Draw-a-thon (DAT) for March 4 - 6, 2011

I can hardly wait to play, so this is going to start Friday, March 4 at 00:01 am (Midnight) your local time and end on Sunday, March 6 at 11:59 pm your local time.

You can use mixed media or collage - for example -, too, but there must be at least one handdrawn element in your artwork.

What is an A-Thon?
It´s a marathon where you can create art, done over the same time in each time zone. This thread is going to be our craftroom, where we can meet, talk, encourage each other and admire each others art.

Please post pictures of your creations and if it´s available for trade or not. We want to see your drawings!
If you need help uploading pics, visit this thread: http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13967

Trading: is very welcome. But please DO NOT post requests for trades to the thread, this can get too confusing. Please use the Private Message (PM) System. DO NOT delete your image or post after making a trade, but edit your post instead.

Please include your name, username, location and date on all your art.

If you make a trade, please be sure to mail your art within two weeks. Communicate, if you´re running late!

Want to compliment an artist: And you will ... :D ... click the "You Rock" button unter the person´s post and leave it there.

PLEASE remember to use a kind of fixative/sealer on pencil/charcoal drawings.

Optional challenges:

Friday: Whimsical drawings
Saturday: Plants/parts of plants
Sunday: Faces

And now sharpen your pencils, grab your pens, markers or pastels and begin prepping backgrounds - but don´t start until Friday.

So who will be there to play with me this weekend?

whose knee was really a goner
but, heck she weren't blue
she had happy pills on 'er,
an' if one didn't work, she'd take two.

had just fallen on the last a thon...Doc said would take four to six weeks to heal. Does she not realize its another "a thon" week end? So here we go...three steps forward and two steps back. ; ) But I've Got my "nest" all set up.

Being the excitable youngster I am, I waited and started in on the DAT. It's about 2 AM right now, and I am so exhausted. I need to hit the hay.

But for about a half-hour I drew from a photo I had taken at a concert of the bassist of a Japanese Comic Action Punk band (or something along those lines, as they describe themselves) called Peelander-Z. His name was Peelander Red.

Not done yet. But here's a preview of my first contribution to the DAT!

BAH! Wrong photo. Hold on... Here we go! Sorry about that.

Well... this morning I drew with oil pastels (I find them hard to get much detail... fat tips), Here's the progression: crumpled the drawings,
65870
covered with Walnut Ink spray, let dry,
65871
rinsed with water and then dried between newspaper with an iron
65872

(See the details at the technique swap Joss (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18517) is hosting)

I am totally bummed that I used 20 pound printer paper. Two of them peeled a bit when ironing, and the colors are really muted. Unhappy. Next time I'll use my heavier printer paper, and the Java color of Walnut ink.

Well here are a few more DAT-ers. Since I'm fairly new to art could someone more experienced help me with a question? I love the effects many get with pens but I'm finding my colors are too intense and I lose small details and shading with my pens.(Check out my dragon for reference) Are there a certain kind of pens which give more subtle shades or is there a trick to preserving details that I don't know about? Or is it just practice?

Evalila
03-05-2011, 03:20 PM
Hmm, never heard of this brand of markers. But I guess they aren´t available here in Germany. I´m using Letraset Promarker permanent twin-tip markers (a UK-brand) and am very happy with them. There are - I think - 120 colors available.

For shading I use different colors or shades of one color. I don´t think that you can achieve a good shading with just one marker - only a very very light one if you add a second or third layer of color over the first one leaving some spaces uncovered from further layers. It´s good to have various shades of one color available for shading. And it takes some practice, too.

The shading - for me - first was achieved by trial and error :) When you have a look at my elephant in post # 73 (okay, that´s a bad picture, but I had to use my camera :twitcy:), there are 4 different colors I used for his skin ( a very light warm grey, a light cool grey, a medium warm grey and sandstone), starting with the lightest one.

Hope I could help you.

