Rotation Swap Policies
1. Groups will be composed of no more than six people in each.
2. Group members may join no more than two circle journal/rotation swap groups at a time.
3. To join a group, you must have a trader rating of +15 and have successfully participated in three swaps.

Other Pertinent Information
- If a player gets behind and the circle members are uncomfortable about leaving a negative iTrader, the Host shall, after notification to AFA staff of their intent, leave a negative iTrader for the delinquint player upon approval from AFA staff provided that the player:
- has not responded to PM's from the Host despite logging in at AFA
- has not posted to the thread for (2) weeks

Limited sign ups for first-time participants. Individuals new to circle journals at ATCsforALL.com can only sign up for one journal group initially. After the successful completion of their group, they are welcome to sign up for multiple groups but must check with a Moderator before signing up for more than three(3).

Please ask questions BEFORE you sign up.

Because these are treated the same as Pick-A-Themes (PAT) each person that completes a deco page is entitled to a TRADER RATING. Likewise, if a person does not fulfill their obligation to their partner a Negative Rating is posted if one partner sends and is received, but never received a deco from their partner.

Rotation Group Participants
As a participant, you are required to
--check in with your Rotation Group at least once a week
--report to group when you will be away from net or out of town and where you stand on decos at that time
--report when decos are mailed (it is suggested that you photograph the stamped envelope containing the page with the recipient's address for verification of mailing)
--report when you receive your deco and from whom
--notify the group and your partner if you cannot mail on time
--notify your next trading partner, if you fall behind, not to create or mail a deco to you until you are caught up.

Note: If you do not post to your group thread or to a Group Host for more than two (2) weeks, the Group Host may report you to the Moderators and your membership in the Circle Journals/Rotation Groups will go on suspension. Your name will be taken off the rotation and decos will not be sent to you. NO EXCEPTIONS. We expect active participation in all the groups.

* You will be notified to PM your Journal Group Host with your FULL contact information (Name, mailing address, email address, and all telephone numbers).

Group Members and Themes:

catscradle - Monochromatic Purple (any subject - no clowns; use any combination of colors in purple family)

All righty!! If you're already in one moley group, you can join this group as well. However, if you're in 2 moley groups already, you'll have to wait for the next round.

I'm up for the Deco Swap Group. Who's gonna join me? Room for 5 more!

Once you've been accepted to the group (there's a lot I have to check), please start thinking about how you want to do your Deco.

You can make a shaped Deco, or a basic square or rectangle. Your cover should be somewhat sturdy, but doesn't have to be chunky-page sturdy. The cover should reflect your chosen theme.

This group will be mailing entire books. Each player will decorate a two page spread, with their info on one of the pages.

When you make your Deco book, you should include 14 pages between your covers if you want to use a 2-page spread, 12 if you plan on using the front cover and first page. You--the owner--will decorate the covers (front/back) on the outside. You may decorate your first page (after the front cover) or leave it blank.

Please have your mailing address somewhere on your Deco--this is usually done on one of the covers.

Questions? Please ask!

Questions? Please ask!

I have a bunch of questions :twitcy: :D

I've been intruiged by these groups for quite some time now -- done a circle journal once and LOVED it. However, I'm unsure what medium is accepted and all, is it just handdrawn/handpainted or can other media be used as well? And does it have to be the accordion style moley or can it be a 'normal' moleskine booklet with normal pages as well? Also, since I've read something about the moleys being sent with tracking/delivery confirmation, I guess that kinda rules out nonUS/Canadian participants, as that would add quite a bit to the postage costs etc?

This can be any media chosen by each artist. Also, this is not a Moleskine circle group. It's a Deco group, where each artist makes their own book that gets sent out. If using shapes for the covers, the pages should be the same shape as the cover.

Generally, tracking/delivery confirmation is recommended in these groups because of the amount of time and effort put into them by each artist. International participants are welcome, as everyone in the group mails to each other once.

What exactly is a Deco? From what you said to Craftyvox, some kind of blank book that could be any shape?

Thanks for the answers and my apologies for confusing the moley vs deco!! I'd love to participate some day, but I just checked the costs of tracking/delivery confirmation for international shipping and ouch, my student-wallet can't really cover such expenses for the time being. But, come 2012 I should be back in the workforce again so I'm going to keep my options open till then :)

If you take a look at the Deco Buddy List (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20899) there are some examples there.

Basically, they are collaborative art journals. You make your book from art papers, usually single signature if you sew your binding, and then decorate the covers. It gets sent out--some are left on their own until complete, going from one person to the next--and returned to the owner when complete. In this case, you'll be working in 5 different deco books on whatever theme chosen by the owner.

