Anne: I'm thrilled to have you. All you need is a path of some sort on the card....rocks, a road, bricks, dirt, sand, footprints human or animal. It can be whimsical, hard scape, pastural...anything you can come up with. The path doesn't have to dominate....just try to insert one somewhere.

Pfifer80, other ways to come up with ideas is to do an online search, or look through old magazines (travel ones are good because they use great photos), postcards (I collect interesting postcards to use for painting ideas), and calendars that have photos.

Leaf-Cutter Ants marching home along their paths with their leaf bits.

Pochadiva
03-25-2011, 12:35 PM
Thanks, I was amazed at the ant paths I saw in tropical jungles years ago, and was thinking of other animal paths (can you guess here that I like animals?) when I remembered these little workers' paths. They haul leaves ALL day. Apparently they grow a special fungus on them or something to feed the larva. I just learned that today. ;)

Love learning new facts about nature. We live in an amazing world! I finished a card for the swap! It doesn't have a large path but it's there.

Pochadiva

Great cards, ladies! There are so many paths/trails and we see them everyday everywhere but we're not always looking. This makes me look a bit more closely at my surroundings. I almost have 3 finished but I'm not even started on the
4th..I'll get there, though. Fun swap, Pochadiva:)

OO that last one is such a cool perspective. Looks like you're laying on the ground. I'm glad to see that some of the paths can be subtle to the picture. I have a couple where the path is more incidental than focal. I like both kinds. Your cards are lovely Pochadiva!

Very cool! I was hoping someone would use that idea. I thought footsteps in the sand would be a neat concept!

Finally got my scanner running again - thought I would post another one of my "Along the Beaten Path" cards . . .

I know it isn't a "conventional" path - but I love the idea of finding paths that we don't usually see.....

I've been fighting some sort of stomach grumble & haven't been checking in...Sorry. I'm loving what i'm seeing! There are so many different paths that it's hard to know which one to follow. LOL!
Here are 3 of mine..I'm working on the 4th one:):

Ok- I went a little deep for the last path. It's the musical path. It's a path that's been passed down in our family. My parents passed it to me, and I passed it to my children. When I heard my son recently playing "Unchained Melody" on the piano (definitely not his generations music) I realized he'd been set on a longer musical path than many his age.
Hope that works for a path.:cute:

Well, I made 2 cards & couldn't decide which to post for my 4th card so I made the mistake of asking my DH. He thinks they are both too "radical". BLAH!!! I have to agree that neither one is a normal path, but a little "radical" might be fun. I'll ponder this a bit longer:)

That was the first time I had ever seen DH and of course I thought of designated hitter. So then I thought maybe it meant designated husband which might be another term for significant other.....all I know is mine is a dear husband for putting up with all of my artwork supplies all over the place. LOL!

Question: why isn't there a "You Rock" button in this thread?? I like to post reps when I see great cards...even before the swap-out. Am I missing something here?:huh:

I think there is something wrong with the system. I checked my control panel this morning and none of my rep comments were listed at the bottom.. I'm going to check the forum.

Pochadiva
04-01-2011, 01:25 PM
From what I gather, the administrators decided to end the rep system because it caused the site to run too slowly. They'd rather keep the gallery than the rep points. I'm trying to get confirmation that this is permanent rather than an April Fool's joke!

LindyLu
04-01-2011, 06:55 PM
Well, if they did it to speed up the system ...it isn't working. I've had a terrible time moving around on the site today..maybe this is part of the joke???? I forgot it was April Fool's Day. All will be normal tomorrow, you can bet on it.

kentuckydakota

Need an Addy. Finally finished. This for me was the hardest swap to do yet. Might go back to only whimsey after this. I learned a lot working on these. Read a watercolor book a few days ago front to back because I wasn't happy with what was coming out on paper. But I'm pleased with them, hope you are. I'll put them in my gallery later

My cards are done. Addy please, to make sure I have the current one. I had a hard time making myself stop putting in more and more details, so that the "path" did not get lost in amongst the greenery! :)

Here are my watercolored cards.
#A - A walk through a bamboo forrest
#B - Summer green, with branching tree is on the left side of the path
#C - Winter leafless trees, with early spring's arrival bringing a flowered path
#D - Summer green, with branching tree is on the right side of the path

I am so happy I was able to enter this swap! It gave me a chance to play with my oils, which I love.

I made my cards today, but it will be 2 to 3 weeks until I can send/post them, as they will take a while to dry.

Pochadiva
04-16-2011, 12:16 AM
I'm super anxious to see them! I'll be on pins and needles until then. Thanks again. I'm sure everyone in the swap is as pleased as I am that you were able to play.

kentuckydakota
04-16-2011, 12:25 AM
definitely! I've never used oils but love the look of them. I look forward to seeing them as well. Does it really take weeks to set? Maybe that's why I haven't used them.

SunTrade
04-16-2011, 01:52 AM
Well it actually depends. Oils are very moody! Depends on thickness, surface, and temperature! There is some stuff to speed the drying process, but I do not favor them much.

If I apply them really thin and go on top of them with ink, just like in the watercolors, they only take 2 to 3 days.

But the cards I made for the swap have lots of texture, so the paint is a little thick. Those take between one to two weeks depending on the weather. Since I am in Texas and is already starting to get really hot, they might only take a week.

I love oils, they are so creamy, and the colors are true to nature. I personally do not like the plastic feel of acrylics.

I finish my cards! They are on canvas paper. I will let them rest a few more days before I send, so they oils cure, even though they seem to be dry to the touch. Hope you all like them.

I hate it that when you scan them the light goes through and shoes all the dimples. But they look better in person! OR at least I think so. :)

Hey everyone, don't forget we have new US postage increases!

Price changes of note for retail customers include the following:

First-Class Mail letters (1 oz.) remain unchanged at 44 cents,
First-Class Mail additional ounces increase to 20 cents,
Postcards will cost 29 cents,
Letters to Canada or Mexico (1 oz.) increase to 80 cents, and
Letters to other international destinations will remain unchanged at 98 cents.

This affects swaps, especially, because instead of the old 61 cents (for mailing 3-4 cards), it is now 64 cents postage for each additional ounce. Players, if you are enclosing a SASE, don't forget to add 3 cents more (.61 + .03 = the new 64 cents)

& @ pocahadiva-I knew I was going to have to find it again! Called Negative Trees, the how-to guide can be found under "Forum", then "Members Forum", then "Art Discussions", then the sub-forum under that title of "Articles and How To Guides", and then look for "Negative Trees and how to build them," posted by bonsaigirl.

Thanks to Art101 for the postal increases update!

Baybird.....Thanks for the information and where to find the technique. I might try to demo this at a future local atc club meeting!

Thanks kentuckydakota, yes, my first attempt, and after re-reading the instructions, my second attempt hopefully will have more depth & texture. It is a user-friendly technique, I think.

That's encouraging. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet but I definitely will after I get back from my trip.
