View Full Version : Grimm's Fairytale Swap ~ Due April 25th

03-06-2008, 10:24 PM
Swap Due Date: April 25th
Signup/Withdraw date: April 18th
Number of cards traded: 3 for 3
Number of participants: 12 players

Looking for a sweet, soothing tale to waft you toward dreamland?

Look somewhere else! Although they are often called "Children's Tales", they were not originally regarded as suitable for children, both for the scholarly information included and the subject matter...such as, turning the wicked mother of Snow White and Hansel and Gretel to a stepmother, were probably made with an eye to such suitability. They remove sexual references, such as Rapunzel's betraying the prince by asking why her clothing no longer fitted, and so revealing her pregnancy, etc. You get the idea. This swap is for those who would like to make a tribute to the original stories in their original form! No happily ever after here!

All mediums are welcome! All members both new and old are welcome as well! All I ask is that you send in your best work. Something you wouldn't be disappointed in receiving if it was sent to you. This will be a 3 for 3 swap. However, depending on how deep I get into this I might send an extra of my work in with each members three! NO gore and nothing too graphic...I don't want to have to censor anyone's work, :)

US Players ~ please send a self-addressed envelope with the postage you want used loose. Depending on the embellishments I might need to add some.

International players ~ please send a filled out address label, I will handle any postage fees!!

Remember: We all I want to be able to know who to give itrader back to. So, do not forget to put your username, swap name, and title on the back of each card!

An extra ATC in this theme is appreciated but not at all expected!

I'd like to take part, but I dindn't catch the theme yet. You mean I have to get the deeper sense out of the tale??- not just the tale itself.??

Half full, and this is just today!

03-07-2008, 05:04 PM
Hey Irma!
The basic theme behind all of this is the ORIGINAL grimm fairy tales. Most were slightly creepy and much more adult than the disney versions, etc. What I am looking for are ATCs that embody what the Grimm brothers really wrote, not what has been translated to fit the general stereotypical genre of fairytales! Does that help? Or is that more confusing? LOL!

03-07-2008, 05:39 PM
I can't resist this one!

03-07-2008, 06:11 PM
Welcome Miss!

03-07-2008, 07:39 PM
I would like to join.

03-07-2008, 08:49 PM

03-08-2008, 02:05 PM

03-08-2008, 02:23 PM
oooh, glad to see stormarela & katiev vying for spots with me . . . what a great lil' group of artists this swap has!

03-08-2008, 02:33 PM
I just read The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids, wow, that old mother goat sure new what to do... now, if only I can draw on paper half as well as the images in my mind... thats the test!

03-08-2008, 02:43 PM
I love this idea! May I join?

03-08-2008, 05:15 PM

I would like to officially say how appreciative I am to all the great artists who decided to join my swap!! I am proud of the lil group we have here, and of the talented people that will be using the swap to spread their work! I hope you all have an inspired time working on this!!! Thanx

03-10-2008, 09:31 PM
Let me know if there is any cancelations... I would love this one...

03-11-2008, 09:32 AM
Will let you know, liverson!! Thanks!

03-16-2008, 02:17 PM
I found this website that lists 209 fairy tales that the Brothers Grimm had compiled in during thier lives. Very interesting to me as I had no idea there were that many tales! I have been reading and reading. Some of the tales leaving me saying 'Huh? It cant just end that way'! And some of the tales are actually tiny tales that were compiled to make some of the fairy tales I am familiar with now.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Vicki Z
03-17-2008, 09:30 AM
This is a GREAT link, Bunnie.

I also found a book called Grimm's Grimmest by Wilhelm Grimm, Jacob Grimm
I must say that these fairytale versions are VERY different.

Oh, I sent in my cards. I had such FUN creating these! Please let me know when they arrive safely.

03-18-2008, 10:40 AM
VickiZ~ Your cards are wonderful and arrived in perfect condition! Thanks for your hardwork on them...I'm glad I got you inspired.

Bunnie~love your link!! Thanks for posting it so everyone can enjoy it!! I really appreciate it!

03-18-2008, 04:39 PM
Just in case what do you mean by its original form?

03-18-2008, 05:57 PM
I think original means NOT the Disney version.

Ooooh, thanks for that link! I had a book of Grimm, but must have left it at my parents house with my other books from university -- I took a class in children's lit and we read lots of these. My favorite is The Juniper Tree!

03-19-2008, 10:08 AM
liverson~KatieV is correct! The Disney versions edited a lot of the story out to make it more suitable for children. What I am looking for is the originals...you can find versions online, and at your local library.

