Zentangle-a-Thon (ZAT) for January 28-30, 2011

First things first. Links for info on "how-to" and inspiration.

The site that first called repetitive doodling "Zentangles" - Zentangle.com (http://www.zentangle.com/) - be sure to check their "about" page for lots of info
Lots of fun tangle patterns here - Tangle Patterns (http://tanglepatterns.com/)
Chatty has a wonderful tute on Zentangles with a Twist - Zentangles with a Twist How To (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16122)
Zentangles with a Twist Social Group (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/group.php?groupid=37)

We're going to kick this off on Friday, Jan. 28 at 12:01 am your local time ('cause I'm impatient and want extra time!) and end on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 11:59 pm your local time.

Prep: Feel free to cut your canvases ahead of time, as it gives more time for art during the weekend. ATCs for Friday, Inchies and Twinchies for Saturday, and 2" x 7" bookmarks for Sunday. You can go as far as drawing your initial strings, but no repetitive patterns till Friday! ;)

Please post pictures of your ZAT creations and whether it's available for trade. We want to see the Zentangles!
If you don't know how to post your images to the thread: How to Insert Images in Your Post (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13967)

Trading - You are more than welcome to make trades with other players. Please DO NOT post requests for trades to the thread. It can get way too confusing. Please use the Private Message (PM) system. Don't delete your image or post after making a trade; please go back and edit your post.

* On all your art, please include your name, username, location and ZAT date.

Note: If you do make a trade, please be sure to send to your trade partner within two weeks. If you’re running late, communicate!

WANT TO COMPLIMENT AN ARTIST: And you will… remember you can click the You Rock button and leave it there.

Challenges - Challenges are not mandatory, but can certainly add another element of fun. Especially if you get stuck on what to do!!

Friday - ATCs. Pick a letter. Then go to Tangle Patterns (http://www.tanglepatterns.com) and click on that letter link. Only use patterns that begin with that letter.
Variation: use each letter in your name with the above method.

Saturday - Black/white/red Inchies or Twinchies. The size of your canvas affects your patterning, so challenge yourself to make something out of your norm. If you have red and white gel pens, try a black canvas. If not, white or red canvas would work best.

Sunday - Bookmarks! Size: 2" x 7" please. Any color, any patterns. Add a tassel (beaded or not) if you wish, but please keep the bookmarks flat.

01-22-2011, 02:27 AM
oo oo I'm first to sign up - I LOVE zentangles!!
For the challenges:
- Could we specify Inchies or Twinchies for one day? It is amazing how the change in size focuses your zentangles.
- Certain colour schemes - white/black/red is popular, cool/warm colours
- Using a particular pattern as the focus point

Just a few off the top of my head

Sounds like fun - I'll be there!

I read about a challenge that might be interesting. You take the letters of your name, and use only tangle patterns that begin with each letter of your name. Tanglepatterns.com arranges the tangles alphabetically, so it should be easy to find tangles that start with specific letters.

Or draw or stencil a block letter of the first letter of your name, and fill that with various tangle patterns.

Lovely ideas from both of you!!

Let's do black/white/red Inchies for Saturday. That sounds like a really fun challenge.

And I love the lettering idea! Maybe just pick a letter and then tangles that start with that letter, rather than doing names. How's about Friday for that one?

Sounds like fun challenges.

01-23-2011, 02:40 PM
Only done one zetti before but it was super calming, and the dates are right around midterms so I'll need calming. Definitely be doing some when it comes around :)

01-23-2011, 08:25 PM
I'm marking my calendar - sounds fun!

Looking forward to playing as much as I can.

Start getting your canvases prepped!

Things to do for prep:

Cut them into your inchies, twinchies, ATCs, bookmarks, etc.
String your canvases in pencil if you wish--but no repetitive patterns yet!
Mark the back of your canvases with your letter of choice for Friday.
For Saturday, red or white canvases will work best. If you have red and white gel pens, you may want to try black canvases.

We still need a challenge for Sunday! Anyone up for bookmarks and chunkies?

01-25-2011, 04:39 PM
I think bookmarks would be great.

01-25-2011, 10:43 PM
If I can get internet where we are going this weekend I will be there.... oh I hope I can!!

01-25-2011, 10:44 PM
I looked up some of the patterns today. I might do some cards just to practice since a lot of them are new to me. Thanks for sharing the website, it's pretty awesome :)

01-26-2011, 05:07 AM

I am so excited and need to do zens for a bit; stress is getting to me! I love the challenges for the weekend. If I get ambitious, I might make a few of each and have gifts for friends. Yay!