These differ from the Moleskine groups due to time taken--this swap is much shorter--and the type of book.

I'd love to do this! Please sign me up.
As for a theme, let me think for just a day or so. I've been trolling for a Moley group to form (#16, I presume), yet this sounds similar and just as exciting.

Cat's Cradle

Welcome aboard, ScrapPea! No worries about the theme quite yet. Once we get the group full (total of 6 on this one), we'll get a new thread. That's when you'll really need to think about your theme. :D

I'd love to sign up but I'm in a Moley group for the first time. It won't be finished until next April. I don't think we're allowed to sign up for more than one at a time. Are we? Or would a Deco group be under a different heading?

Cat's Cradle
09-26-2011, 03:33 PM
You are correct about the restriction. For first time book journal rotation swaps, you are limited to one. Decos fall under the same restriction as moleys.

After this one is finished, I'll probably start another deco group.

Charlie Brown
09-26-2011, 04:12 PM
Oh this looks like a lot of fun! I'm new to this, can you tell me the time commitment? 5-6 months? How much time would one typically have to work on a book before sending it off to the next player?

Cat's Cradle
09-27-2011, 10:59 AM
It's about a 5 month commitment. Since it's a two page spread, we'll probably do 2-3 weeks to work once the book is received.

Also, unlike the Moley exchanges, these little books won't have tip-in pages. Each artist works directly on the pages of the deco books, so it's important to use quality art papers (i.e. mixed media, watercolor, etc.) for the pages of the books. I suggest no lighter than around 100# weight.

Part of what this thread is for is to hash out all the details so everyone is on the same page, so to speak.

Charlie Brown
09-27-2011, 05:25 PM
Great, that sounds reasonable to me! More questions then! What size would I make my book - I know they can vary some, but what is average or what is expected for this group? What about the number of sheets in the signature? Is it 14 unfolded sheets - sorry I'm not quite understanding that part -can give more details so that I can get a better idea?

Cat's Cradle
09-27-2011, 06:38 PM
I would say probably no larger than 4"x6" for this group. An accordion moley is 3.5"x5.5", so that would be comparable.

As for the pages, that's 14 pages....7 sheets folded. If you can't do them all in one signature (or however you want to bind your deco), you can always to 2 signatures with 4 sheets each.

The 14 is if you want this deco to go just this round. You can always add more pages than the minimum.

Charlie Brown

These are not Moleskine or other commercially made books; they are hand-made books. If you want to make your deco in an accordion style, that's fine. But they're probably easier to make using signatures and binding the signatures together.

Unlike the Moley exchanges, these little books won't have tip-in pages. Each artist works directly on the pages of the deco books, so it's important to use quality art papers (i.e. mixed media, watercolor, etc.) for the pages of the books. I suggest no lighter than around 100# weight.

So an 8"x12" sheet folded...7 folded, equaling 14, need to bind myself. Okay!!

Please communicate as to what the next step will be.

Alright! No new thread needed, as Carole changed the thread title for us!

Now, I need to know about your themes and when we're going to mail out these little gems.

Carole just reminded me that because we are mailing books, we'll need to do a RR mailing.

Round Robin (RR) mailing: each person mails to someone different each month.

5 of the participants are in the US, and 1 in the UK. If we do RR mailing, I'll need to come up with a rotation schedule that has each of us mailing to the each other participant once. Unfortunately, Shirley, each book you receive will be an international mailing.

One more item of note. I will send out a PM to request RL info: mailing address, phone number, e-mail. Once I've collected all of that info (Robin, I have yours), I will PM that info to each of you.

If you need a starter on how to make your deco, go to Go Make Something - World's Most Basic Deco (http://gomakesomething.com/ht/decos/basic-deco/) to get started, or try their House Deco (http://gomakesomething.com/ht/decos/house-deco/) using the same techniques. You can make these in any shape you want, so let your imagination soar!

Loving your theme Robin! That link to the tutorial was very helpful to me. My theme is going to be Trees.

Cat's Cradle
10-05-2011, 09:51 PM
Thank Meredith for the links. I had lost them a while ago, and she posted to the World's Easiest page.

I'll start a list of themes.

Mine is going to be "monochromatic purple." You can use any combination of colors in the purple family you wish in your spread. The subject is your choice.

ScrapPea
10-05-2011, 11:38 PM
I've had a stressful night, so I, too, need to think of a theme. I'll send tomorrow.

One question: do the book covers have to be made from paper, too? I have some small mini albums I use for scrapbooks and they have chipboard covers. Is that too heavy/bulky? (I would make pages sized based on those covers, NOT just use the album pre-made.)

