Printed Object ATC Swap-due August 26th

Number of cards-3/3 or 6/6
Number of players-unlimited BUT must sign up by July 8th
Media-open BUT no embellishments, such as stickers, jewels, swirlies, scrapbooking-
type items....I want the eye to focus on the art that you have created!

I have had this book for awhile and finally took time to study the techniques within.WOW, I am impressed and inspired! The book is Print and Stamp Lab-52 ideas for handmade, upcycled print tools written by Traci Bunkers.
For this swap, you will design your ATC with printed objects, not rubber stamps. You will use objects for printing that are usually used for something else. NOT using fruits, veggies or live objects.

Here is a list of possible printing objects (tools):

rubber bands-wrapped around a brayer or wooden block
pencil grips-the ends make flexible circles....the sides make patterns
furniture leg tips and cups-either concentric circles or crosshatching
lids...from markers...containers....
bottle caps...
corn or bunion cushions...go to Foot Care products...have adhesive & will
stick to wooden block
die cut felt...attach to block or?
sink drainers....can be used for stamping or stenciling
Tiger Balm jar...

bubblewrap.....winebottle bottoms.....mesh garlic bags....scrunched paper towel....from louisezee

If you discover something else that makes a great print, let me know and I'll add it to our list!

You can see samples of object-printed cards in my gallery, labeled Silver Tape Swap or Torn Text Swap.

**********************SWAP CLOSED TO NEW SIGN UPS

06-18-2011, 06:48 PM
I would love to try this out. I was just at Hobby Lobby and they had kids making crafts. They were using everything to make shapes.

06-18-2011, 07:55 PM
Hmm im thinking i would like to try this out ^^ so sign me up ^^

06-18-2011, 08:58 PM
I wanted to host this swap while I was still excited about this technique. the book also explains how to make your own rollers.....some of us do not have access to Michaels or Hobby Lobby. I f you get a long 1 inch dowel and saw it into sections...sand the edges and then put finishing nails in the ends, you have a very workable roller. We had extra wood pieces that my husband cut into various sizes and lengths.
I've also tried printing with buttons. Putting them on a block with gel medium did not work. Well the buttons are there forever, but it does not print well.
My better button block was made with double-sided foam mounting tape. You cover the block with that and then put your buttons on.
One other thing that I'm experimenting with is using muslin for the background instead of paper. It has more give and you can press more effectively with the fabric.

06-18-2011, 09:03 PM
anyway, welcome Jennie and larkawolf to this swap!

06-18-2011, 09:05 PM
and louisezee, too!

06-19-2011, 06:56 AM
I've done some printing on fabric - would love to join you!

06-19-2011, 01:02 PM
Love to have you, SOTO!

06-19-2011, 02:29 PM
I absolutely love doing this with my kids at school, and would love to play. So I am IN IN IN!

06-19-2011, 04:56 PM
Please add me, I would love to be in this swap

06-19-2011, 05:17 PM
Love to have you both...

06-19-2011, 06:19 PM
Sounds like a fun one. How do you feel about printing fruits & veg?

06-19-2011, 06:31 PM
Katelnorth I love using potatoes and making stamps although they only last so long *sigh*

I hope I can bring some neat techniques, and I might even be using live objects for this, is that ok? As long as the paint is no toxic to the animal right?

06-19-2011, 08:33 PM
I'd rather you stuck to nonfruit and vegetables for this swap.

I think live objects aren't for this swap either.

06-19-2011, 10:52 PM
Thats fine with me ^^ I was only thinking about using some random things like from animals not the actual animal, but Ill stick to stuff like erasers and the such ^^

06-20-2011, 12:13 PM
I think I would like to try this!

06-20-2011, 12:14 PM
Thats fine with me ^^ I was only thinking about using some random things like from animals not the actual animal, but Ill stick to stuff like erasers and the such ^^

please elaborate!!! this intrigues me.

06-20-2011, 04:52 PM
Not a problem Nancy - I will print with something other than fruits and veg (though I think I might lemon print for another swap I have coming up... hmm - inspiration!) for this one. There are lots of things out there, just wanted to know the scope before I started printing... Sign me up anyway!

06-20-2011, 05:30 PM
Sign me up please. Sounds like fun!

06-20-2011, 07:39 PM
catladybj--I was planing on using stuff like my cats whiskers(fell out naturally) and some of my lizards paw prints and other things, but since Nancy would appreciate I didnt, I am keeping her wishes and using only stuff like erasers (which I found some in a butterfly and dolphin shape!)

