It's a postage stamp-a-thon, brought to you by Evalila, Blanche, Ibus, and me!

Here's how it works: You create art using actual postage stamps, copies of postage stamps, rubber stamp images of postage stamps. You can even create your own postage stamps! Post your work and trade away! (Please conduct trades via PM, though feel free to chat in the thread.)

We start on Friday the 11th. If, wherever you live, it's Friday the 11th...start! You can also join in at any time. We will go all the way through Monday the 14th. If people need more time, we may go through Tuesday the 15th too. The main thing is to spend some time all creating, trading, chatting, and avoiding housework. :)

Post your art here and/or in the athon gallery. (It really works best if you can do both.) Here's a link to the FAQ on posting: http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/faq.php?faq=faq_gallery --If you get stuck, ask, and someone can help you. To put a card in the athon gallery, do as you would to post it in your gallery, but scroll down past atcs to trade, atcs for swaps, etc. to the athon gallery option.

Challenges: (feel free to try these any day, all through the weekend, or not at all)

postage stamp people--lots of postage stamps out there of different people's faces. Your challenge is to use the stamp as a launching pad to then collage/draw/paint/whatever the person's body. Works with animals, too. A couple of examples from me:

finish the scene Slap that stamp down and where it's lines end, pick up where the artist left out. A postage stamp of a flower could be the centerpiece for a hand-drawn garden. (Anyone have examples of these?)

inchies or twinchies Can you create them with postage stamps? Let's see!

artistamps Create your own postage stamps, using whatever media you like! Here's a wikipedia page to get you started, but there's tons of web sites (and probably youtube videos) on the subject: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artistamp

Even before it's Friday, feel free to work on backgrounds, soak stamps, and just hang out here. Ask questions, too! Share ideas! Immerse yourself in art!

(If I've forgotten anything, let me know.)

11-09-2011, 03:04 PM
YAY! Can´t wait

11-09-2011, 03:56 PM
hope to play sometime this weekend!

11-09-2011, 05:02 PM
Evalila....I think I may have some stamps from trades we did a few years ago! I just got back to doing ATC's after a year or more "off" attending to other things. I am so looking forward to this weekend.

11-09-2011, 06:16 PM
Yay, yay, yay! Glad to see other people looking forward to it. I got some art stuff in the mail today including some coasters to try for chunkies. I've not been getting enough art time this week and I'm eager to have some fun.

11-09-2011, 06:57 PM
Yay! I am a busy bee getting my stamps soaked and working on some backgrounds!
Can't wait!

11-09-2011, 07:54 PM
Yipee - I'm going to play. It won't be until Friday night (my time) but I hope to have some time each day of the weekend as well.

I've soaked off quite a few stamps from their backing and I am going to try and use mostly New Zealand stamps on my cards. I have a lovely set of butterfly stamps I am going to incorporate into a card or two as well as other Kiwiana themed stamps.

When I post swaps I always try and put interesting stamps on my envies as well.

11-09-2011, 08:00 PM
I'm in!!

11-10-2011, 12:24 AM
Yay, yay, yay! Wish it were almost Friday here. Maybe I'll do some backgrounds tomorrow. :)

11-10-2011, 12:39 AM
Mom sent me some more stamps and I got them trimmed tonight. :)

11-10-2011, 01:03 AM
Gonna be out of town tomorrow and Friday, but hope to hop into the fray of fun, Saturday, Sunday and/or Monday!! Looking forward to my First "A-Thon" with postage stamps!!!!

11-10-2011, 12:59 PM
I have a bunch of stamps ... have some backgrounds ... and have to work all weekend ... hopefully inbetween times I can do some art ... been fighting that dreaded "your muse is locked in a cage and you must find the key to unlock her" monster!

11-10-2011, 03:03 PM
I am ready! Got my stamps, got some backgrounds.... but it's not Friday yet

11-10-2011, 03:45 PM

Ooh, welcome to your first a-thon!

