Mixed media - International - theme tbd
who is still looking to be in a group?
************************************************** *********
this swap requires a huge amount of your time – there will be no withdrawls once you are accepted into the circle. Be very sure you are ready to take this on both in time and money – you will be looking at an 8 mth commitment.
you will need a Japanese Album Pocket Moleskine, you can find them at http://www.amazon.com/Moleskine-Japa...3706515&sr=8-1 and also at http://www.moleskineus.com/japanesebook.html
************************************************** ************
The rules that will keep us all happy <G>
*You Promise that you will see this thru to the end – no flaking allowed!
*You must be an actively trading member (defined as: positive iTrader across 2 swaps in the last 3 months)
*You must have 3+ months in good standing (no neutrals or negative iTraders)
*You have an iTrader rating of 25+
*You are willing and able to do your very best work
*you will mail on time – the 1st of each month.
*You must ship eight journals around the world using MANDATORY tracking/Delivery Confirmation – no media mail
If something unforseen (major major stuff not just getting behind) you are willing to send the journal ahead and have it come back at the end when you are able to work on it - this will only be allowed on a trail by trail basis.
you are willing to share your mailing info, a phone number and list a contact person - this is to be sure no journals go MIA - info will only be shared with your fellow circle members - it's truely Heartbreaking when a journal is lost forever due to a member going MIA.
************************************************** ***********
purchase your moleys,- they are appox. 3.5”x5.5” – pick out a theme - fill out and decorate the first non-accordian pages with your name, address, and travel plan - You may decorate the cover or not - Then, the first 3 pages are all yours - This is a good time to establish your theme and color scheme – this will give your fellow artist a better sense of your theme.
you will create a four page layout in each journal you receive – Please do only your very best work
Optional – include a little something extra in the back pocket of the journal for the artist working on your journal – this can be a bit of pretty fiber, or art paper - atc– signurture card- small charm – bookmark – what ever catches your fancy - This is just for fun – some of members want to play, but no pressure on anyone to participate
************************************************** ***********
remember to mail on TIME and use first class mail with Mandatory tracking/delivery Confirmations - use a well padded bubble envie, sturdy box or a small Flat Rate Box - for $4.95 to anywhere in the US, at any weight up to 70 lbs., Priority Mail shipping takes just 2-3 days, in the USA.
After you mail post to the thread that you have mailed and post the tracking/delivery confirmations.
For eyecandy check out the gallerys here and there are several groups at flickr
(links to come)
so if you are up for all those rules and ready to get on the molie train - pm me or post here in the thread - PLEASE read over the above carefully before signing up. Then get ready for the big art party moleskine blowout

Well, if you are willing to put up with dumb newbie questions, I'd like to join up since I hesitated and lost last time. Also January is hectic for me. The March start date is more doable especially since I left my moley at home duh.
Let me think up my theme. Is there any Bailey's to go with the Starbucks? :spinny:

moley bus! let me think about this some. i love group art adventures!
i do have one question/issue. it is quite possible i'll be moving states this summer (OMG I HOPE I GET THIS JOB I AM INTERVIEWING FOR!!). how would that be handled with something like this? mail ahead and come back at the end for that month or two? i'm guessing it will take a month or two. i'll have internet and, with planning, i can pull supplies to work on things while moving/settling in. just might be offline for a couple weeks BUT will have my cell phone for communications. I can also provide backup contact info incase i go MIA (aka my mommy dearest in seattle!)

I've found a glass of wine is a far better fix to menstrual cramps than the assortment of pills out there, so one week a month I have a few glasses. The mellowing side effects also combat the tendency to go around yelling at people, it's a win-win :D
dewtee
01-03-2011, 11:36 PM
Sounds like the perfect time to drink to me! I can't use that excuse, oh well . . .
goatgoddess
01-04-2011, 09:45 AM
Yeah I'm well past the menstrual cramps but good to know - will need to tell my daughter - she wasn't regular but now that the doctor has her back on track the cramps are back as well.

i have a few questions
if we are each doing 4 pages, can i do a collage on a four-page size piece of paper and then paste it on the molie pages, or does that make it too thick?
are we putting stuff (gifties) in the back pocket?
will we have information on themes and travel plan pretty soon?
will we be sending to the same person each month?
what is our treat for today beeps?

