Iris All Year

I love the spring when the iris in my neighborhood are all blooming! Now they are gone so I thought it might be nice to have an exchange among friends so we can look at them all year!

To participate all you need to do is send in cards with some lovely iris on them. Other things on the card are fine, but let’s make the iris the main attraction! Any color real or imagined is acceptable as long as I can tell it is an iris.

Cards can be any medium. Stickers when used wisely are fine but please make sure it is not just a sticker on a card. Let your creative juices flow! Stay with what you like to do best or experiment and try something new. I will try my best to send back a variety to everyone.

Please send me cards you are proud of. In return you will receive cards someone else is proud of.

A few things…….

USA folks please enclose a self-addressed envelope and postage (a single .44 stamp seems to work for 3 cards, but I personally put an extra .20 stamp, for an additional ounce, on all my swap return envelopes.). You can put my address in the return address corner if you feel so moved.

INTERNATIONAL folks enclose an address label, address printed clearly on a piece of paper or long self-addressed envelope. I’ll pay the return postage. (A dollar bill or .98 US stamp is appreciated, but if you don’t have either please don’t let that stop you from joining in on the fun)

An extra Iris Card to gaze upon will put a smile on my face and would be greatly appreciated, but not required for joining.

**** I appreciate those of you who want to share your materials, but my talents are limited to cross stitching so what I receive for any other purpose I share with others. I don’t mind passing it on I just want you all to know I do.****

Please NO EMBELLISHMENTS! Beads, buttons and such can be fun to use, but not for the postal machines, the host who has to let a player know their cards were messed up or the player who gets a messed up card since our cards are at the mercy of the letter handling machines!

Loose cards sliding around in the envelope can also cause a problem so use a small amount of tape to attach all cards together. (Small amount being the operative words here!)

The last and most important thing………..Have fun making your Iris Cards!

Friends who want to play!
Lovely cards have made it to me!
Returns have arrived!

Dilys - your winter iris is really lovely (nothing wrong with the others either!) - and what a brilliant way to depict the frost of winter! Of course, around here a winter iris is a bulb under four feet of snow hahaha

Hello all
I`ve got a selection of Iris photos ready to print for our Swap. I`ve resized them all to 2.5 by 3.5, but when I print them to send it, they come out bigger. Does anyone have any expertise is this area...

It has been brought to my attention someone thought when I made this comment I meant no expertise in taking photos for ATCs for swaps.

THAT IS NOT WHAT I MEANT AT ALL. I MEANT I HAVE NO EXPERTISE IN SIZING PHOTOS.

I love a good photo ATC. Some of my favorite cards are photos.

I sincerely hope this has not cause anyone to be mad at me.

Guess I had better spell things out more next time!

I truly hope this makes sense now. Photos are good.

I take my photo card to a local store and print them off. Then I cut them down to fit an atc card. I have no clue how to size things to send out to this site.

Ruby, there are 2 ways that I use to get things shrunk to the size I want.
Firstly, it is all in your printer properties, when you first go to print something there are options as to what size you want to make the photos, mine gives me a choice from full page through to 36 on one page.

My favourite method of getting things the right size is to copy and paste onto a Word document, then click the corners of the box and drag it to the size you want.. I set my "document" up on my screen so it is the same size as my real sheet of paper, then drag the corners of the image to the size I want..you can draw the box size on your real sheet first and hold it closely to the screen while working the mouse underneath it.

Hope these ideas help.

regards Cee.

I have just worked out how to make my scans look straight and good for the gallery! { too much brain power going towards the cards themselves, not enough spare left to problem solve other things :twitcy: }

Solution: put them in a loose plastic card holder to scan..
How hard was that?

I love this theme...of course anything with flowers is good; especially iris's! However, a friend of mine told me once "all old ladies paint flowers".....dont' know if that's true but it hasn't slowed me down. I look forward to seeing the results of this trade....

Lovely cards that I spotted in the gallery, so I went into your "find all posts" to see which Swap you were in, where I could come ask you about your materials:

What is "massa" paper?
Is the background done with massa paper, as well massa paper for the cut out iris?

lilbad
07-23-2011, 11:28 AM
Not sure if it's Masa or Massa....it's a paper that u wet and then apply wet to watercolor paper with a dilute layer of Elmer's glue. I dropped wet paint on the wet surface and then did negative painting to form leaves. I didn't have any ideas as to what I would use it for, but cut out some atc shapes. When I saw this swap, decided the backgrounds would be good for iris....my fav. flower. Glad u like them, and thanks for the sweet compliments.

Help, I'm need a bit of further instructions. You wet the masa, then apply the wet masa to the background watercolor paper with glue? How do you keep the painting (in your case, of the Iris) on the masa paper, if you need to wet it and then glue it to the background watercolor paper?

lilbad
07-24-2011, 11:55 AM
This is what I did....crumple the masa paper into a ball, unroll it, wet it, spread it out on top of thinned Elmer's glue that is on your watercolor piece. Don't brayer out all the wrinkles...the wrinkles are what make the texture. Then drop watercolor paint in various colors onto the wet massa. The iris' that I painted were done on different w/c paper and then cut out and glued on the dried masa. Does that help?

Hello
Many thanks to you Mary Ann for wonderful cards in swap for mine.

I received a really lovely and accurate botannical illustration of an "Iris versicolor" from Maineatc - thanks very much for your pretty card

I also got a gorgeous water-coloured iris, collaged on lovely hand coloured masa paper from Lilbad - thanks so much for your outstanding work

and finally, Lafaver55, as usual, up to your wonderful tricks with collage of a Japanese antique kimono with irises on it.

Altogether just a wonderful swap to paint - and then to receive wonderful returns - thank you all.