01-26-2011, 10:01 AM
Great challenges!

IŽll try to play as much as possible! Looking forward to it. :jiggy:

I just did a zentangled bookmark for the Bookmarker swap - that was lots of fun!
It was 2"x6", but in the future I would do 2"x7" because they will fit better into the vinyl sleeves I bought. You can embellish them with lots of fiber in a punched hole at the top, too :)

Hoping to have a good party this weekend.

Camilla, I specified 2" x 7" so we'd all be working the same size.

That's not to say that you have to trade like items! Whatever you decide in your trade agreements (via PM) is up to you.

One thing I will say: I don't recommend watercolor paper if you're using Sharpies. I used ultra fine Sharpies on watercolor paper for a bookmark I made for my 8 y/o in June, and the red is bleeding horribly. SO glad I laminated it!! (DS doesn't mind the change--says it's "cool"--but it's one of those things that shouldn't be done.)

I used 140# Bristol Board, and black Micron 001 pen for my bookmark I made recently. Turned out very well, no bleeding.

If you have a corner rounder punch, it makes the book marks look really nice!

I do have a corner rounder. My MIL is a Creative Memories consultant, so I get lots of fun toys from her.

I haven't had problems with my pigment pens on the watercolor paper. Just the Sharpies.

Such lovely tangles...I can see I might get better results if I limit the number of tangles to a few (there were 7 or 8 in my last one!)

Here is another, using patterns that begin wth C:

Here is ZAT 3, tangle based on patterns beginning with T

http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/6688/small/1_Totally_T.jpeg (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=203927)

I probably will do one more card, then call it quits for this challenge.

I have a question about tomorrow's though, as I've never done inchies or twinchies. I looked them up and have the general idea, but do you mount them or not? And if you do, do you just choose what to mount them on, like an ATC? Is it better to just keep them loose..is that the way they are traded? This is a whole new medium for me, which is why I love this place..I keep learning!

01-29-2011, 01:11 AM
I made one! Started at work during a meeting :D and finished up at home.

Cat's Cradle

Love it all!! I got one more done for the letter challenge and will post later.

Inchies - there are lots of ways to display them, usually in individual capacities. I'm working on my inchie collection to put them into an art journal. Some will go into my address journal under the artist's entry. Some people frame them to create a visual feast. Others just put them in a basket so they can look at them whenever.

As for mounting them, if you use a heavy enough canvas, you don't have to mount them. Just put your user name, real name and the date on the back. You'd be surprised how much you can write in that space! If you use a lighter weight paper, then putting them on card stock is a good idea.

When mailing them, there are several methods that work well. Tlouey has an awesome tape holder (http://multitaskmamma.blogspot.com/2010/11/ideals-methods-for-mailing-inchies.html) that works for mailing six or seven at a time....I've made a couple on the vertical--three rows--and one on the horizontal--two rows--and both worked equally well. If you have prints of your ATCs, this is a good way to use them.
There's also a matchbox mailer here (http://images112.fotki.com/v503/photos/1/155361/7331856/matchbookinchieholder1-vi.gif), though I have no personal experience with this one. I imagine, though, that it can be easily sized depending on how many inchies you are mailing. This could probably be used for twinchies as well.
And, of course, you can lightly tape them to an ATC blank for mailing. I recommend using a repositionable adhesive for this method, so the inchies can be easily removed by the recipient.

01-29-2011, 01:20 PM
Many beautiful zentangle cards! I have made some, but I don't know if they are good enought. I'll upload them anyway :).

Love your bookmarks Kristin! Wish I had had more time to make them today; I've only gotten one done so far. Had to take a break to work on my Moley--it has to go out by Tuesday and it needs some drying time! :swoon:

Thanks to our hostess for another fun marathon! It's so interesting to see the different tangle combos we all created. I hope everyone stays warm and safe during this monster storm this week.:radar:

I made 2 zen chunky pages yesterday but I didn't have time to upload them. I try to do it today if I have time. I'm afraid I'm working very late again.

Oh WOW is all I can say to the talented artists here( thank you to the host for hosting this too).... I just arrived back home after a couple day road trip out of state. I had no computer on this trip and also I left my fine tip markers in AZ....lol. I especially LOVE those bookmarks KE Sagers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would buy one of those or trade if I had anything worth trading which I dont yet here.

Thank you all for playing along, even if you only were able to do one or two cards. I ended up taking care of my littlest most of the weekend due to an asthma incident, so I didn't get as much done as I had hoped.

All my ZATs are still available. I hope you all get some trades!
