Creative Life Chunky Book!
This swap is closed! Thanks for your interest!

Swap Due Date - April 30, 2008
Signup/withdraw date - April 15, 2008
Returns mailed - May 3, 2008
Number of Pages - 4 for 4
Number of participants - 50 maximum

This is a 4 for 4 swap for 4x4 inch (10 x10 cm) Chunky Book Pages. The theme is "Creative Life" -- think art, creativity, craftiness, inspiration, fun. You will make and send 4 pages, and you will receive 4 pages in return. In a traditional chunky book swap, you make pages for all the other participants -- but I'm organizing this one more like an ATC swap.

Examples by OriginalYouth (first 2) and Katxena (3rd):

There is no iTrader requirement for this swap -- anyone can join! If you've never done a chunky page swap before, this would be an excellent way to try them out without a huge commitment.

Artwork: Each page should be decorated on the front and the back. Your major effort should be made on the front, and your artist information will go on the back (at a minimum: your UserID, the name of this swap, date -- but you can include other information too, as you like). Please decorate your backs too, but it's not necessary to make them as detailed or elaborate as the front -- just don't leave them plain!! No copies -- all pages must be original (but may be similar!).

Media: All media are welcome.

Binding: Leave 1/2 an inch (1.3 cm) on the left side free of embellishments for binding. You will bind your own pages. This is a theme that comes up in chunky books fairly often, so if you want more than 3 pages in your book, you will most likely be able to collect more.

Base & Embellishments: Please use a sturdy base for your pages -- cardboard from food boxes, mat or mount board, or several layers of thick cardstock would be ideal. You want the page to stand up by itself without bending. Feel free to use any embellishments you choose -- fibers, chunky bits, beads, whatever! But please do not put any embellishments on the left edge, and use surface embellishments no more than 1/8 of an inch (.3 cm) thick.

Shipping: Please include a large label with your address on it. DO NOT INCLUDE A SASE. I will provide appropriate envelopes for all returns.

Return Postage: ALL participants must pay $2.50 USD for their own return postage.
US participants, please enclose stamps (preferred) or well concealed cash.
International participants, please enclose US stamps or well concealed US cash -- or you may use paypal (Kristie@papaya-palace.com). If you use paypal, please send $2.75 USD, to offset the paypal fee. If none of the international options work for you, please PM me and we can try to work something else out.

A (P) after a person's name indicates their postage has been sent, by whatever method.

I am still trying to figure out what is considered chunky. Is it the size of the page, or the fact it's collaged, or does it have to be "chunky" as in: thick because of layers/embellies etc?

I am still trying to figure out what is considered chunky. Is it the size of the page, or the fact it's collaged, or does it have to be "chunky" as in: thick because of layers/embellies etc?

I think these pages are chunky in at least 3 ways:

1. The paper is thicker, therefore the pages have a chunkier feel.
2. Embellishments are allowed and encouraged, which makes the pages fat.
3. When you bind them into a book, the resulting book is a chunky little fat thing exploding with fibers.

There may be more ways in which they are chunky, but that's what the term means to me.

I'm so desperate to work on these, but have to force myself to finish other things first. I have a few other swaps to post out (that are already completed) and then I think these can be next on my list.

Kat, I think doing 4 at a time is a GREAT way. I'm going to do one like this next! :D

Thanks -- I'm so glad that people like doing the chunkies this way. As soon as this one is finished, I'll try to start another one. 8 pages would make a nice book, especially if you made your own cover.

Hi Katxena! I've completed three of the four chunky pages - these can be seen at the Flickr space listed in my signature. I'm rather technologically challenged and I have not been able to upload pictures to the gallery, however, OY said that you might be interested in posting these to the thread, though how one would go about doing that is truly beyond me. :nah: (I really still think that Adriayna must work at NASA to have done that server change thing.):cute:

Hi Katxena! I've completed three of the four chunky pages - these can be seen at the Flickr space listed in my signature.

They're great pages! Perfect for the theme. I'm posting them for you:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2238/2335715567_ab7f672fb1.jpg

Here's how to post an image from flickr. Go to the page that has the picture you want to post. Click "all sizes" just above it. Look at the different sizes and pick which one you want (I picked medium for yours). Once you've settled on the size you want, scroll down to the box that says "Grab the photo's URL." Highlight the url in the box, and select copy.

THEN head over to ATCsforAll, and start the message you want to post the picture in. To insert the picture, type paste the url, then type

Linda, it's very pretty, and I see what you mean about the left corner. If you have a white paint pen, maybe you could outline or highlight one of the dragonflies..? I think something bright in that corner will draw the eye from it, to the star in the heart, to the topmost flower and down. Right now, my eyes are going straight to the center, to the flowers and then to the bottom edge.

I just want to be perfectly clear, so I don't mess up (I'm a chunkies virgin, ya know, a little nervous)...

Each finished piece should be 4x4 (not 4.5 x 4), and a 1/2 inch on the left edge needs to be left clear of "stuff" so that it can be bound along that edge, right? Beyond that, it's pretty much anything goes w/in the theme, so long as it's sturdy?

Katxena

You are absolutely correct! (and don't ever hesitate to ask questions!)

