Definition of Mixed Media Art Journal (for this swap): Each spread should be worked in whatever medium is most comfortable for the artist, except when the book owner requests a specific medium. Examples: mixed media collage, acrylics, drawing, watercolor, etc. Use one medium or several, just make it your best work.


The rules that will keep us all happy (from Book Journal Guidelines (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10827)).

You Promise that you will see this through to the end – no flaking allowed!
You are willing and able to do your very best work
You will mail on time – the 1st of each month.
You must ship ten journals around the world using MANDATORY tracking/Delivery Confirmation – no media mail
If something unforeseen (major major stuff not just getting behind) please PM me and we will work something out.

Purchase your moleys,- they are appox. 3.5”x5.5” – pick out a theme - fill out and decorate the first non-accordion pages with your name, address, and travel plan. You can find them at Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Moleskine-Japanese-Album-Pocket/dp/8883701046/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313247102&sr=8-1) and also at MoleskineUS.com (http://www.moleskineus.com/japanesebook.htm).
You may decorate the cover or not.
Then, the first 3 accordion pages are all yours.
This is a good time to establish your theme and color scheme – this will give your fellow artist a better sense of your theme.
Each artist is to create a three page layout in each journal received – Please do only your very best work

Optional – include a little something extra in the back pocket of the journal for the artists working on your journal – art paper, ATC, signature card, small charm,bookmark, etc. This is just for fun – some of members want to play, but no pressure on anyone to participate.

Remember to mail on TIME and use first class mail with Mandatory tracking/delivery Confirmations (post DCN) - use a well padded bubble envie, sturdy box or a small Flat Rate Box - for $5.20 to anywhere in the US, Priority Mail shipping takes just 2-3 days.

When I say mixed media, I really mean the entire journal. I'd like each artist to do what's most comfortable for them, whether it's collage, painting, drawing, a combination of techniques, etc. I think when artists are comfortable in their technique, it really shows. :yes:

Shipping weight as per Amazon.com is 4.8 oz., but that's the brand-new blank journal, before pages are added. It gets heavier--mine finished one is about 6-8 oz. easy.

The letters are leftover from assigning the rotations and I left them. Each list starts with October, where the owner sends out to the next person.

I did have 1 question! About the little gift for the artist that works on your journal, do you send something for the next artist each time you mail out a journal? Or do you send something in your book for each artist to get out when it gets to them? Hope I typed the way my mind is thinking lol!

If you want to play the "extras" game, we found (in group 12) that it was easiest to include your extras with your own journal. You can label them (like I did) or you can leave them blank and let people choose randomly.

The other thing I did was to crochet a cover for each journal that came my way. (I've been doing a lot of stash busting lately, and it takes me less time to crochet a cover than it does to create the art spread!)

I didn't really do extra's with the #12 group, but really wanted to. I was just so busy just getting the moley finished. My time is pretty limited. I plan to send out a "surprise" to each member of that group as I complete them. That gives me more time and takes the pressure off for me so I can actually enjoy creating the gifts. All that to say that I'm sure they'll be special and appreciated whenever they are received. I'm not sure what I'll do with this group.

Yeppers. The first 3 pages accordion style. Draw, collage, paint, etc. Whatever suits your fancy.

The covers I made are in my gallery....well, the ones I remembered to snap pics of. They are basically bags or jackets that the journal traveled in. They go on top of whatever was on the cover.

When I did my Zetti moley, I started with a couple of coats of gesso to prime the cover. I then used hobby paint in a bright red, rubber stamps, alcohol markers, etc. to create my cover. It's also in my gallery.

All the moley stuff goes in the journal/chunky books traded gallery. :D

Just a word of caution to those decorating the black cover on the moley: you'll want to keep it flat so it's easier to work in the pages. I know that should seem like common sense, but I feel that if I don't say it, raised embellishments may come into play. :eek:

After thinking about my travel log and how to best work it, I realized that I am *going* to turn my journal and work the tree over the first two pages so that it's "sideways" when you open the front cover.

Don't forget that when you're working in the journals, usually you can work either up-and-down (turn the book so the pages open down) or side-to-side on your given spread. This can add interest in itself.

Of course, as the owner, you CAN request a certain orientation for your journal....or that a certain orientation NOT be used. Just something to keep in mind.

Huh????? I'm confused. Aren't we doing it like in #12? I thought our travel log was on the first two non-accordian pages. Then we also decorated the first 3 accordian pages of our own moley to set the theme. I'm not doing anything else until I have it all spelled out.

Your initial spread is the first two pages just inside the front cover (where you've already worked), the back of the "if found return to" page, and the next three pages--the first three of the accordion pages. That means you're working a two-page spread and a four-page spread in your own journal.

If it helps, look at your journal's travel log. Go to the END of your journal and open up the accordion pages to the backsides. Take a pencil and write each artist's user name on the backs of her 3-page spread, starting with the person who mails the journal back to you and working up the list toward the front of your journal.