03-21-2008, 04:52 PM
Could you take me off the wait list. Ill catch you next time. I ll be alittle swamped if i suddenly get in... if you know what I mean. thanks

03-26-2008, 09:05 AM
No problem, liverson! It's done!

03-30-2008, 08:04 PM
Hey Wuwooda! I'm sending mine out on Monday! They're all in my gallery and in Flickr. This one's from "The Peasant and the Devil."

03-30-2008, 08:46 PM
Great cards, amyfaerie! I especially love the Raven one.

03-31-2008, 06:23 PM
As always, I love your work! Can't wait to see them in person!

03-31-2008, 07:10 PM
I sent my cards today, and upload a picture. http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=7041

04-01-2008, 10:48 AM
Amyfaerie, your cards are great. My favorite is the devil one.

Stormarela, yours are great, too. I just love that evil moon.

I need to get busy on mine!

04-02-2008, 09:34 AM
Stormarela: Wow, I like yours! You captured the spooky words well without making them down right creepy! I love it! I'll let you know as soon as they arrive.

04-07-2008, 06:27 PM
I mailed mine today-- I really enjoyed making them, and hope everyone likes them!

04-08-2008, 09:49 AM
Thanks, miss! I'll let you know as soon as they arrive! Looking forward to seeing your art once again. Thanx

04-10-2008, 09:10 AM
Got joeyj1220 and miss's cards yesterday! You guys are going to love your returns! Not a bad one in the bunch so far! Can't wait to see the rest of yours!!

04-10-2008, 09:54 AM
I need to get started on mine! I am having trouble figuring out what to do. I am sure that once I figure it out it won't take me long.

04-11-2008, 09:38 AM
ElectaBlue, don't worry, I am making one for each of the players. It took me a little while to get my head wrapped around what I wanted to try and what I wanted to do. You still have time, so don't rush it! And if you find that this theme isn't inspiring you, you can still withdraw bythe 18th. But hopefully you'll get some last minute muse!

04-11-2008, 05:39 PM
I think it will be no problem if I actually had the chance to sit down and focus. I don't want to withdraw because I want some of these other cool cards I have been seeing.

Wow! You are making one for everyone? That is a lot of cards. I just sent out the returns for the first swap I hosted today and I had thought about making one for everyone, but ended up not getting enough made.

04-15-2008, 09:11 AM
It's a big job, I know! But I already had a few that I had made and were going to post up for trade, so I only had to make a few more to have one for every person. If I had started from scratch my mind would have inploded by now, lol.

04-21-2008, 10:51 AM
Here are my cards. They're in the mail. Crossing my fingers that they'll get there quick!

04-21-2008, 05:15 PM
Ooh, nice. I especially like the white as snow, red as blood one.

04-22-2008, 09:18 AM
Wow, KatieV I love them! Haven't gotten them yet but will let you know ASAP!

04-22-2008, 10:44 AM
I've posted pictures in my gallery...

Vicki Z
04-22-2008, 12:18 PM
GREAT assortment of cards. LOVE your tag line on each card. Isn't it interesting how different children are affected differently by the same fairytales????

04-25-2008, 04:24 PM
I will give it a few days before sending off everyone's returns so that the few players remaining may have a chance to participate. We all know the post office, lol. If anyone has a problem with this, please let me know and I will be glad to send your returns out ASAP!!!

04-25-2008, 04:25 PM
Thank everyone for being a part of this swap!!

04-28-2008, 10:24 PM
ATCs went out today! Be on the lookout!!

05-02-2008, 08:26 PM
I got mine too!!Thanks for hosting!!

05-03-2008, 10:15 AM
Wonderful returns! Thanks to our host for "The Crows" card, too!

Thanks to Pallascat for Big Teeth -- I love Red Ridinghood and don't think I have had one of your cards come back to me before this!

Fabulous "Lost in the Forest" from Vicki Z -- outstanding 3D effect on this one!

Miss - I got your lovely "Briar Rose" card, another favorite tale of mine.

Can we do another round sometime soon?

05-03-2008, 06:30 PM
Received mine the other day-- great swap!

Liebe gre Angelika

05-07-2008, 09:13 AM
you are most welcome, irma!

05-08-2008, 08:19 AM
mine are amazing! irma's "marchen froschknonig," joey's "little red cap," bunnie's "godfather death." yummy!

wudwooda's "snow white" is amazing, too! :D i didn't expect a return for my host gift, but how cool!

05-08-2008, 11:15 AM
My Grimm's fairytales are here,, wow! Thanks to Wudwooda, LavenderLizard, VickiZ, Amyfaerie for wonderfully creepy cards!