I feel like such a mewbie with this question...what is a signature? Is that the binding?
(I mis-typed the m for an n but left it because it looks cuter that way!)

Cat's Cradle
10-06-2011, 04:52 AM
If you look at some books, they have sewing down the middle of the sections. Each of those sections of pages is a signature. The ones that are sewn and bound usually hold up longer. (I say usually, because I have a book at home that I need to re-bind and it has sewn signatures!)

If you take a look at the tutorial thread for the basic deco (http://gomakesomething.com/ht/decos/basic-deco/), the author recommends card stock, but if you have a strong enough punch, chipboard should be fine for your covers. Just keep in mind that you may have to change the way you bind your covers to compensate for the added thickness.

Charlie Brown
10-06-2011, 06:29 AM
Like your theme too Melissa! That leaves it open to lots of fun!

redplantlady
10-06-2011, 07:11 AM
Wow I cannot get over this, it is going to be so great - and the themes are looking very inspiring:yes:
Have had a good night's sleep and knotty problems usually solve themselves - somehow - in the night. I always tell my husband and daughter that in my essay writing days if I got all the material together and then slept, I could write the essay much more easily, though they both think that is rubbish:laugh:
So - I would like to have a colour theme subject too, please.
I have just done a journal page so I am loving the idea of the colours I used in that - red, black and neutral (cream, grey, white etc) - for my pages - which means the subject of the pages is open (well mostly! but please not cute (as someone said of clowns! so sorry but I really really really don't like cute):D)

Cat's Cradle

meredithu
10-06-2011, 10:20 AM
Okay here's mine:
angels and demons,
I do not like clowns either...lol.

I was thinking the war on good vs.evil...
Everyone can, take it for what you will. good evil, or angels demons. This means if the page depicts good vs. evil and there is not an angel in the scene I won't be mad.

meredithu
10-06-2011, 10:21 AM
Melissa- is this okay or am I crazy???

Artists crazy?? What stereo-type??

Cat's Cradle
10-06-2011, 12:18 PM
Meredith, I think it's your decision since it's your deco. ;)

I think the idea of good vs. evil/angels and demons is neat. It will interesting to see how each artist depicts it.

I got your info. I'll be compiling a list before long. Right now, my son is still in the hospital, so a lot of my time is spent either with him or shuffling the girls around to various relatives.

redplantlady
10-06-2011, 03:07 PM
So sorry about your son, how is he now?
Lol re clowns; actually I hate them too - but they do have a way of creeping in to my work - especially in my art dolls:laugh:
I am loving the angels/demons!!

meredithu
10-06-2011, 03:49 PM
I'm so Sorry Melissa, I had no idea.

I think this will be the most fun swap for everyone, especially since we get to dabble with the other themes too!

Cat's Cradle
10-06-2011, 04:48 PM
He's doing much better. Even ran around the peds ward today. He's not supposed to do that with his drainage tubes still in place....but he's supposed to get those out either tonight or in the morning. :jiggy:

Shirley knows because we are in another swap together. I had to bring my 9 y/o son in to the ER Saturday night, where they discovered the stomach virus we thought he had was a ruptured appendix requiring emergency surgery. We've been here since.

For me, that meant I had to drop almost all my swaps due in October, as I can only bring a limited amount of art supplies to the hospital (not enough space!). For him, that meant being doped up on morphine Sunday and half of Monday and learning how to walk again due to immense pain. His pain is much better, and he has off-ward privileges. We took him out to the duck pond this afternoon. (I personally think the fresh air bolstered his energy!!)

meredithu
10-06-2011, 05:23 PM
I am so glad he's doing better! What a nightmare. With the three kids I have, I can imagine how hard it would be to have one in the hospital. Fresh air is always a good way to get better! I hope he has a speedy recovery!

ScrapPea
10-06-2011, 11:21 PM
And finally...drum roll, please...my theme is games. Clowns are creepy, so none of that nonsense here, please. :)

@catscradle- I did read the deco post, and I understand the directions, but I want to make sure I understand: In the simplest of designs, cut a paper in half, fold, and that's the size of the book (small like a moley, right). So if I nest the pages inside each, that would mean that only the person doing the middle spread would have a completely connected 2-page spread to do, while everyone else has a divided space for artwork. (like redplantlady's very cool book with the "divided space" being her spiral binding, whereas a moley has all pages connected.)

I asked about the cardstock vs chipboard because I just mailed a heavy international package and was astounded at the cost! No worries here; now I know what to expect. A chipboard cover adds just a teensy more weight, but can protect better. Beware: this woman Runs With Crop-o-dile!

