HandPainted Landscape En Plein Air - Due June 30th
Due Date - June 30, 2011
Sign-up Date - None
Withdraw Date - None but please let me know if you’re withdrawing.
Number of Cards - 3:3
Number of Participants - 30
Medium - Watercolors, Acrylics, Oils, Chalk Pastels, Gaouche, Encaustic Wax, or other painting mediums. No collage, or plain colored pencils. These are to be PAINTED only, with the exception of chalk pastels which are used in a painterly fashion.

Don’t be put off by the fancy French term; En Plein Air just means “in the open air”, or painting outdoors. Grab your paint box & head out to find a scenic spot, & paint yourself some landscapes. If you can’t find a way to paint outdoors, you can always work up a sketch to take home & do the painting there, or maybe you want to be at home to paint with hot encaustic wax. You can always paint from a photo, but there’s magic in trying to capture the colors you see in the great outdoors.

HOW I SWAP
I try to swap like for like, but that’s not always possible, & my like for like may not be the same as your like for like, but I’ll do my best.

POSTAGE
Include a SASE with your name & address in the return address as well as the send to section of the envelope. I don’t pick up postage due envelopes, so make sure you have enough postage when you send to me.

CARD INFO
Include your real name, user name, swap name & location on the back of all cards. Be sure to add your username so you can receive “You Rock’s”/Rep Points.

Each card must be in a protective sleeve.

WHEN YOU RECEIVE YOUR RETURNS
You can leave 'You Rock's' for your fellow players and iTrader for me. I will leave iTrader for all players when I swap.

Have a great time painting En Plein Air!!

Welcome everyone! I have nanette653, Lilthamel, serendipityunt, & Barbara F on the players list.

I'm getting my paintbox ready to go, but we need some days without wind before I can actually get outdoors to paint. The temps are perfect, though - not too hot yet. The trees are so varied - some in bloom, some with just buds, some with new leaves. The greens are sooooooooo bright! I'm pumped! :spinny:

lacemuse
05-08-2011, 09:55 AM
Don't worry too much about how they look Gerry, just do them, & more importantly, have fun doing them! We're not looking for perfection here, just your best effort. Impressionism is a wonderful landscape technique, & good for the soul as it frees me from perfectionism. The Winter Pines landscape above is slightly impressionistic.

oh I am so wanting to join in on this swap. Just so happens I have been painting this weekend and may have one or two suitable ones. And if I dont its a good excuse to have to get the ole encaustic stuff out again.

I will be going on a painting holiday pretty soon. I am going to Greece this year, to an island called Chios. So I will be doing a lot of plein air painting anyway. I guess I can do a few ATCs when I am there, with plenty of time to send them to you when I return. So, please sign me up! I would love to join.

Welcome Dulci! I was thinking the same thing, but the temps have climbed from a nice 64 on Sat to 94 yesterday!!! Where'd spring go?

lacemuse
05-11-2011, 03:17 PM
Well, I'm not going to get outside to paint today - rain on the way. So, I'm contemplating just where I want to search for that perfect Plein Air experience. Do I want to just drive out of town & set up on a hill in the country - maybe next to a hillside cemetery where I have a great view of fields & trees. Or, do I want to go to a lake & find a quiet little cove with a view?

I ordered a Guerilla Thumbox so I can have all my supplies in a little box/easel that I can take anywhere. It's just 5"x7"x9". It has a plate on the bottom that lets you attach it to a camera tripod, or use the little thumbhole in the bottom to hold it in your hand, or you can sit it on a table or your lap. Here's a pic of it set up for painting on a tripod. I ordered the oil paint setup, so it comes with 4 flat brushes with short handles to fit inside the box.
71348

Where are you all planning to paint en plein air? How will you carry your supplies with you? Will you use an easel? Do you have a tiny set of watercolors to take, or small tubes of paint?

CherylS
05-11-2011, 04:48 PM
I have been painting outdoors for years carring easel, pastel box and misc other stuff. Now I have 2 very bad knees so I just started using the guerrilla thumbbox. All my supplies are in a small tote that I can carry in 1hand and use my cane with the other. See my set up in a park near my home.
Bring only minimal equipment for the best experience. Decide your location ahead of time.
I will be joining my pastel society on monthly paintouts on Cape Cod. It's the best!
Just have fun.

lacemuse
05-13-2011, 04:15 PM
My Guerrilla Thumbox arrived yesterday! I filled it with my tubes of paint & short brushes & a brush cleaning jar. I couldn't take it outside, though. We had really bad storms all evening & into the night. The wind was ferocious!

