View Full Version : Any interest in an "all types of birds" a-thon?

10-13-2010, 01:09 AM
During the September Crow/Raven/Blackbird a-thon, we discussed briefly holding an "all types of birds" a-thon during the USA Thanksgiving weekend, November 26 - 28. (any type of bird you want to create in any form of medi

I'm just wondering how many are interested and if we should pursue... :D

Poll is attached. Feel free to leave your comments as well.

I think it would be fun to have a weekend focused on bird art of some type. Not just Turkeys. LOL! There are a lot of birds who show up in our yard during the fall & winter. Imagine the possibilities!

But that's just my opinion. :)

I'm so there!

woohoo! I got the poll to attach.

And yay Rogue Gal! I love your bird art! :D

Right back atcha, Helen!

10-13-2010, 06:01 AM
Sure, it's all I'm drawing atm anyhow!

10-13-2010, 07:33 AM
If we don't go anywhere for Thanksgiving, then I can participate. So I'm definitely interested in the theme, but just not sure if I will be able to get anything done.

10-13-2010, 07:40 AM
I think I could manage a bird a thon that weekend. I will pencil it in to keep it in mind

10-13-2010, 01:26 PM
We don't have a special weekend then but sure I can play :).

10-13-2010, 05:45 PM
Sounds like a great idea but with the holiday and hubby's birthday I'm not sure I could play - if I can jump in I will.

10-13-2010, 07:07 PM
I think I can play, no plans.

10-13-2010, 07:08 PM
I'll probably have to work most of the weekend (retail doesn't get the weekend off) but I should be able to squeeze a bit of art in too. :)

10-14-2010, 12:19 AM
you bet... got things going on the big turkey weekend but sure why not...
might not be many but numbers ain't what we play for anyway.... is it ??

and this is for any birdy kind ??? not just crows or ravens... even a turkey (with feathers)

10-14-2010, 12:32 AM
I'm catering Thanksgiving dinner for my neighbor, plus making turkey dinner at home, so If possible, can we make the birds ahead of time? Or do we have to make them during the 26th-28th?? I could make mine before the holiday and post them during the "a-thon". If this is OK, I'm so in!!

10-14-2010, 10:38 AM
smokeysmom, I totally understand the time crunch. I am making a turkey dinner and working most of the weekend as well. The a-thon starts Friday after I've cleared it all up and I'll have turkey left overs so won't need to do much cooking the rest of the weekend! LOL!

You may prep before the a-thon starts (I usually get backgrounds ready and get some of the images I want to work with ready and occasionally even figure out a rough idea of a layout ahead of time) but the cards should actually be made during the a-thon.

Since it starts on Friday I do hope you can find a bit of time to play.

10-14-2010, 11:27 PM
Nice idea...I should be able to play a little!

Cat's Cradle
10-14-2010, 11:49 PM
I can probably squeak out a bird or two that weekend.

10-15-2010, 10:27 AM
I'll try but DH is off that weekend and I rarely get any art done when he's at home!!!

10-15-2010, 11:01 AM
Yes, I will do this..It will be my first a-thon....I have a big baggie of bird pictures that I have been clipping for 2 years and am so ready. Hopefully if will take take my focus off
eating all weekend and I will not gain my usual 2-3 Thanksgiving pounds.

10-15-2010, 12:11 PM
When this is decided to have, I recommend on to put the dates in the Calendar of Scheduled Media-A-Thons because there are going to be so many a-thons now and someone can arrange one at the same time. We don't want to have a competition between two a-thons, right?

10-15-2010, 08:52 PM
Is someone planning another one this weekend? :err:

10-15-2010, 10:49 PM
I'm so there!

10-15-2010, 10:54 PM
So I have it on the calendar... or it will be shortly. So I guess I'm hosting a All Types of Bird a-thon November 26 - 28. We'll go from midnight Friday to Sunday. ;)

this is sure gonna be 'for the birds' and that is a tweety great idea... marked my calendar..

10-16-2010, 03:32 AM
Helen, there was a zentangle-a-thon poll for the same days. But now you were faster :).

10-16-2010, 09:13 AM
There could actually be two a-thons in one weekend. Imagine a bird zentangle... hmmm. ;)

10-16-2010, 11:00 AM
I think I need AAA A-thon Addicts Anonymous!! LOL:eek::twitcy:

10-16-2010, 11:50 PM
Oh dear! I think I'm with you RobbyGirl! ;)

10-17-2010, 01:20 AM
Of course I will plan on it. Never know how my time is gonna be spent, but I always try to fit in time for these!

