I'm from Arkansas and I miss it so much :) Missouri is NOT the south. LOl I'll see what I can get done today and then sign up if I can make some cards. Lurking for now.

03-05-2011, 05:24 PM
oooh.... now, I had to look up what constituted deep south, but now that I have looks cool.

May I join please :)

As a child, I grew up with a large cemetery adjacent to my back yard. The kids in the neighborhood knew how & where to jump the fence. We caught minnows & turtles (& snakes) for pets, dared one another to go inside the tomb of the unknown soldier, and wondered why there was a pyramid in New Orleans. There were two lagoons in the cemetery. The one in the front was my favorite because it had islands in it with palmetto palms. It looked magical. Unfortunately, it was sacrificed to widen Metaire Road... filled in & paved over. My love of the cemetery was never the same.

03-05-2011, 07:04 PM
Welcome, asharnanae! I loved your art in my last swap, so I know you'll be an asset in this one.

Lurkers are welcome. I'm just working through this idea myself, so I expect it to evolve as time passes.

03-06-2011, 01:32 AM
Oh, Kat!! That card is beeeutiful!!! I have always lived in New Mexico, so I am not sure I can do this swap....I've never even been to the South.

03-06-2011, 06:59 AM
Here are some googled links to help you out:

Oh, Kat!! That card is beeeutiful!!! I have always lived in New Mexico, so I am not sure I can do this swap....I've never even been to the South.

hehe.... i'm not even in the same country! ;)

and kat, that art is lovely :), and the story about the cemetery is sad, its always a sorrow when we loose things that have been markers of time or reinforce memories.

I was thinking of doing river steamers, plantation houses, bayou landscapes etc.. does that fit the bill for this swap?

03-06-2011, 02:04 PM
Kat sign me up....

03-06-2011, 03:36 PM
asharnanae -- I'm with you; I've created Venetian scenes without a bit of first-hand experience. All your suggestions are in line with the theme.

Welcome, chatty!

03-07-2011, 12:54 AM
Oh, kat.....big hug...I'm missing New Orleans, too. Here in Canada, we do Pancake Tuesday on Mardi Gras. Please. Pancakes got nuthin' on King Cake from Haydel's Bakery. Or Gambinos. *wiping drool off keyboard*

Sign me up, dawlin!

I may draw cypress trees. We had a big ol' one in the back yard when I was a little one, and you know how cypress trees split open at the bottom as they grow? I used to stand inside the tree and close my eyes and 'look around' from the top with the birds. Mama used to get so mad when I'd come inside. "Jean!" she'd scold. "Look at these cobwebs and dead insects in your hair!" (I didn't say I had a ton of room when I stood up inside that tree trunk, now did I?) "I don't want you going inside that tree again, you hear me?" LOL

http://blogs.dickinson.edu/archive/images/cypress-tree-small.jpg That's a way older tree with a larger opening; when I taught, we had a HUGE old cypress that had such a large opening at base that the preK and K kids would sit in side to play - about five or six could fit. One of the jobs of the duty teacher was to keep an eye on the 'tree people' when we made the yard round...

03-07-2011, 07:52 AM
Welcome, Jean! Loved your memories of the cypress trees.

03-08-2011, 01:45 AM

I have very memorable times in New Orleans, and were guests at the monastery there, so with a Jazz enthusiast husband, I have to enlist.

03-08-2011, 07:11 AM
Lurking, especially since I've never been further south on the East Coast than Maryland.

03-08-2011, 09:21 AM
Welcome, duckduckgoose & Pauline!

Art101 -- Hope you decide to join us.

03-08-2011, 04:33 PM
Lurking, especially since I've never been further south on the East Coast than Maryland.

..giggle.. you can do it. The furtherist I've been is the mid west mostly to South Dakota ..giggle.. I'm going to try, the pictures that kat shared with us scared me at first there is so much in them but oh so juicy too I can do this!

03-08-2011, 07:48 PM
chatty -- Your daring spirit is always an inspiration!

03-08-2011, 10:29 PM
Lurking for now.

