View Full Version : LIST: 1:1 Japanese Moleskine Exchange
ArtsyLady
04-25-2011, 02:12 PM
This thread is for setting up PERSONAL trades with other members,
for Japanese Moleskine book pages.
All books need to be...Japanese Album styled...zigzag folded 3.5x5.5 pages
Participants need to decide ahead of time how many pages will be completed in the other participants journal
You can exchange journals individually here - by arranging private trades with anyone posting here.
This thread is a good way to get yourself oriented to the Art of Moleskine Journals before making the long term commitment of a Moley group exchange and the timetable of mailings..
Here's how it works?
You create your ad listing your journal and what you want. Others read your ad and contact you to arrange a trade.
The two of you work out the details any way you wish. You can choose which themes you are comfortable making. You do NOT have to swap with everyone who asks, choose the exchanges that are most mutually beneficial for each person involved but please remember to be gracious and mind your manners if someone is not interested in trading at that moment.
How to post an 'ad' for Japanese Moleskine journal exchanges:
1. THEME: Declare your theme/topic that you want for your book!
2. Consider what you want or don’t want in your journal (theme, mediums, etc.)
- DO's: Are there any art techniques you want to encourage - or exclude?
- DONT's: \Use profanity, art that is suggestive, political?
3. LOCATION: Decide whether you are willing to accept an international trade or want to keep the mailings within your own country to keep expenses down.
4. Any other COMMENTS?
Then, just post your ‘ad’ here as an invitation to other artists to trade pages with you! REMEMBER, to come back and delete your 'ad' when you are done with your book!
How to CHOOSE a book to create pages for:
-Everyone is free to browse the ad listings. When you find one that interests you and you are comfortable with the theme/mediums/limits set, send a private message to the person and arrange the trade details between the two of you, just as you would for any 1:1 trade. That’s all there is to it!
-You do NOT have to swap with anyone who asks, choose the swaps that are most mutually beneficial for each person involved, but please keep in mind to be friendly and gracious.
-Make sure to leave feedback when it arrives, PM your partner when you send, Remember Communication is vital

(Unfortunately, I will be unable to do any moleskine trades until further notice. Please consider this ad "on hold." I'll try to remove this notice when things get straightend out. Thanks!)
1: THEME: Colors of Music
2: DO'S: Create a music themed spread in one of the colors of the rainbow. I'd like the book, when fully open to be a continuous spectrum, so I'll mark off where each color should go and each artist can pick where in the book/what available color they want to work on.
DON'T: Work your color out of order - it's OK if there are blank spaces between you and the last artist.
3: Location: Phoenix, AZ. Can only ship within the US right now. I'll update here if that changes.
4: #pages: 3 page spread

Question - is everyone decorating the covers/first few pages of their own journals, the way it's usually been done in the regular moleskine trades on this site? If so, can anyone recommend a good way to prep the cover for paint, etc?

I am doing the sign in page and the first three pages...up in the air on whether I am decorating the cover...I may wait until the book is finished so I can coordinate colors..will see...with my last book I lightly sanded the cover before applying a coat of Liquitex high-gloss acrylic enamel...(Glossies)...I have not seen it since it began it's journey 6months ago so I'm not sure how it is holding up....

It's when you do your work on other paper, sized to the moley, and then "tip" or glue it in. Or at least that is my understanding of it. :)

I thinking of starting a new book, with the theme of Vintage Horror (Elvira, Vincent Price, Bela Lugosi, the original Night of the Living Dead, old B horror movies, old ghost stories/legends like la llorona, the hook, bloody mary, or folklore, etc). Doesn't have to literally be any a specific movie or character, as long as the vintage vibe is present. Campy layouts welcome.
1: THEME: Vintage Horror
2: DO'S: Would love the layouts to overlap and flow from one to another
DON'TS: no tip ins, no 3-d materials that make the pages bulky (foam tape, brads, eyelets, etc)
3: LOCATION: Minnesota, USA
4: #pages 2-3 pages spread
5: COMMENTS: dark and horror more than welcome, light and happy welcome too. drawn, painted, flat mixed media, or altered photos.