Sorry to be all mewbie about this. I have been overthinking swaps and things lately, so if this is one of those times, I accept that and hope you do, too. :)

All the best to you and your little guy.

Cat's Cradle
10-06-2011, 11:44 PM
It sounds like you've got the basic idea for the deco. And yes, only the middle spread is connected the way the basic one is made.

If the chipboard doesn't add too much more weight, I think it should be okay. Each of the books will be adding some weight as they go from person to person.

Cat's Cradle
10-06-2011, 11:50 PM
Now that we all have out themes, we need to settle on mailing dates.

We can mail on the 1st or 15th of each month, starting in November. Since this is an international group, I'd like to keep the mailing the same time frame each month.

One other thing: Do we want to name our group? Carole said she'd change the thread title if we want to name the group.

meredithu
10-07-2011, 12:24 AM
No worries little ScrapPea- you asked about all the questions I had rolling in my mind too. Cheers!

Additionally, we decorate the front/back covers and list our theme on the first page...?
The second 2- spread will begin when we send it off.

Naming the group would be fun..."Bringing Deco's Back" haha. I have no idea...

Good to hear everyone is well in both Scrap's and Cat's house! Scrap, don't worry about all of the questions I need that info too myself! I still don't understand the 7 sheets folded part, won't that give us more spreads than we really need for one rotation? I need to figure this out:shocked: Is the 7 sheets including the cover? Sorry to be goofy about this, I just want my book to be set up correctly so it doesn't cause any problems.

redplantlady
10-07-2011, 06:27 AM
Yes I am stuck on that also - I never have been good at working out the technical stuff!:)

meredithu
10-07-2011, 08:01 AM
Okay every one!

1. Cut 7, 8"x12" sheets. (of heavy paper, 100# watercolor, etc.)
2. Use a bone folder or anything to crease your sheets in half. Make sure the crease is on the 6" mark.
3. Lay the sheets inside one another and that will be your book----->coverless! When they are alone they are 4"x6" and you have 14 each. Fully open spreads will be 8x12" -7 each plus the "middle crease" is there or binding.

4. Now you need tag board or some heavy weight covers (2 ea), perhaps slightly bigger than your pages, or a fun shape but make sure it's not too crazy that it doesn't serve it's purpose.

Binding- this can be as technical or as simple as you want. Check the link I posted a few posts back...that link has good images (for us image needing people :D AND a very simple binding technique)
Otherwise if you are handy with a drill...some people drill holes into their book and bind from there. OR use an awl, long poker that can poke your holes. Just make sure all holes are in the same exact spot on each folded section!

meredithu
10-07-2011, 08:05 AM
Youtube- has a wealth of "simple book binding" videos. You can get as crazy technical or a simple as you want- it's your book. I watched a few videos on you tube and felt 10 gagillion times better!

Additionally, you want your binding to hold up under artists creating inside your book, so make sure you use some sort of cording that will work and continue to work over time.

Alright, in my other life I was a teacher...I guess I really miss it!

BTW Melissa when my youngest was about 7 he went into hospital with a suspected inflamed appendix and he did have a virus, but one that had affected all the glands in his abdominal area, hence the pain.I can remember waiting for the op, which never came!
When can he come home?

redplantlady
10-08-2011, 06:36 AM
Do you know, I still don't get it... :embarrassed:
I have made a miniature trial book - I cut out 7 little pages and folded them in half and added a cover and I get this...:goofy:
front cover, inside front cover, single page opposite the inside front cover, then spreads 1 to 13 (with spread 7 as the middle page with the stitching) then a single page opposite the inside back cover, inside back cover, back cover
Whereas if I cut 3 pages plus cover and fold them in half I get
front cover, inside front cover, single page opposite the inside front cover, then spreads 1 to 7 (with spread 3 as the middle page with the stitching) then a single page opposite the inside back cover, inside back cover, back cover
Soooo is it going round twice? or coming back with a lot of empty pages? or are we doing some pages before it goes off and leaving 7 empty spreads? or should it be 3 inside pages plus a cover.
Sorry!!! but please help!!!

I was thinking that we would decorate the front/back covers in our chosen theme/color scheme and then the first two-page spread--inside front cover and first page--is for the originating artist.

I still don't understand the 7 sheets folded part, won't that give us more spreads than we really need for one rotation? I need to figure this out:shocked: Is the 7 sheets including the cover? Sorry to be goofy about this, I just want my book to be set up correctly so it doesn't cause any problems.
The cover is outside of the 7 sheets. You know, I was thinking 7 sheets folded would give 7 spreads, but now that I'm thinking about all this, it will give more than that. IF you want to make your deco large enough for more than one rotation, go for it. If you prefer just the one rotation, I'm gonna have to play with the sheet count.