06-20-2011, 11:40 PM
carlady, you find objects that make interesting prints and make cards. I listed some examples and you might find others. You can rub your object across an ink pad or paint it with,or dip in, paint. I've done it all these ways.
Possilbe backgrounds....page from dictionary or another language....acrylic painted ....cardstock....musin or other fabric.....Make sur eyour background is adhered to a sturdy backing such as cardstock.
If you look at examples in my gallery, that mgiht help. Play with materials and then when you make something you like, make it into an ATC!
Remember you are NOT adding scrapbook bits and pieces. Just creating art, not decorating it.

06-21-2011, 01:12 PM
Added TIFFANY, and Katelnorth who kind of got overlooked....could it have been yesterday afternoon when we celebrated Fathers Day a day late and shared a bottle of very good zin from Paso Robles?

06-22-2011, 03:28 AM
Yes!!i would play!

06-22-2011, 03:42 PM
Please add me as I would loveeeeeee to do this swap..

06-22-2011, 06:10 PM
I have finished the cards. It's great to do this!!
I like it...!

06-24-2011, 10:29 AM
Please sign me up. Thanks

06-24-2011, 12:22 PM
Everyone/anyone is welcome to show their cards on the thread, or post them to their gallery.
signing up....

06-24-2011, 08:08 PM
I'm in please. Can't wait to find some objects to use, what an adventure. I made stamps out of cork years ago and I still use them for grungy effects, so I'm looking forward to adding to the collection. Can't wait to see everyone else's techniques, might learn something new! :D

06-25-2011, 11:55 AM
I really like the bubble blowers....also such a good idea to put your impressions on index cards.
I'm printing objects on all the current swaps that I'm participating in....Torn Text swap, silver Tape Swap, and Mixed Media Birds. My MM birds were just posted inmy gallery. Even though they all decided to remain sideways, you can see the printing.

06-25-2011, 12:21 PM
This sounds great! May I join?!

06-25-2011, 10:04 PM
I found a couple of doilies at good will. I painted them and they turned out really pretty. Might try the oposite and paint over them on the card.

06-27-2011, 09:30 AM
Sounds fun count me in

06-27-2011, 09:35 AM
I'll play

06-27-2011, 12:31 PM
If you need inspiration, read the blog from Baronessnz above. she tries some interesting objects.
Added you all, I think.....

06-27-2011, 12:40 PM
I've had that book for about 6 months. I told you about the other 2. You have to sign me up for this swap!!!!

06-29-2011, 04:24 PM
Is there anymore room? Can I join too? Pretty please?

06-29-2011, 08:46 PM
Okay signed up shellyrosebud and the craftaholic. Sign ups are open through July 8th. Then closed, no matter who drops out.

Lafaver55, your cards arrived already, and thanks for the vairety of paper bits!

06-30-2011, 11:01 AM
yipee! I make my own lino blocks, so this will be fun!

06-30-2011, 12:31 PM
Can I join? Claire

06-30-2011, 12:46 PM
o4aclaireism, adding you.....

Printing is fun, no matter what you use.

06-30-2011, 01:05 PM
Would coins and poker chips work?

07-01-2011, 01:53 AM
Hi Nancy - I signed up earlier but my name does not appear on the sign up list. Please add me. Thanks.

07-01-2011, 12:48 PM
Ok here are my cards.
The last 2 didn't come out as well. They are all done with metalic watercolors and the backgrounds were done with cotton balls, 1st one is fork and thread, 2nd is cap to paint and a ribbon rose, 3rd is a doilie, and 4th is a silk flower petal.

07-01-2011, 03:36 PM
Yes, try coins and pokerchips. I have my checkers out but haven't tried them yet.

Thanks for catching that, goze.

And if you remember, put on the back of your card what you used to print with.

07-02-2011, 02:18 AM
I would like to join please.

07-02-2011, 04:09 PM
adding you both.
I think I got the book on the Mainland last year sometime and made myself finally look at it recently. I've dropped my swap participation somewhat so i can spend time exploring object printing.

07-02-2011, 05:52 PM
I'm done, could you send me your addy? Claire

07-03-2011, 02:34 PM
Ok my printed cards and the silver tape cards will go together on Monday.
Thanks so much for hosting. You think up the best swaps

07-05-2011, 12:20 AM
I have a modified block print method using manila folders. Is this acceptable? I would like to participate in this swap.

07-05-2011, 02:00 PM
Are you using manila folders to print? Are you putting them in ink or paint to make your print? If so, do it. I'll add you.