would love to get into moleys. I have bought a couple of journals and am ready to go!
theme: celebrating women in all their glory.
Dos: hand drawn, pen and ink, markers, colour pencils, some collage can be added but want the main part of the pages to be hand drawn. keep it flat. use your creativity
don'ts: no stickers or raised embellishments. don't limit your imagination.
location: N Ireland, willing to post anywhere.
pages - 3 page spreads
comments: please don't glue pages to the book. I want a journal that celebrates women of all ages, shapes and sizes in all aspects of life and time - let your inner woman loose on the pages!!!

Does this have the same itrader/member-length requirements as the other moley swaps? If not I'll edit this post with my ad :) Thanks!
Edit: Thanks miss for the answer!
1: THEME: Dinosaurs and/or librarians
2: DO'S: Have fun and make them awesome. I would prefer hand-drawn/painted. Mixed media is fine too, but I don't want straight-up collage.
DON'TS: Pure collage, overly bulky/chunky. Nudity, religion, politics, gore. I'm not sure how you could make a dinosaur or librarian over PG-13 but please don't :P A lack of inspiration/effort is also a don't. Only accept a trade with me if you know you have a great idea and would enjoy it ;)
3: LOCATION: US, prefer posting domestically, but I may consider internationals depending on my finances at the time. Just ask, I don't bite.
4: #pages I'm flexible on this. I'm totally new to moleys so I don't know what I'm most comfortable with.
5: COMMENTS: Please be patient with me while I figure this out, and let me know (nicely!) if I do something totally wrong :P
gingasaurus, since these are just one on one trades you would have to arrange with another person, I don't think there are any restrictions. :)

2: DO'S: Can be Collage or HD/HP or combination of the two. Lots of color and interesting background scenery.
DON'TS: No gore please.
3: LOCATION: USA but will ship internationally.
4: #pages 2 or 4
5: COMMENTS: I've never done one of these either so be patient.

2: DO'S: Be creative and make it COLORFUL :)
DON'TS: make it too bulky. No pure collage - the hound should be HP/HD :)
3: LOCATION: USA is preferred, but I'm willing to post anywhere
4: #pages: 2
5: COMMENTS: I have plenty of greyhound pictures if you need inspiration :)

I have been following this moley theme and reading what you all have to say. To the point I am nervous about not doing the right thing. I dont know how to handle mythical subjects, maybe because I lack the interest in it, also dark subjects I would not be able to paint/draw, cannot do the music theme with people, but can do landscape, seascape, birds flowers etc. So basically mine would have to be nature and happy scenes. Some of you appear to be so talented, but guess we all have our own area of talent. Am curious to get your response to this posting.

Hi you all,
I'm lurking for now. In the meantime I've been playing with a japanese moly and have been painting in it with watercolors, applied with a bit less water than usual. Not quite dry brush, but not all juicy for great blended washes, either. So I was wondering about trying for that kind of trade. My next experiments are going to be gouache and some holbein irodori traditional japanese watercolors, which work drier than other tube watercolors.
Also, in regular japanese moly trading, do players usually fill both sides of the moly, or just one side of the folded scroll? I can see how, if it is two sides, working in any way with even damp watercolor brushes might disturb a painting on the reverse side.
While I'm learning these things, I'll just lurk, enjoy, get my wishes etc statement ready, and if watercolors or gouache won't work, eventually invest in some tria or copics.
Thank you for starting this innovative way to trade molys!

This is what I bought is it the right journal?
The Moleskine Cahier [kaa yAy] Pocket Plain Notebooks are offered as a set of 3 notebooks with plain (blank) pages, each with a heavy duty cardboard cover with visible stitching on the spine that matches the cover color. Each Pocket Plain Cahier is 3.5 x 5.5 inches with 64 acid-free pages (32 leaves), with the last 16 sheets detachable by means of a micro-perforated edge. Inside the back page there is a spacious pocket for notes or clippings. I have not seen an accordion style in our area.