03-09-2011, 07:05 PM
http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/786/small/1_dingdong.jpgmixed media: pen, marker, colored pencil, metallic gel pen

When I was growing up in New Orleans, the neighborhood boys loved ringing the doorbell to show off their latest catches. The trick was to show no suprise or fear. This card was inspired by Benji ringing the bell & asking to borrow a yardstick to measure his newly-captured snake. Yardstick says it all.

In discussing the card with my DH, I noticed that the snake is proud to be a part of this ritual.

03-12-2011, 09:12 AM
I'm still lurking, trying to decide if I can come up with ideas for cards. Googling lead me to this definition of the "Deep South": Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina.

Is that the area you have in mind? Knowing what/where I am trying focus in on (ie the area) will help me.

03-12-2011, 01:37 PM
I thought it was a New Orleans swap, since the suggestions focus on that area.

03-12-2011, 04:08 PM
I took it for the New Orleans area too...Art1o1 click on the links in the description area of this swap. Some great pictures. I'm using some of those for my inspiration since I have never been back there ..*smile*.. Of course mine going to be a whole lot simpler ..giggle..

03-12-2011, 05:22 PM
Any area of the Deep South is fine for your inspiration. My memories are New Orleans specific.

03-13-2011, 10:39 AM
Im in homegirl!!

03-13-2011, 10:51 AM
I know Kat about being homesick...we just got back from a 7 day cruise and everyone was homesick...I was too sick to even think about anything...but my 20 year old was crying the whole time , she was so homesick....I'm going to dig deep for these cards...maybe Lucky dog cart, the old huey P. Long(you know they are rebuilding it???) They have also changed the exit to the CAUSEWAY GOING nORTH...THERE IS A LARGE OVERPASS going over Veterans starting from the interstate...much better traffic flow! The northshore has completely changed in the past year...looking like Metairie now...but the shopping is better now....Love ya girl...I'll send some pics for you!!!

03-13-2011, 10:58 AM
What part of NOLA are you from? Robert...duffassett sp?....soniat streets are named after my mother-in-laws grandfather..and her father is also Robert Soniat...the Ostarlys seem to dominate the West Bank..and yes all 2 million are related..lol My mother in law graduated from Our Lady of Prompt Succor

03-13-2011, 04:46 PM
I lived on Fairway Drive, in New Orleans proper, three blocks from the parish line. It's the first side street off of Metairie Road from Canal Street, just past Metairie Cemetery.

03-13-2011, 06:10 PM
I know the area...my daughter lived near there...a couple of years ago..I'll find out exactly where

03-13-2011, 09:57 PM
Please sign me up! I'll have to use your suggestions for inspiration since I'm a born and bred Connecticut Yankee. Most of our snow is gone, but we sure could use some deep south green!

03-14-2011, 06:21 AM
Welcome, ineedtocreate!

03-14-2011, 03:50 PM
They're rebuilding the Huey Long???? Goodness, I used to white-knuckle going over that one, lol. (It's got realllllly narrow lanes!) My late great-aunt used to barrel across it (around age 80, back then); I said, "Aunt Hattie, you drive over the Huey?? It scares me so!" She said, "I don't have a problem with it. I just straddle the center line and hit the accellerator!" LOLOLOL And she did indeed HIT the accellerator, too. That was one lady with a need for speed.

I lived on Broadway and on the westbank as well.

03-14-2011, 07:25 PM
I remember learning to drive in New Orleans. The 1st 20 lessons were backing down our driveway without running over Dad's prized boxwoods. (If you hit a bush, you went back to zero. Don't pass go, don't collect $200.) The next 20 lessons were in City Park with Mother as the instructor. She was a little less harsh in her assessment. Even though I once mistook the accelerator for the brake and nearly ran into the miniature train, she gave me a pass when I corrected the error & stopped just inches short of the rail line. The next 20 lessons (Yes, I was wondering by now if I would be eligible for social security before I got my license.) were in Metairie Cemetery with Dad. There are granite obelisks at the corners of each intersection. "Square your corners" was Dad's favorite phrase during this phase of my instruction. Since I was driving the only car used by our family, I was extreemly careful.

03-15-2011, 03:29 PM
Even we New Englanders get South from time to time. I'm thinking Charleston, Savannah, St Simons island, New Orleans. Please sign me up.