07-05-2011, 03:08 PM
Just so you guys know, I tried printing rubber bands wrapped around a piece of cardboard with both tempera and acrylic paint. I've discovered actually printmaking paint works the best. I am going to try my colored ink pad later today. Very unique and experimental swap!

07-05-2011, 04:35 PM
Question-may we use our created (stamped with objects) art work as a background?
May we add a canceled postage stamp or a color image?
I have completed mine but I feel they need something else. Sorry I can not post them. I am a slow learner with the computer.

07-05-2011, 06:11 PM
ArtistPoetGirl, since its not July 8, to sign up, you're not late!

Maineatc, its refreshing to know that someone else has problems posting pictures. Whenever I do it, I follow my witten instructions and then wonder if it will appear. More practice would probably give me more confidence, but I've entered the age of if-I don't-have-to-do-it,-I-won't!
Yes, I think as long as your object prints are visible, you could add something else.

Nancy, do you still have room for me? I would love to try this one - I need to stretch my brain.

07-05-2011, 11:43 PM
Hi Nancy... I am signing up and hopefully getting my cards completed by the weeks end!

07-06-2011, 01:26 PM
Adding you both. I am still finding it intriguing to see what kind of prints different objects will make.

07-06-2011, 08:25 PM
Alisl, your cards came. Thanks for the host card and postage!

07-07-2011, 04:03 PM
Just sent mine out today. Claire

07-08-2011, 08:27 PM
Cards arrived from Baronessnz and Jennie. thank you both for your host cards.

07-10-2011, 06:41 PM
and more cards from Cameo. thanks for the extra papers!

07-13-2011, 08:25 PM
Today, I found cards from SOTO, o4aclaireims and shellyrosebud. Thanks for the host cards!

07-14-2011, 05:26 PM
TIFFANY186, your cards arrived. thanks for the host. I love the simplicity of your cards.

Joni Owens
07-15-2011, 03:43 PM
Ok, I have a question, because an idea hit my brain today - can the cards be made using a sort of reverse stamping technique rather than stamping on the paper? I've been playing around today laying objects on my paper and then misting with my ink misters and layering another object and misting with another color, etc, finishing with, on one, freehand drawing with white typing correction ink/paint/whatever that stuff is. Would this also work or do I need to stick with making my stamping objects and stamping?

07-15-2011, 06:21 PM
Go with your technique...it sounds interesting....and when I see it in person, I will re read your directions and maybe try it!

And artist-poet-girl, your cards came.

Joni Owens
07-15-2011, 06:30 PM
Cool!! Thanks so much!!

07-17-2011, 06:35 PM
Picked up cards from Maineatc and from butterflywings. thanks for the extra bits and host card.

07-17-2011, 06:37 PM
And thanks for the host card, Lafaver55.

07-19-2011, 12:13 PM
My cards are finished, packed and ready to mail hopefully one day this week. Here are the first three:

77359 77360

Joni Owens
07-19-2011, 12:16 PM
my second three are a little different - I reverse stamped and stamped the base card but it turned out a little darker than I wanted so I added leftover pieces from trimming down the first set to these:

77362 77363

07-19-2011, 12:25 PM
I love the colors!

07-19-2011, 01:27 PM
I am having lots of fun with these, used both ends of a small battery for circles, a rubber band round a glue stick and the edge of cardboard for lines. Also had a go at making my own stamp by cutting out a shape from foam and mounting it on cardboard.

Just love all the cards so far, I have no favourites as they are all great.

07-19-2011, 06:29 PM
Louisezee, your cards arrived, and thanks for the host card!

07-21-2011, 05:31 AM
Cards are ready to post, Could I have your address please. :D

Joni Owens
07-23-2011, 11:42 AM
Nancy, my cards went in the mail this morning.

07-24-2011, 12:52 PM
I have to withdraw from this swap, am so sorry Nancy, just too much to do right now. Sorry.

07-26-2011, 06:09 PM
JoniO, your cards came and thanks for the host cards--examples--and directions. will be trying this soon!

07-27-2011, 08:11 PM
Esew, your cards came today and thanks for the host card!

07-28-2011, 12:26 PM
the book gave me new ideas for printing. I don't think there are cheap brayers anywhere where I live. Actually its hard to find non-cheap ones. I made some rollers from dowels and even one from a tp holder. I also fell in love with pencil grips.

07-30-2011, 05:24 PM
Gerry, your cards arrived. thanks for the dolloar, the host and the stencils!

07-31-2011, 04:57 PM
Thanks for letting me know Nancy :D

Joni Owens
08-01-2011, 01:41 PM
It is a fun process Nancy, I'm thinking on trying it on something bigger when I get room to work - I'd like to try it on cloth.