BTW Melissa when my youngest was about 7 he went into hospital with a suspected inflamed appendix and he did have a virus, but one that had affected all the glands in his abdominal area, hence the pain.I can remember waiting for the op, which never came!
When can he come home?
There was a 10 y/o boy that we shared a room with on the first night. He had fluid around his appendix and was sent home a couple of days later. I guess he had a virus....so glad my son didn't catch that!

He came home Friday!! :jiggy:

It really is up to you; if you make the deco with more pages, you'll have lots of blank pages coming back to you, ready for another rotation group. Otherwise, you can make it small and have it just for this group.

You are doing one 2-page spread on the inside front cover (you can put art paper on the inside of the cover to have consistent paper texture, quality, etc.) and the facing page. This can include your mailing rotation, your address (which should be included somewhere on your book), a start for your theme, etc. It's your spread, but usually this will help establish your theme better.

Thanks for this explanation, Meredith!

I can have mineready to mail out on the first of November

Yes I can also do Nov 1st...
If everyone is okay with the 1st of the month, we can start on November 1st.

I'm playing catch-up on a lot of stuff right now, including housework, from our week-long hospital stay. :goofy:

Good to hear your son is back home! Little boys are usually pretty resilient when it comes to getting better so that they can run around! Mine always was like that when he was younger. One day we had to take him to the hospital for tests after a seizure and later that night he was running around as if nothing ever happened. I couldn't believe all of the energy he had.

Robin

Glad your little boy is better Catscradle and you get some rest too!

Okay! I took some pictures of my deco but remember they don't have to be like mine, i just thought it would help to give examples.

Mine is 4" x 6" - I used watercolor paper, I made the cover alittle bit larger than the pages, I cut 7 pages at 8" x 6" and folded that made the 14 pages, the cover being seperate. I decorated the back with scrapbook paper and decorated the front cover for " Butterflies ". The inside cover I decorated alittle and added my mailing information on the first page. So each player that works in my book will work on 2 pages right next to each other. Hope this helps everyone! ( for myself I also made a envie for the deco that goes into another envelope to mail ).

To attach the deco I just put 2 holes in the middle of the folded paper and used yarn to tie it up all together!

November 1st sounds good to me, I made my book with 4 folded pages which will just make it around once. I may add one more before I get it all together.
I'll try and post some pics too, later on.

I just received a journal that would make it around once in a deco group of this size. It is made from 4 pages total.

If you use a heavy enough art paper, you can make the cover from the same paper as the rest of the book. 4 pages will make your cover plus 7 2-page spreads.

*whew* I, too, am glad that I missed a few days of this thread. I got caught up all at once and it makes sense. Mostly. :) Once I start making the book, I'm sure it'll all completely make sense!

Back in my single bachelorette days, I took a bookbinding class. We made 6 small books all with different techniques. The instructor never made handouts--:(--but I still have the books, and I could guess the rest from videos online. (Go YouTube!) I still have some of the paper, which I am thinking of using, except I don't know the weight.

I have some 96lb Bristol paper, two sided with smooth and textured sides. Is that acceptible? I know enough people who have sheets of watercolor paper they could give me, so it's no problem if that's not what's best here.

Also, I tend to collage. I haven't experimented on too many surfaces, so is watercolor paper a good/forgiving medium for that technique?

Robin, your book is fab! Thanks for showing us. That helped make it "click" for me.

96lb is a little light and might buckle a bit if anyone collages on it. Just a thought.

I use WC paper all the time for collage base and haven't had any problems with it.

Okay, another technical question-

when we get others books to work on: this is open media? We can draw, paint, glue and etc. (within the theme)

Does putting wax paper or something between pages work to protect my working area from other complete pages in someone's book?

I only ask because this is a first for me and I want to make sure I am in the know as far as all the tricks and etc.

Thanks!

Cat's Cradle
10-12-2011, 05:28 PM
Unless otherwise requested, the books are generally open media. Just try to be considerate of the artists before and after you, that you don't buckle the paper.

Waxed paper while working is a great idea. Just be careful when creating your pages, that you don't get paint on the previous work. (I've had that happen in my own moley books...)

Please leave a folded piece of wax paper between your pages to protect during shipping.

Can you let me know the exact info you want please Melissa? I am guessing name user name address email and book topic??
So glad to hear about the wax paper idea, as I am anxious not to mess anything up for anyone:)

My book is now complete so I will take some pics later...

