Mike Judge Tribute Swap, due May 27, 2011

The Basics:
Due Date: In my hands by May 27, 2011. I am swapping out over the US holiday weekend and mailing on May 31, so please plan ahead.
Sign up by date: Until we are full
Drop date: None, but please be considerate of those who are on the waiting list and let me know as soon as possible if you plan to drop so that another player can have your slot
Number of Items: 3 for 3
Number of participants: 30
Media: Hand drawn or painted (some mixed/collage ok, but main elements should be original)
International players: Up to 5, and I will cover postage

Theme:
Hey, did you hear? (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31749_162-20030590-10391698.html) New episodes of Beavis and Butt-head are coming this summer! In honor of this truly momentous occasion, I’m announcing a Mike Judge tribute swap. Three hand drawn/painted cards from any of Mike Judge’s body of work – that’s Beavis and Butt-head, King of the Hill, Office Space, Idiocracy, Extract, and (if you were one of the four people on the planet who saw it) The Goode Family. The cards don’t necessarily have to depict specific scenes, but should reflect the spirit of the original.

So, I’m gonna go dig up a few more pieces of flair, polish off the red Swingline (heh heh, he said polish), crack open a can of Brawndo (heh heh, he said crack), and hang out by the Maxi-Mart while you all put together some great pieces of art.

Cards:
- All cards should be standard 3.5” x 2.5”
- All cards should be sent in clear plastic sleeves. Please use minimal tape when you mail your cards.- Please put your user ID, the title of your card, and the title of this swap (“Mike Judge Tribute Swap”) on the back of all cards. A real name, date and location would be nice too.
- Please submit three different cards.
- Please consider quality – you should create cards that you would be proud to display in your own collection. For this swap, the main elements of the card should be hand drawn or painted; please refrain from submitting digital prints, photocopies, photographs, stickers, and bulky embellishments.
- Each card should be unique and original. While variations on a theme are fine, please don't submit three cards that are almost exactly the same.
- Host cards on the theme topic or extra postage to help cover international returns are appreciated, but not required.

Mailing & Postage:
- PM me for my address when your cards are finished and ready to mail.
- All participants should include a self addressed, full-sized mailing label.
- All US participants should include 64 cents postage (this reflects the “nonmachinable surcharge” imposed by the USPS).
- I will provide envelopes for all swap returns and will cover postage for the first five international participants.
- Additional International players are very welcome to join but should include funds to cover postage (usually $1, but PM me to be sure)

Returns:
I will post to this thread and leave iTraders as I receive cards. Please leave an iTrader for me and Rep Points for card creators after you receive your cards in June.

Players:
1. SunTrade -received
2. AnnD -received
3. Russell -received

I don't know, Nanner. That flair looks like the bare minimum to me. You do want to express yourself, don't you?

Russell
03-22-2011, 02:03 PM
I'd like to join Joe, but only if I can keep my stapler, and I don't care if youlay me off either, because if you move my desk one more time then I'm quitting, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were married, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire...

AnnD
03-22-2011, 02:05 PM
Okay, Russell. Just keep passing the cake so everyone can have a piece.

I really need to see Office Space before I can sign up. (Thus saith the embarrassed Mike Judge fan who never saw it.) And I'm working on a way to illustrate those moments when Butthead slaps the crap outta Beavis, which you can watch on repeat here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHQ1oIvnZA4

Welcome to Griffkeeper, rockinrobin, duckduckgoose, and Threshold90. Calluna, feel free to jump in once you have witnessed the awesomeness that is Office Space.

AnnD
03-23-2011, 10:18 AM
Here is a bit of random, meaningless Office Space trivia: After graduation, my college roommate dated Michael Bolton - not the no-talent ass clown who wins Grammys, but the one who gets criminal ideas from bad Superman sequels. I believe that puts me . . . two degrees from Mike Judge!

Russell
03-23-2011, 10:48 AM
Okay, Russell. Just keep passing the cake so everyone can have a piece.

But Ann, the ratio of people to cake is too big.

joes lines
03-23-2011, 01:11 PM
Six degrees of Office Space... So my brother-in-law used to hang out with the guy who played Samir. Which means that I too am two degrees (or would it be three - are brother-in-laws first or second degree relations?) degrees from Mike Judge and Ann and I are something like four or five degrees from each other.

Math, you might realize by now...not my strong suit. Even the single digit functions.

Russell
03-23-2011, 02:03 PM
And since I live in close proximity to Ann that makes me like Mike Judge's neighbor's paperboy.

AnnD
03-23-2011, 02:15 PM
Joe, my husband is extremely good at math, and he assures me that you and your brother-in-law are first-degree relations. In Six Degrees of Office Space terms, it's your brother-in-law / Samir / Michael Bolton / Julie Murphy / me, which separates us (as I understand the game) by four. But since I just ate cute for breakfast this morning, we might have to subtract one and make it three.

