I'd like to join! Do we need to choose 3 different breeds form this group are can they be all of same breed? I am a HUGE Rotty fun and I've sure I can get my big ol' wanna-be lap dog Kong (my two year old German Rottweiler who is convinced that my lap is the only suitable place to sit) to pose for me all day long!

Kavka it helps to have a 42 acre farm and an ATV. I run them as a pack 3-5 miles a day. Even the Jack Russell runs with us...in fact I've clocked him at 22 mph! Keeps them all livable :)

Looking up dogs to draw for this and omg I just had to share this picture (http://www.kyanjuwa.com/images/Bear02.JPG). Cutest dog ever lol. Did you know (at least I think this is true) that Bolt from the Disney movie is a White Shepherd too?

So I've decided on my four species: white shepherd, pembroke corgi, samoyed, and Lancashire Heelers (you have to google them. They are so cute and short haha :D). I'll be working on them today and I'll probably just whip them all out so I can send them early.

a123andpoof
06-15-2011, 10:16 PM
Yes, bold was definatly a white shepherd, though looked like a young white shepherd!

And great breed Katrina!

debs913
06-16-2011, 10:19 AM
katrina--great breeds...and I really like Lancashire heelers...they are like black and tan Corgis only a little taller!

I've got three of my cards done...an Australian Kelpie pup (my own, home-bred puppy Ranger), a Puli, a blue merle Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Later today I am going to finish another Kelpie card...this one of my dog Dare herding a flock of ducks/geese :) Will be ready to mail tomorrow, I hope.

I've really enjoyed this swap. I hope we do more dog breed groups!

I'm doing a Welsh corgi (haven't decided pem or cardi, yet) an Australian shepherd, a German shepherd, and an old English sheep dog. So cute!!

katrinabean86
06-16-2011, 01:00 PM
Okay I've finished :) For some reason, I had a lot more trouble with these. I don't know how I did on the heeler...he looks kind of wonky to me. O.o The photos I was basing him off of looked much more chihuahua like than mine, at least in the face. I love their squat chubby bodies lol :) When I was little, I always wanted a sheep dog because I had a stuffed animal one for years. Anyway, here are my cards. I'll mail out today!

debs913
06-16-2011, 05:25 PM
Thanks! That's what we use the Kelpies for here. They work the geese and goats (and sheep when we had 'em). Couldn't do the farm without our good right hand dogs!

So cute, Katrina and debs!!!

katrinabean86
06-17-2011, 12:51 AM
I love dogs with a purpose. Have any of you ever seen Dogs 101 on Animal Planet? Whenever they talk about herding dogs, they always say that you have to have the right environment for them because they'll herd whatever is around...children, other animals, you. Haha :) I thought that was so cute. Their tendencies are just there in the breeds.

a123andpoof
06-17-2011, 08:24 AM
I need a herding dog haha so when I let my chickens free range she can keep them together XD and awsome cards debs and katrina!

debs913
06-17-2011, 09:57 AM
It's cute until you try to walk from one end of the house to the other and 4 Kelpies are all in front of you backing up and trying to herd you the other way LOL. As to chickens, well chickens don't really herd. I have a very talented dog who can manage the chickens on a good day when the wind is right. Chickens have little to no flocking instinct, so when a dog comes toward them, they scatter in as many directions as there are chickens!

I did have a Kelpie who could herd turkeys. She was my most predatory dog. I think she telepathically told the turkeys she would eat them if they didn't go the way she wanted them to!

a123andpoof
06-17-2011, 07:53 PM
Haha that is true...my chickens stay pretty close together though.

stonehaven
06-17-2011, 08:48 PM
I want chickens! Why don't I have any chickens!?

a123andpoof
06-17-2011, 08:56 PM
I don't know! You should get some! They bring much entertainment, and eggs!

katrinabean86
06-17-2011, 08:59 PM
it's a lot more common now (having this discussion over at the chicken swap too ) and pretty much as long as you have enough space for them to move and not escape, you can have them in your back yard. Imho, fresh eggs taste way better.

a123andpoof
06-17-2011, 09:01 PM
I believe it! I can't wait to get my first eggs. We have 1 acre, but they have a large coop, and a good size pen, and we are now starting to let them free range. under supervision of course.

katrinabean86
06-17-2011, 09:03 PM
Yeah, my friend has a pretty big back yard but not that big. And they had a bad experience with some hawks. Only one out of four of their original ones survived so now they watch them closely. They have a coop for night time. And at the time, her husband had only gone in for a minute or two, so the hawks had been watching :(

a123andpoof
06-17-2011, 09:05 PM
Thats to bad. I worry about my girls cause we have a big hawk around, but their pen is under a bunch of trees. So I don't think the hawk can get them. This is a huge hawk not a small one.

debs913
06-17-2011, 09:31 PM
Owls and hawks are an issue here. We lost a pen of goslings to an owl. Found all the corpses under a tree...the owl didn't even eat them. We think it was a young one that just kind of went crazy.

Our chicken pen is Fort Knox. We have chicken wire on top and hardware cloth (tiny openings) all around the outside. Nothing gets in there. They free range during the day, but have lots of bushes and trees to hide under if hawks fly over. And the free range geese set up a ruckus if there are predators about.

We raise our chicks in the spare bathtub. One night I heard squawking and ran in there and a black snake was coiled around a chicken (they were fledged, about a pound and just about ready to go outside). I grabbed the snake's tail, and yelled for my husband who got hold of the head and we uncoiled an 8 foot black snake. It came in up the pipes in the sink. We sealed the vanity door after that. The chicken survived :)

Probably more than anyone wants to know about poultry :) (Did I mention my new gosling, Nymphadora? She is so cute and has her own bodyguards (the adult male geese).

a123andpoof
06-17-2011, 09:33 PM
Oh my! I would hate to find a snake in my tub!

The coop is very secure! And they are under trees, but all around is bushes so lots of hiding places!