Just received my new Japanese Moley (the one with the 60 pages harmonica folded - hope that it's the one you all use?) and I would love to join in the fun (missing all the moley swaps that there are and have been, this looks like a good sollution).
1: THEME: Anything Japanese (geisha, samurai, martial arts are my favourites but I also love Japanese landscapes, Oriental paintings, sushi - you name it - have a ball!!)
2: DO'S: I love hand-painted/hand-drawn work - if you can add a haiku that would be great, otherwise a few lines or poem on Japan will be welcome too (not a writer? Without text will be fine too)
DON'TS: Please no bulky embellishments (my moley needs to travel long distances so please limit yourself to drawing and an occassional collage).

Question. I have a regular sketchbook moleskine I have been sketching in, but I do not have a Japanese style moleskine. I have a Japanese (Harmonica style) moleskine but I wouldn't mind working in/on another type of book either. So let me know if you're interested MoonDog. I only advise to wait with sending books until January (after the holidays)... there's so much mail going round in December that the risk of your book getting lost is larger.

I agree Nicky, I wasn't going to start swaping mine until after December. I wouldn't want anyone's books to be MIA. :-)

Hi everyone! I'm new to this and would REALLY like to try it, get the hang of it, before I try a group. I think it would be so exciting to see everyone's different styles in my book! :) So here is my information and if you don't mind give me a pm if your interested in exchanging...
Also,I will not be ready to do this until January...that way the holiday mail will slow down and it will give me time to decide on how to decorate to get it started.
1: THEME: HODGE PODGE..in other words, whatever your heart desires...wether it be your interests, things in your day to day life, about your state or country, favorite color and what you feel best represents that...And it can go on and on ...
2: DO' s: ALWAYS Do your best work...as long as it looks like you put your best to it...I have no problems with that.:) Nudity is fine as long as it's tastefully done...
All mediums welcome! HD/HP, COLLAGE, MIXED, ETC...
Paints, inks, markers, crayons, glitter, ribbon, lace, etc...are all welcome...Just try to keep it flat and if glitter used, make sure it is sealed as best as possible.
Do use wax paper between pages...
DON'TS: NO foul language, really gruesome art, no disrespectful depictions of anyone by which I mean, race, color, nationality, religion, politics, etc...diversity is what makes us who we are!
NO large embellishments, but some smaller flat ones would be fine
Do not COPY AND PASTE everything, but some is allowed...Just don't make it your whole page...collage, I'm learning, is soooooo much more...
3: LOCATION: I'm in Arkansas, United States and I'm willing to exchange with international
4: # of pages: 3
5: COMMENTS:
Keep in touch...if there is a delay for ANY REASON just get a hold of me...I understand life happens. But on that same note,I do think acceptable shipping times should be agreed upon and so forth...
Any advice from people that have done this before would be greatly appreciated

I looked through and there are a lot of awesome themes I am happy to get started on some of your books!
THEME: In the Ocean a Continuous scene
COMMENTS: I will pencil a light line across all the pages for the sandy bottom of the Ocean. I want people to draw or paint anything found at the bottom of the sea. the idea is to spread your plants, fish, shells or other objects throughout the whole book. Do as little or as much as you want BUT DO NOT color in the water or sand. I will complete them myself so it matches across the whole scene.
DO'S: Hand Drawn or Painted only. Real or Fantasy, Shells, Plants, Mermaids and other Sea Life, Sunken Treasure or wreckage. It is perfectly fine to alter the sand floor making it pile up here or there if you wish, as long as it is still continuous.
DON'TS: Do not color in the water or sand. No gore, no embellishments
LOCATION: California, USA. yes to international
#pages: Willing to do 1-4 pages. My book will not be done in pages but as a complete scene. Just add a little something here and there throughout the book as your MUSE desires.
