View Full Version : Mosaic style - Due April 24th

Jo_M
03-09-2011, 12:15 PM
Swap due date: IN MY HANDS BY April 24th, 2011 - no exceptions (sorry, being really strict about this because late senders ruin it for everyone else)
No sign up by or withdrawal date but please just let me know.
Number of cards: 3 for 3
Number of participants: Unlimited
MEDIUM: Collage, hand painted/drawn or digital. NO EMBELLISHMENTS. These cards should be flat (other than the layers of a collage).

Make 3 DIFFERENT cards featuring a mosaic style image.

Some ideas...

Cards can have a "picture" theme such as these:

http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/2876/sun2mosaicoc36005w.jpg

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/9046/mosaicw.jpg

http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/2773/frogmosaic2.jpg

Or be abstract such as this:

http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/2158/glassmosaic.jpg

(These were just examples googled off the Internet).

The choice of theme is up to you.

Please make sure you adhere to the following rules...

Rules:
*Cards should be standard size: 2.5" x 3.5"
*Cards should be sent in plastic sleeves
*All cards must be original and each card should be different
*Digital art is acceptable
*Be creative, have fun and do your best work

Mailing:
*PM me for my address when your cards are ready.
*Include your name, user name, location, swap name legibly written on back of cards

*UK: Please send a SAE with large letter stamp.
*International: Please send an address label for returns (this is NOT optional!) and either loose UK stamps to value of 2.00 or $2 to cover postage. DO NOT STICK STAMPS TO ENVELOPES!

If you are joining in with my other swap, Tears of a Clown (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18634), and wish for me to send you both sets of returns in one envelope to save double postage costs, please let me know.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

Did I read the instructions correctly - I can just DRAW all those pesky joins between the mosaic pieces?
oh joy, oh bliss - I won't have to worry about finding little pieces of paper stuck to me for days!:twitcy:

Jo_M

YES LOL!!!!

If you have the patience to draw them all! I'd prefer to be covered in bits of paper haha!

What exactly is an embelishment? Can they be thick but flat? How about standard mosaic materials. (IE. See the tiny bits of glass tile on your green example>)

Jo_M

Basically anything that is higher than a layer of flat paper for a collage. No charms, no buttons, no gems, no ribbons etc: nothing that rises from the card.

The only thing on your card should be either paper, ink, paint or a stamped image. Hence the rule that this swap is for hand-drawn or painted, collage or digital art only.

Edit: No, no glass or tiles please. The images are examples of mosaic *styles*, not to be used as a guideline for materials to use in a mosaic.

Well ok then. I'll have to keep thinking since I went to my standby. But there is a lot of stuff I can use in my studio. Might make it more fun this way, since I don't have my usual. Thinking outside of the box

So, looking at the examples given in the opening, is the idea to take little pieces of paper and arrange them like mosiac tiles would be in a "real mosaic"? Then to glue the little pieces of paper onto an ACS blank, with spaces between the pieces of paper to represent where grout would be in a "real mosiac"? (Or as another option, to do the same technique but using a digital picture.)

Edit - Oh.... I just checked some of the completed cards, and see that some artists are "drawing" a mosaic design. And some are using digital art to make a mosaic-like design, then printing.

I wish more people had posted their completed cards, I'm still unsure of what "mosaic" means in this swap.

You can choose either methods - if you want to collage them like in your first example, that's fine (I did mine in a collage), or if you want to hand-draw or digitally draw them, that's fine too.

The pieces of the collage need not be so tiny so as to be difficult to work with.

I loved all the little sticky pieces. My favorite medium is glass mosaics with the same little pieces. Just did a mosaic of eden that's 24x24 inches. Each leaf on the tree is an individual piece of hand cut glass. Yes, I do leave my studio with pieces stuck to my cloths and little cuts on my hands, but I find it so relaxing to do.

Well I did some experimenting today, and am happy with my cards, so I'd like to enter this swap please. I cut pieces of painted watercolor paper into shapes, and glued them down into mosaic-like patterns, with pink "grout" lines. It was a great way to use some of my left over watercolor scraps. [As usual, the actual cards are much brighter in person than the scan shows.]