10-23-2010, 12:46 PM
Sounds wonderful!

10-23-2010, 01:19 PM
If I'm not swamped with packing I will plan on attending!

10-23-2010, 11:44 PM
AKmamaof2, when will you be moving?

10-24-2010, 09:30 AM
Are you moving from AK, AKmamaof2???

10-24-2010, 10:09 AM
Yes ladies!!! We are leaving Alaska and moving to Arizona!!

I've lived here a total of about 27 + years, and my husband about the same. We figure since most Alaskan's head south to AZ for the winters when they retire, we might as well move there now, and that way we will already be there when it's time to retire. :-)

My hubby already gave his two week notice and will start the new job in about three weeks. The kids and I will probably stay here until our house sells, and we find one down there. I'm hoping we are out of here before Christmas, but it might be after. Don't really know when we will ALL be moved down there.

The company will only ship our vehicles as far as Seattle. So we will drive from there to AZ when the time comes. Which I'm fine with, because driving the Alcan Hwy. through Canada in the dead of winter is NO FUN at all!!!

10-24-2010, 11:44 AM
WOW! THAT's a change!!!! When you move to Arizona you will only need to change one letter (R) in your handle: ARmamaof2! ;) Yeah, I've heard that the Alcan Hwy is no picnic in the dead of winter. It can be dicey any time though if you're not prepared. Good luck with the packing. What a chore! But think of the end of the road and all that sunshine. This is the best time of year to move to AZ. It's no fun to be unloading heavy boxes in mid-summer! :swoon:

10-24-2010, 12:41 PM
I will be keeping my UserID the same, as I have too many things associated with it.
We will have a moving company do all the packing and unloading, so that shouldn't be too much of a pain. But moving in the winter in Alaska is no picnic either. Fortunately, we don't have snow on the ground yet, so that helps. It's creeping down the Mountain very quickly though.

10-24-2010, 02:53 PM
Heeding HHC's advice, I'M SO HERE NOV. 26-28TH!!! I love making fanciful and funky birds! You hear that Ducky? I'm gonna do it! I've marked my calendar:)

10-24-2010, 05:02 PM
It's looking like we'll have a fun gathering for the weekend!

10-24-2010, 10:20 PM
Ya know, "birds that flock together....."

10-25-2010, 12:33 AM

10-30-2010, 09:03 PM
I love the idea of a bird-a-thon! I'll try to keep my diary clear.

10-31-2010, 10:46 PM
I don't know where I will be that weekend, but if I have the chance I'll be playing, too!

10-31-2010, 11:22 PM
I would love to play but I am not sure exactly how ...Will try to find "Athon" directions. If anyone would like to participate in a help a newb "athon" write me a pm explaining where I can get the 411.

11-01-2010, 11:34 AM
standnngrace, there isn't an a-thon how to... but I think I'll see if I can get one posted.

What we do is create art during the time frame of the weekend, post to the thread, pm each other for trades, chat, admire art, have a great time!
You can prep backgrounds and cut out images (if you collage) and gather supplies ahead of time but all art posted to the thread should be made during the weekend. There are usually instructions in the beginning post of the a-thon thread, which pretty much tells you what to do. Hope that helps!

11-01-2010, 11:53 AM
Thank you ! I am syked this will be great fun! I love birds!

11-08-2010, 02:31 PM
Looks like I'm going to miss out on this one and I saw love Bird atcs but we decided on an impromptu Disneyland Thanksgiving weekend for our Lil dude since he's been through so much lately with the surgery. Have fun! I'll at least make some bird Atcs before hand in case anybody has anything left to trade and maybe I can make some during the down time at disney and post them from my iphone!

Hummmm...got a live trade meet on NOV 21st (gotta make cards...gotta make cards...) and got another live trade meet on NOV 29th (gotta make more cards... gotta make more cards...)...but what the heck...birds are chirping and I'm getting drawn in! I'll make some bird cards that week-end...This will be my 2nd A-thon! The first one was so much fun but I needed a lot of rest afterwards....the pace I did was too fast (I was too greedy and I wanted all of those cards and kept soliciting trades! So it was my own fault!).
I will take it easy this time and have fun! Looking forward to flocking together!

Hope this happens I have never been in a athon before. Has it been decided then?

The a-thon WILL be happening November 26 - 28. We'll start a new thread for it a few days ahead of time and post that link here so you can find us. :)

11-11-2010, 12:53 PM
I have found a few vintage bird advertisement trading cards I'll be using during the a-thon. I'm scanning them so I can keep the real things.

