Trina does that work for you?

Oksana, I didn't plan a starting time, I figure people will dribble in on the 9th as their schedules allow. If anyone wants to come on the 8th that's fine too, just let me know! I recommend that you plan enough time to stop by Multnomah Falls as you come down I84, it's a lovely waterfall to see and if you have time the hike to the top is very cool!

I wasn't planning on doing too much planning unless you all want set events. I figured we'd kind of play it as we go and I'll keep my house open to everyone for arting and a group trip for wine tasting. Other than that I thought I'd point you all in the directions that interest you and those that want to hang and drink and art can do that. I don't mind planning though if you all would prefer structure? Thoughts???

Yes, we do not need a tight schedule, it would be no fun..I just did not want to miss anything interesting..:) I also had not driven on my own that far before. With my family we visited Portland once, driving this way, from Spokane.I remember that waterfall and another one, right near the road, smaller, but also beautiful. So, I guess, I will start driving in the morning of the 9th and hopefully by the night I will find the place. I will get to the city fine, but in the city I am always get lost:) The most importaint to have place to stay. I will try to call and reserve the hotl roon on my name.

It would be nice to have a roommate! Anyone? I am not smoking/not snoring, promiss!

I would gladly be an axe murder TO pedophiles!

I used to have an informative website regarding the condition my daughter was born with to help other families going through the same thing, UNTIL, I started getting emails from Perverts and the like who found images and links of her as an infant on sights titled WTF [what the f*ck] and child porn sights!!! :arghh: Even after shutting down the site and getting the FBI involved, I would still get email requests to see her pictures!!! For weeks after, I honestly would daydream of torturing those individuals and tieing them to a stake in the middle of a giant bonfire and watch them burn as I roasted hotdogs!
Okay maybe TMI - but as long as you are not one of those people who emailed me back then --- you are safe with me! :D

Not sure what my financial and living status will be the next few months (SO much to share in the way of ch-ch-changes in my life!), but if I can swing it, I'll drive Towanda down and sleep in her. I need a level place to park her and an electric hookup..no water or sewage required. Any thoughts on where I might find same? Oh, and if it can be within biking distance to your place, I won't have to beg a ride from anyone, since I don't have an appropriate toad ("She's a good little car...she goes where she's toad"). Not promising anything, but it may happen. Hey, I'm not gonna make Rochester...

Hey check out this link (http://www.gorgeguide.com)for more interesting info about the Hood River area and the events happening while you are here! The Lavendar Festival is on the 10th and the Lavendar Farm opens up to the public and artist for all day events. 4 Acres of Lavendar in full bloom is something to see and smell, those allergic to bees need not apply!

Speaking of allergies, I have 4 dogs! I'll keep them out of our hair but if you have a severe allergy my house is not the place to visit!

I've got some information goodies to mail out to you all soon.

Though I DO have allergies, I'm not allergic to dogs and LOVE DOGS. My allergies are more seasonal. I am hoping that I have been away from that area long enough that they won't kick in while I'm there, but I am preparing my body for the allergy season regardless.

Update on hotels. Sunset Hotel has no double queen rooms left as of this morning but they have 3 rooms left with 1 queen bed. If you think there is a chance you might be coming please reserve a room because that's about all that's left in town for that weekend except for rooms in the $350-$550 a night range and even those are few. There are several events going on that weekend, Lavendar Festival, Cherry Festival and Kiteboarding for Cancer. I didn't just pick a busy weekend, all Summer is like this in a resort town

This is who/where I think we have booked right now:

Love's Riverview
Room #1 MRubyJean (Martha) and Christie.
Room #2 Joy Flower (Cheryl Ann)

Sunset Motel
Room#1 --AKMama (Trina) and Rogue Gal (Christine)
Room#2--HHC (Helen) and JAW (Julie)
Room #3--Lil (Shirley) Bad and Oksana

Please let me know if I've gotten it wrong? Would anyone like the 2 Queen Room I have booked over at Riverview, or has someone booked it that I am unaware of?

That's an idea Jaw, though I would be oh so nervous and sad if they got lost in the mail. Plus I will probably be using much of it right up until I leave. At least summer cloths shouldn't take up too much space. I was thinking of putting most of it as carry on if I can get away with it.

camcas
05-07-2010, 06:03 AM
Hey-i'd pack the art supplies in a carryon and ship the clothes-always can get more clothes easily enough--besides Trina,if it were me ..jammies dont take up much space and all you arty types will be fine with that...or is Cindy planning to have a dress for dinner arrangement in which case I reckon you'd get away with the addition of your string of pearls!!!
BTW..on another note-i just bought some copics for mothers day for myself!!!!! [insanely expensive in Australia-6.95 AUD for ciao and 9.99 for sketch] so I bought on line from oozak.com
where did you get yours and which type and what colours???I'm having a copic frenzy at the moment

