View Full Version : In the Style of Eric Carle - Due May 1st

02-25-2008, 05:03 PM
This swap is full, but if you would like to be on a wait list, please PM me!

Sign up/Withdraw by: April 10th
DUE DATE: May 1st
Number of Cards: 3 for 3
Maximum Number of Players: 20 (5 outside the US)

Eric Carle is the children's author/artist who wrote the perpetually popular "Very Hungry Caterpiller". His artwork is a usually a carefully cut and assembled form made of painted papers. Sounds abstract? It's hard to describe succintly, so check these sites out:
The Eric Carle Site (http://www.eric-carle.com/home.html)
The Wiki Article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Carle)

Also, a Google Image search for Eric Carl will bring up a lot. Or go to your local library...and if you sign up for this swap and don't already have a pile of Carle books go and get some to browse. He's a wonderful artist.

I'll stop there and let you go on to the swap info.

If you are in this swap, please consider the following;

Due Date! Please have the cards in my mailbox by May 1st. I want to do this on time!

Some Rules

1) Send in cards that you are proud of and would like to receive - cards that you have a hard time parting with...you know what I mean.

2) There are awesome Eric Carle stickers out there. Don't use them for this! Do use colorful sticker paper, painted paper, or other media to get that special Eric Carle look. You can 'reproduce' an Eric Carle page/picture/design, or do your own design - either way (both ways?).

3) Please put your user name and the swap name on:
*the back of each and every card you send.
*the envelope that you mail to me.
*your return envelope.

4) Keep the cards light and thin to keep everyone's postage costs to a minimum! Nothing heavy or too thick. It's nice when the cards fit in sleeves. It's also nice when you put your cards in sleeves for protection.

5) Include a SASE with 58 cents in postage if you are mailing from the USA.

6) International players - I will take 5 in this swap and pay the postage for the 5 of you.

7) This is a 3 for 3 swap. Send me three cards and you will get three back. Host cards are not required, but would certainly be enjoyed.

8) I will send you my address by PM when you join.

9) I will leave you iTrader feedback as soon as I receive your cards. I hope that you will do the same for me when you receive your returns, as well as leaving reputations for the artists who made your returns. We all like to know where our babies end up!

02-25-2008, 05:29 PM
I love Eric Carle and I've been wanting to do some cards in his style. Sign me up!!

02-25-2008, 05:43 PM

02-25-2008, 06:28 PM

02-25-2008, 06:47 PM
A big Eric Carle Style welcome to catherinejo!

02-25-2008, 09:15 PM
i absolutely LOVE Eric Carle. please sign me up for this! BTW have any of you ever been to his museum? the museum of picture book art...if you are a fan and ever in Mass. you need to check it out!

02-25-2008, 09:21 PM
Hi Taylor,

I'm in! I got to hear Eric Carle speak at one of my art education conferences. He was great of course.

02-25-2008, 09:38 PM
me too, me too.

02-25-2008, 10:07 PM
i'd love to join, but i have the same question as manycolours. can we use cut paper assembly to create our own pictures or are we trying to replicate scenes from his books?

02-25-2008, 10:56 PM
oh man i LOVE LOVE ERIC CARLE!! he is so fabulous. but im already in three swaps, and thats enough for me right now.

02-25-2008, 11:45 PM
in my children's lit class we did an eric carle workshop and mine turned out wonderful. i tried to do it again at home and didn't have as much luck . . . maybe the supplies weren't exactly the same? idk . . . but i'm in a lot of swaps right now, might check back and she if there are spots left when i am closer to completing some of them, or you may just to have a round 2!

02-26-2008, 01:12 AM
Welcome and welcome again to knesi07, kbutts, stormarela, manycolours, and rocketwoman.

Answer to manycolour and rocketwoman's question - make your own images! Please be as creative as you want to be. Or remake a page, but I would rather see what you do with Carle's style, if you know what I mean.

CookieMonsHer and inkadinkadoo - maybe we will still get to see your art. You never know. You would be very welcome!

02-26-2008, 07:40 AM
May I please join? As a reading teacher, it is almost a crime if I don't!

Lise Bu
02-26-2008, 10:19 AM
May i join please - the very hungry caterpillar is my favourite book of all time. I brought my daughter up loving his stuff. I can't wait. x x x

02-26-2008, 12:17 PM
We have dragonflygal1987 and Lise Bu on board. Welcome and have fun!

