One more thing, do you know if acrylic paints work good on dominoes?
adifferentstory
03-17-2008, 03:32 PM
Welcome to the swap chatty.
I'm from the Uk so I wouldn't buy from the same places as you. If you goole diamond glaze it should come up with lots of places to get it from. I do know it's easier to get in the USA than the UK.
Acrylic paints work well on dominoes. Sand your domino first so that the paint has something to grip to.

03-22-2008, 04:17 AM
I am interested.....I have been reading the thread, and I got hooked on scrabble tile charms a while back. However, all the dominoes I have ever seen were black, and none of the links mentioned gesso. I can't see how Sharpies would show up on the black without coating the surface with something, unless you used only metallic pens.
How can you do this without using acrylic or gesso or something similar?
adifferentstory
03-22-2008, 04:27 AM
Here the black dominoes are smaller than the size stated and not smooth but have a ridged pattern on them which makes it impossible to paint or draw on. In general both in the UK and US standard dominoes are either white, ivory or cream coloured. If the black ones are the standard 1 x 2 inch size and are smooth tyhen there is no reason why they can't prime them with gesso first. If they are the ridged kind I think you would find it practically impossible to draw or pain on.

3205hi everyone. here are my dominoes, I made 6 to trade and one for the host. they are painted acrylic, pigment ink pen, glitter paint, and a spray finish. I used blue wire and beads to make it into a pendant. then I put it on an adjustable white cord. you can remove the cord if you choose to. hope who ever gets them, likes them. first time I ever painted something this small and it was a real learning process. I will send them off this week. the picture does not show them too well. they are a barn scene in the snow.

A question: are you all putting a glaze, or some sort of protective layer on your dominoes, or just sending them as is; mine are done with Sharpie; I'm not sure if they need something more... And another question: is there a preference for the finished use of these...shall I make them into pendants, or pins, or magnets...or leave them be!? I've never done this sort of swap before, and I'm feeling just a tad insecure!
adifferentstory
04-02-2008, 07:44 PM
It is up to you as to what you turn them into or leave as they are.
9/10 times I use a glaze. My preferred glaze is diamond glaze. If using diamond glaze or something similar with sharpies it can make the pen bleed if you putt too much on to start with. I always but a very thin layer on first with my finger before giving it a ticker coat or aplying a 2nd coat with my finger. You can also use acrylic gel medium too. Some people use a sparay varnish but i've never used this so can't comment on how good that is. Of course you don't have to give it a glaze if you don't want to, it's just my opinion that is is better protected if you do.
chatty
04-03-2008, 01:58 PM
LavenderLizard please don't be intimidated. This was my first time painting domino I found it a little intimating myself. ..giggle.. but something I surely want to keep doing I just love it.
frogwings I don't know about sealing your work as afferentstory mention I have heard about this diamond glaze I have some order to experiment with.
This what I did one time on paper. I had drawn a picture using pen and color pencils. I sealed it first with Krylon Workable Fixatif tis a spray sealer for pencil and inks. Once that dried completely then I added 2 layers of varnish. Came out very nice no smears. I don't know how fixatif works on dominoes if you have an extra domino I would spray it and see what it does.
On my dominos I sanded then apply about 3 layers of gesso sanding lighting then I pencil in my pattern then I started applying layers of acrylic paint till I got the look I wanted. Once all done then I apply about 3 layers of varnish to seal my work.

awwwwwww you are sooooooooo kind my dear! I will say I usually have an off handed approach to my own work. I will have to work on that, cause I want others to only have positive feelings about their work, so I must practice what I preach. I will also say, that I really was a little unsure of this project. I love to paint and draw, but have never painted so small.......it is a special knack for sure. I really love collage work on dominoes since it is something I have done often. chatty's really are amazing, bet they are even more so in the real.

I've mailed my dominoes! The post office said it should take 5-10 days, so they should make it by May 3rd without a problem. If for some reason they are late, feel free to just keep them. I was pretty happy with the set I sent in (five dominoes, with two packaged together to be traded like one). I sent an extra as well, so keep one of your choice for yourself!
I ended up having the most success with alcohol inks and sharpies, which I then sealed with four coats of crystal clear Krylon. I had to make the coats thin since some of my first attempts smeared. So they should hold up well! I hope you guys like them.

SallyAnne that was one of mine. I thought i'd signed the backs of all of them. Ooops, sorry. The background and the base of the flower was done with Bic Mark-It pens and then I used polychromos pencils over the top.

Your welcome.
I've got my fab dominoes - Pretty flower from adifferent story, ginger tabby from amyfaerie, and cute little snow scene from artsygemini. What a wonderful selection. I really did enjoy doing these, even though my drawing is not particularly spectacular, to say the least, so thanks Lyn for giving me the chance to at least have a go!!!!!!