Therefore is it OK please if I use the second double page spread and use the left hand side for info and ask if you would each mind signing the right hand side when you do me a spread:wubclub:

Okay-- final (!?) clarifications about book construction:

1--I cut 2 full-size sheets of watercolor paper lengthwise into 4 strips. .
2--I used 3 of those sheets folded in half.
3--The book, when put together= a page one (or second half of the inside cover spread)
4--The inside pages make a total of 5 spreads that are 4x12 which we will each decorate (with Spread #3 being the middle of the book).
5--The last page makes Page 12 (connected to back cover).

If I use that last strip for the cover, I'm done. If I use that last strip for inside pages, there will be 2 extra spreads (with Spread 4 now the middle one) that I can decorate, create. Or play with (get it; my games theme!) Then I just need to do a cover.

If that's the basic construction, I'll play (!) around with any sizes or shapes to see if I like them, or I could maybe decide a vertical orientation. That looks like what others have done anyway.

So...have I overthought this enough for everyone?? :)

Thus, we're mailing to the same person each month; I'm mailing to Shirley, since I don't feel right plopping someone else's name there each time.

I'll compose the address PM and send that out. Mail when you're ready, and please post to the thread when you've mailed.

while simultaneously I send my own book to meredithu
then I decorate your book and then also send that on to meredithu?
and I then get the next book to decorate which is Robin's sent to me by you after you have decorated Robin's??
So books are coming from you to me; then each time after I have decorated them I am sending them on to Meredithu; this continues until each book has passed through us all the way round to the end:unsure:
Is that right ?

I really was having a hard time mixing everyone up, and this way is a little less confusing.

Each month:

ScrapPea will send to Robin.
Charlie Brown will send to ScrapPea.
Meredith will send to Charlie Brown.
Shirley, you'll send to Meredith.

Just to clear up a concern that has been addressed to me via PM, these books are around 4x6, but not necessarily exactly that size. That is fine; deco books aren't always the same size or shape, so don't worry about a few differences between books sizes. It's all good.

"Royal Mail Airsure Packets
This is our accelerated Airmail service available to certain destinations only. You can send goods, gifts and commercial samples up to 2kg at the Airmail Small Packet postage rate plus the Airsure fee. We put your mail on the first available flight to its country of destination and your Airsure item will be tracked electronically to the point of delivery. Use Trace & Trace on www.royalmail.com to find out when your item has been delivered. Although your items receive priority treatment, the Airsure service does not guarantee delivery times.

Compensation
We may pay compensation for loss or damage of items on production of a copy of the certificate of posting up to £46. If you require extra compensation of up to £250 or up to £500 (depending on the country) there is an extra charge per item.

Trackable
Airsure items are electronically tracked to their destination, but are not signed for on delivery."

I don't remember if I mentioned it for this group, but we're NOT mailing in December. If you get your November spread finished early, you can go ahead and mail as long as it's before December. I don't want our art getting lost in the holiday mail rush.

So, we're skipping December and mailing again after the new year. Clear as mud? 'Cause I don't want to confuse y'all.

Soooo...not taking into account any super-de-duper speed artists, we have technically November and December to finish our first 2-pg spread. Officially, we mail again January 1-ish and begin our second spread at that time. ??

Shirley, I forgot to mention that I mailed out last night (Thursday). I tried to get Delivery Confirmation, but was told that service isn't available when mailing to the UK. I mailed mine via First Class, but I'll mail the rest of them Priority International so they make it faster.

The only other option I had was Registered Mail, and that's nearly $20....

CB, I got your deco book. It is wonderful! The inside envelope is so clever. My husband looked at it, too. Okay, I shove these cards and things I get mailed to me in his face, and he sometimes likes them. This book was one of them. He liked the "Hi" inside and he noticed the birds. And, yes, he did the same thing I did: turned the book sideways to read the "Jolliet Illinois" torn map. He even read the poem quote out loud.

Love the blue paper cover. What kind of paper is that? It's got a good feel.

One question: do you want any artist info somewhere in the book?

Wait a minute...
Let me explain. ;)

First post is the question. We're not mailing in December so we can enjoy holiday time with our families and miss the holiday mail rush. Too much chance of art going missing this way.

Second post explanation: If you get finished with your first 2-page spread before December 1, you are free to mail it to the next person. This is totally up to you if you mail before January 2, but it needs to be before the end of November if you choose to do so.

1st mailing: Nov 1
2nd mailing: Jan 2
3rd mailing: Feb 1
4th mailing: Mar 1
5th mailing: Apr 1
6th mailing: May 1
home: June 1

Does that help?