02-26-2008, 02:28 PM
I would love to join in, please sign me up!
Here are my cards I made from a previous eric carle swap:

02-26-2008, 04:21 PM
cute cards on your flickr album! :)

02-26-2008, 05:28 PM
I added mynameisJenn - welcome!

02-26-2008, 07:21 PM
I would love to play, but don't want to sign up until my cards are made and in the mail. If this fills up before I'm done, is there a possibility of a second round?

The Eric Carle Museum in Springfield MA is, as knesi07 says, well worth checking out! They've even got a hands-on area, for kids (of all ages), where you can try your hand at Carle's art style! We didn't bring any actual children, but had a wonderful time anyway!

02-26-2008, 08:15 PM
I would love to see the museum. Unfortunately, the Oregon >>> Massachusetts commute is really killer. I probably won't get out there any time soon!

If the swap fills up and you have made cards, just PM me and we will see if we can work something out!

02-26-2008, 09:12 PM
I would love to join this swap. This sounds like so much fun!

02-27-2008, 12:50 AM
Oh gosh, I think I have to do this. :) Please sign me up!

02-27-2008, 09:59 AM
I have added Bunnie and HHC - let's all give them a big Eric Carle Welcome! So glad you could join us!

02-27-2008, 10:00 AM
frogwings where are you located? any possibility of doing an in-person trade?
I've been to the museum 3 times. Twice with kids, once without (to get some books signed by mr. carle). i also had breakfast with robert sabuda (pop up artist extraordinaire)! It is amazing to see the artwork that goes into all the different styles of picture books. They also offer all kinds of workshops for educators. It is a 2.5 hr ride for me, but was well worth it. go to www.picturebookart.org to check it out! ok, i'm done with my preaching! off to work.
have a great day everyone!

I have made these cards for this swap - but I would just like to check that I am on the right track. This lion and the fish are made up of layered pieces of patterned paper, I have then added detail using a fine liner. The sun is also made from pieces of yellow paper. What do people think??

1975 1977

02-27-2008, 11:48 AM

I'm a children's librarian--I SO want to join this swap!

02-29-2008, 06:57 PM
Not signing up for this swap since I got just about enough on my crafty plate already - but just wanted to say I totally love Carle's books (The very hungry catterpillar is my all time favorite!! Has been since I was a child, and now I give it to all kids I know who don't have this book yet hehe) and think this is a great idea for a swap!!

02-29-2008, 07:08 PM
Welcome to LavenderLizard. Children's librarians rock my world!

03-01-2008, 03:33 PM
Thanks! And as an aside, I spent about 8 months in Ashland on an academic exchange when I was in college--I just LOVE Eugene! It will be nice to post mail to you.

03-01-2008, 07:04 PM
Can I join?

03-01-2008, 07:24 PM
Keeping an eye on this thread; I've got to get going on these while there's still space!

YellowDen, the grassy one looks especially EricCarlesque (yes, I made up the word), with the variable greens in the grass blades; nicely done!

03-01-2008, 07:56 PM
YellowDen - those look great. I agree with frogwings that the grassy one looks like it's right out of a Carle book! I don't think you need anything else - send 'em on in!

Welcome to Skyelance and Elena! I can't wait to see what you do for this swap.

frogwings - there is only ONE space left! Do you want it?

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENT: I will be out of town today-Tuesday evening. I would say that I will miss you all, but I'm off to a hot-spring resort with my family. Lots of time for art, meditation, hot soaks, and etc. No phones, internet, dishes, cooking.... I will check back Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning. See you then!

03-01-2008, 08:35 PM
may i join?

03-01-2008, 09:34 PM
And with a big welcome to lola123, we will call this swap FULL!!!

Now, on to the artwork...:jiggy:

03-05-2008, 12:25 PM
Let me know if you have a last minute burst of creativity and we will see what we can do. I will miss having your art in this swap!

03-05-2008, 01:47 PM
It's fate. I'm in. I've been under the weather for nearly three weeks, and it's time for a change. Creativity is the cure!

03-05-2008, 03:58 PM
Yay! I'm glad you are going to play. Where are you located?