Russell, since we have a bad ratio, we might need to rock it Birthday Style and have three desserts.

Also, he didn't get a paper this morning.

And he's mad.

themuppet
03-23-2011, 02:53 PM
I was nearly frightened off by all this complicated math!

But my pretty red stapler and I would love to play.

I was originally going to just lurk... until I saw your Cornholio card and nearly peed.

I finish my cards. As some of you may be aware, artist are not very good mathematicians, and I made 5 cards. :goofy: I loved this swap, and probably could have made lots more. One of them will be in my gallery for trade, just have not decided which one just yet.

I made 3 from BB and 2 for KH. There is an episode that starts when Beavid and Butthead are watching a star trek episode and Beavis is trying to make the Vulcan salute. Another one when he starts feeling on soda, and then he becomes cornholio, and the third one when they go in the pharmacy and he takes his blood pressure thinking is a ride!

Hope you like my cards.

Here's a question for you, Joe. Since this is a tribute swap, would you prefer that I try to draw exactly like Mike Judge, or is it okay to draw his creations in my own style? (Any answer is acceptable, and no matter what you say, I promise not to set the building on fire.)

AnnD

I absolutely LOVE Jason Bateman! I watched the American version of *State of Play* over the weekend, and he was good even in that. I refuse to see Juno, though.

How would you rate *Extract*?

[Puts on Ebert hat]

Meh.

[Takes off Ebert hat]

Seriously, it had a couple of funny parts but wasn't particularly memorable on the whole. It's a completely subjective difference, but I think the last half hour of the movie crossed from black comedy territory into mean-spirited territory.

I can just imagine the dialogue in the Avatar card...

Butthead: Whoa, Beavis, we're doing it.
Beavis: Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna score.
And then they both sing Iron Man.

Awesome job.

I love the idea of this swap and am enjoying the pics and postings - I'd join if I could draw better. I fall asleep to King of the Hill re-runs every night and this morning I woke up sounding like Bobby Hill! I'm not channeling him or anything, I just have a cold. Great work everyone! :~]

nanner
05-03-2011, 10:01 PM
The in-thread Ebert was great. Our netflix choices have been blah as of late (which equals, fall-asleep-while-watching.) Any GOOD recommendations are welcome.

Nice cards Griff!

Jazzie, King of the Hill is the M. Judge work that I'm least familiar with, but probably better to fall asleep to than crappy netflix?

We really loved *Up in the Air*, Nan. And if you ever rent TV shows on Netflix, I highly recommend *Waking the Dead* (a British cold case drama) and *Wire in the Blood* (a British profiler).

Thanks for the recommendations Ann-flix (queue updated accordingly!) We really need to get a way to stream our netflix. Our equipment is too antiquated, and I hate re-buying something we have that works. Technology!

I LOVED the Firefly/Serenity series. For those Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vamp) fans out there, it was clever, funny, interesting...and I'm a "browncoat" (fan) hoping for this to become a cult classic that gets back on the air someday.

Jazzie-dear, when life settles down (and I'm not AT WORK at flippin' 11 pm), we are gonna have to have an art playdate!

Arivanna's cards got here yesterday, so I was able to swap out. Some awesome Mike Judge cards are now winding their way through the US Postal Service and should be in your collective hands by the end of the week.

Because there was a small group that participated in this swap, I was able to get everyone an extra from me - either an original on theme card or a copy.

Itraders should be updated for everyone who sent me cards, but let me know if I missed anyone.

Sorry for the delay in your nifty gifty hosty prezzie, Joe. For you, to say THANKS for this fan-tab swap!

I altered both sides of an old (perhaps priceless antique) wooden pull toy. The kind where you pull the string at the bottom and the arms and legs pop up. Did it to the tune of Ziggy Stardust with some acrylics, ink and embellishments. Kept the arms and legs in their original condition. He'll be heading to (your) Suffragette City soon!

Oh, Nanner, that is frickin' spectacular! I can't wait to see him in person.

We had front row seats to a Bowie concert in 1995. This was when he was on tour with Nine Inch Nails. The concert was in Cleveland (Trent Reznor's stomping grounds), so when NIN left the stage all the rich hipsters in the front cleared out. We asked if we could move up front and security let us. We were close enough to touch him (or get dripped on; but Bowie, being a semi-divine being does not sweat). My wife to this day insists that he winked at her. Best concert ever.

So, that's my long winded way of saying that this is awesomely appropriate and cool - THANKS!

So pleased you dig him!

Would have LOVED to have not-got-dripped on by Bowie himself. Jealous of that proximity x 100!
So stoked your wife got a ;)...and I'm sure she did.

Best concert ever. Indeed!

AnnD

Sniff.

I saw Bowie on the Glass Spider tour, and he wasn't sweating on me either, mainly because it is difficult to not sweat on someone who is a mile and a half away from you.

Great story, Joe!