11-11-2010, 01:05 PM
My husband is away that weekend and my novel should be finished so I shall be illustrating it.

Get your guests involved for an afternoon activity - especially if the weather keeps you indoors!

11-17-2010, 11:54 AM
standnngrace, I hope you find just a tiny bit of time to be creative! and what a great idea, alanabannana, getting the whole houseful busy creating!

I get to work Friday and Saturday, but do have Sunday off so that's when I'll be fitting in my major making-birds time. I am prepping backgrounds and getting some images clipped and ready so hopefully that will help when I have a few minutes to spare that weekend. :)

11-18-2010, 01:20 PM
Oh, I was too enthousiast! I thought the bird-a-ton would start tomorrow and was already cutting out birds! Now I see it's still a week to go!

11-18-2010, 01:37 PM
Well darn! It's almost there. Less than a week to go!

What if we start it on Thursday, November 25... It's Thanksgiving Day in the USA, but only the USA, and it's also the only day a few of us have for the weekend. Any interest in that, folks?

Rogue Gal
11-18-2010, 02:44 PM

How about Bird chunky book pages? Here:

11-19-2010, 04:40 AM
Hi Sanna, thanks for the link! Perhaps I could make some bird chunkies for this weekend!

11-19-2010, 04:55 AM
At least I would be happy to trade them with you :).

11-19-2010, 06:26 AM
Hi Senna, I just uploaded two 4x4's in my mail art gallery. Let me know if you like any of them :)

11-19-2010, 06:29 AM
I sure want to trade!

11-19-2010, 06:41 AM
I've got the 26th off from work now, so hopefully I can remember to create some birdie art! Will we be running on whatever time zone we live in or do I have to wait for USA time?

11-19-2010, 06:44 AM
All starting and ending times given in the thread are in your own time zone. That way we all have the same number of hours to use and no one needs to craft during the night if doesn't want to do it.

11-19-2010, 11:19 AM
Tinka those are great chunkies! I forgot there was a Chunky a-thon going on this weekend. Thanks for the link, Sanna!

11-21-2010, 11:35 AM
Our daughter will be home this wknd but maybe I can get a few birdie cards done and play along too!! Will mentally pencil this in!! (LOL)

11-21-2010, 12:11 PM
This should be a fun weekend. My plan is to get the official thread up tomorrow when I'm off work.

We're starting on Thursday November 25 at 12:01am and going through Sunday November 28 at the stroke of midnight.

Just Ducky
11-22-2010, 01:01 AM
thursday midnight ???????????? oh bummer... was hoping for start on Thursday day...
like while the turkey is cookin' ? and after the big, too big dinner... if I can't make art
I will fall asleep on the couch .. I vote for all day Thursday..........

11-22-2010, 01:03 AM
OKAY... REWIND! We start at 12:01am Thursday morning! So while we're waiting for the turkey to cook, we can play with our art supplies. Unless family wants attention, of course!

11-22-2010, 01:08 AM
And on a totally aside note, my weekend is now free. I can create art the whole time. I'm most pleased with the turn of events. :D

Just Ducky
11-22-2010, 01:09 AM
good-ie.... thanks Helen... now since I forgot that this is THIS Thursday I thinking I better
go buy a bird to cook and find some birds to glue....

boy, I got lots of preping to do... better go to bed NOW... nite ......

and wow... Helen you got the whole weekend off ?????? super... what did you do... send that manager over to Australia ??

11-22-2010, 01:30 AM
LOL! Just Ducky, she let me go this afternoon near the end of my shift. I have outlived my usefulness at her store. sigh.... thus, I have a bit of time on my hands. yay!

11-22-2010, 01:31 AM
i either have to wait til thankgiving dinner is over to start or make everyone eat off their laps cause the table is my work space! hmmmm....

11-22-2010, 01:47 AM
What an excellent attitude you have, Helen! I think that is just awesome!

Is it considered cheating if I make up a few ahead of time or at least do the backgrounds for them?? OH, and these are ATC's, right?

if I can't make art I will fall asleep on the couch ..

LOL Ducky!! My thoughts exactly!

11-22-2010, 11:01 AM
TimeInMyHands, you can make backgrounds ahead of time, and do all sorts of prepping, but all art posted in the thread should be made during the a-thon.

And it can be any type of art, ATCs, chunky pages, arches, inchies......

11-22-2010, 04:20 PM
OoOO Awesome!! All kinds of ideas swirling around in my widdle head! LOL!
Thank you!

11-22-2010, 04:55 PM
