Welcome guys....I am about to fall asleep and really tired so I will get the travel plan loaded tomorrow. I also still need addresses, phone numbers. I will make a list when I have all the info and send it to you in private message.
Annette

To help with the "FEAR" factor I would like to request that at least once a week - lets say Sunday or Monday of each week that we all just drop a note in the thread....I'm alive, all is well, life sucks, off to join the circus (pictures required if this is true) - just something to let everyone know that all is okay and on track and PLEASE PLEASE if you are having problems please let us know. THANK YOU......DADA

I'm really excited about this! This is my first journal exchange.

I'd like to propose this as my theme. If this isn't ok for a journal exchange, let me know and I can tinker.

Theme: Great Books
For the journal page, any interpretation of the theme of "great books". This could be a depiction of scenes or characters from great books, authors, or people engaging with great books in some way. I'd like to see some creative approaches too - maybe a battle of the books (think classics vs. moderns, "serious lit" vs. "popular lit"), weird juxtapositions of book characters and plots, etc.

I would like artists' works to overlap and/or bleed over. I’d prefer a significant amount of hand drawn/painted art from each artist, but I don't have a problem with with mixed media or collage (and this theme seems like it could lend itself to some cool collage work). I'd also appreciate text incorporated into the image.

My moley theme is going to be based on Poe's poem The Raven. I would like the color scheme to be gray scale (anything from black to gray so light it looks white) plus the color red (crimson/blood red). I was thinking about dividing up the poem per player but I think I will leave it up to each artist to do what she/he wants using ravens, Poe, or lines from the poem in any medium. Here's a link to the poem on Project Gutenburg: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/14082.

Hi everyone! I have been off the site for a while [working on some big paintings], but I am so excited to be in this swap...first moley for me, and the first time I have worked in the folding type moleskine...it arrived yesterday, and I am a bit nervous about the whole thing!
I will give each of your themes my best shot, however! Looking forward to it, and still contemplating my theme...all of yours sound so very cool.

I have been checking out some moleys online, and was BLOWN AWAY by some of the art!
Anyway, I am still ruminating on a theme, but here is what I have so far...I would welcome some thoughts/feedback from others..."Altered Ancestors" will be the working title...everyone in the group comes up with their very own fantasy ancestor, and illustrates/arts it however they choose...I am thinking that I am descended from a mermaid perhaps...I swim every day and am most happy in/near the water; but then again, I may have had a druid in my lineage, as most of my big paintings are trees!
Who knows what lurks in YOUR family tree? Wizards, magicians, gypsys, accountants??
Anyway, let me know what y'all [I am in South Carolina] think!

Okay everybody...just relax! I have a great feeling about this group...all wonderful artists, and I know you can make up some ultra-cool, funky, serious, funny, or seriously funny ancestors...some hints might be to make your "altered ancestor" belong to you in some way...maybe have given you a unique talent or have influenced your likes, dislikes, abilities in some way [like my mermaid thing with the swimming/love of water]...just let yourself go crazy and have fun...that's what this group/site is all about after all! By the way, they can be human/animal or magical...I just heard on Animal Planet [I watch this instead of the news...much better for my blood pressure] that we share 98% of our DNA with orangutangs [sp?]...spooky, huh?

Ok, I've been picking away at this for the past couple of weeks, and I'm pretty happy with it. This is the front two pages (including the swap order) and the first three pages (page one is some of the advocates of "great books" readings, pages two and three are a take on the opening cantos of Dante's Inferno). I hope I have the order of the swap right (shoulda checked on that before I committed pen to paper).

This is journal swap is going to be a lot of fun, I can tell already.

Sorry for being really late. I was in the middle of a remodeling project.
Title is SKI: Spy Killers Inc.
I downloaded a picture, it pretty much describes and shows what is going on. The story is that SKI is in the spy killing business. They are called "Interceptors".
Notice the aliens are not green. Feel free to draw or collage. Try to keep the characters the same clothing, color, etc...but in your own style...I don't have the resources that some do to hire a hit squad...so if you get side tracked and do your own thing, chances are really good that you will not have an assassin come to your house.
I am excited as this is my first moley.
If you want to do it on the computer and print it out and paste it in go ahead.