01-04-2011, 11:22 AM
Hey ladies I am just about done figuring out my theme... I have it at home ready to go, but I'm at work now, so will update later! JavaZarf, collage on a separate page, glued in is fine with me. I may be doing some on other paper to depending on what media I am using.
Let me know too if this won't work for folks. Looking forward to the treat of the day too!
goatgoddess
01-04-2011, 12:03 PM
JavaZarf -
1. if we are each doing 4 pages, can i do a collage on a four-page size piece of paper and then paste it on the molie pages, or does that make it too thick? you can do that - watercolor paper is a bit thick but if only one or two people do it then the molie will still fold up ok.
are we putting stuff (gifties) in the back pocket? I have in the past but it's up to each person - it's not required. you can stock it with goodies for each person - or put your goodie in as you rec. them for each person - which is what I tend to do.
will we have information on themes and travel plan pretty soon? as soon as I have all the contact info and themes :)
will we be sending to the same person each month? yes - just makes it easier I think to keep up with. It will be whoever is closest to you - for exp Deetee is Michigan so she may be mailing to catscradle in New York - just looking over locations quickly <G>

I want you all to do what you feel comfy doing, I don't want you to feel restricted. If you are feeling that pasting pages in my book is fine, then go for it!
Baaaaaaaaaa, get it together goatgoddess!
Okay, so you are saying put 7 goodies in your book and each person can pick something out when they receive it . . . or put a goodie in each book you receive . . . hmmmmm . . . decisions, decisions.
I need to get you my info, goatgoddess. My job is moving, and I need to get that new address to you.

Loving these themes!
I've glued a lot of different stuff into molies and decided in the end that I'd rather work directly in the book instead of trying to make stuff stay put. with the exception of watercolor, nearly everything else can be done right in the book pretty well.
I've found post-it notes make a very good mask to protect the art & following pages when you work in a moley.
GoldenWolf
01-04-2011, 10:09 PM
Thanks for sharing the idea about the post-it notes, Penlowe. Messing up over people's art or the blank pages is one of my major fears.
Still working on my theme. I'm leaning toward a dark carnival/circus theme if that isn't too broad-bearded ladies, scary clowns, conjoined twins, creepy barkers, and so on.

beeps
01-06-2011, 08:01 PM
(blar, i let down my guard for a couple days!)
penlowe's start is listed twice in the list!
that's a good question re: my play along project. part of me is like, good work quitting while you could beeps cause those themes are hard!! i'm gonna do a moley bus in the future called "easy super themes for the moley challenged."
pseudo theme will be, hum. i was going to do "dreams and nightmares" if i played in this one so i might stay with that. that could be fun. or "tell me about your day" wa ha ha!
Penlowe
01-06-2011, 08:56 PM
Yes, but its just a duplicate, there is no difference between the listings (Phew!)
This is a March 1 first mail date, correct?
Hoping my moley arrives today, the other thing I ordered at the same time came yesterday.

I had two waiting in the wings from Blick... Was even able to use a coupon! I am lucky enough to have one, in one of the burbs over, that they just made bigger and better(?) so have had them on hand! beeps, order one and when you need a break from the dissertation, I'll do a tip in in your theme for you! I can always use my second to do some tip ins of whatever, which could turn out to be really fun! You DO have the skills to do the themes in this bunch...(I know I have traded with you!) so just let me know! As for the themes I am really looking forward to this.... I know that it is going to stretch me, and hopefully I can do them all justice! Just a question, since this is my first one, are we "bleeding" from one artist to another? I would also really like to have some info about all you fab artists... perhaps on the back of the pages.... Like your name (printed) and then you signature, at least a city/state? How has this been done with other groups that you have been in? Just thinking about detail stuff right now... Let me know what you all think!? :)
JavaZarf
01-07-2011, 08:02 AM
i think bleeding would be cool
maybe you could put something on the signature page for additional info
like maybe boxes for people to write stuff
or since your theme is imaginary garden, make some flowers where people could write stuff on the petals
one of the fun things about molies is that there arent a lot of rules
people do what is fun for them
i am stalking several molies and there are many ways to do them
i am going to try to combine several ideas i have seen other people use
and maybe one or two of my own
Penlowe
01-07-2011, 08:44 AM
There is tons of room on the back of each spread, it's not a problem at all if you want more than just a signature to ask for additional stuff on the back.
I like bleed over too as long as it is reasonably controlled. If you get a book where the previous spread was media you don't work in, it can be super intimidating.
beeps
01-07-2011, 11:20 AM
i've seen examples that bleed and ones that are more like a spread of snapshots. i like both of them.
ohh tip in. so we make pages and would just send those to glue in ourselves? i don't totally understand the whole tip in thing.
ETA: nine inch nails "closer" just started playing on my pandora. random. guess it is time to get to this dissertation. lol.