You can decorate that left 1/2 inch by coloring it or putting paper there or whatever -- just don't put anything chunky there that would be hard to punch holes in.

Also, do decorate the back -- it need not be as elaborate or involved as the front, but don't leave it blank. And make sure to put your artist info on it, just like an ATC.

Ok Page 2 this one was a really fun to do... The clip art is peices of an arabic peice called the Khamsa of nizami... I cut pieces from pictures of the different pages of the book and layered them in my own way to make my own little "scene". I think it needs a glaze but I am unsure of whether to tint it with some gold or not!http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3149/2344732620_6d97586650_m.jpg

art4mysanity: I'll let you know when your pages have arrived! I can't wait to see them in person!

I think it's a dead certainty that I'll do this swap again. Four pages isn't quite enough for a book, so I'll have to reprise this one, and then there are so many themes that I love!!! :) I've been bitten by the chunky book bug hard.

A note about packaging your pages for mailing.

A lot of people in this swap are new to chunky pages, so some of you might be wondering how to package them for mailing. Here's what I do for chunky swaps I participate in.

I wrap each page in wax paper (wrap loosely, then tape the wax paper to itself) to protect it from smudging or sticking. Then I put them in an appropriate sized envelope.

Padded envelopes are usually not necessary (and only add bulk and cost). I lay the pages out so that they are as flat as can be while still fitting in the envelope, then I tape the wrapped pages to one another to keep them from shifting or bunching during mailing -- similar to the way OriginalYouth suggests in this thread on packaging ATCs:
http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=909

If you feel that the embellishments you've used require additional padding, it's fine to use a padded envelope, but I recommend that you still wrap the pages and try to keep them as flat as possible. More protection might be offered by adding a light piece of cardboard (like a cracker box) and taping the pages to that, if you feel that is necessary.

If you are concerned about wetness, you can put the wrapped, taped-together set in a ziplock baggie before putting it in the envelope.

Most importantly for this swap: Do NOT send a self-addressed stamped envelope. I really don't want it! Just send a label (and pay your postage as described on page 1). I prefer to provide the envelopes myself (believe it or not, this really helps me control postage costs).

Oh yeah Katxena - another round of 4 chunky pages would be wonderful! I can handle four at a time, but 9 or 20 at once is a little too much. I'm going to keep my book open to adding more and more chunky pages to it. This was my first try and I like doing them.

I just realized that this swap is going to break my organization system!

When I host a swap, I keep one of those photo storage boxes on the shelf under my coffee table -- when cards come in, I check them in, leave feedback, post in the thread, and store the cards (in the envelope they came in) in the photo box.

But there is no way that the pages made by all *25* people signed up for this swap are going to fit in a photo box, so I'm going to have to figure out a different system. I'm *so* excited to have this problem!! :)

Thanks for joining everyone!

Katxena and Meow those are great I am still learning about chunky books ... gotta ask what is Tip-in ?

A tip in is a page you add to an existing book. You know those cards that are inserted into the binding of magazines that you can use to subscribe? Those are tip-ins. They are made after the rest of the magazine is set, and then they are "tipped" into the magazine before it is bound.

In the art world, a tip-in is a page you make and add to a journal or altered book.

Katxena

I just started a supply swap for fibers to use in altered art. Although you won't get returns in time to use them in this swap, you might want to check it out if you've got the chunky bug: Fiber Lovers Swap (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?p=61962#post61962)

I have to have a long time to work, and I do them in batches -- 4 this week, 4 more in 2 weeks, and then the final ones after that. I can't sit down and do a whole mess of them in one go. It gets boring for me.

I was inspired to do 4 pages at a time by LisaVollroth -- she's doing chunky swaps that way on a Flickr group I'm in. I think it's nice to have the option to do it either way.

OMG - those are so FUN! :biglaugh:

My DD would kill me if I took off with her butterflies or fish, tho - she has quite the ménagerie of plastic creatures. I don't think she has lizards... a few aligators... Clearly I need to pay more attention when I'm out shopping for supplies!

Sad, but I have baskets of plastic and rubber animals and food and other weird bits that my kids are not allowed to play with - mummy's toys! I used to do big canvases with all kinds of goodies attached. I guess they'd be "chunky paintings"! :jiggy::goofy::yes::jiggy::goofy::yes:

Oh yeck, I use everything! Nail polish, coloured pencil, markers, gel pens... The blotches were made with bingo dabbers! Or is it dobbers? The fronts are card stock and the backs are basic padding board from graph paper pads.

So there is probably an FAQ somewhere but I'm lazy - do I just ship my pages together in a bubble envelope? Do you bag them individually in a ziploc? What's the skinny on the chunkies? Inquiring mind wants to know.:jiggy:

Wrap fragile charms in a chunk of bubble wrap or padding, and I put each in a ziploc, so the hostess can see them to swap them out. :) That's what I do, anyway!

Katxena

Yep, what OY said about packing. You can also wrap them in wax paper if you don't have ziplocks on hand, but ziplocks are probably better.

I'm keeping all the pages for this swap in a bag in my closet. I keep wanting to dive into it and swim around! Everyone's work is looking so great! :)

(Don't worry, I won't really dive in!)