Thanks for the clarification I will send Jan 2 as I am international and that adds to postal chaos!!:)
Re post Melissa, that's fine, mine cost approx $13.62 to mail but I did put myself up for an international swap so was prepared - but don't forget I am more than happy to make a contribution to yr overseas costs Melissa as you have them all to send and it seems so unfair to you - and I am really really excited to be a part of such a cool project!! :):jiggy:

Thanks so much ScrapPea! I just really wanted to have fun with it and make it simple and light - inviting and welcoming for the person who is going to work in it. That blue paper I've had for a long while, I think my mom gave it to me several years ago and I finally on a whim just decided to use it for the background. I needed something that wouldn't compete with my tree. It will be a treat to see the completed book. Please do put your info somewhere on your spread - I didn't even think of that part of it. I definitely want that included- that's part of the fun of it. I will leave that up to you to to that however you think is best.:D

The face is a stamped image that I used colored pencils on. The hair is Zentangle patterns. I used Beadlines and ended them with Bleeding Heart. I used a darker pen to give the dimensional look.

I have used watercolour washes for the background, and added collage elements.
First I used some foreign text pages which I have painted in purple shades.
I made prints from a dry point plate of a profile I drew, using the text pages.
Next I diecut out birds and foliage from the text pages and from other purple paper, then glued and sealed it all.
If this is OK for you Melissa I will send the book on to meredithu before Xmas stuff piles in!!

Melissa, what is the bumpy texture on your book and how did you do it?
I have been meaning to ask for awhile and now that the house is quiet for once I can think straight!
I prob. should nap and not be on here....but this is an addicting hobby!

Cat's Cradle
12-10-2011, 04:12 PM
That texture is done by heating gel medium over acrylic paint. I used a dark Colorado, crackle medium, light color, then gel medium. While the gel was still tacky, I heated it with a heat gun until I had the desired bubble formation.

It can also be done with just gel medium, but the texture is different--you get smaller bubbles.

Okay, gals my big fear happened! Doing some cool stuff in Meredith's book and I did my best to protect the adjoining pages while I was creating and still managed to get some black paint at the top of the next person's page - which would be Scrap's entry. What do I do? leave it, cover it? Scrap, I'm sorry I yucked up your page. I'm sure it's nothing a coat of gesso can't fix, but still...:embarrassed::cry: I opened the book to my spread and put paper towels behind each page. So any advice on better protecting the other pages so it won't happen again?

Cat's Cradle
12-22-2011, 10:53 PM
I usually use a piece of waxed paper between pages, taped at the edges with painter's tape. Then, I hold the page while painting the edges. I've found this keeps my mess from getting on the next artist's spread.

As to the mess, I would wait for Scrap Pea to answer that. It may be that she can work it into her spread. If not, then a coat of gesso would probably do the trick nicely.

Charlie Brown
12-23-2011, 09:41 AM
Ahh, painter's tape, yes! Thanks Cat! Okay, Scrap, know you've been busy, but let me know...I am glad to prime/gesso your page for you if you want or if you have other plans I'm also happy to leave it as is. I'll be sure to use the wax paper and painter tape :)

I am very happy with how it's turned out so far, but was bummed when I seen the paint that got on the other page. Okay, everyone gets to learn from my mistake.:embarrassed:

12-23-2011, 02:36 PM

Sending positive thoughts....

Hope you all have a great Christmas!:D

Ours is odd as we are having no-one here - so we have cards and a poinsettia and a little Madonna and child I made at pottery as all our decor - we have been so lazy but also very relaxed!!

We are going to son and dil tomorrow (though I am cooking! with son) - then on Boxing Day we are going to London to our daughter, sil and 3 grandchildren - 7, 2 and it is Hettie's 5th birthday on 26th - so can't wait!

Bit sad as oldest son is in US with his American wife so we won't be seeing them:(

31st we are having a 2 night New Year Break in a hotel in Yorkshire with a 7 course meal (and dancing) then a murder mystery meal on 1st Jan - can't wait for that either!! (April 2012 is our Ruby Wedding - we got married in 1972!! so we are kicking off the year in style!)

Happy Christmas!!

Shirely, let me know if you want to see a pic now or if you would rather it be a surprise when you get your book? I have really been liking the idea of incorporating text into my work. I'm not fond of my own hand lettering, but I'm trying to embrace it more.

Cat, how are those new watercolors treating you? I know you were anxious to give them a whirl. Hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday!!

Haven't even opened them yet. It's just been too busy and the table isn't in the correct spot...:skeptical: Hopefully, I can use them tomorrow.

Meredith - Sure, I'm caught up, so whenever you want to send it.

I will probably wait just a couple of weeks before I send Redplantlady's to ScrapPea.