I'm using LePlume II Double ended markers

I just learned a cool technique at a Whimsical Lettering class this morning… Using an old CD as a palette, brush a bit of your marker on the palette, then pick up a bit of the color on a damp brush (a water barrel brush works perfectly!). The color comes out quite a bit more muted that the direct to paper marker. You can layer the color to get some shading, or use a slightly darker color. It worked well on both water based Tombo and LePlume pens, and permanent ink Pitt color markers. And it only takes a bit of the marker. Way cool!

I’ve used my Tombo markers as “watercolor” before, but have not used them on a glossy palette. :)

You can also try to mix the media and add colored pencil for shading. But I think not every marker takes them - you have to try it out.

What a cool idea!

Phoenix
03-05-2011, 08:34 PM
kentuckydakota, I just wanted to chime in on using markers. I'm mainly a sketch/graphite and black ink artist and have been learning as much as I can about using color. I'm progressing slowly, but you know what I found? Prismacolor markers and Prismacolor colored pencils, and a colorless blender marker (from, guess who? Prismacolor!)

I was given a 24 box set of the markers for my birthday. I bought a 12 set of colored pencils before I had even heard of the brand. They work very well together. Then I read about the colorless blender in Art Trader magazine...you should see what that can do to colored pencils in terms of shading and variation of color!

Ok, sorry to be the cheerleader for Prismacolor, but I really love them. I'm sure there are comparable brands, but I'm happy for now.

Speaking of the Whimsical Lettering class... Here are the letters I colored using the CD palette and Pitt Pens.
65948
She gave us the coolest color combination chart. I also learned the Tombo and LePlume are not colorfast... so will fade in the sun. Pitt pens do not. (Very important if you're a calligrapher like her) That's the extent of my just discovered product knowledge. :D

I'm doing a series of flowers that represent the Spring Equinox for the Ostara swap, so this challenge helped me finish the line drawings. I'll need to color them still (probably watercolor), but here they are.

They are crocus, dogwood, irises, and violets (will be purple)

Still haven't drawn anything because I was working non-stop on the pages for our children's book for class. But, now it's done. :) Might do some drawn cards tonight but I'll definitely try one or two tomorrow.

Here are the book pages and the writing for each page:

• Long, long ago, when there was no life, earth was a hollow and deserted place.

• Mother Earth was sad because she felt that her body was not beautifully clothed. She would weep and say, “Oh, how I wish I wore a precious robe.”

• The Father Sky saw Mother Earth in despair and he opened his arms wide and a mass of water rained down. It nourished the soil and green plants sprouted from the ground. Mother Earth rejoiced with her new clothing, but she still felt lonely.

• She continued to weep and say, “I hope for friends to share this land with me. The wind spirit heard her plea and he took a deep breath, which roared across the land. The dust collected and transformed into animals of every kind.

katrinabean86
03-05-2011, 09:04 PM
And here are the last two:

• Although Mother Earth was surrounded by creatures, she was still unsatisfied. She wanted a companion to appreciate her and her gifts. Then, the sun spirit heard her cry and his rays formed a dazzling rainbow. From its bountiful colors, people of every culture appeared.

• Finally, Mother Earth observed the abundance of gifts that she received and she was grateful.

I tried this tip this morning and really like the effect. Lots of variation in color-the rose in the drawing was colored with one pink pen- and I didn't lose my details. Love this technique!

What a cool idea!

Here are 3 that turned out better than the first 2. I discovered that when it came the walnut ink - less is more. A little spray, rub it in and rinse right away was the right thing to do with the pastels I used.

Me too! I love drawing realistic faces, its my favorite subject. I sat down to do some portraits, and they were going well, but then I realized that I wanted to free up and do some more whimsical drawings. I knocked off four this evening, and just need to ink and color them. I will show them tomorrow. It just so happens that I'm going to do the Whimsical/Abstract faces swap, so now I have plenty of cards for that (though I may do more; I'm hooked).

The one with the black and white sky part is iffy...not sure if I should use it for the Sky's the Limit swap or not. I'm thinking not. I'll decide tomorrow. If I don't, it will be up for trade. The flower is available as well.