08-06-2011, 11:33 AM
I've gotten so that I have clothing that I wear out of the house and clothing that I wear at home. The at home stuff has paint and ink and gel medium on it. I have given up on wearing nice things at home....they always end up with paint or glue on them.

08-07-2011, 05:06 PM
there is another interesting swap for printing with objects in the forum. It has a limit of 30 players and there are still spaces left. You can only use metalic ink or paint. I'm using paint chips (another current swap) as backgrounds and the cards are looking good.

08-10-2011, 06:43 PM
Trekaroo, your cards arrived, and thanks for the host card. I like the colors and designs of your cards!

08-12-2011, 11:23 AM
Lovely cards Studioblue, the orange one really stands out, but they are all striking.

08-14-2011, 04:34 PM
Cards off in the mail tomorrow, Nancy - hopefully they will make it in good time. Took me ages to get inspired with this swap, not sure why, but nothing seemed to be working for me. Anyway, I think the background colours on these are a little less vibrant than my scanner has thought they were, but they give the general picture. Objects used to stamp were a cotton reel, empty blister pack from hayfever tablets, punchinella, cotton wool ball, an old darning foot for my sewing machine and the top of a pen lid...

08-16-2011, 07:31 AM
Love your cards Katelnorth, you have been really imaginable with the things used for printing, especially with the sewing machine foot.:D

08-16-2011, 12:50 PM
Goze and Momoruth dropped. Going to the post office tomorrow.

08-17-2011, 09:38 PM
Studio Blue, your cards arrived and thanks for the extra card and stamp!

Attention--a similiar swap just opened in the Forum. Its a stamp and emboss with printing with objects. Is a quick turn around as the host is leaving the country on Oct 7th. If interested, go and read the details, and sign up!

08-19-2011, 06:54 PM
kkwarth, your cards arrived, and thanks for the papers, blanks and small envelopes!

08-20-2011, 10:15 PM
mailed thurs.

08-20-2011, 10:43 PM
We're getting mail Mon, Wed and Friday of this next week. I hope all the cards come.

08-21-2011, 04:56 PM
I offered a printed embossed object swap but cancelled as not enough players signed up soon enough. I really likie the process of embossing printed object images so I want to offer this swap again, maybe November or January. Anyway, I am RAKing everyone in this swap with an ATC which would have fit in the cancelled swap. Perhaps if you see one, you will want to collect some, too.

08-22-2011, 05:10 PM
Catladybj, your cards arrived. thanks for the host card.

08-22-2011, 05:17 PM
I'm opening mail. Creativemeemee, your cards arrived. they are perfect without anything added. I love your big dice. thanks for the host card.

08-22-2011, 05:18 PM
Katelnorth, your cards arrived. thanks for the extra card!

08-22-2011, 06:10 PM
Glad they got there on time. :) And you're welcome.

08-24-2011, 01:09 PM
I know its late but I have to withdrawl.... Life got in the way

08-24-2011, 09:30 PM
since you had the last set of cards, to arrive, your withdrawal means I can send out returns on Friday. Hurray!
Maybe that will be the next thing I do....drink just one more diet coke andturn on the ceiling fan and swap away!

08-25-2011, 12:10 AM
Cards are good to go---even the international ones! My husband worked for the US post office for 30 plus years so he remembers/knows postal rates...everything should have the right postage. (I weigh each envelope on my little WW scale.) I've even done all the iTraders!

I'm always curious to see who the first card receivers are....never seems to be any logic in their delivery. They go out on Friday and maybe will in mailboxes by Tuesday? Monday?

08-29-2011, 03:57 PM
Returns arrived today! - Many thanks to swappers Artist Poet Girl, esew123 and alisl, and to NancyL, our fabulous host, for a fun experiment and for the cool embossed printed object RAK!
You Rocks and itrader have been given.

08-29-2011, 11:39 PM
Each of you is receiving an extra card. I called it a RAK(random act of kindness). I don't expect iTrader or rep points for it.
I sent you each an embossed object print so you know what that would look like, in case a swap in the future calls for embossed printed objects.

09-01-2011, 09:11 AM
Wow, I have soon received the returncards in The Netherlands:)
Thanks for hosting Nancy and for the RAK.(w/rubberbands,corn..shions??,pencilgrip)

Thanks too to: Baronessnz, Shellyrosebud, Maineatc, Louisezee, Butterfly Wings, and Lafaver55 - all of you came up with some genius ideas for stamping!!
