Swap Due Date – August 12
Signup/withdraw date - July 31
Number of Cards - 3 for 3
Number of participants - 12

Because places of worship fascinate me, I've chosen the theme for my very first swap!

ATC size photos of the interior or exterior of places of ANY place worship are what I'm looking for in this swap. Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Orthodox, Buddhist, Pagan -- if people worship there, it's welcome in the swap!

Please be sure your photos
are mounted on card stock or other sturdy backing, and enclosed in a sleeve, AND
have your name, user name, name and location of your place of worship of the on the back.

Post your photos in the thread so we can all "ooh" and "ahh" over them and PM me for my address when you are ready to mail your ATCs.

Postage:

US players should enclose enough postage to cover your returns.

International players should enclose an address label; I'll cover your returns.

Returns

Once you receive your cards, please remember to leave iTrader for me as well as Rep Points (the "you rock!" button in the post) for members you received cards from and to post to the thread. We all like to know where our ATC goes!

Are outdoor places of worship acceptable for this swap? Since you said places of worship and not churches or buildings, I hope so. I plan to go to the Tibetan Cultural Center in Bloomington, Indiana this weekend and there are prayer wheels and a little Buddha shrine at the foot of a tree. People give prayers etc at these spots so I regard them as places of worship for Buddhists. I'll go and take pics regardless. If you'd like me to post them here or in my gallery so you can check them out before I mail, no problem.

Absolutely, and thanks for asking! ANY place of worship - the more unusual, the better. Bloomington is lovely; the Tibetan restaurant's really good!

Am looking forward to seeing your photos!

Lol, which Tibetan restuarant-Snow Lion or Cafe Django? There's a third one, the name of which I forget. I love Bloomington-went to undergrad and law school there. Hope to move there with my boyfriend in the near future.

I am bound and determined to take new photos for this swap. However, on Saturday when I was out taking pics for swaps and sundry other interests. I filled up my 2gig card. REALLY??

I got a premo parking spot that already had a half hour on it - took one, ONE! photo and got the dreaded message, MemoryFull!

Oh well, mem, please pm if you have any favorites. I am off all next week (forced vacation), state employee. I do have lovely National Cathedral photos I would love to use here as well.

Really, Blanche?! You filled a 2gig card? And had a great parking place, too? What a shame on both counts.

Any of the older Charleston churches will be great; maybe The Cathedral Church of St Luke and St Paul. And the National Cathedral?! Would love it if you included that one!

will look in my photos to see if I have a good shot of St Peter & St Paul in St Petersburg, Russia. . . .

The other day the skies were so blue and I was close to two small-town NC churches that have meaning for me, so I snapped a shot or two.

Here (https://picasaweb.google.com/memhill/DropBox?authkey=Gv1sRgCLTjxevo2KLgOw#5624095376136 819538) is the church where I was married and my daughter baptized, and

here (https://picasaweb.google.com/memhill/DropBox?authkey=Gv1sRgCLTjxevo2KLgOw#5624095913973 389810) is the church in the cemetery where my in-laws are buried.

I have a question..I have a photo of a myrter (St Sylvan) he is in a box in St Blaise church in Dubrovnik Croatia. I don't know if I am out of line or if this would be a bit morbid for some? I thought it may be interesting as he is in a place of worship. If ok i will send him along.

Mal,
it's not offensive to me; how about we let some of the other swappers chime in and then decide? Thanks for asking!

ceejay
07-06-2011, 08:19 AM
The martyr is what makes the photograph different. I say it's art and should be allowed. After all aren't most altars topped by Jesus on a Cross ? ? ?

Ibus
07-06-2011, 04:27 PM
Doesn't bother me, it's a place of worship to some people. Stonehenge and Avebury are the same! ;)

Ibus
07-06-2011, 05:07 PM
Hah! Thought I'd be clever, my youngest daughter went to Prague for a wedding, so I asked her to take some photos of churches for me.
She's left me hundreds of photos and not named them, so except to say they're in Prague, I know nothing about them!

memhill
07-06-2011, 06:00 PM
Malicea, looks like 3 "ayes" to me and no "nays" so far.