Maybe this evening, but it looks like rain again. Oh, well. I have to go pick up some 6x8 canvases anyway, so I'll be ready to paint en plein air this week-end. <fingers crossed for good weather>

Does anyone have plans for plein air painting this week-end?

I have compacted my supplies small enough to tote around in my purse, believe it or not. The most inconvenient item I have to carry is a small jar of water (use to be a salsa jar. lol!). We are having beautiful weather. I just haven't figured where I want to go for location. So many choices! :D

Elf
05-14-2011, 12:48 PM
I will lurk for now, as I only have one block of paper, a few brushes, and a traveler's watercolor kit, still, that would probably suffice! The rest of my stuff won't arrive for several weeks....

lacemuse
05-14-2011, 09:19 PM
Hi Elf! You're welcome to lurk as much as you want. A traveler's watercolor kit is just the thing for plein air painting. I hope you'll decide to join us.

I was watching a show on impressionalist painters today and they told a story of Monet having the leaves removed from a tree so he could finish a winter scene painting. I was able to dig up this quote about it.

"I'm going to offer fifty francs to my landlord to see if I can have the oak tree's leaves removed... Isn't it the final straw to be finishing a winter landscape at this time of year..." (Claude Monet)

Anyway it made me think of this swap. :spinny:

lacemuse
05-18-2011, 09:00 AM
 OK, an impressionist who wants to see a bare tree in order to paint an impressionistic tree?!:biglaugh: Of course, he might've been painting realism, but still it's funny!

I'm trying out different oil paint base cards. The last one I did was a canvas paper. The oil paint just didn't flow on it & it was so textured, it was hard to get the paint to cover. I should've covered it with gesso first, although I did lay down a thin layer of titanium white as a base.

Next, I'm trying a card cut from a pad of canvas I found at Hobby Lobby. It's real canvas, gessoe'd, but not mounted. I ran it through my die cutting machine & now have some atc sized canvases. It's pretty stiff, but I'll mount it onto heavier card stock. It should work just fine being real canvas.

Is a little hard to achieve detail with the oils in such a small space, but they are my favorite medium!

lacemuse
05-31-2011, 10:00 AM
Yes, it's definitely a challenge to work in oils in so small a space. It's like every brush stroke matters waaaaaaaaaaay more than in a larger size! I think, "Hey that looks pretty good." Then I look at it close up & think how crappy it looks! I keep using smaller & smaller brushes.

Thank you lacemuse!

How's everyone doing on your cards? The weather here has changed from pleasant, spring to 98 degrees & high humidity!!

Still, like a dedicated plein air artist, I'm going to brave the heat, humidity, bugs & whatever else nature throws at me to go fishing with my husband. Well, he'll fish & I'll be painting.

I must reluctantly withdraw. My muse has been smooshed by many happy life events (just completed Eagle Scout project by the son who is turning 18 tomorrow with a party to celebrate, as well as graduation on June 21.) My poor inspiration will need a bit of recuperation and I don't believe she will be up and running before June 30th. Sorry!

After the crappy results I got painting on canvas paper, I found a pad of real canvas at Hobby Lobby, so I cut out some atc sized canvases. Here's the results - much easier to paint on!

It cooled down this week-end - yay!! The weather is perfect today, so I'll do another session this afternoon.

Just a reminder. The due date is just 2 weeks away. I've heard that Canada's postal service is on strike. I have 1 Canadian player whose cards I haven't received. Depending on how the strike goes, I may extend the deadline, but I'll wait another week to decide that. Internationals should be getting close to mailing to meet the current deadline.

The cards that have arrived have all been amazing! True fine art pieces!

I think that happens when you've already given that person a YouRock! recently. Try giving someone else a YouRock!, then try that other person again.

In the mean time, you could send them a PM letting them know you'll do the YouRock! later.

The site is not letting me use the "You Rock" for one of my cards. I get a message that I need to spread around the reputation before I can add to hers. suggestion?

Pamitha
07-13-2011, 01:34 PM
Or look at the art that is posted on this thread. If you like it, leave that person a note...even if you didn't get art from that person. I agree with Lacemuse. You left that person a "You Rock!" either here or on some other swap's thread. If you find you can't leave a "You Rock", go to her profile page and leave a visitor's note instead. It's all good!