HotMamaRama
05-07-2010, 09:59 AM
I'm thinking along those lines too Camcas. I can always buy new clothes - my art stuff is more valuable to me than a few shorts and t-shirts. But I'm liking the jammies idea too. :)
Congratulations for your most deserved Mothers Day present to yourself! That's how I get most of my "gifts". He doesn't have to go shopping, and I get what I want! :D But ouch!! That price tag is much higher for your markers.
I ordered mine from Dick Blick online. Lately they have been having some good promotional sales and sketch copics that are normally around $6.68 ea. I've gotten for $4.07 ea. (US that is). Plus, they have had some good deals on shipping. Normally to ship to AK is more expensive then what you order, but the last two times the most I paid in shipping was 10.75 for priority mail. The last time it was only 4.00. Their promo, says free shipping - but it never counts for Alaska, but at least they are drastically reduced.

I've never used Tombo water based markers so not sure how they are different. I bought mine because I needed some flesh tones and I like how the Copics layer and blend once I got my hands on some. But really I am still learning how to use them. I will be bringing mine to Oregon, maybe you could bring your Tombo's and we can have a share, show and tell! :D

RobbyGirl
05-07-2010, 11:30 AM

well, it's official . . . i won't be back from my trip East when this weekend takes place! i'm so disappointed! :(

my grandmother is really slipping rapidly into Alzheimer's, so post-Rochester, I was going to stay with my parents in the Pittsburgh area for a bit to visit and help out. Now, I'm looking to stay a little longer to help my mom avoid putting my gram in a nursing home for a few more weeks--because I can stay with her.

So, hopefully the next time around when there's a PNW get together I'll actually be able to make it! I'm driving my own ass all the way to Seattle, if that's what it takes.

Camcas, I really wish that you could join us, but I wish we could all join you even more! Sounds like you live in a fabulous place!

AKmamaof2 - early riser, huh? I would sleep until 11:00 given the choice, so I won't be joining you in the 6:00 wake up, but I'm sure we'll do alright. My quirks are that I like to read in bed until I get sleepy, and I take looong showers.

I totally want to trade with you all! I was planning to make atcs but am open to other ideas too. I'd like to put some ephemera baggies together for everyone but it may depend on how many people are coming. We'll see how well my good intentions pan out.

HHC

So, lets see. We're trading ATC's, maybe doing tip in journal pages (when we learn just exactly what those are) and what else?

I'll be bringing my art "bag o goodies", and a moleskine journal to play in. Other than camera and wine, what else do I need? :)

Amy, bummer we'll miss you this time. How cool that you're going to be with your grandmother. That's something you just don't want to miss.

Amy - I was so hoping to hang with you in person, but you are soooo making the right decision to spend time with your grandma.

Christine - I don't like that I wake up early. I don't WANT to wake up early. My bladder wakes me up and then my brain turns on, and, then I'm awake. That said, I will be lucky if I sleep at all on this trip, as I want to make the most of every minute I have free. Most likely I will be gallivanting around Hood River at all hours taking in every sight, sound, taste, and art I can do in 5 days.

I'd like to bring bags of goodies, but I will be greatly limited to how much I can take on the plane.

HHC - other than camera and wine.... my mother would say clean undies, but really camera, wine, art supplies pretty much covers it in my book! :D

I'm sorry to here about your Grandma Amy! We'll miss you but I'm hoping we can make this an annual or bi-annual event!

I share really well so I will have my art supplies available too. I'm open to all types of trading all though I usually pretty much stick to ATCs, Jewelry and altered dominoes. I'm curious to hear about the journals (tip pages.)

Christine of course I'll add you to the coming list! The hotel is about 2 blocks from my house, reasonable walking distance but I am more than happy to shuttle you too!

Goody bags what a great idea, I'll have to start working on some!

I'm so excited!

That's perfect, RobbyGirl! That way Trina can get started on her day bright and early and I can just doze and wander on over when I haul my butt outa bed :) Or maybe she'll be a good influence on me and I'll get an earlier start to my day. I like *being* up early, it's the *getting* up that I find difficult.

Trina, don't worry about bringing goody bags or anything extra - just bring yourself and your art supplies. The airlines have made it hard enough to bring what you need when you travel, nevermind the extras :)

Robin, thanks so much for organizing this and sharing your home with us - you've gone above and beyond to host this!

And did I hear something about wine, chocolate, and margaritas? I am SO there!

The tip in journal thingie...I took a moleskeine journal to AFA in Indy last year. Passed it around and folks did pages in it as I did for them. It was hard to keep up, so this year, we are bringing pages...in my case probably watercolor paper....with our names on the back to pass out. That way, the artist can do their page at their leisure and then the owner of the journal can 'tip' it in or glue it in. Does that make sense?