Ibus, interesting dilemma; maybe a Google images search is in order?

malicea10
07-06-2011, 07:28 PM
Thank you ladies! I had a pm from PQ wanting a copy too so I guess not as morbid as I thought. (Considering that is supposed to be the real body of the St)

Here are my cards for your swap Mem. I hope I followed instructions properly:huh:

Church in Santorini Greece, St Sylvan from St Blaise Church in Dubrovnik Croatia, Mosque in Agadir Morocco (2009), and the tiniest church I have ever seen just outside Innsbruck Austria. All others 2005.

memhill
07-06-2011, 09:49 PM
Those international places of worship are great, Malicea!! If your name and the name of the place is on the back, sounds like you followed directions.

Thanks so much for posting to the thread; am looking forward to seeing them in person!

07-07-2011, 11:43 AM
Malicea10 ... ditto what Ibus said ... the little church is sooo comfy. I just discovered a beautiful cathedral (never noticed it before) however, I was caught cameraless (still haven't figured how to upload from my cell phone ... I've made myself a note to get back there and photograph it --- would be gorgeous at sunset (which would glow from behind)
workin' on it.

memhill

A sunset shot sounds great ceejay, if you can work it out.

I upload to Picasa from my phone, if you have gmail, you can have Picasa, too. The other upload options on my phone are AllShare, Kodak, facebook and Snapfish. I have to open the gallery of photos, tap menu and then share. Maybe that will help you.

If you don't have gmail and want an account, PM me and I can send an invitation to you.

I did a search for St Sylvan and found a site about the "uncorrupted" bodies of saints. Something I have never heard of before. A close up of his "body" is very gruesome. I don't object to the photo at all, but this is something totally new to me. However, it's not a picture I would want.

memhill
07-07-2011, 10:54 PM

memhill
07-07-2011, 10:55 PM
lini,

lini
07-07-2011, 11:04 PM
I had that wrong - it's "incorrupt" bodies. This site lists and pictures many "incorrupt" saints and I found it very interesting. It includes the close up of St. Sylvan. It also gives a history of each saint listed.

It's not morbid at all. The people in that area really believe that this saint is someone to pray to.

Mem,
If the 12 slots are full, can the 6:6 option come back ? Learning all kinds of stuff here!!

memhill
07-10-2011, 06:06 PM
Blanche,
if the 12th slot stays empty, one person can send in six. As it's my first, I can only have 36 items to swap. I think I can put your name twice if you want to send in six. I'm learning a lot, too!

This is SUCH a wonderful swap!
The photos posted so far are amazing and truly show a reverence true to the word, WORSHIP.

Mem, i would love to have that last spot in addition to the one I have- you are so gracious! Since there is still time to the drop date, let's wait for anyone else to fill it and if not I would be honored to fill it with more cards! We live close enough that I can easily send another set of cards.

Have fun in Texas!!

Well I've driven all over Chandler, AZ. We have some of the ugliest churches ever built. If the congregations ever leave they can turn it into a Walmart. They are all this big box construction. But I did find a few that had some really nice asthetics. I really wanted to do all stained glass, but the churches are always locked if it isn't Sunday. So MY DH is downloading them now and we'll see what I can do with what I have.

memhill
07-23-2011, 04:28 PM
Oh, my, Jennie! Am sure your photos will be perfect for the swap.

PS - when I was very young, we were part of a group of 18 families that founded a new church. For a time we met in the lobby of the local bowling alley and later we were lucky enough to get "permanent temporary" space in the office building of a closed prison (or vice versa). Two very strange places to worship!

Jennie
07-23-2011, 08:32 PM
Well I'm a firm believer that you can worship anywhere. These are the 4 pretty churches in Chandler, Arizona. When I was little there were still a cathedral and a mission that had been built by the Spanish. San Xavier the mission is still very well cared for but sadly the catherdal in down town Tucson is closed as well as the semenary. Those buildings were probably very expensive to keep up due to their age.

Blergh! I cannot make my photos print from my computer with the appropriate color.

And tried to go to FedEx/Kinkos but they don't print the output in 3.5 x 2.5 or on 8.5 x 11 photo paper, so I could cut them out. We tried glossy paper but it sucked.

