Welcome to the official June 2011 Zentangle-a-Thon thread!

First things first. Links for info on "how-to" and inspiration.

The site that first called repetitive doodling "Zentangles" - Zentangle.com (http://www.zentangle.com/) - be sure to check their "about" page for lots of info
Lots of fun tangle patterns here - Tangle Patterns (http://tanglepatterns.com/)
Chatty has a wonderful tute on Zentangles with a Twist - Zentangles with a Twist How To (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16122)
Zentangles with a Twist Social Group (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/group.php?groupid=37)

We're going to kick this off on Friday, June 17 at 12:01 am your local time ('cause I'm impatient and want extra time!) and end on Sunday, June 19 at 11:59 pm your local time.

Please post pictures of your ZAT creations and whether it's available for trade. We want to see the Zentangles!
Post ZAT cards in the new A-Thon Gallery (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?c=17)!
If you don't know how to post your images to the thread: How to Insert Images in Your Post (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13967)

Trading - You are more than welcome to make trades with other players. Please DO NOT post requests for trades to the thread. It can get way too confusing. Please use the Private Message (PM) system. Don't delete your image or post after making a trade; please go back and edit your post.

* On all your art, please include your name, user name, location and ZAT date.

Note: If you do make a trade, please be sure to send to your trade partner within two weeks. If you’re running late, communicate!

WANT TO COMPLIMENT AN ARTIST: And you will… remember you can click the You Rock button and leave it there.

Prep: As preparation for the ZAT, I suggest cutting your blank canvases and drawing your strings on your blanks, whether they are ATCs, inchies, twinchies, etc. This step leaves more time in the ZAT weekend to do your repetitive patterns within the strings.

Materials needed for this fast and fun weekend:

blank canvases of assorted sizes (WC paper is not recommended if you use Sharpie pens) - the challenges are for ATCs (2.5"x3.5") and Thrinchies (3"x3")
pencil for shading
black pens: Micron, ZIG, Prismacolor are recommended for their variety of nib sizes, but even an Ultra Fine Sharpie will do if you don't have the others

Challenges are not a required part of the weekend. Feel free to do your own thing, follow the challenges strictly, or a mix! It's up to you how you make the weekend fun for you!

Challenges for the weekend:

Friday: Summertime ATCs using at least two of the following patterns

Looby Loo (http://tanglepatterns.com/2011/06/how-to-draw-looby-loo.html)
Droplets (http://tanglepatterns.com/2011/06/how-to-draw-droplets.html)
Versa (http://tanglepatterns.com/2011/06/how-to-draw-versa.html)
Celtic (http://tanglepatterns.com/2011/06/how-to-draw-celtic.html)
Riverstones (http://tanglepatterns.com/2011/06/how-to-draw-riverstones.html)

Saturday: Mask ATCs on black backgrounds. Use white or colored gel pens (or both) to create your repetitive patterns

Sunday: Thrinchies (3"x3" square) using one of Sandra Strait's strings (http://tanglepatterns.com/2010/12/guest-contributor-sandra-string-templates.html)

Oooo I'll play! It's been too long since I've a-thonned and I do love me some Zentangle.

Re Sunday's challenge... that page only has 12 strings on it......?

Thanks, Laura. I also fixed the link, as Tangle Patterns told me it couldn't find just the image. (When I pulled just the image, the 12 looked like a 19 to me.)

Whee! I'm up for this--it'll be my first-ever athon!

... although I may not get to do many on Friday, since I'll be at my university orientation-for-freshmen thing... but I'm going to try anyway :)
Just play when you can. There are no rules about how much you "have" to participate in these.

For the Easter ATART, I only did one card the entire weekend!

I love the choices of tangles for Friday - I didn't have even 1 of them in my book already so I have done a very quick 'how-to' sketch of each that I can take with me to the airport. (so glad that I will be home for Saturday as I didn't bring any black paper with me :))
I'll scan my creations when I get home - that will be about when the rest of you are allowed to start anyway :D Happy athoning!!

Friday's tangles are all relatively new ones, so they won't be in any books yet. :)

I will try to play this weekend, although I think my granddaughter is coming again for a sleepover, so her parents can get some sleep- as her new baby brother(2 weeks old tomorrow), is keeping them awake all night.

Hi, I've never, ever, done a zentangle. But I do love a thons, so I'm tempted to try.
Except I love color, and I like to do womens faces or cats............can the zentangles be colored? can an image be incorporated into the pattern? Does the pattern have to be "exact"?

One of the things about the challenges, Suze, is that they are just that. You don't have to do the challenge at all!

And yes, you can color your tangles. Your card doesn't have to be abstract. You are encouraged to put your own spin on the patterns. (I've never once made a tangle pattern that is exactly like the "how to")

Biggest thing is to have fun!!

Uh....yeah. 17-19. Don't know how my dates got mixed up!

ETA: I did a copy/paste from the January ZAT thread, so that's probably where the mix-up occurred.

I have finally managed to get my first lot of cards scanned. The first 3 cards are a set that I owed to Sniisk - made using tangles that spelled: sniisk, sanna and atc.

Wonderful tangles!!

LadySilverwings, you don't have to use white on the black. If you have metallic gel pens, they look stunning on black!!

oh dear, I tried one zentangle and it didn't work out for me. I don't think I'm a tangle kind of girl.(even with Ruby Opaltones help)
But I SURE LIKE LOOKING AT THEM!!!!
so I'll be coming back and drooling.
ROCK THE A THON YOU ZEN ARTISTS!!!!!

Cat's Cradle

Starting on my masks. If you go to Google Images and put in "mask" you'll get lots of different ones to draw from.

Idea: Draw a white masquerade mask on the black paper--color it completely white--then use colored gel pens to create your background, letting your mask stand out.

What a weekend, whew! My delicious granddaughter has just left, and my house has been turned upside down. Going to tidy it up and vacuum and clean, then lie down in a dark room...so it seems that those 4 tangles will be my only ones for the weekend. Have traded one, so am hoping to come along here tomorrow and trade the others with you gals.

Although I don't think it's very zen, more creepy doodles to me. I wasn't watching anything scary or with monster like creatures at all this weekend!! I swear!