03-05-2008, 11:11 PM
I'm in Massachusetts. The wrong end of the state for the Eric Carle Museum, but it's a whole lot closer than Oregon!

03-06-2008, 06:27 PM
Bunnie, your cards came today! Wonderful work and so fast!

03-07-2008, 05:00 PM
Here are the cards I made for this swap. I spent last Saturday at "art day" and we made tons of paste paper for collaging. I used it for backgrounds and for cutting shapes for the subjects. This was probably the most fun I've had making art in a long time! It was messy and sticky and I just feel like a kid again!!! :jiggy:

03-07-2008, 05:30 PM
Those are wondeful - I can't wait to see them in person!

03-07-2008, 10:58 PM
Upwiththesun - isnt this the greatest trade ever?! I Love your cards - I think the Yellow daisy is my favorite!

03-08-2008, 12:07 PM
The yellow coneflower is my favorite too. I'm making several more like it. They (coneflowers) are abundant in the summer in Oklahoma. They are one of my favorite wildflowers!!

03-08-2008, 04:25 PM
My cards just went into the mail-lady's bag! Be looking for them next week! dawn:D

03-09-2008, 09:44 PM
my cards are going postal tomorrow am! i had such a good time making these...i could have done them all night!

03-09-2008, 09:52 PM
oh and another note...eric carle usually draws faces in his suns and moons, that's why i put them on my cards. ;)

03-09-2008, 10:50 PM
Those are awesome! I'll mark them as on their way and let you know as soon as they get here.

03-10-2008, 05:43 PM
LiseBu - your wonderful cards are here. Thanks for playing and for the extra goodies!

Take a look at these fun fabrics. I just received an email today from this quilt fabric vendor and they are just adorable.

03-22-2008, 05:45 PM
Yikes! Those are wonderful!! The dots, especially, are begging to come live with me!! This has been the best swap; it's got me painting papers like mad!!

03-22-2008, 05:52 PM
Those are so cute - they make me wish I had more time to sew!

03-26-2008, 08:35 PM

03-28-2008, 04:24 PM

lilbad - your cards got here on Saturday. Thanks for the extra!

04-10-2008, 10:43 PM
My cards are ready to go! Once I got started, I quite liked this process, and have lots of painted tissue paper left over. I'll be making more.

04-11-2008, 09:59 AM
Those are great! I'll keep my eye out for them.

04-16-2008, 09:52 AM
ANNOUNCEMENT! I will be off line for the week of April 21-29. Please bear that in mind if it looks like I haven't updated any info (received cards, etc.). And thank you for your patience!

Also, the cards are due 2 weeks from tomorrow! Wow, time flies. If you are international, they should be in the mail pretty darn soon. I can't wait to see what everyone is creating! It looks like it is going to be a really pretty table of cards.

04-16-2008, 11:06 AM
These are the two I've done so far. I will do two more tomorrow. Thanks for the reminder. Crooked House and Girl with Ball:

04-16-2008, 11:11 AM
Those are great!

04-16-2008, 12:31 PM
My cards are ready to go! Once I got started, I quite liked this process, and have lots of painted tissue paper left over. I'll be making more.

I love those. Did you start with white tissue paper? Painted with what? After a bit of further reading, I see that is what Mr. Carle does, but I'm still not sure what kind of paint.

04-16-2008, 03:53 PM
I don't like my first ones. I'm starting over. Pout :)

04-16-2008, 08:25 PM
i painted my tissue also. Eric Carle uses acrylic paints - watered down as needed to get nice easy flow across the paper. It's too bad you live so far from me. I have a great DVD you could borrow. It would never get to you in time though, to give you enough time to finish your cards.
anyway, after he pieces his collages, he adds details with color pencil or crayon (you could also use oil pastels)
hope this helps

04-16-2008, 09:21 PM
Here are the last two. Sticking the tissue paper down was no fun! What are you using for glue? Thanks for a fun swap. One of the four is a hostess gift.

04-17-2008, 07:49 PM
I received cards today from stormarela and YellowDen. Nice work folks! I feel really fortunate that I get to look at each and every card for this swap - you all are doing some amazing work. Keep it coming!!!

04-17-2008, 10:54 PM
i love the elephant card!

04-18-2008, 06:45 PM
My cards were mailed this morning. This was a lot of fun! Thanks for hosting!