Two main spy killers...I will post their names later.
Thanks look forward to your works.

I hate to be stupid, but if I don't ask, I'll just stay that way...this is my first time using the accordian-fold Japanese moleskine, and I'm having trouble working on it without bending pages, or having to keep turning it around...maybe it's just me, but I don't know why everyone likes these things! I have to keep putting something under it to keep it level, ect.
What am I doing wrong?

kristinized
12-20-2010, 07:19 PM
You're not being stupid Terry, I have the same problem. In fact, I was even thinking of detaching the whole folding part so it would be easier to decorate, but thought that might make the pages get separated and lost.

It does take manuvering to get the thing folded out enough so that you can work it, plus you also have to be careful not to get smudges/paints/glues on the pages after yours.

joes lines
12-20-2010, 07:51 PM
I had lots of problems too (including a tiny tear on one of the pages that the next person in my rotation gets). I also found that working around the creases in the accordian folded paper presented problems. I think/hope it's just a matter of getting used to the format.

I did my own pages right in the journal, but I am thinking about doing my layouts for other journals on an accordian-folded sheet of 14"X5 1/2" watercolor paper, which I will then just paste into the journal over my assigned pages. Partially this is because I use inktense pencils and watercolor pencils a lot, and am not sure how well the moley paper will hold up. Is that ok?

DADAology
12-21-2010, 01:42 PM
Hey you guys this is my first one too. I imagine we will all learn through the whole process. For my first two intro pages i actually drew and painted on newsprint and pasted in. I had done my 3 pages and colored with copic markers and they bleed through a lot and there was no way I could create anything on that one page.

From reading other post, I think a lot of people have done the work and pasted in. Any of you that have done one before we need your insight through our process.....

After doing the 3 sheet spread I found I didn't like it so I will redo those pages....and use the other one for something else.....this one has to work I only had two.....

Something I did forget and am improvising somewhat, I forgot to allow for a sign in page for my artist......so I will make little individual cards for you to sign and attach when my book gets home. I saw that on one of the other swaps.

George emailed me the other day and said he will be out of the country and his mail date will be around the 6th of Jan so Joe don't panic....if you get concerned you might send him a note so he can contact you when to look for it. If at anytime anyone is going to be late, please let your next in line to know.....

I haven't used gesso or pasted any pages of the books I've worked on before, I used mostly prisma markers and they do show on the opposite side of the page but no one sees or uses that side so it doesn't matter. And if corners bend a bit or art material gets on the next blank page I've just worked over it. I think all those little dings and things add to the finished book - it shows the book has been around! :)

I don't plan on pasting any pages in, but I think this kind of thing is pretty much whatever you want to do. Sometimes books can take a long time in the mail, and you can save time by creating your pages on different paper then pasting them in when the journal finally arrives.

terryart
12-21-2010, 08:22 PM
Thanks for all the feedback, moley friends! I feel better [less stupid] now...and that's a good thing. I work mostly in watercolor, and I would really be happy to work on my arches paper, and then paste it in the journal if no one has a problem with that. I am still trying to maneuver the folded pages, but it is making me nuts! I'm glad I'm working on my book and not someone else's...I am going to check the forums for more specific help...does the travel page go in the back on the pocket or up front?

No worries! My travel page IS the second page...I have no idea if this is right or wrong, but I suspect we should quit worrying about the right/wrong thing or we are going to lose the fun of the project...hey, we can always get it "right" on the next exchange!
I am almost finished with my pages [I truly hope that is supposed to be the next 3 pages]...let me know about that because I am now at the point that I could go to the 4th page if needed...oh yes...Merry Day After Christmas to all fellow Moley People!

Same here, cut paste, markers, paint...doesn't matter to me. You guys are great artists do what you do best. That's one reason I joined.
I agree with you guys, there shouldn't be a right or a wrong. Some of the stuff I did that I screwed up on everyone seems to like. It is like accidentally experimenting.