Dang, I've cropped them so nicely to that size. *sigh* ;)

So now I'll un-crop and print at as 4x6 and crop them after and hope it comes out close to what I intended.

Aren't you all glad I shared that with you? LOL!

P.S. I think this means I need to go get a new printer. Yep, sure of it. LOL!

HHc ... actually, it's kind of nice to hear that other people have problems too! LOL

HHC, sorry you're having trouble; but a new printer could be sweet!
I get 4 x 6 prints from Walgreeens because I have an old printer, too!

HHC

LOL! My printer sometimes prints photos beautifully. But when I NEED them for something specific, it gives me fits. And wastes a lot of photo paper and ink. :err:

I just checked it to the thread. What great pictures everyone-St. Sylvan, Stonehenge, and all the churches.

There was so much traffic and stuff going on at the Greek Festival, that I never got to take pics there. We did get to tour the church and the interior is as beautiful as the exterior. Lots of stained glass windows and pictures of Mary and the saints done in mosaics and gilt. No one else was taking pictures there so I didn't either. Didn't want to be an unwelcome guest!

I did realize that I already have several great pics of churches in Chimayo, New Mexico and churches in Santa Fe from my trips there that I can use. I did also go to the Tibetan Cultural Center and took some pics of a Buddha shrine, their stupa, and some praye wheels they set up there. Hope you decide to do this swap again, Memhill. I already have more than enough for a second set.

So, despite all the swaps I have been in before, I have never participated in a photo swap before. I have photo paper, cardstock, and photo editing software. Any tips on putting these together so they are nice and study? My photo paper is gloss. Is matte better? Any tips are appreciated or if there is a thread or Internet article out there, please point me to it. Thanks!

I print my photos on glossy paper, cut them out (my printer has a page that will print eight ATC sized photos on one page) and stick a piece of cardstock on the back. Add my details, pop them in a sleeve and they're good to go!

memhill
07-29-2011, 03:12 PM
GoldenWolf,
it sounds like you'll be sending some great photos! I have no advice for printing them, I order prints from Walgreens and crop them to ATC or Inchie size. Sounds like Ibus gave you great advice, though!

Will think about Part 2; thanks for suggesting it

Dear All,
the closing date for our swap is two weeks from today!

I'm going to Scotland next week (:jiggy:), so I'll PM everyone my address before I go.

Isn't that the way of things, HHC?!

HHC
07-29-2011, 08:49 PM
mem, I mailed off my ATC's to you yesterday.
By the way, I found a local print shop with a computer (.25 per minute) where I could print directly onto photo paper (.99) without having to readjust. Made me a happy girl! :D

Thanks for letting me know, HHC. Sounds like a good deal at the print shop!

arlie707, your gorgeous cards came in today's mail!

Did you go to Durham? The NC photo looks like Duke University Chapel to me.

I'm happy with my Lexmark All-in-one. Its an x5470 but no doubt there are newer ones out there now. Wasn't expensive either, about 50.

Helen, I just got a new HP Deskjet 3052A Printer/Scanner/Copier and although I haven't used it much, so far so good. Makes nice clear copies. I wasn't going to buy another HP, but the price (I think it was $69 at Walmart) helped me decide. It's wireless too.

I've been going through pictures of my trips to Ireland looking for pictures for your swap Mem. Found some interesting pictures (especially ones of Lil, but I don't worship her! LOL).

LOL! It was, but I'm still looking for a new printer/scanner. Anyone have recommendations? I have an HP Officejet all in one right now.

I had two HP in a row, tried an Epson, borrowed a Lexmark, and I'm back to HP. HP has changed up their ink system and the cartridges are more like the Epson now (individual colors instead of a big cartridge of several colors, easy to put in & take out). And it still prints faster than any of them.

I just replaced our all in one printer. I did a whole bunch of research and decided on the HP Officejet 6500A Plus. The office jet worked better for me because my husband prints music, and I like pictures. Also as I've said before if it doesn't do dishes it's not all in one. Just putting that out there

How long does a thread stay active after that?

Round 2 is posted, if you want to play again!!

Ibus
08-24-2011, 05:27 PM
If all returns are accounted for, then hit a report button and ask a Mod to archive it for you. It won't matter if people want to do You Rock still because that button stays active.
