Thursday is quickly approaching! Let's get some chatter going and get psyched up for some awesome Zentangling!

First things first. Links for info on "how-to" and inspiration.

The site that first called repetitive doodling "Zentangles" - Zentangle.com (http://www.zentangle.com) - be sure to check their "about" page for lots of info
Lots of fun tangle patterns here - Tangle Patterns (http://tanglepatterns.com/)
Chatty has a wonderful tute on Zentangles with a Twist - Zentangles with a Twist How To (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16122)
Zentangles with a Twist Social Group (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/group.php?groupid=37)

Stencil Links - copy and paste into Word, size each one to 2.25" wide and then print out on card stock

Freeprintable.com Stencils (http://www.freeprintable.com/free-printable-stencils?page=1)
Stencils at Activity Village (http://www.activityvillage.co.uk/templates.htm)
Free Stencils at Spray Paint Stencils (http://www.spraypaintstencils.com/categories.html)

We're going to kick this off on Thursday at 12:01 am your local time ('cause I'm impatient and want extra time!) and end on Sunday at 11:59 pm your local time.

Please post pictures of your ZAT creations - ATCs, inchies, twinchies, rinchies, chunkies, bookmarks, wall art, die cuts, etc. - and whether it's available for trade. We want to see the Zentangles!
If you don't know how to post your images to the thread: How to Insert Images in Your Post (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13967)

Trading - You are more than welcome to make trades with other players. Please DO NOT post requests for trades to the thread. It can get way too confusing. Please use the Private Message (PM) system. Don't delete your image or post after making a trade; please go back and edit your post.

Note: If you do make a trade, please be sure to send to your trade partner within two weeks. If you’re running late, communicate!

WANT TO COMPLIMENT AN ARTIST: And you will… remember you can click the You Rock button and leave it there.

Let's get some challenge ideas going! We have four days to create challenges for, so let's put on our thinking caps! Of course, the challenges are not mandatory. You can always do your own thang.

Challenges
Thursday - B&W with pencil shading
Friday - use a stencil somewhere on your card
Saturday - color and/or words/letters
Sunday - die cut shapes for base

I'm going out of town Thursday - Sunday, and wouldn't you know, I was planning on taking my Zentangle supplies with me because they are portable (and not messy)! So, I will play along too, although mine aren't of a quality to trade yet, I will practice hard during the marathon :)

Me too, lately.

All righty, I know it's past midnight in some parts of the world! Who's gonna be first for Show and Tell?

And I'm still VERY open to suggestions on the challenges! I just put some of my thoughts in since I didn't get a response on the challenges. If you have suggestions, please let me know!! More than one challenge is good as well; gives another option!

And free-form/abstract/do your own thang is always a good thing to see! The challenges are just to get your imagination kick started.

Today's challenge, should you accept it, is black and white with pencil shading. Otherwise, if you feel like adding color, go for it!

I've added a color challenge for Saturday, but you don't have to wait for Saturday to do color. ;)

I managed to create 2 zentangles today. For me it was the first time that I added pencil shading to them. Here it is now 8 o'clock in the evening and I have not even read my morning newspaper or had dinner. Hopefully I can draw more zentangles tomorrow. Pictures of today's atc are attached.

That's why it's a challenge for some. A lot of people only do the ink; I wanted to get people to really look at what shading can do for your art.

And I love the Zentangle site. That's where I learned back in May during my first ZAT. I actually started with stencils to make bugs.

I may make more ZAT Bugs this time for either the stencil or color challenge.

I'm working on a 7x10 canvas and will cut it into ATCs when it's finished. No pic yet; still working on the ink. I may finish it tomorrow and then go on to the next challenge.

When this is finished, I'll have 8 ATCs and will post them for trade individually.

Do most people draw their zentangles right on the ATC, or do you draw it on paper, and then mount it to a card backing? If mounting, will matte medium make the pencil smear?

Haven't worked with Zentangles much, and not in ATC size, so I'm trying to get a feel for how it is usually done.

Thanks,
Camilla

Ugh, I love the theme for today and it has been non-stop with people over, riding my bike in the rain to pick up my daughter from school, phone calls, etc. I am working on one though!