I know these books will be awesome, no other way they could turn out. and Yes the first two and the next 3 fold out we do. At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Hey gang,

George here. I will mail my thing before I disappear beyond the blue yonder so there is no need to panic, as Annette said. Time to panic will be in May. We will be out there with my better half fighting mediocrity in Europe, visiting our mothers in Prague, drinking the real Budweiser from Budweis, and taking a Greek cruise (hopefully). All of this will take more than a month, almost two if we go with my wife's schedule. I will also be away for couple (2 or 3) of weeks in July and/or maybe the beginning of August depending on when my son's new baby decides to come and see the world. So that will be the other time to panic. I will not scare you guys by telling you that I will also be away for a week in February because that may not happen. Other than that we are good!

nanner
12-29-2010, 06:44 PM
George, if the suitcase to Europe feels heavy, never mind it...that's just me stowing away!

Fabulous pages so far, peeps. I have been working on mine, painfully aware of how FAST these monthly deadlines will be creeping up on us! :twitcy:

gkovats
12-29-2010, 06:45 PM
And now the serious stuff. We have a mystery on our hands. Since I did not get a satisfactory answer to my earlier private query, I'm going public: There ain't enough pages for 8 people to do 4 pages each!!! Panic now! Either I'm totally out of it, which may be possible, or the last person will only have 2 pages. Tell me where I went wrong: There are 30 pages in the notebook. This is an incontrovertible fact as evidenced by the description of the notebook wrapper and in sales materials and confirmed by my personal count of the pages. Since I'm an engineer by profession I believe I'm qualified to count to 30 and also do simple addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Here is the simple multiplication: 7 participants other than yourself times 4 pages each equals 28. Are you with me? So far so good. Next: 30 pages minus 28 equals 2 pages left for the owner of the notepad (or is it a sketchbook?). We are supposed to put our name and travel plan on page 1 and create on 3 pages. Therefore 1 + 3 = 4!! But only 2 pages are available. OK, people who can solve this mystery? I know I screwed up somewhere but I'll be if I know where.

Could be that we are supposed to use the first leaf where is says "If lost this is the reward........." in addition to the 30 pages.

Any thoughts on this out there? Do I have to scrape that egg off my face?

I've done my thing so it's too late for thoughts contrary to mine.....just wanna let you know.

George

By the way, I feel naked having defined my theme with 2 words while everyone else wrote a dissertation work on their themes. So here is more details so nobody can complain about my theme.

Nostalgia to me means anything older than 50 years. It can be anything at all older than 50 years.

Steampunk to me means Victorian science-fiction such as that authored by Jules Verne. In my mind I also include turn of the century stuff such as the first cars, airplanes etc. up to WW I.

Bleed or overlay or whatchumacallit is OK and is encouraged.

Any fine art technique and media are acceptable including collage and limited stamping.

That's it folks.

nanner
12-29-2010, 06:59 PM
I had to count my moleskin pages out several times to check the math. Prolly different books have different page counts, I suspect.

I needed to use the "in case lost" page to make the count come out right.

My two cents (worth a hill of beans, so I will defer to our lovely hostess) would be...if you HAVE completed your pages, leaving the final artist 2 pages at the end...maybe the final two artists can just do 3 pages in your book (if you feel that's fair)? If you HAVEN'T completed your pages, I'd just short yourself enough to make up the difference so that all of us each have 4 pages.

It's YOUR book, George. So if you have to tweak it here and there...that's what I believe we all can/should do to make this the lifetime keepsake we want to create for ourselves. There aren't hard/fast rules. I'm on board with whatever you decide to do.

Same goes for all you lovely arteeests. Use your best judgment and I'll do the same when your book is in my hot little hands. :wubclub:

All that said, I think I'm going to re-count my pages out for the 197th time! :twitcy:

nanner
12-29-2010, 07:02 PM

I used the back side of the leaf as one page and used the next two on the fold out. I am thinking if we run out of paper just glue a couple or two sheets on to the end.

