NOTICE: We extended this a-thon!

Start time (in your time zone) 12:00 pm (noon) on Sunday December 26, 2010 and end time (in your time zone) 11:59 pm (midnight) Sunday January 2, 2011

What all can we do: ATC’s, chunky pages, 4x4’s, 4x6’s, inchies, twinchies, charms, jewelry, art dolls, skinny pages, journal pages, tags, rolos, gothic arches, post cards – or whatever type of art your heart calls you to create!

All mediums are welcome: collaging, sewing, painting, drawing, digital altering, photographs, metal work, beading, sculpting...

And of course we can trade :jiggy:.

OPTIONAL CHALLENGES FOR THIS A-THON:

Sunday: use at least one postage stamp / completing at least one ATC that's been sitting unfinished for far too long

Monday: APCs / recycling some of the holiday packaging or wrapping in your art

Tuesday: a stamped image somewhere in your art

Wednesday: layers (as many as you can)

Thursday: the 1-1-11 / New Year

Friday: something new (new technique)

Saturday: hand drawn / painted cards

Sunday: non ATC day (dotees, jewlery, whatever)

This a-thon is open to everyone and every kind levels and types of art.

What IS an A-THON?
It’s a marathon when you can create art, done over the same time in each time zone. This thread is going to be our crafting room.

HOW IT WORKS:
Start creating art when it's time to start, then upload your lovely creations to your gallery and post to the thread. Trading and chatting are going on all the time.

HOW TO ASK FOR A TRADE:
When you find a piece of art you would like to trade, please SEND A PERSONAL MESSAGE (pm) to that person asking for a trade. Please DO NOT post requests for trades to the thread. It can get way too confusing.

Note: If you do make a trade, please be sure to send to your trade partner within two weeks. If you’re running late, communicate!

WANT TO COMPLIMENT AN ARTIST:
And you will… remember you can click the You Rock button and leave it there.

HOW TO POST YOUR ART TO THE THREAD:

From your atcsforall.com gallery:
It’s easiest to have two windows open.
1) Go to your gallery & right click on the picture you wish to post - this brings up a menu that includes “Copy Image Location”.
2) Click on the “Copy Image Location”
3) Go to your post and hit the "insert image" button (looks like a postcard)
4) Paste the address (right click, click paste or Ctrl V) into the window that pops up and hit OK - that puts the code into your post for your picture to show up; (you paste the address from the properties box over the http thingy that shows when you open the "insert image" box)
5) and then you're done.

[IMG]http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/296/small/1_64.jpg [/IMG

(leaving the last bracket off the above so you can see how the address will look)

Remember that images from the gallery can be small, medium or large. Find the word or letters s m l in the address and change it to size you want.

From your computer:
1. Click POST REPLY at the bottom of the messages screen. Above the message box, click the paperclip next to the smiley face. Then upload as usual. This will upload your picture as a thumbnail.
2. If you go into the Quick Reply box at the bottom of the messages screen, click GO ADVANCED and you will get the paperclip above the message box.

From a flickr or photobucket account:
http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2115

NEW TO A-THONS?
If you have any questions at all, feel free to pm me or RobbyGirl, or post your questions to the thread. We have a lot of experienced art-a-thoners who are more than willing to help those of you new to this craziness.

IMPORTANT: REMEMBER TO PUT YOUR USERNAME ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARDS. You can't get an iTrader if your trading partner doesn't know who you are.

Yay! Can't wait! I'm thinking about trying some APCs if I can find ones the right size. So far all the ones I've found are 2 1/4 inches, not 2 1/5 inches, but I will persevere. (Dollar stores here I come!)

I love the challenges sniisk.
I aim to make at least something every day, though Wednesday may be a challenge as my sisters, my mother and myself have a tradition of a shopping day together. We meet for breakfast and shop until the last shop is shut, having a lot of fun encouraging each other to buy things whilst chatting and catching up constantly.

I have this week off so I hope to get some stuff done for this. I am at my boyfriend's and although I have a craft room set up here, it isn't as well stocked as my own. It feels as if I hauled a ton of stuff with me, but I'm sure I'll dicover something I really wanted to use that got left behind. Oh well, sometimes fewer choices actually leads to more productivity for me.

calluna
12-25-2010, 06:14 PM
APC = altered playing card

Whew, I finished the last of my holiday crafts/gifts overnight and now am free!

One of my goals, during the ATART and beyond, is to make some ATCs based on the crazy sentences formed in the "Something Out of Nothing" thread game, found here in the Lounge (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16005).
Some of the sentences I can't make sense of, but many are very descriptive (and utterly hilarious:biglaugh:) and they seem like great inspiration. A swap would be fun, to see everyone's interpretations! But the person who came up with the sentence ought to have first dibs on cards inspired by them, I'd imagine.

This is the template I've adapted for my use. You many need to set the the page scaling or print to fit setting to none to get it to print out the 4x6 size. http://belindaschneider.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/gothicarchtemplate.pdf

miloccpep, if you mix in some water to your paint, you will get a lighter wash, and it will take a little longer to dry, if that is what you need. There are also gel extenders you can buy to add to acrylic paint so it will stay wet a little longer for mixing, staying wet on the palette, etc.

Nice cards! :)

I'm on for APC collecting, too. And other stuff too! And if you can't find cards that are wide enough, CynthiaSillietoes, you can just back them on the right size cardstock. That gives them a little "frame" and is a nice variation.
For altering playing cards I have discovered that alcohol inks work well and 1 layer of a printed paper napkin or tissue paper (may not be colorfast, though) gives a nice translucent background. Also a bit of acrylic can be sponge dabbed on if you want to take away some of the shiny white effect.
DEFINITELY check out Tinka and Bluelotusflower. They have awesome APCs.