I wanted to share a link to a "stencil" site that I use. You just right mouse click on the stencil, save it to your computer, and print it out with whatever program you prefer. I like to copy and paste into Word, size each one to 2.25" wide and then print out on cardstock. Here are some links:

Yay! I am so excited I found this thread! I just want to make sure I understand how it works here. From Thursday through Sunday of each week there is one sort of zen to do, right? Like last night (Thursday) I could have done and posted a black and white zen with pencil shading, tonight done one with a stencil, and tomorrow something with color and/or words, etc. Right?

I hope it is ok to jump in mid challenge, because tomorrow is my only day off and I love to zen!

One more question: the first page said that Sundays are for "die cut shapes for base". What does that mean?

I have several projects coming up that I intend to use Tangles on, so I need to learn a few more, and choose which ones I want to use for my projects. 8:07am. Two practice tangles done. Flutter, and Cirquital. I agonized over Flutter yesterday, and today resorted to graph paper. I'm still not happy with it. Don't know that I will use this pattern much. Cirquital was fun, and fast, in comparison! Both look pretty amateurish in the attached file - but I am enjoying the process of learning. They are indeed very "Zen"-like, and I find myself lost in work for an hour or more without thinking of anything else :)

A die-cut shape is a shape that is cut from a machine such as a Sizzix. They are also available for purchase pre-cut, or you can just cut your canvas into a shape of your choosing. You can use stencils to create your shape before cutting if you choose.

I recently bought some shaped board book journals--birds, flowers, circles.

If you can't find them, or don't have pre-cut shapes, then just work your tangles on your choice of canvas.

I need to take my 5 year old out today, as she was missing attention yesterday! Hopefully all will be posted by midnight tonight.

Inchies for the ZAT this weekend. I'm working through the book TOTALLY TANGLED - wonderful resource. Thought I'd try some of the patterns so here is my "take" on them. The inchies are adhered to the backing with temporary tape and the name of the pattern is on the back of the inchie. Will trade each set for a set of 6 inchies or for a single ATC.

Sorry to be such a bother about the die-cut piece. So should the final shape of the piece itself be the die cut flower (or tree, or circle, etc)? Can this then be mounted on an ATC card, or is the point for it to be in the shape you choose?

Cat's Cradle
11-14-2010, 07:25 PM
You're not a bother at all! Questions are how we learn.

If you want to create a tangle, then cut it, go for it. If you want to create a tangle on a shape and mount it on an ATC, go for it! It's all up to you how you finish the pieces.

The point of the challenges is to think outside of the realm of "normal" or what you usually do. Trying to think about other possibilities. Make sense? or is it clear as mud? ;)

Catscradle I love all the shapes and colors! So much detail and fun to look at.

Phoenix here is a die cut I did for a ZAT awhile ago. It's a straight die cut - unmounted - so when people traded me they got a bird that they could add to a journal, a scrapbook, or hang up somewhere. :) (It was a fairly good size - too big for a chunky even.)

Still working on it, actually. Gonna take a small break and work on a bird for a little while, then finish the ATC canvas.

Remember to post your tangles, even after the ZAT is over. We want to see those last-minute ones as well!!

Thanks to catscradle for hosting this fun Zentangle-a-Thon! I worked all weekend on learning tangles, and also worked on a Zentangle project. I learned a lot! It was nice to just focus on one technique for the entire weekend. I'm off to bed for the night - last one to leave turn out the lights!

Not sure how many of you get the Zentangle newsletter, but Rick & Maria have started a YouTube account and here is how to do Betweed!

So, I'm almost 2 hours late, but I finished challenges 2,3 and 4 (I posted number 1 earlier). Whew! I've had such fun, and am grateful to our wonderful hostess for letting me join late. I'm glad I went back and did all four challenges. I can't believe how much I've learned in just a couple of days! Thank you everyone!

Here are the zens with a stencil, with letters/word, and a die cut.

wow those are awesome! I'm so sorry I was unable to participate - what with a funeral to go to on Saturday and church all day Sunday, I was just too tired - life caught up with me this time.

Thanks to all who played along this weekend! I had a lot of fun, even though my weekend turned out busier than I had expected.

Will get my bird and finished ATCs posted later today.

My bird journal page. This one is a keeper; I can't give it up. Even if I had wanted to, my 14 month-old bent the tip of the wing and the tail.