George, mine comes to you first. Do you want me hold on to it until you get back or send it to the next in line? And later come back to you?

Good thoughts but they are all inconsequential as I have finished my stuff. Having been a magician long time ago came handy as I have pulled the proverbial rabbit out of my tophat and arranged my stuff so that Bob will have 3 pages. Never mind the fact that I have read the instructions after I have done 2 pages and therefore discovered the mystery of 30 pages too late. Hey, this is a great title for a detective story. Hey Bob, you can go overleaf if you want.

Hello SilverScream, you can hit me any time for a trade. Contrary to popular belief, I'm not going to Europe now, I'll be traveling just locally, meaning in USA. I may have made some wild statements to Annette but the truth is I'm staying here. I'll be in Eurpe in May as I wrote above.

Ooops, now I see it's SilverSeam.....sowwy.

oh! you bad girl! I thought a person was only allowed to participate in one journal swap at a time... oh well. Too late now :)

While I never mind being called a bad girl (;)), your post spurred me to check the rules:

Limited sign ups for first-time participants. Individuals new to circle journals and book journal swaps at ATCsforALL.com can only sign up for one journal group initially. After the successful completion of their group, they are welcome to sign up for multiple groups but must check with a Moderator before signing up for more than three (3).

These ain't my first moley rodeos, SilverSeam...so all is well. :)

Hey everyone...I feel as if I've just emerged from a fog or something....didn't realize it had been so long since I last was here....so much going on. OOPS George I really thought you were going to be out of the country....but then the "blonde" does have a tendency to be in control at times, even if it is a bottle job,,,,,Terry your pages are amazing....
I took pictures of mine too, would not even try the scan thing....otherwise you guys would be receiving my disemboweled book in baggies...."*note to self: puzzle piece book"
Pages - when I expand my book all the way out my first page is on the back of the only "Page" in the book, my next two pages are the first two of the actual folding pages. From there, there are exactly 4 pages each for 7 players. Does that make sense?

Here are my pages. I also created mini postcards for each of you. Choose the one you like and put your artist info on the back or what ever else you want. I will clip them together upon return and attach to the book. When you return them to the back pocket you will have to juggle them around a little bit so the book will close. I had to put four up and four down and then stager so the eyelets where not stacked on top of each other.

(I'm post-stalking nanner... and I thought I'd throw in my un-asked-for advice about scanning moleys.. I've done a crapload of moleys here and at the other site, and the only way I've had ANY luck with scanning is to leave the lid open, close my eyes, and hold the pages flat with my fingers until the scanning is done. Nothing else really works)

From the "not enough to do over the holiday weekend file"...
I worked on George's Steampunk/Nostalgia journal this weekend. I have to confess that I started on this once I saw the topic a couple of weeks ago. George's first page (depicting his hometown) is at the far left and blends into the Prince Albert Machine.

Thanks everyone. The pedantic history lesson part:

Victoria's husband, Prince Albert (full name Francis Albert Augustus Charles Emmanuel, Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha -- how cool is that?), died in 1861. She spent the rest of her life (until 1901) in perpetual mourning. I figured it would be in character for Victoria to turn the entire technical expertise of the empire into resurrecting the dead consort, even if only for a few moments. Which, incidentally, also combines the theme of nostalgia and steampunk. Ta-dum.

There's a prototype Tesla coil in there, which is technically too early by about a decade, and a Babbage difference engine. I'm reading William Gibson and Bruce Sterling's The Difference Engine right now; it definitely got me in the steampunk mood.

Included a transparency between cutouts in one page to stand for the spraypaint dripping beside our tags, AND the ambiguous red coming from Baker's forehead. Blank areas and covers TBD (as I'll "tie up the loose ends" based on all of you lovely arteests' additions.)

Wow, I'm glad the case of the missing moley got resolved; that's the one thing that worries me about the journal exchanges, but I will learn to embrace the chaos!

I've been working on a signature card to include with each set of pages I do, and this is what I think I'm going with. This is a block print stylized self portrait, which I'll tailor to the theme of the specific pages. So this is the one for George's Steampunk/Nostalgia set.

