I hope this is considered "other mail art/art doll" lol. I have always wanted a sock monkey since I was little, and now they have REALLY cute ones like:

http://bombshellomatic.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/mvc-sockmonkey.JPG
(even though that wasn't exactly a monkey, but it is still super cute)

The point is, I was wondering if anyone knows how to make them, especially cute ones out of cuter socks than the old average red heel. I especially love paisleys, argoyles, polka dots, checkers, stripes, florals, etc. My favorite colors are any shade of blue, black and white combos, black and white combos with one additional color, such as pink, blue, yellow, maroon, etc. melon/coral, pink+brown, blue+brown, grey+blue, grey+pink, etc. I think the cutest ones have an extra piece of flair, like a hat, or scarf, or ribbons, or jewelry, buttons, hairbow, shoes, blankie, etc. anything to add that extra cute and unique touch.
I don't necessarily know of anything good I could trade for it . . . I guess I could just pay for it? I don't know. I guess I should first just see if there is anyone up for the challenge.
Thanks!

Hee-hee! Cute idea! There may be someone who would love to trade for some of your art! If my sewing machine was working and I knew how to make them I'd be up for the challenge - it's such a cute idea!

i got a two-tone Brown Sock Monkey 2 years ago from my best friend Star for Christmas...
I had asked her once where she got the pattern for it, and said she got it online-
she did it by hand, as she doesn't have a machine- so it's do-able...
this one I just googled-
but it looks about right and it has pictures with each step..
the finished size its the same as the one she gave me...

I have the old style monkey socks if anyone wants them. The directions online at supersockmonkey are the traditional ones. It's possible that I should look for the socks before posting this. On the other hand, if no one would like a pair, it would be bothersome to locate them. PM me if you'd like a pair.

Here's my pair (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=2642) of socks (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=2640), all decked (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=2641)out.
I love him a lot. I think I'm going to redo his muzzle with the raw edge tucked - but not tonight.
Thanks for the great idea, guys!

Inka-
I have a traditional sock monkey Kit that was given to me and I will NEVER make it. If you want to have it, let me know. It's got the red heel socks and instructions.

i can't believe you made one that fast bijaydi! it's cute! i tried to look at the frog link (because that is my absolute FAV animal) but i'm at work and the picture was blocked :( anyway, i guess i am just being lazy because i don't really want to make one, and cheap because i don't really want to pay $35 for one. i just thought with all the crafty people here maybe someone would have some already made, or the desire to whip one up. thanks for all the help and great ideas! maybe once i find a pair of killer socks i'll break down and get out the needle and thread! :)

I make critters out of socks (they are not monkeys, though, and tend to be out of whatever sock I can find). I encourage you to give it a shot, if you have any sewing ability at all. It is a lot of fun to do. For some creative "critter" ideas, check out the book Stupid Sock Creatures by John Murphy. I'd be glad to make you something, but mine are more freeform, and I'm not sure you'd like the result. I do have some cool multi-colored striped socks right now...

quite a while ago i took part in a sock monkey swap on livejournal. it was AWESOME -- i made a cat-monkey, actually, and in return i got a super-cool devilmonkey with shaggy red fur and a collar with skulls on it. would anyone be interested in some sort of sock monkey swap?

I've made the traditional sock monkeys before. I love them. And here is one I saw the other day...sock monkey slippers!!! I don't know exactly how they are made, but they sure are cute!

Great links! I received a sock puppet kit for Christmas - perhaps you've inspired me to break it out and give it a try! I have loads and loads of socks - - funny how the dryer always eats one....