SpiritSoul, that's a great suggestion! So far I haven't found any cards wide enough (have only looked in my stash, not ventured out yet) and I knew having them a little too narrow would drive me crazy. I guess I need some sandpaper, too. What does everyone use?
I'm off to the studio soon. I came here first for inspiration and found some. :) I'll get at least a short session in today and then really get into it tomorrow. I somehow wound up with more family commitments than I intended....but they bribed me with chocolate. :) Ok, let's go see what I can find in the avalanche within an avalanche (my desk within my studio.)

I finished a card that has been waiting forever to be completed. It is a handmade copy of a card I made for a swap, and then was sad that I had swapped it away. So now I have my own card to keep :) It is still drying, so I can't post it here, but here is what the original card looked like. (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=183910)

I am going to start a special album for cards I make that I love too much to give away. I find I am trading away all my best art, and then I regret it. I have nothing to show for my work, when people ask to see it, other than scans on the computer. Anyone else ever feel like that about their cards? How can you have a portfolio of your best work, if you give it all away?

On to challenge #2 for today...

Ok, I met both challenges today (finished a card, and made a card with postage stamps on it). And I made two more cards with text backgrounds, as well. Everything is drying nicely at the moment. If I do nothing else today, I am satisfied with myself. :) Feels good to be back in the studio again.

I love hearing about what everyone else is working on :)

Got one card done, using a postage stamp. I also found a pack of playing cards. (Yay!) I also trimmed some cardstock for another swap, which was a good reminder of why I started buying pre-cut ATCs: 1. Even with a guide, straight lines are not my forte and 2. My cat thinks the paper cutter is very intriguing. (No damage done to the cat, of course, since I decided I'd rather give up than explain why she was missing half her whiskers.)

BTW, the card's in my gallery. I'll eventually figure out how to post a smaller size of it to the thread. All I can get now is a large image and it looks strange. (I'm more creative than tech-savvy.)

When you paste the image location here, there should be letters "s", "m" or "l" or texts "small", "medium" or "large". You propably have large mode and could change it.

CynthiaSillitoe, here is how it looks like when it is in the "small" mode:

As you can see, I changed the text "large" and now it is "small":

APCs - Simple Silhouette Series. (The silhouettes are Cricuit die-cuts) I keep thinking that embellishments would detract from the clean lines of the silhouette. Maybe some day I'll get over that but for now I kept it simple.

Found more half done cards! Here's two of them -
ATART 7: Cats-cutout, stamped, and postage stamps of cat and fish.
ATART 8: Carnation - placing a postage stamp does make a difference! That space was empty! This is meant for Sandy who sold me these stamps! She's not into stamping, lucky me!
I've wanted to use postage stamps for sometime, but never really got the inspiration. Going through this thread inspired me no ends! Thank you fellow artists!!

Joyflower is right, it felt good to complete the cards that were left half finished! Thanks for coming up with that idea!

OK, so not wanting to get in a rut, I pulled out a couple of boxes of "stuff" in my studio and decided to make some ATCs using what was in there. I had punchinella (sequin waste) and skeleton leaves. Looking at the colors, I decided to do a Four Seasons thingie. Here they are. A few have some organza or ribbon or something else on them, too....from my box called "bits".

Good morning Joss, and everyone else too! I've never done an APC, so today's challenge will be a real challenge.

I think I will try my alcohol inks for the first time, too. I don't have the special Ranger felt applicator - what will work well instead? I have cosmetic sponge wedges. How about those? Also have sponge stencil daubers.

Happy creating today, everyone. I'll upload pics of yesterday's cards later this morning, after I get them scanned.

there are other ways to mix alcohol inks other than the applicator
i like to put drops on a piece of tin foil
add the blending solution
drag, pounce or swirl your card through enough times until you like the way it looks
if you use a metallic, only a tiny amount will do
don't blend until all the colors are muddy

you can always repeat this process after it is dry if the colors arent what you like

you can drop ink on a card add blending solution to the center
keep alternating ink and solution - kind of makes a flower looking shape

you can put drops on your card, add blending solution, dab with your fingertips (be sure to have on rubber gloves)

drops of ink, blending solution and canned air make some nice feathered shapes

surface of card has to be a slick material or it will only soak in and not blend
i get a clay coated scrapbook paper and cut to atc size

Great ideas - thanks! I wouldn't have thought of using canned air! Makes sense, though :)

I'll be using it on glossy playing cards so shouldn't have a problem with it soaking in. For regular ATCs, I'm not familiar with clay-coated scrapbook paper. What about using glossy photo printing paper?

i havent tried glossy photo paper
and i forgot to mention, i also use ink on clear plastic for an overlay (using the tin foil technique)
they sell the clay coated paper at michaels, it is about $2 a sheet, but that makes around 12 cards
btw - i love alcohol ink!

Good Morning amazing artists! What fabulous work Wowsa! I'm gathering up my supplies and heading out to find a quiet place to draw. My new kitchen floor tiles have to be sealed today and it's a smelly, messy process that means we have to be out of the house for a few hours. Hopefully I'll be back early afternoon to post some new art!

Oh on the alcohol ink subject, I have small spritzers to spray it on too and I really like to dip my paintbrush in it and paint it on too! It dries fast though and a glossy photo type stock works best for that method although the pine trees I did yesterday were done on bristol and the ones I'm going to post in a few minutes too.

Glossy photo paper is great. It works better than the glossy card stock I have been able to find. It's less expensive in the long run. The office supply stores often have if for 'buy one get one' deals...and you can also get it at the $ stores!
Even though some of the 'purists' say not to use photo paper, the 'scrapbook/stamp store' near me uses it exclusively for all their samples and classes.