RobbyGirl
05-12-2010, 02:02 PM
Ahhh yes that makes sense, what size pages are they Shirley?

lilbad
05-12-2010, 02:21 PM
The journals come in many dif. sizes. Mine happens to be the 3x5. However, some folks just had old books they had altered. Also, a few had chunkies on a ring that we worked on.

I second this statement!! I LOVE this idea!! I would totally be game for this.

So basically I can precut whatever size paper I want (with in reason), put my name on the back, and pass them around for others to do. Then collect them all and assemble them together in some way right!?!?

OOO-oOOO OOoO OOOo (said in my best Arnold Horshack voice - for you young ones, that would be from Welcome Back Kotter!)
I just bought a 6" X 6" 400 series Acrylic linen canvas pad with 10 sheets in it. I could cut some watercolor papers that size too and give folks the option of either one to work with. I am so excited about this idea!!:spinny:

An amazing box of Australian goodies arrived from Camcas today!! CAMMY WOW you are such a sweetheart! We will be spoiled with these treasures. I'm sorry it was soooo expensive to mail. Rest-Assured we will send you pictures and lots of local goodies and art in return! (Nice how I promise for the whole group huh!:err:)

I was thinking of getting some Alaskan goodies together too. Not sure how well a giant King Salmon will travel though, so I had better stick to non parishables. If I can swing it past TSA inspection, I was hoping to bring along some Echo Lake Locker Cheese spread, and Reindeer sausage (for the non-vegans) Alaska wildberry CO. does some fair tasting chocolates, and jams/jellies. I'll see what I can muster up.

Hi everyone! I had to read several pages of the chattting at once.
1.Robin, thanks for having me in "for sure" list, but I am not from Seattle(never was). I will drive from Cheney, it is from Spokane,WA area.
2. It would be nice if EVERYONE prepares at list ATCs to trade.
3. I need to read again more attentively about an art journal pages, I mean the procedure how people plan to make it.
4. Would be nice to have a workshop! Themes?Techniques? Or in general? Will someone organize it or who wants?
All right, I am going back to reading your posts...Sure ,we all are going to have a good time during this gathering!

Also - I am soo happy to be able to contribute to your little gathering cos I am soo grateful for all the fun and cyberfriendship and awesome art i get from you guys..a coupla pics in the gallery and a gorey blow by blow description of what you got up to will suit me just fine!!!
Of course..if you really MUST send chocolate i will not say no-please just bear in mind there are VERY strict bioquarrantine laws in OZ
I had a bundle of ATC returns from a swap destroyed once because one of them had a twig on it. I never saw the cards, just got a terse note from customs with a "dont allow this to happen again " type letter -like it was my fault!!!
So I 'm afraid I can only receive dead/plastic /artificial/preservative-laden/irradiated type stuff...Oh..and chocolate!!!!

so chocolate covered ants are out. And meat mooncakes our out, but it does appear that chocolate is okay. I thought about reindeer/moose nuggets in the chocolate, but it soulds like the x-ray machines would spot the hidden treasures in the chocolate.

BUT --- It does sound like chocolate, artwork, (that doesn't have twigs or dried flowers)and art supplies ARE okay to send!!! What about other candy confections? Like hard candies or taffy?

So if the tea bag was individually packaged in its own sealed wrapping that is still a no huh.?.
Now it reads, no uncanned meats, so does that mean if it is canned it is okay? So canned smoked salmon might be okay? Leave it to me to push my luck. ha ha

Ooh, I love the idea of contributing to a goodie box for camcas! I will have to ponder what to include. Camcas, do you like scented lotions and such? I work for a bath & body care website and have access to lots of lovely smelling things. I like to ask first though, as some people are very sensitive to scent.

Martha sent me the most fabulous package of ATC Backgrounds that make my life so much easier when starting out new cards!

What would you all think about creating ATC backgrounds and exchanging them at the gathering?

The nice thing about creating backgrounds is you can paint or collage or ink or just cut large solid pieces down to ATC size. I've painted several large abstracts on watercolor paper and then cut them down for backgrounds and I love the results.

Here are a few of the backgrounds from that large piece and one I used for the FPAT:

Thank you all for your kind words and support, that's a good part of why I love this site so much!! To answer questions: I play competitive tennis and injured it in a match this weekend. The injury is called TFCC Triangular Fibrocartiliage Complex. I know nothing about the potential surgery yet, I've only just seen my family doc and had xrays, am now being referred to a wrist specialist in Portland (an hour away.). From what I understand at this point is that it's sorts like messing up the meniscus in the knee. The surgery could either be pins or orthoscopic if that's the direction the new doc decides will fix my wrist. Right now I'm in a brace.

Not at all! I'm so looking forward to meeting you all! I got a better brace so I might even be able to create a bit!

Ouch! Sounds really painful! I admire your spirit! Seems like everyone would perfectly understand if you canceled the event now..
Hope, you will be able just to do finger pointing, and all guests will do everything for you.. It will be interesting...