03-16-2011, 06:50 AM
Welcome, CherylS!

03-16-2011, 07:52 PM
Sign me up! I'm proud to be a Georgia peach! I'm back in my beloved South after living in TX for a while! I'm thinking Savannah, St. Simons, Charleston...Okeefenokee Swamp! ha ha! However, I did finally get to visit NOLA this past summer! I loved it! So inspiring! An artist's dream!

03-16-2011, 08:01 PM
I don't personally know mangroves. But as I researched them, I found that they looked familiar, especially in the pictures with snowy egrets. I had a cousin who was/is in the Audubon Society. Over 45 years ago, he took me into the Louisiana swamps & bayous to show me the nesting grounds of egrets, herons, and eagles. It was amazing. We saw hundreds or thousands of nesting pairs of water birds and a pair of bald eagles.

03-17-2011, 07:08 AM
welcome, Catey!

03-17-2011, 05:19 PM
Sign me up. I live in South GA, just 20 mins. from the FL border.
This sounds very interesting.
Hmmm...Deep South. I'm thinkin' swamps, gators and pine trees.
Perhaps I'll draw some 'skeeters. Blasted insects will carry you off!

03-17-2011, 06:11 PM
Welcome, SMikell & Cajun King!

03-18-2011, 05:01 PM

So Beautiful!......so beautiful..*smile*..

03-22-2011, 11:38 AM
My cards are done. I did the things that I loved down south. I hope my palette isn't new englandy.
the courtyards with a fountain unknown where I took this pic. New Orleans?
the restaurants: Court of the two sisters
the live oaks with spanish moss

03-22-2011, 12:50 PM
Super! I've been to Court of Two Sisters. There's a fountain in their patio that has a similar feeling, but the proportions are a little different.

03-22-2011, 01:44 PM
I've been there too. Our table was near the fountain but I didn't take a pic. I remember getting eggs benedict.
I still have your address from prior swaps.

03-23-2011, 05:09 PM

03-29-2011, 08:20 PM
One done - I cut and pasted the original photo from a Google search, so I have no idea where in New Orleans this is, and I can't find it again.

03-29-2011, 09:57 PM
It's beautiful ineedtocreate just beautiful...

03-29-2011, 11:56 PM
The domes makes me think the old Hibernia building, but the water...don't know. The Hibernia is a bank, and it's in the downtown core, so...hmm. Confused. Do you have the link to the photo? Any clues there?

03-30-2011, 06:19 AM
ineedtocreate -- It's lovely! I think the scene is from City Park, but I can't find a picture with the dome and the bridge together.

03-30-2011, 07:26 AM
Add me Kat this looks fun!

03-30-2011, 04:31 PM
Please add me,I'll be back from cheery London in time to make my cards. Y'all hear from me later.

03-30-2011, 04:37 PM
Thank you all! It has no link. I googled so many things one night and cut and pasted the results on a word document. I don't know why some retained links, but this one didn't. I guess we'll just have to wonder...

03-31-2011, 05:32 PM

Left itrader and you rocks for the cards received!

Thank you! :cute:

05-11-2011, 07:00 PM
Thanks to each of you for the feedback. This swap had the added benefit of changing my rating. Finally!! Last summer I achieved "kat is a grand poobah". It was a big milestone for me because the upgrades happened frequently when I first started out ... 50 then 100 rep pts. By the time I achieved that rating it took 500 rep pts. But after the next 500... nothing :nah: It has taken me 1000 rep pts to change labels. But I much prefer my new label, & I'll be happy here for as long as it takes to make it to the next level.

05-12-2011, 11:37 AM
LOL Mine says I should simply stop getting rep at this point!!!! I had no idea, as I never think to click on the rep to check the various labels, but I guess it's a head's up to folks not to rep me anymore...or a reflection of the limit of the system's creativity, lolol.

05-12-2011, 11:44 AM
Oh, Jean! That is funny. I haven't made it that far yet.

05-12-2011, 09:09 PM
This was such a fun swap and I received the most lovely cards you all...I received from ineedtocreate, momoruth, CherylS, kat ...thank you! ..smile..
