One of my favorite photo altering methods is to use bleach to make patterns and remove bits of the photo. There are several ways to apply bleach (spraying, painting or drawing with it, using masks), and then once your photos are dry you can use them as is, or embellish further with inks, stamps, text, images, you name it! It's really hard to go wrong.

I’ve put together some step by step instructions here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/kristinized/5031747445/in/set-72157625053272954/): Basically you use a small spray bottle squirt bleach on a photo, let set for a few seconds to a minute depending on how much color you want removed, then blot with paper towel, rinse and let dry! This is such an easy technique, but creates such fun textures and patterns! You can also use a bleach gel pen, or apply bleach in different ways (like pour or dip your photo into the bleach); and you can use it on color or black and white photos. Make sure to bleach your photos in a safe, well ventilated space near a sink (I use my bathroom counter). I don’t wear gloves when doing this, but it’s not a bad idea to protect your hands or even wear a mask if you’re especially sensitive.

INSTRUCTIONS:
• Each card must measure 2.5 inches x 3.5 inches, no exceptions.
• Each card should start with an original photograph YOU took within the past year. Please have photos professionally printed or print yourself using photo paper (no printing photos onto cardstock please, or the technique won't work), and then mounted on to a sturdy base. [edit, players are not having luck using photos printed at home, for best results use store printed photos]. Make sure your photos are in focus, and use the same criteria as when reviewing your own drawn or collaged cards.
• A bleaching technique must be used on each photo.
• Flat mixed media? Yup, and I mean it. Please don’t use 3-D items like brads, foam tape, beads, etc because they can cause your cards to get stuck and ripped in postal machines. Please also respect copy right, if you're not sure an image is copy right free/free use then it's best not to use it.
• Make sure your real name and AFA user id is LEGIBLY printed somewhere on the back of your cards. If I can’t match it up you may get one of your own cards back accidentally.

MAILING:
US players please send a long #10/business sized SASE. If you don’t have a business sized envelope just send a mailing label and postage.

Players outside the US please send a printed/typed address label. I can cover post for the first 5 international players, otherwise please send $1US or equal amount in US stamps.

MISC IMPORTANT WHATNOTS:
The usual site guidelines apply, any cards that do not follow the swap instructions or are falling apart will be returned in the player’s SASE.

When you receive your returns, please leave an iTrader for me and reps for the artists. I will leave iTraders for players before I mail returns, please send me a PM if you need an iTrader earlier (to make the requirements for a PAT for example).

Please PM me when you need my address, you will get a response faster than posting to the thread.

I've done bleaching in the past with photos that I had developed at Longs. and I got some fun results. But now we only print our own photos with the computer and a home printer. I tried a couple of things this afternoon and for me the results were not as fun as in the past. For professionally developed film, the bleach removes the blues and greens. For my home-printed ones, either nothing happened or it got a little lighter.
I will check back later when the eye candy starts being posted.

I'll take a look at that link, thanks for letting me know.

Many stores have an online photo processing system, if you want to try that. You can easily upload photos to their website, and then go to th store to pick up the photos or have them mailed to your house. It's how I print all my photos. I use Walgreens, but lots of places do it: Walmart, Target, CVS, most "drug" type stores... you can also take your memory card in and choose what photos you want.

I upload to Winkflash (http://winkflash.com/), and order prints. They are usually 6-8 cents per print, plus minimal shipping. Good quality pictures, too. They are running a special right now: 50 free 4x6 prints for 99 cent shipping on your first order. There is a code on the homepage for it.

http://cat-sidh.net/Tutorials/alteredphotos.html

-the artist dips the photo in water first, then in a bleach solution. It gives a little bit different look!

I painted bleach onto my stamps and let them sit on the photo for a while. I hope I don't ruin my stamps, they seem to be okay so far as I wash them right away after use.

I've recently used (undiluted) bleech on some of my stamps (red rubber ones) as well and just made sure I rinsed them off well after I was done stamping with the bleech. I had seen the bleechstamping on a tutorial online, otherwise I don't think i had thouht of it to begin with. But since I knew others did it, I wasn't too scared bout it messing up my stamps hehe. I couldn't see any difference to the structure of the rubber, also not after seveal days. :)

Hadn't thought of stamping on my photos in order to create patterns .. interesting! Thanks for the idea!:)

You can also wet a paper towel with the clorox and use as you use an ink pad.

You can also wet a paper towel with the clorox and use as you use an ink pad.

Yep! That's what I used when I stamped using bleech. keeps things from getting real messy. I just place a folded paper towel on a plate and wet it with bleech (I just think I should just less thick bleach next time heh or maybe dilute it a little) and used that as a inkpad. Before stamping on my actual artpiece I'd softly stamp on a scrap of newspaper to get some of the excess bleech of my stamp. Takes a little practice to get the result you want but it's a lot of fun. :) An example of this fun little technique can be seen on the Wish upon a full moon and the I'll be Bach ATCs in my gallery.

How long are you letting the bleach sit on the photos? 10-30 seconds should be plenty, and are you rinsing the bleach off? Any bleach left on the photo will continue to eat at the image/paper - maybe that's what is happening? When you rinse the photos maybe you could try rubbing the image under the water just to make sure all the bleach is off.

I had to leave the bleach on longer than 10-30 seconds, but I am wondering if the type of bleach makes a difference? I am using the Clorox "no spill/drip" kind and it might be a tad thicker in consistency than regular bleach. Also, I found that the bleach gel pen took a while to work.

How are you applying the bleach? I used Mini Misters from Ranger, but I guess any mister would work. It is easy to control the amount and place the bleach goes into. A small amount of mist is all you need.

I've been AWOL for a bit, moving house. I'm unpacking my studio (FINALLY!) and hope to get to my cards soon! Some great work posted here so far; I'm looking forward to trying this technique. One of the links posted referred to using gel medium as a resist - anyone know if petroleum jelly (Vaseline) would work the same way?

Camilla

Hmmm, I haven't heard anything about it, but it sounds like using vaseline would work. I doubt the bleach would eat through the jelly faster than you could wipe or rinse it off.

My photo (I used a larger one and cut it into pieces) seemed to be more of a background once I had finished altering it (I used bleach, but then also some inks and a bit of spray/mist paint), so I decided to add a few other collage elements to my cards. A fun technique - about half of the reddish orange colour is from the bleach (the photo was almost entirely green to start - it was a photo of frost on some plants), the rest is ink.

Well, I've tried out a few, kristinized, and they don't seem to be gelling for me for whatever reason....
so I"m regretfully withdrawing ...I think in time for someone else to hop in...

...Some great results so far, will definitely still be checking the thread out!

working on my photos for the swap, just realized the photo paper they are printed on is water proof- so the bleach isn't doing anything... Just my luck, will have to try another photo retailer...

I finished working on my cards today. I have to admit I like some of them more than others, but it is certainly a technique to use more often. Kristinized, please pm me your address. Here are pictures of my cards:

Cool cards Wil Opio Oguta! I just sent my address so you should be all set!

Camilla - just go for it! :) I had no idea what would happen when I first tried it but found it fun to do. Try picking out a couple favorite photos, lay them out and spritz away without thinking too hard about it. See what happens :)

Thanks for the encouragement! I want to spritz, soak in bleach, use a bleach pen....maybe try alcohol inks on it afterwards....you see why I am stuck?! Too many choices to try! Good thing I ordered doubles of all my prints :)

Did you wet the photograph first, or work on it dry and then rinse?

worked on it dry and didnt rinse. when i had the effect i wanted i used a paper towel to soak up any remaining moisture and just let it air dry.

They will be going postal today