You can write on the back if you wish, but there are no requirements for the backs of the pages. In goatgoddess's journal for Group 12, I wrote out the entire poem I used in the background. It's really up to you, in your book and on the pages you create in others' books. :)

Beautiful pages alanabannana ..giggle.. you did the same thing I did on your page listing the names, you did not put them in order so if anyone is going by your book it may go to the wrong person first ..giggle..

What I did was go by the list A, B, C, etc. then yesterday morning I woke up at 5 am wide eye realising what I did so I went and white it all out with gesso and listed the names correctly, even number them, so people would know who was next on the list you see my balloons went everywhere so it isn't that clear who was next in line ..giggle.. I'll post pictures this weekend. I want to get the 3rd page done before I post....

Just wanted to post a friendly tip, since we are starting to receive or are almost ready to mail out journals.

When you're working in someone else's journal, please take the time to mask off your three pages so that you avoid getting paint, glue, glitter, or what-not on the following pages, but especially important to protect the art on the previous pages.

Ways to mask off your pages:


Cut a piece of paper (packing, kraft, parchment, etc; something thick enough to withstand your medium), leaving a window just large enough for your three pages to peek through. Use low-tack painter's tape to adhere your mask to your workspace, over the journal you are working on.
Make your art as tip-in pages and glue the pages down once they are complete. This is especially useful for those who are worried they will "ruin" someone else's book. Also, some mediums and/or themes work better as tip-ins.
Use a sheet of paper (again, something that will withstand your medium) under the moley, then tape wax paper--make sure the wax paper is tight--over the pages around your spread area.

If you have any other masking suggestions that have worked well for you in the past, please share!!

Catscradle I made a wax paper sleeve that slides over 3 accordian pages at a time. I pull the wax sleeve down so I can work on my pages saving the rest of the pages. So far it has been working pretty good.

Front: I'm not sure what to do? Are you all applying Gesso to the front?

I'm planning a simple kind of cover but I'm planning to use several thin coats of glossy gel medium to cover the artwork.

On my cover, I used two coats of gesso followed by three coats of acrylic color. (I mixed three paints--one glitter--to get the color I wanted. More coats meant the glitter shows better.) Just before I add my snow couple, I'll seal the entire cover with a thin coat of Diamond Glaze.

Just finished my cover page/travel log. I'll post pics tomorrow when the sun is up again. I'm very pleased with the way it turned out, even though it's totally different from what I had originally planned!!!

I have a question Catscradle! I have been having problems with my computer ( know is not the time to buy a new one ) and have been getting online mostly with my iphone. I am still trying to figure out how to upload pictures from the phone, I did it once but can't remember what I did lol. Do we have to post pictures each month of the journal pages we do? I will keep trying just wanted to check on that!
Posting pictures is not a requirement, especially if you're having issues. I'm sure whoever gets the journal after you would be happy to post your spread for you. ;)


I mailed my journal out to you today Cat. I mailed right after school and forgot to bring a zip lock to put it in so it is not wrapped. If I waited, I was not going to be able to mail till Wed and I didn't want to be late. Could you please wrap it for me before you send it again.

Life has thrown us an unexpected curve and my 9 y/o is in the hospital after an emergency appendectomy. Chatty, that means I won't be mailing Monday, as I'm at the hospital with him. We're not sure how long he'll be in the hospital.

i really apologize but mine is going to be late getting out. our house officially goes on the market today and as this was not something we were planning on at all, Im up to my eyeballs in packing and staging so the agent can take pics and such. ive got my cover almost there but nothing else. i may end up just leaving the rest to decorate later and just sending it on. otherwise ill try to do a little at a time this week and get it out by Friday. so very sorry. i really did not expect this sharp turn in my life.

I'm running behind too. My friend is having surgery tomorrow and I have her four plus my four until Wednesday. It's a bit crazy here. I hoped to mail today before they got here, but it didn't work out. I'll have my hubby mail it out tomorrow.

Thanks for letting me know about the delays. Sometimes life just really does get in the way of the things we want to do.

Update on my son: he's walking better and having less pain. The biggest issue we've run into is his bladder. Since he was on morphine all day yesterday, his bladder is still not sending the "full" message to his brain, so we've had to put him on a schedule so he doesn't get painfully full. He's grateful for this schedule, as it causes him less pain.

Del is overnight at the hospital with him tonight and tomorrow, so I'll be able to get some things caught up at the house.

I can do zetti anystyle, so if you keep the color scheme its ok. Its fun to challange yourself and others sometimes. I just personally love zetti cause of the crazy colorfullness (is that a word ??:embarrassed:) and the openness.

I hope inspiration strikes you soon, I wish I could start it for you :D I know I was running behind, but I sat down looked up images online, especially Teesha's journal pages and just went for it.

id much rather be working on it than packing up my house. im really under the gun though to get it done so it can go on the market. 18 years worth of stuff is a lot to pack and organize. hoping to have all but the cleaning done by monday. have to figure out how to keep my art stuff handy but be able to hide it away when prospective buyers come through. ugh! never done this before and already dont want to do it again.