I'm pretty much done with George's layout. So, is it ok to send it on its merry way, or would it be better to wait until closer to February?

DADAology
01-13-2011, 10:51 PM

I saw THIS STORY (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110119/ap_on_en_ot/us_poe_mystery_visitor_7) story today and thought about Kristin's Poe theme. I visited the Poe house in Philadelphia maybe ten years ago (it's run by the National Park Service); my recollection is that the house was completely empty - not a stick of furniture, wall hangings, nothing - but the NPS had hidden a bloody plastic heart under a floorboard to keep the kids entertained. I also remember that the rangers warned us that if we didn't park directly in front of the museum, we had a 50/50 shot of having our car stolen.

I'm playing catch up today, it was sad the Poe Toaster didn't show up. The last time he came was for Poe's 100th birthday so I guess that was a big milestone, although I think it's cool that 4 different people came to continue the tradition. They need to get their schedules straight next year though! ;)

Your story about visiting the Poe house reminds me of my visit to Scott Joplin's museum in St. Louis. We parked outside, tried to enter but the door was locked. Two docents opened the door and let us in, then locked the door and gave the tour! It didn't say much for the neighborhood!

And cool layout nanner! I'm still working on my pages but they're my project for today so I hope to get most of it done.

Nothing changed I just lined it down instead of across. the other way everytime I tried to make changes there were all the computer language and I couldn't tell what I was doing. If I added bold, color, etc it would be something like this: {COLOR="blue"}{SIZE="5"}{U}{COLOR="Blue"}{U}{B}PARTICIPANTS and THEMES{/B}{/U}{/COLOR}:{/U}{/SIZE}{/COLOR} and it continued to add each time I added or changed something. I couldn't tell what I was doing. If you prefer I will change it back.

love love love your entry Genxster!!! I agree, everyone's pages have been phenomenal. Some themes are challenging for me, but that's ok and it's fun to be challenged. :)

I took advantage of the snow day and finished up the art for Bob's moley today. I cheated big time and got started on this in early January. The inspiration was a Marx Brothers marathon on one of the cable channels. Some of the quotes are lines from Duck Soup.

haha, great inspiration there Joe! that will be a fun book to see.

to help keep on track. No matter who's book we currently have we are "legally" working on our 2nd artist spread. Which is Feb's artist. i know we are a bit out of sink and some have written asking where are we?? Each of us should be working on our 2nd book. We need to be carefull getting too far ahead so that we don't get confused and heaven forbid loss track of a book. I'm through with my 2nd book but will wait toward the end of the month to mail. If we find that all of us collectivly are finishing early we could up the mail date and allow only two weeks, but we all need to agree on that. Other wise it will get to be a mess.

I work so slowly, figuring out the idea and the execution takes a long time for me. I really need the full time to make the best possible pages.

If other people want to finish and send early, that's cool. I don't have any trouble with a stack of moleys on my desk. :D

It's fine with me if someone finishes a book early and wants to mail it on to the next person (as long as that player is ok with having 2 books on hand). I'd rather not shorten the deadline to 2 weeks though 'cause I think I would fall behind.

I think we should be fine as long as we post updates on sending and receiving books.

02-07-2011, 04:19 PM
Yeah, I'm in agreement with the sentiments above; I think the one month deadline is fine, but if people finish early or want to work ahead I don't see it as a problem as long as people update the location of the moleys either in the thread or in a pm. I also don't have any problem at all with getting moleys early.

I do have Bob's right now and am still tinkering with it.

I just learned from the pages of this molley that Joe got Bob's book in one day. Something's really fishy. I did not know that our esteemed Post Office works Sundays. I mailed it Saturday around noon. Either they want to really deserve the next postage rate increase or the Martians hijacked the Post Office and are working wonders. Which one is it?

Martians would explain the crop circle in the front yard.

Now, puzzle this out: On the day that Bob's magic moley arrived in western New York from Colorado in record speed, I also got a water bill from the town that I live in. The USPS postmark on that piece of mail was more than two weeks old.