I'm in group 12, and this is exactly what I'm asking of the artists to put on the back of the spread:
Username
Real Name (print and siggy)
General Location
A bit about themselves
Short story for their art (I'm doing a Zetti neighborhood)

Yes, GG & I have history about that. Gosh it was a couple years ago, we were in a swap on Craftster. She sent me a lovely sketch book with altered covers (which I still have btw). She dutifully wrapped it in a plastic bag before popping it in a USPS box. Some other box between there & here leaked sticky fruity-sweet smelling goo all over my box! I had to sign for it and open it in front of my postman so he could file a damage claim if necessary, but due to her forethought it wasn't required :)

Padding the box helps keep the molie from moving around as well. Tissue paper and/or bubble wrap work well.

Penlowe

"Bleeding" is when the art doesn't stop abruptly at the fold end of your allotted pages. A little art bleeds over to the next page, no more than 1/3 of the width of the page, often just a corner or a detail.

Trying to figure out how to have bleed over from spread to spread between artists. I might just go with the "good fences make good neighbors" thing and ask that everyone put borders on all sides of their spreads.

01-20-2011, 09:53 AM
You should let the artists who do art in your book bleed over their work. IMO it makes for better continuity. The artists decide what to beed over, not you . . . LOL! Just specify that bleed over has to be no more than 1/3 of a page . . .
goatgoddess
01-20-2011, 10:39 AM
that would work dewtee - as long the artist knows you want bleed over it would be fairly easy to do I should think - colors plus a couple of common elements. :)

i think most people buy smooch to color in rubber stamped images or to ink up their rubber stamps (i haven't done either)
i like to use it in different ways, like smear it around a bit or highlight something
it has lovely intense color and has shimmer and is blendable
and like alcohol ink, you can use it on metal or plastic
i only have red and molasses colors
it has a very fine tip that you can do very intricate placement of color

Thanks everyone! I needed that... I still have the 3 page spread to do... I know that I won't at this time have time to do my cover... Will do it and post when it makes it's way back to me. I am so tired.... Parent teacher conferences the last 2 weeks have taken it out of me... I will get the spread done this weekend... I am going to make it come hell or high water!

Thank you!!! I just got my order of Inktense pencils yesterday so did the poppy red section with those pencils. I used gamsol instead of water because I didn't want to mess the pages up. All the other pencil work is with Prismacolor colored pencils and gamsol.

Thanks JavaZarf and Corrie04 . . . You can get the gamsol at an art supply store. I got my Inktense pencils from Dick Blick, they have the best price I've seen for them. I got a 12 pack set then ordered other individuals colors that I liked. Make sure you pay attention to the lightfastness rating. You can get that information off of the Derwent website. I went this route as I knew I was going to have to do art on the back of the non-accordian page. The Prismacolor illustration markers and the colored pencils work well for this technique. I also order my colored pencils from Dick Blick. You can move the colored pencil around using the gamsol with a paper stump just like watercolor, but it will not soak through the back. With the Inktense, I was surprised that they worked the same when using the gamsol. When you use the Inktense with water, they turn into ink and when they dry, turn permanent. You can put more layers on top without the worry of bleeding or changing the colors.
Corrie04, you know when you get hit, more than likely I'm getting hit! I'm so sick of this snow . . . UGH!!!