05-08-2008, 10:55 PM
I know! All the cards I got for this swap were awesome! Not a bad one in the bunch! You guys are really awesome! Thank you all again for being a part of this swap!

05-10-2008, 12:16 PM
I was interrupted leaving rep points last week, so I am leaving them now. Hopefully I don't repeat anything! Thanks to our great host, and to Irma for the gorgeous Snow White card, Wudwooda for the frog prince, Vicki Z for Rapunzel (who definitely looks like she'd be craving fruit!), and Moss for Snow White's magic mirror.

Vicki Z
05-11-2008, 12:16 AM
Ohhhh, so you are the one who got Rapunzel. She was such FUN to make. LOVE the original versions of the Grimm stories MUCH more than the "cleaned up" varieties.

05-11-2008, 07:35 PM
Me too! Zelinsky did a storybook version that was much closer to that original one...have you seen it? Great illustrations.

05-13-2008, 09:09 AM
And again, the librarian comes out, Lavender! :) I think there is something still magical in the originals that the cleaned up ones take a bit away from. But the book Lavender is speaking of has beautiful illustrations! I'd definitely eye it over or amazon it by title and flick through a page or two. This was such a popular theme! I might have to do it again!!

Vicki Z
05-13-2008, 10:48 AM
Oh, yes, you could DEFINITELY do this theme again. There are not only hundreds of stories, but each story has tons of potential pictures.

Do you have a book title for Zelinsky? I found Rapunzel and Hansel and Gretel by Zelinsky, but they look like single stores, not a book of stories so perhaps I am looking at the wrong thing.

05-13-2008, 01:14 PM
Nope, those are the right ones--his Rapunzel is packaged alone. It either won the Caldecott or was a Caldecott honor book. He didn't do a collection, just the single stories. But his Rapunzel, like the original, has trouble fitting her clothes...

Vicki Z
05-13-2008, 03:47 PM
I just bought Rumpelstiltskin and Hansel and Gretel. Rapunzel was out of stock, but I ordered it. You are right, the illustrations are phenomenal!
Thanks for the tip!!

05-14-2008, 09:15 AM
Shoot, I don't even have Rumpelstiltskin! I will have to look that up for me. Thanks VickiZ...and be on the look out for another one of these. I think I will do a sequel next!!

Vicki Z
05-14-2008, 09:55 AM
Oh, the Rumpelstiltskin is awesome. The little man (Rumpy) is a big-hat, bug-eyed little creep. (Reminds me of an old boyfriend!:biglaugh:)

I love the way Zelinsky has re-written and illustrated these books. I can only find 3 currently in print, but I am on a quest!

Paul Zelinsky also did "Wheels on the Bus" and Knick Knack Paddywack" that I also bought and am using for ideas for cards that move. I ended up spending more at the bookstore than I planned to, but ALL the Zelinsky books I bought were still cheaper than going to the movies. - LOL. Thanks, LL, for the books tip. Thanks, Luna, for the follow-up.

Oh, a sequel. Yippeeeeeeeeee
*Does Happy Dance* Me, Me, I want to sign up.
What do you mean, the Swap isn't listed yet????. !!POUT!!

05-15-2008, 10:04 AM
It's up and around just waiting for lil miss VickiZ! :)

I just posted it today! I hope everyone joins again!

Vicki Z
05-15-2008, 10:43 AM
I am signed up!!
Nanner nanner nanner.
Oh boy, I had such fun with this Swap, and I already have ideas for the sequel.

05-16-2008, 09:58 AM
Well, I can't wait to see what you come up with! I know the first time was a blast! I put it as unlimited players so I do not know if I will be able to make a card for everyone like I did last time, but we will see how popular it is. We already got a few people we didn't have last time! Yippee!

Vicki Z
05-16-2008, 10:06 AM
What? HUH? But I NEED a card from you - I only have a "few". I did want to ask about your card "Girl with no hands". You didn't post any of the cards, so what did that one look like?

Oh, I told a few folks who said they were bummed about missing your first Grimm Swap that you had posted a second one, so the sign ups should be flying in

05-16-2008, 12:26 PM
LOL, sorry, my digital was out of commission for a week or so. But it's back so you won't miss them this time. I will definitely be making a few extras to give here and there, so do not worry. And depending on the size I will try to make one for every player. :) My Maiden without hands was a serene background from a car ad in a magazine that I cut out with a detailed cartoonesque version of a girl missing her hands. I used nail polish for to make some blood droplets near the bottom looking somewhat like a border for it. Not graphic and gorey, more artistic. Does that help? ;)
Can't wait to see the sign ups booming! :)