People, people, once again we have the "Martian Problem" on our hands. Only this time it is the "Reverse Martian" variation. As of February 14 I have no book to work on and as far as I can see from here (8,300 ft. above mean sea level), and I can see Kansas on a beautiful day like today, the book is not on the way. Anyone who still has a semblance of influence over the Martians should try talking to them to see what seems to be the prob.

Oh, Kriiiiisteeeeen! I LOVED your theme. Here's a peek at your moley.

I took some creative liberties with the symbolism in the poem, which is a story about lost love more-so than a noisy black bird.

I "borrowed" genxter's poe to call out to the sound at his door. After all the rapping and tapping, the shutter actually opens to reveal his lost love Lenore, who has taken on a deathly raven form. She confirms that she is indeed gone with a mouthful of "Nevermore". On the backside, the bust of Pallas that the bird perches upon has been morphed into a bust of the raven himself.

Awwww, BOB! I love it. Thank you!

I got a whole new dose of graffiti inspiration in Boston's Contemporary Art Museum last night. A wall of a dozen or more Shepard Fairey prints. And the featured artist was a guy who made HUGE gallery-wall sized mixed media pieces from old billboards in LA. So cool.

Though, a funny sidenote: I'm standing in front of this hodge podge piece of billboard, gel medium, paint, fibers and funk...and as I go to jot a note in my journal, I get reprimanded because I'm using a pen and not a pencil. In case I had an "ink incident", in front of one of the most splattered art pieces I've stood beside. :biglaugh: It was pretty funny.

Ha, 'tis the season for travel plans. I just found out I'm going to be out of the country for all of July and the first half of August. It seems like the easiest solution would be for Bob to mail me TerryArt, Nanner and Genxster's books in April, May and June; I could then hold them and send them as a packet to George before I leave.

I think unless the travel plan gets altered there will be a problem - between George and me, we have the potential to gum up the works from April through August (ugh.).

I promise I'll bring souvenirs back from merry olde England for all the people whose moleys get held up by me.

Life happens, right? Hey Joe, I need your address - george.kovats@gmail.com. My computer crashed and almost at the same time my flash drive decided to wipe itself clean as it was sitting on my WOODEN desk, so I lost most of my data. Some of my data were on a different flash drive. How likely is this to happen? Not very but when it does it is a disaster of epic proportions.......WARNING to all of those who are willing to listen to George: Never use flash drives!!!! I was told by the local computer expert that flash drives will lose whatever is on them, it is just a matter of time. They are intended to be used to carry data between computers and not for permanent retention. FOR PERMANENT STORAGE USE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or offsite back-up. I tossed all of my (4) flash drives and I'm using a small (320 Gb) external hard drive now.

Have fun while I'm gone! Leaving in two and a half weeks!

Anyway, I received book from Bob Florence in the mail the other day. Did not open it yet. Also, I'm nearly done with Dada's book so I will be in a position to mail it to Joe very very soon. Maybe even as early as next Tuesday.

OUCH! That hurts. I have and have had an external for several years for my personal info. I had a flash delete all my work files a few years ago and it was pretty awful. I had huge spread sheets on it, but after several days was able to use the files I had on my computer to reproduce something similar. There was no warning, just put it in one morning and it was gone.

No worry about the poll, it was more for you guys than for me. I'm easy and will go with the flow.

I need to get started on Genxsters book. I have it 90% done but on newsprint that I will glue to here pages, just need to set down and get it done.

Hi Dada,

I wouldn't look forward to what I have done in your book simply because Zombies are not my forte. I send the book to Joe today!!!!

It was your poll so you can go with the flow but I like order so it is a good thing I don't have any polls out there.

The darned flash drive had about 1200 of my ATCs on it (the other 1100 are on a hard drive) and some correspondence which I really don't need. Then there was an address book, I can recreate that, over 500 of my chess games and about 300 of correspondence chess games and three stormwater management reports and most importantly......Chapter 1 of my book.

Such is life. Now, what do you want to do about my absence?
