Have Rubicoil, Will Bind!

I’ve been participating in Chunky Books for several years now and have always wanted to host my own, bind the books and send a completed book back to each participant. Now I have my own Rubicoil and am able to do just that.

The theme is fish! Any interpretation of this fishy theme is allowed. They can be funky, fried, fresh water, ocean fish and even frozen! Be inventive, colorful, and above all CHUNKY! (Yes, I do have a thing about fish.) I believe that fish in art is beautiful. (Add cats to that and it can’t be beat. But this is not about cats. I do love cats though.)

So…fish! Choose watercolor, collage, digital, whatever your favorite medium, and make 20 4X4 pages. They can be all the same or all different. Be sure to add a little art with the swap name, your screen name, and contact info on the back of each page and send them to me along with a large return address label. Do not send an envelope, as I will provide packaging for the returns. Please include $8.00 to cover binding supplies and return postage.

Embellish as you wish, but please keep all embellishments at least ½” from the left edge, as that is where I will punch the holes for binding. These will be spiral bound and I will make a front and back cover for each book.

Oh thanks hon!! I'm scanning all the outlines so I can make a coloring book out of them later. I printed one for my daughter age 8 last night and she had a BLAST with it. Once I have completed all the outline I'm going to make the coloring book a PDF file. If you wanna copy for your kids just pm me your email address to send it to.

lol no I'm now out of Ideas lol. It will take me a month to kick back in lol... I have 15 so far 6 are complete 9 needs to be colored and 3 of them need backgrounds. .. The last 5 will have to wait....... lol Jena

i've not done a chunky book yet. what are you guys going to use for your base?

I usually use 140 lbs watercolour paper. For cardstock, I think that most people use 110 lbs or use 80 lbs but double up.

I usually use heavy card stock, but sometimes I use photo paper and double it so it's photo side is on front and back. I also love watercolor paper. I hope we have a variety of bases, but all should be at least as thick as cardstock for durability.

I use Bristol 100lb to draw on. Spray glue"Craft Bond" on Heavy card stock and press them together. I clear coat my work with workable fixative.

Heymaggie, I've been using matboard which I cover with paper but now I'm seeing discussions about Bristol paper, etc. which is still much thinner than matboard - I'm not underway with this yet so I'll use a thinner paper if that's what I'm supposed to be doing - I guess I should have looked into what a rubicoil is, huh? :err:

Bristol paper by it's self is to thin . I glue a piece of card stock to the back of mine.

Artcards, matboard is what they use to do the matting on pictures you get framed professionally - it's kind of thinner than a kid's board book - I punch holes using a crop-a-dile. Lucky I had only started on my first page for this, I've got a feeling that rubicoil might need thinner paper - okay, I'm going to google rubicoil now.:unsure:

Question on matboard. Can you punch a hole through it ?

I tried to punch holes in matboard with the rubicoil and it was way too thick. So please don't put any matboard within 1/2" of the left edge where the holes need to go. Matboard embellishments elsewhere on the cards will be fine.

Really, as long as they are not just plain white, it's your call. Just be sure to put all your info on the back and add some kind of art or color or background.

This being my first experience with chunky books....
Darn, I should of waited to finish those first two pages. I used thick board from an old game I bought at the thrift store for my bases and I'm afraid they are WAY TOO THICK for Maggie's machine to handle! Not a problem though! I'll just save them for another chunky book.
I have six drawings done already (...that's not counting the two already mounted on too thick of board!) I'm using lightweight watercolor paper for the sharpie drawings (no clue on it's proper name-it is actually paper originally used in an album) and thin chipboard for the cut paper drawings. I'm loving this theme! Fishes are so much fun to create!
Do these pages all have to be hand drawn, painted, ect or is anything allowed so long as the embellishments aren't too thick? I'm thinking they will all have elements of hand drawing on them but I want to know what my options are. Coming up with 20 different fishes is going to be a challenge. But a challenge I'm looking forward to!

Hand drawn is not a requirement at all. Use the medium you prefer or mix it up. Even digital is allowed in chunky books. Embellishments can be thick or thin as long as they are 1/2" from where the holes go on the left edge. Your pages can be all the same or different. Your choices are boundless!

Yes, that's right. Four inches by four inches is the total size of each page.

I love your pages! They have a kind of underwater look to them. I think we will get the full 20 to sign up, but you can wait till after April 15th to make sure and then just make however many we have signed up. We already have 15 and that will make a very good sized book if we don't get the full 20.

Loralou - the chunkiness normally refers to all the extra bits that are added to the sides of the pages. The pages themselves are generally no thickers than sturdy card, otherwise it's too hard to bind them all up as a book.

I have been quite busy with my fishes. I have only 2 pages left to start on. I have 12 that are done except for their danglies and the other 6 need backs finished and danglies added.
I'd show you all some more of them but my scanner is feuding with the computer at the moment. We are planning a fixing of that fued this weekend so perhaps at the first of the week I can post some pics of pages done.
This has been a very fun adventure into fishland and I can't wait to get a completed book back!

My pages took a different turn than most that I have seen...........now I'm wondering.........the fish aren't exactly the main focus of the page:err: I call them "Go Fish".

It came from a quilt pattern that I had, and I adopted it from a 12 inch size to the 4 inch size.

Hi everyone! I wanted to remind you all that Sunday is June 1st, the due date for this swap. Since it will take me a couple of weekends to get all 20 books punched and bound, I will accept pages thru June 7th. I would like to have all the pages punched before the end of the day on Saturday the 7th and then I will have Sunday the 8th and both Saturday and Sunday the next weekend to bind all the books. Then I will try to get them all mailed out the following week, by the 18th if at all possible.

I voted for getting my pages back unbound because my pages are all almost the same. The fish may change, or the beading's position, but there's not much variety other than that, they were all cut out of the same frozen pizza box, so I don't think anyone would like two of my pages in their book.
I thought I could use the extra pages for personal trades.
But then -I'd gladly accept the other solution. I just hope it is not a problem for you :)

And of course it is not a problem for me to wait till all the pages show up. I sent my pages almost two months ago, what harm can do a couple of weeks more?! :cool:

OK! All the books are completed and ready to package up for mailing. I already had the packaging for the international participants so I took them to the post office today and they are on their way.
