FAVORITE ARTISTS SWAP 2
Hosted by Juanita Rojas
Swap due date – July 15, 2011
Sign up whenever you want!
Number of players – unlimited
Number of cards – 3 for 3

We traded such great cards last year, that we’ve got to do it again!!!! Check out the great examples below:

Who are your favorite artists? Leonardo daVinci or Michael deMeng? Pablo Picasso or Lynne Perrella? Traci Bautista or Ralph Bakshi? Georges Braque or Nick Bantock?

Your assignment, should you agree to accept it, is to create three ATCs, each one honoring a different artist by creating a little gem of art in his or her style. Use any medium you want, paint and glue up a storm! The artist doesn’t have to be world-famous, just someone whose work inspires you. The work should be by you, with your favorite artists looking over your shoulder. If you want to bring a tear of happiness to my eye, hostess cards are really appreciated and gratefully accepted.

*I will pay the postage for the first three international players.
*Enclose the same amount of postage as it cost to send me your cards. Do not send a return envelope, just a large (not the return address labels) mailing label with your name and address. I’ll provide the envelopes. *PM me for my address when you are ready to mail your cards. All cards are due in my hands by July 15. Late cards will be returned. Please mail early so they arrive on time.
*Don’t forget to leave iTrader for me and rep points for the other players that you get cards from.

SWAP RULES:
*All cards should be 3.5” by 2.5”, horizontal or vertical.
*Please, no heavy, thick or bulky embellishments or loose glitter. No stickers with white borders as the main image.
*Cards should be on a sturdy base, like cardstock or cardboard or watercolor paper.
*Please include your user name, real name and state or country, plus the swap name on the back of your cards.
*Please include your user name and swap name on the back of your envelope to me.
*Send work that is your best and that you are proud of. I will try to swap cards that show a similar effort.
*I’m not shy – I love host cards! But they’re not mandatory…
*If you have read this far, I will reward you with a print of one of my cards. It’s not Picasso, but it’s something….

But in all seriousness, there are some artists on AFA and ITC that are very inspirational to me. I love looking through their galleries.... not only for inspiration, but because their art 'moves' me.

I got some books out of the library about several of the artists I like...Turner, Magritte, Hollander, Barry and O'Keeffe to name a few. Also picked up a couple of books on women artists (I visited the(National Museum of Women in the Arts (http://www.nmwa.org/) in Washington DC many years ago) and was blown away by the art. I found a new to me artist Frida Kahlo whose work I fell in love with! She is a flamboyant, surrealist painter known as the "Soul of Mexico". Her work is beautiful and creepy ..just my cup of tea!

Thank you Juanita for hosting this as I'm really enjoying learning more about these artists.

I hope that other participants will post a bit about their favorite artists as I'd like to learn more about them!

Discovering Frida is so great! Now you have to see the movie - she had a very interesting life! I think Salma Hayak played her, she was wonderful in the role.
I'm rediscovering August Macke, a little-known artist whose work I love. I think one of my cards will reference him.......

I decided to pick a theme common to some of my favorite artists, and draw that in the style of each. So...I did trees. Sometimes I have included only part of a painting:
Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) "Blue Trees"
Giotto (1266 - 1337) "The Miraculous Landing at Marseilles"
Henri Rousseau (1884 - 1910) "Tropical Forest With Monkeys"
Van Gogh (1853 - 1890) - Cypress tree

Thanks! It's always good to get out of my comfort zone a little. Looking through art books for ideas has been a blast. I took one art history class, but I want to take more. I think I may love art more than chocolate, which is really saying something.

Ok, I love being able to say "Today I worked on a Kahlo and a Monet. Tomorrow, I may try an O'Keefe or two." :) I'm finding them more time-consuming than usual, but very satisfying. I've been thinking about calling up my junior high art teacher--the dreaded Mrs P.--and saying "Let's see you give me a C now!"

Very nice cards. Wasn't this a good theme? I found it really challenging and educational. I particularly like the Rothko...never heard of him/her and will have to go look at more work!

Juanita Rojas
06-24-2011, 01:37 PM
Yes, i found it challenging but lots of fun! I think a swap like this every month would be good <grin> We could call it . . . "In the Style of . . . " And see what people do with different artists <grin> I love looking at other people's work. I won't tell you how many hours I spend going through the gallery <chuckle>!
This is a fun theme, and the cards I'm getting show that you all are having fun making them. I've made a bunch already just because I enjoy it! I'm looking back through old art books and rediscovering artists like Peter Max whose work I haven't seen lately. Good idea, Dilys......Want to host one? OR, you could start a MMH favorite artist thread. WOW, that would be so cool. I'd hop on that one!

It was a hair-pulling challenge, especially when two of my favorite artists worked in oils and woodcuts. I learned so much from studying their styles! Here are my cards: Albrecht Durer, Arthur Rackham, Jan Brett, Maxfield Parrish

That is such a creative idea! Next time, I think I will try that.

I love your cards, ineedtocreate. I hadn't remembered Jan Brett when I was thinking of artists, but I really like her books/work.

There are so many wonderful children's book illustrators. I don't think they get enough credit as serious artists!

You are so right about children's book illustrators - I snap those books up at my library's annual sale. I have such a load of wonderful art this way!

Dilys and NoisyBrain - Great job on the cards, and kudos on selecting some contemporary artists. I tried to figure out how to do Louise Nevelson, myself, and gave up. Also thought about Judy Chicago! I think it is important to include more women artists in these exchanges.

Whew! Finally finished my cards. I kinda went overboard as usual, so I could have some to choose from for the swap and so I could keep a couple and maybe still have a couple to trade. So here is what I have, and it will probably take two uploads to get them to post:
Wayne Thibaud ("Six Cakes"), Hundertwasser (Three Houses), Kathe Kollwitz (Self Portrait -sort-of), Wolf Kahn # 1 and #2, and Ida Kohlmeyer #1 and #2. Had so much fun with the Kohlmeyers that I think I will do a couple more. Might be a fun swap in the making.

I found Wolf Kahn hard to do in the small scale. Pastels don't work very well for me at that size. I tried these with hard pastels but even so I am not thrilled with the results.

Dedwar, usually domestic mail only takes around three days. I've had a letter make it from the East coast to the West coast in only two.
Plus, there is a 2 week 'wait time' before the host has to send out returns.

Kavka's right - just put them in the mail, and I'll get them!

I won't be able to mail my cards out tomorrow like planned and I don't think they'll make it in time if they don't go out tomorrow! :( I think it takes a week or so for them to get to Wisconsin?

If anyone hasn't yet mailed the cards, I always allow a little grace period, so don't be nervous they won't get here strictly on July 15. If you think your cards will be late, let me know ASAP and I will wait a couple of days until they're all in, then swap them out within a few days. So many wonderful cards - I hope everyone likes the returns!

This swap taught me I have a thing for Spanish art. Artists are Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. All from Spain! I also considered Frida Khalo (Mexico), but couldn't do her justice.

07-18-2011, 12:26 PM
wenrl, I could pick out the Picasso and the Dali, but I had never heard of Joan Miro. You were able to capture the styles of each artist so well. Great art!

Check out Miro's work - I assumed it was a woman! What fascinatingly different styles he had throughout his life. Thanks for another art lesson.

Thank you all for playing. I love the Favorite Artists swap because it is such a learning experience and eye-opener to so many artists I didn't know about. I have some new favorites now!