*whew* That's over. I took the deco book with me on vacation back home thinking, "Oh, I'm at my in-laws; I'll have so much free time." Note: back home, as in, where I spent my formative years and met husband (not my birth home, also beloved). Well, we went everywhere, leaving early and returning late. Why the post office does not stay open for me when I return to Philly from NYC at 1am is beyond comprehension.

So here I am, at my currently-living-in home, having just mailed CB's deco off to Robin. I did this before I had coffee, people, so understand how much better I feel having done that and am now sipping java. I'll download pics in just a bit. We've had our mail on hold for 10 days, to be delivered this afternoon, so who knows what treasures I'll find in there.

Here is a pic of MY journal, finally. I made the cover out of grungepaper, which is more flexible than grunge board. I stamped on the outside to maintain the texture. I was unsure how I wanted to close the book--strap, ribbon--or if I wanted to do that at all, so I left a flap to give me the option when the book returns.

The inside spread is a collage of delicious images I've used parts in on other ATCs, but here I got to use them for myself. (greedy, greedy, and it feels so good!) Not that the inside pages need to be anything like my spread; I just like doing collage work. In fact, I can't wait to see how everyone interprets "games."

And this is my contribution to Charlie Brown's Trees deco book. The 2 page spread is a combination of watercolor pencil wash, collage and stamping. I worked very, very hard to flatten the pages, but as I recall, there was still a bit of warping when I packaged it up. I think there is a tiny bleed of blue on the top of the page 2, but it's minimal. Robin, if you can figure a way to flatten pages if needed, go for it! My art is done, so however it incorporates into others' work is just fine by me. For me, have no concern about "ruining" my pages.

It was quite intimidating being the first person to work on a book. How do you start? Will your art affect others' work? I wonder, too, as #2...how will my work compare to the previous persons' art? I know, I know, there is no competition here, but still. I am excited to see what makes it around.

CB, I know it's too late to respond to your question, but I have no problem with whatever you send. I appreciate you gesso'ing the page, but don't worry about anything in the future. Do whatever makes you comfy sending it on, but I will incorporate it into my work. That's part of the challenge that excites me about this project!

Totally with you on the intimidation factor...I was baffled with Shirley's book....looking at Melissa's book and baffled....

Well, I am trying not to worry too much about what I do with the other books...
I am planning to do my best and to hope that the book owner likes (- or at least doesn't totally dislike!) what I have done. I think if I start worrying I will just make myself miserable:sad:
And for mine I am thinking that the exciting part is that it will be different and unexpected to get the book back and see all the different ways things have been done...:jiggy: as that is what I love about all the swaps, seeing other people's interpretation of the same subject...

So here I am, having a good day: an email project finally completed and it is loved!; my braces come off in <30 days; an excellent celebratory mocha frapp at SB; Livin' La Vida Loca on xm...and then I get home to a package. "Charlie Brown? What is she sending me? In this big package?" I had just talked to folks about trading cards just last night, so that was stuck in my mind. I raced inside and opened the package: meredithu's book. Oh, CB, your Angels and Demon art rocks!

And did I miss something about putting an pocket envelope on the inside front cover with my info on it? Two books so far have it and mine does not. ...i feel so unpopular....

ScapPea, I like my spread. I made a comment in the gallery because I seen it in there before here in the thread. I'm really loving adding text to my work right now, so seeing that you included it in yours was neat! I will definitely keep in mind not to get too overly worried about my artistic dribbles onto your pages - of course I will keep things under control best I can but know that it's okay if it does happen. I feel the same way for anything heading my way - I might find a way to incorporate it.

No worries about the pocket envelope thingy, I think that was just coincidental or subliminal. I put that in mine and then realized...hey Meredith did that too, and then I wondered did I do that because I seen it in hers? Anyway, weird I had those envelope things in my stash too.

Intimidated:err::confused:, yes me too, but lets just all have fun and not stress it too much. I'm playing around and experimenting in the books I've done so far and having lots of fun.

Meredith, let me know if you want to see your spread.

All righty, ladies. It seems I am now sitting on two beautiful deco books that I have not worked on. At all. My depression took a turn for the worse this winter and decided to take me with it. :(

Shirley, I can post these out to you together, and then once they have finished the rest of the rounds in the group, they can come back to me and I can work on them then. Or, I can get the spreads done and then mail them out...please let me know how you'd like to do it.

Either way, I'll post them both together.

I'll update the mailing list this week. Just haven't had the energy or motivation to do much art lately.

So very very sorry Melissa, I do really understand as I am on permanent meds for this, my doc says it is like a diabetic and insulin, I need them for ever. But I am pretty well controlled now (- well mostly lol:)
So send them both to me and give yourself a break and then have them back at the end when you will enjoy doing them:)

xx hugs xshirley