Kitty, I hear you. Time moves too slow before an a-thon, and too fast during it. :)

11-10-2011, 05:34 PM
These challenges are fun, too! Most of tomorrow will be spend at university but I look forward to play once I get back home (that is, if I got some energy left hah, if not I'll zonk out on the couch with the laptop and get inspiration from all you people beautiful art and will play on saturday!) :D

11-10-2011, 05:36 PM
I am ready! Got my stamps, got some backgrounds.... but it's not Friday yet

Friday DOES come a little quicker for us then it does for those in the States though... only 1h25m to go!! Did Australia already start the postage-a-thon? :D

Hmm I COULD stay up a little late and get some art in BEFORE bed.. who needs to be rested before class anyway? :goofy:

11-10-2011, 06:55 PM
I ordered some special stamps for my envies (our local PO never had them when I asked) and they arrived at the last minute. :) :)

11-10-2011, 07:05 PM

11-10-2011, 07:10 PM
Lovely cards D-dazzled71! Looks like the postage-a-thon is off to a good start! It's officially started here as well (tis 10 past midnight) but unfortunately I really need to go get me some sleep first!

11-10-2011, 07:30 PM
They're lovely! You're definitely doing the right thing D-Dazzled
I've got half-an-hour to go, but like Crafty am going to get some sleep first. I've been fighting a migraine type headache and it's still lurking.

11-10-2011, 07:35 PM
I am going to do as my teething just received his 6month shots child will let me

11-10-2011, 07:37 PM
D. Those are some spectacular cards.

Oh midnight where art thee or thou...hmm...

You get the point lol

11-10-2011, 08:13 PM
D-dazzled, those are great! Ibus, hope the migraine goes away. I'm not sure if I'll get an evening session in or if I'll start tomorrow morning. My desk is totally covered in stamps, though....I mean, more than usually. :)

11-10-2011, 08:29 PM
Dazzled, those are fantastic cards, what a great start! Woo whoooo!

I would stay up til midnight, but I have one of those dreaded meetings with the big wigs tomorrow morning ( filling in for my boss while he is on vacation), so I can't tonight. But there's a real possibility I can just work a half day tomorrow, so we'll see how it goes.

I have sorted stamps and written ideas on 3x5 index cards and put the stamps, the 3x5s, and paper srcaps in baggies.... hope that's not cheating! :skeptical:
When I get off work, I'm gonna hit the ground running!!!

11-10-2011, 08:46 PM
Nope, that counts as prep. :) Today I was trying to organize things, but I think I only made it worse. Oh, dear. Maybe it'll all sort itself out by morning?

11-10-2011, 10:06 PM
Let's see - chatting, creating, trading and avoiding housework! Sounds like a wonderful event to me! Hmmm.....I should check my postage stamps and see what might make some pretty artwork!

11-10-2011, 11:24 PM
Alas, I can't stay up for a 12:01 a.m. start, but I'm already for tomorrow, and looking forward to seeing everyone's work!

11-11-2011, 12:37 AM
How could I do this?!?!?!? I have already wasted almost the whole first day :arghh::cry: and my son has requested that my husband and myself go out for the night as he celebrates handing in his thesis today.
I will return!!

11-11-2011, 01:52 AM
I'll see what I can do!

Just Ducky
11-11-2011, 02:09 AM

I have forgotten how much time it takes to put the backs on the cards, scan, upload etc.
Question....can we keep creating until Monday and then scan and upload later?
Just trying to keep up but I have to go to work!
Check out the "a-thon" gallery for my two that are complete. Having trouble putting the images here and don't have time to figure it out:skeptical:

11-11-2011, 10:33 AM
Why not add the backs to the card later? If you wait till Monday before you show cards the chance on trades is smaller than when you post from day one.

11-11-2011, 10:37 AM
Whoo nap times almoat here. About to start creating!!

11-11-2011, 10:40 AM
Good idea Wil Opio........ I will try that. Right now I have to go to work. Much of the USA workforce is off for Veterans day but I still have to go to work!
Catch you all later.

11-11-2011, 10:54 AM

One more....Had these stamps leftover from the Native Americans swap. For that swap I read about Chief Red Cloud and was fascinated. Summarized Wiki -- While his early life was spent as a feared warrior, Red Cloud became an important leader of the Lakota as they transitioned from the freedom of the plains to the confinement of the reservation system. His trip to Washington, DC had convinced him of the number and power of European Americans, and he believed the Oglala had to seek peace. Can't help but wonder if he ever second-guessed himself many times. I entitled it Hopeful Journey because I believe he WAS hopeful that moving his people to their new land (while he was not in favor of it at all) would save many lives of those he felt responsible for.

