This is a swap about honey, honey bees, honey comb, and hives.

Did you know that honey collection is an very ancient activity? Humans began hunting for honey at least 10,000 years ago, as evidenced with cave paintings in Valencia, Spain.
Honey was very popular in Ancient Egypt, both as a food product and as a beauty aid.

Bees have been domesticated from ancient times, in many countries. They are kept in hollow trees, logs, wooden boxes, and in England, they are housed in hand-made straw skeps.

Beekeepers encourage overproduction of honey within the domesticated hives so that the excess honey can be taken for human consumption without endangering the bees. Honey Harvest usually begins in August, whether it is taking honey from domestic hives or collecting wild honey and honeycomb. Honey Harvest continues through September and October, depending on where one lives.

Honey is a sweet food made by bees using nectar from flowers. The variety produced by honey bees is the product most commonly referred to as "honey" and is the type of honey collected by beekeepers and consumed by humans. Honey produced by other bees and insects has distinctly different properties.
Honey is an organic, natural, and healthy food product. Honey is an ingredient in many cosmetics and natural beauty aids.

*Please make sure to package your cards securely and confirm there is enough postage on the envelope.
If you are new to swapping or just may want to pick up some good tips for shipping here is a great link.

http://atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=909

Are both sets wood cuts, or just one of the series of three?
Not only am I curious, but it would be great if you put that additional information into your gallery notes with your cards. :) It is impressive to have done wood cuts for ATCs:notworthy:

thanks......The bee itself is the woodcut. That is why the bee is the same on each card. The back ground is rolled relief ink which allows a bit of freedom from my regular print work. So both series have the same bee; however a different feeling to each series of ATC's. I am trying to get away from series; (sigh) however I haven't quite made that leap yet. ;) I will see if I can change my notes in the gallery. I was lucky to post the pictures.

Everybodies cards are so great. I really love this swap so much that I'm going to do 6:6 because I can't stop drawing little bees.

Back to the woodcutting what type of wood and saw. These are so unique. I'd love to have one. You need to take Newbie out from under your name. You have definatly too much talent

rogalaca
05-18-2011, 04:02 PM
Jennie the woodblock is cherry and about 2"x4". I don't use a saw I use hand tools that gouge out the wood. Then you use the woodcut much like a stamp; but with different ink.

Thank you Rogalaca, I love the idea of that. Must go look in my husband's tool.

If you want to practice, you can take a potato, cut it in half, and cut out something simple, like your initial, dip the potato into food coloring and "stamp" your initial onto paper or napkins.

Carving wood blocks into bees involves the same principle, but is more difficult due to the hardness of the wood and the fact that you need a gouging tool, or a carving tool, to remove the wood with.

A potato is cheap, and can give you some practice, and is fun.
Our Brownie group made Christmas wrap with potatoes carved with Christmas trees and green coloring that were quite good-looking.

I started with potato and leaf prints. And erasers. the gum erasers can be carved also with just an xacto.

I do lino also. In fact I am working one now for an ATC. But it
is a bit small and challenging. we shall see.

i remember using the potato method in school.

A piece of lino is also great. It's more permanent than potato but not as hard as wood. It's easy to carve and if you use one of those little paint rollers, you can roll on a layer of paint, place a paper leaflet, use a clean roller on the back of that and then peel the paper off (great for xmas card fronts) kind of like a very slow home woodcut printing.

SeattleMeg
05-19-2011, 01:41 PM
I had a family friend that did lino block prints professionally. I don't think any of them were ever less than 8x10, though. It's not easy, that's for sure. I think I did the potato version as a kid, also.
Meg
thx for the rating!

Jennie

Gouge!!!! That's a word that sounds like something I'd end up doing to myself, and visiting the ER. I think I'll stick with my standard first medium, glass. I wish I could figure out a way to do a glass ATC. That would be fun

miloccpep
05-19-2011, 08:36 PM
I am inspired already just reading about using potato and cherrywood, and 'lino', not sure what that is. I 'carved' 2 stamps using rubber, very similar to eraser. Is that lino? I think I shall try doing bee/s.
Been waylaid by the athons and other swaps due Jun and early July. Will get down to doing BEEs reall soon! Great cards everyone!

I think everyone calls it lino for short. I am new but maybe someone should think about a swap "All things Potato" and we could all do potato stamps. ....maybe not. Just a thought.

It's a linoleum block. 'lino' might be western Canadian for it. I wonder if folks elsewhere call it that?

I haven't worked with lino in a long time. I'd love to try it with some card stock and experiment with making some backgrounds that later cut up into ATC increments? It's a thought, for sure.

Completed one card today. Not quite what I had in mind - I wanted to use oil pastel to do the outline, than perhaps acrylic or poster color paint. But I ended up using the oil pastel for the whole card instead! LOL!

All are fabric with gold organza bees made with free motion stitching. The gold didn't scan that well. I made the background fabrics by printing honeycomb pictues onto cotton fabric. I also added some highlights with glitter pens.

Stretching my wings a bit [cough] - I have not done one of these mixed-matched collages before, but I listen to country radio a lot - And I loved Blake Shelton before he became popular with his Country Hit - Honey Bee.

So here's my tribute to Country Music, Blake, & Bees - LOL!!!
K&company background & wings - bee, Tim Holtz Guy & Gal, Dover Freebies, Blake Shelton Lyrics, walnut ink, Lots of Gel Medium.

I have just created the perfect card for this swap, I would love to join, except for the postal strike here in Canada, its supposed to come to an end soon as if they do not come to an agreement, they will then be legislated back to work. So our Canadian fingers are crossed that this happens this week! If there is room for me, and depending on how you feel about the strike, I would LOVE to participate in this swap....thanks Dardarbinx....

Vicki Z
06-21-2011, 07:01 AM
My understanding of the strike is that it affects different sections of Canada, and I have also heard that it is supposed to come to an end soon.
I have been getting mail from Canada, although it is taking more than twice as long to reach me as it usually does.

The deadline for this swap is July 15, which is far enough away that you should be okay.
I will sign you up, dardarbinx, and we will see what the strike does.

Cards have been sorted, and returns were mailed this morning.

Hopefully US participants should start receiving their cards by the end of this week.
International participants, unfortunately, usually have to wait a little longer to get their returns.

Everyone turned in some awesome art, so I hope everyone will be pleased with their returns.
Please remember to give iTrader (to me) and rep points (to the players whose cards you receive) when the cards arrive so that everyone knows where their creations ended up.

Thank you for participating.

Jennie, I seemed to have difficulty trying to 'REP' ya! Been at it for the past 3 days! Need to spread some rep to others first!

miloccpep, rep points don't work by "time" so trying for 3 days will not make any difference. You need to rep at least 9 other people before you can rep the same person again.

You can leave rep points for things other than a card received in a swap exchange, you can leave a rep point for a nice card someone has posted on the thread that you really like or you can rep someone for a helpful hint or curteous comment that you found useful yourself. That is what is meant by "spread the rep".

Try reping a bunch of different people (9 different people) then go back to Jennie.