Dewtee, Love the travel page! Very pretty! I haven't ever heard of gamsol! I think that I am going to need some! Ha! I have the Inktense pencils and I like the look of this so much on your travel page that I am going to have to try it out! Plus with the paper in the mollies not working so well with watercolors, this would be a good end run around it! Thanks for the info! Can't wait to see your 3 page spread! Yours is one that I already have ideas for too!
Just googled gamsol! DUH! Odorless mineral spirits.... already have some, just a different brand! Now I have to try out that technique!
dewtee
02-25-2011, 05:40 PM
Thank you! LOL! I'm glad you have some, give it a try. I have several moleys . . . I have a sketch one that I do testing in that is the same paper as the accordian moley and use it to try out different techniques. I've tested just about every medium there is in it to see if it soaks through the back of the pages, etc . . .
That picture is poo poo . . . it looks better in person. You can lay down your Inktense or colored pencils with a good light layer, you don't have to be neat and you don't have to press hard, just fill in the color . . . then dip your paper stump (the hard one, not the tortillion) in the OMS and just start moving the color around. I have a thin stump and a thick stump dedicated to each color family. I ordered those really cheap from Dick Blick too, and they carry 4 or 5 different sized stumps. The OMS will soak clear to the back side but will dry up and you will not see anything on the back side of the paper. You can also continue to layer on top of what you have already worked with the OMS. If you overwork the pencil, that is okay, just color in a little more color in that area and smooth it out.

Oh! Awesome thanks for the tips! I was so excited about this technique that I told a High school student that I have sort of been coaching about this technique. I have not even tried it yet, but she is someone who also works with colored pencils, and I turned her on to the prismacolor blending pencils and she was thrilled. I told her about the gamsol this evening and she is going to experiment as am I! It is so cool to learn about new stuff! As I googled it, I ran across info that that this technique started with the stamping folks. I would have never thought about using mineral spirits with colored pencils... guess you have to think outside the box sometimes! So Thank You!
dewtee
02-26-2011, 01:01 AM
LOL! You are quite welcome! Those blending pencils ROCK! Many years ago, I started out doing beadwork, then rubberstamping and mixed media work, then scrapbooking . . . so I have been using this technique for a long time! I'm glad you were able to pass on the information to another artist. Let me know how your experiments go. If you get a practice Moleskine, make sure you get one with the heavy paper. I have a medium sized sketchbook 5x8 1/4 inches that I do my doodling and practice stuff in. Don't get the cahiers or other thin paper journals . . .

I'm not usually one to mail at the last minute but this still feels very incomplete. I'm mailing it anyway as it is my book and I can play with it more when it comes back to me :)
and it's a terrible scan, oh well, I'm tired right now.

Good News first. I have my travel pages and my three page spread done. I feel like mine needs something more too, but as Penlowe pointed out, I can always rework it or add to it once it comes back to me. I'll post the scans later. Right now, I need to tuck the goodies in the back pocket, pack it up and take it to the post office before five.
Some bad news. I put some light dye ink on the 4th accordian page, before I remembered I only needed to do four pages. It's very light though and should be easy to paint or gesso over. I guess if that's the only mistake I make it's not too bad.

Hi Ladies! Mine went postal to JavaZarf, right at the last moment before they shut up the post office today! I am being the large and in charge teacher, and had kids with me until 4:30 today, (school ends at 2:15) and then cruised to the post office. (I was sick of all the late turn ins, and told them all, that I WAS DONE! If they did not turn in the assignment that was due today at the beginning of the hour (Homework for the month, that actually takes maybe about an hour of their time, for the month) that they had to call their parents and arrange to stay after school until which time that they completed said assignment. (sucked for me) Anyhoo... Mine is on it's way... I didn't do the cover... I have a polaroid transfer, that is hand colored that I did for it, but I don't think that it will travel well, so I will attach when I get it back. I am scanner less at the moment, so I will post it tomorrow. The confirmation # is: 0310 1230 0002 3477 3442. I will be adding my "stuff" as yours come to me rather than having you grab one as it comes by... (timing issues) If you would, I did do a sign in page at the back, and also if you would print your name, then sign, and add your place in the world along with your name on the site on the back of your pages somewhere, I would love that. I did it on the back of mine, so you will see when it comes to you! If you would like to paste a pic of yourself on the back too, that would be a bonus! I would love to put a face to the name! Your choice however. Long winded I know, but here is my three page spread... also I am open media, so whatever you all want to do is fine with me! (feel free to bleed a bit too, if it suits you, I did) Dewtee, I couldn't work in the butterfly and bees, so I will leave that up to you! :) The venus fly trap and a few ants was the best I could do! :)

I just left a note in my plastic bag the Moley is in asking people to sign on the back of the pages. I'd hoped there might be enough room for people to sign on their travel page tickets, but not enough room there especially for people with longer screennames. Oh well, I'm sure I'll learn from my mistakes and getting to see what others do.