04-19-2008, 01:44 PM
My cards are going in the mail today.

04-20-2008, 09:12 PM
TV Turn Off week starts tomorrow, and I will be off-line for the week. If you have any serious problems (I know the due date is soon) you can PM slrandom (I call her MOM) and she will alert me. I will give iTraders, report what cards show up, etc. on April 30th.

Hopefully a week with no computer will give me extra time for art and garden!

04-21-2008, 01:53 AM
Wow! You go girl! I'm not a TV watcher, in fact don't have one except a small 13 incher in the guest bedroom (hubby's football/basketball and occasional movie watching TV). But giving up my computer would be like taking my arm off. We can't wait to see your wonderful art and hear how you've done in your garden. Have a great week!

04-23-2008, 03:57 PM
My cards are ready to go in the mail tomorrow. Here's a sneak peak. They are all made with fabric.

My cards were sent off sometime last week! :)

04-28-2008, 09:58 AM
I'm back online. It was nice to take a little break - but I think I will do the next one when I am not hosting 2 swaps! Advance planning is the key. Anyway, I got cards from:

HHC - gorgeous work and thanks for the extra!
egod - you too - very nice art work and thanks for the extra!
mynameis Jenn - you did a wonderful job. Thank you for playing!
catherinejo (I think - are you also known as Katie Morris??) - beautiful cards. I really love the bison.
LavenderLizard - lovely artwork and thank you for the extra!

Almost all the cards are in. I can't wait to see all the returns laid out on Swap Day. It's going to be gorgeous.

I'm planning to swap and mail out on Saturday, but might not hit the post office until Tuesday since we will be going out of town on Sun/Mon.

04-28-2008, 10:14 AM
You're back online! How was your week away from tv/computer screens?

04-28-2008, 11:01 AM
Welcome back, OM!!

04-28-2008, 06:13 PM
I received cards from julietbowers today. They are so gorgeous in person! Only 5 sets to go, and then we can start the swapping...

05-02-2008, 06:50 PM
dragonflygal - your cards came today! They are beautiful. Thank you for playing.

slrandom will hand deliver hers when she comes to help me swap tomorrow morning. I can't wait to see all the cards laid out together. There has been some amazing work done in this swap!

05-02-2008, 09:28 PM
Glad my cards got to you safe and sound. Thanks so much for your understanding!

05-03-2008, 12:16 AM
Wow! I had so much fun with this trade. I have already received my cards. Thanks to julietbowers, katie morris, and stormarela. Since my daughter is the swap host, I got to help her and she gave me my cards on the spot. Lucky me. Thanks Taylor, you did a great job with this one.

05-03-2008, 09:28 AM
As slrandom has noted, the cards have been swapped and will be in today's mail. This was an amazing bunch of art. Thank you to everyone for really making some lovely cards.

And thanks to slrandom for watching my son while I did the swap. He can be hell on a project like that!

When you get your returns, please remember to let us know, and to give folks reputation points. It makes each artist feel so good!

05-03-2008, 10:18 AM
My Eric Carle cards are in my gallery. These were so fun to make - and I have a lot of the paper left over - that I will have to employ this style again!

05-06-2008, 02:16 PM
I received cards today from upwiththesun (One fish, two fish), knesi07(Goodnight Moon), and kbutts (Bug). I'm enjoying them all and will be posting rep. I noticed in the cover that Taylor attached that the head of my little girl with a ball had become detached. I am so sorry. I did not mean to mail a self-destructing card. I hope that the receiver will pardon my unsatisfactory glue job! In pieces, I'm not sure I'd recognize that it is a red (orange) haired girl with two braids or ponytails handing down. If the head were added upside down, it might look like a red-headed rabbit!LOL That might be fun too!

05-06-2008, 04:17 PM
My cards are here. Not much computer time today so I will just say thanks to all and I'll give rep points later this week!!

05-08-2008, 11:21 AM
My fantastic cards have arrived. Thank you Taylor for such a cool swap. Thanks also to Knesi07, Slrandom, and Frogwings.

05-08-2008, 07:53 PM
Received lovely cards from Bunnie, Yellowden, and Lola today. Thanks! Nice work. And thanks to OM for hosting.

05-09-2008, 08:01 PM

05-09-2008, 08:41 PM