Hand-painted background, collaged images, postage stamps.

11-11-2011, 12:48 PM
Some incredible cards here. I'd best get to gettin'!!

Definitely do the backs after the athon. We're actually going through Monday and maybe through Tuesday if people want to. Then you can take a couple of days to get things organized and mailed off.

The art is amazing! I better get busy creating, huh? :)

11-11-2011, 01:00 PM
Two more from me and then I take a break for dinner. Might be back later and otherwise tomorrow...

Minnkel, just to let you know that those northern lights in that stamp are not even near by Helsinki :). If you look at the coordinates, you will find the place where the picture is taken . The place is called Valkiaisjärvi.

Oh that is one thing I LOVE about AFA. Always get to learn stuff!!! Thanks Sniisk! I changed the name to: Northern Lights in Valkiaisjärvi (by way of Helsinki) - cancellation is from Helsinki
:D One rule of life -- adapt and adjust

11-11-2011, 01:14 PM
If you go Google Maps and write a word "Oulu" (it is the biggest city in Northern Finland), you will be very close by the small lake that is called Valkiaisjärvi :). Or of course you can type Valkiaisjärvi and see the lake immediately.

And yes, the cancellation is always from Helsinki at least if the stamp is from me. Our mail goes to the main post office of Finland and the stamps are stamped there.

Two more and then gotta break for lunch. Think I'll take the afternoon while playing with my granddaughter to do some matching of stamps, elements and backgrounds (that is if I can get her to watch a movie or a few Sesame Streets or something)

One more winter one and then on to other things. Serendipity - my print cartridges are about dead but wanted to print off this picture of fish from Norway. Gave it a try and it turned out so cool even though not like the original photo!!! The fish look so very cold and icy....appropriate I think. And Marilyn is not all polka-dotty like in the scan...wonder what happened there?

Totally dazzled by everyone's artwork! Yeah, putting them in both the athon gallery and the thread is best because depending on if people are at a PC or on their phone or something, they'll be able to get better views one place or the other.

Ok, some from me:

11-11-2011, 04:09 PM
And these:

11-11-2011, 04:17 PM
Wow all, such beautiful cards posted!! I'm finally all set and ready to get some crafting done myself :D

11-11-2011, 04:37 PM
Awesome cards everyone. I get to play now, and need to get busy creating! :)

11-11-2011, 04:42 PM
Everyone has such great cards

11-11-2011, 04:45 PM
I was wondering.. is it possible to soak off those self-adhesive stamps as well or do they require a different approach to seperate them?!

11-11-2011, 04:47 PM

Maybe this will work

11-11-2011, 05:10 PM
OK, my last one for tonight.

11-11-2011, 05:20 PM
Good Morning All..........I am loving everyone's work and am so pleased I joined in this Athon.

11-11-2011, 05:23 PM
I was wondering.. is it possible to soak off those self-adhesive stamps as well or do they require a different approach to seperate them?!

I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to have to cut the background paper very close and just use as is. :(

I've got backgrounds, stamps etc waiting ready. This headache seems to finally be going, so hopefully tomorrow I can get creative!

11-11-2011, 05:24 PM
I was wondering.. is it possible to soak off those self-adhesive stamps as well or do they require a different approach to seperate them?!

I've wet the back and the paper peeled off, but I haven't actually soaked them.

11-11-2011, 05:24 PM
Loving all the cards, fabulous work everyone.

11-11-2011, 05:24 PM
Sorry to hear about your migraine headache Ibus, such bad timing just at the start of the PSAT!! Hopefully it'll be gone completely by morning and you can make up on "missed time" :D

And yeah, I've tried to soak it off and the edges DO come loose but the rest.. not so much heh. Maybe I'll cut the paper from under the soaked of edges .. or maybe tomorrow I'll google to see whether I can find a way to get them off!

11-11-2011, 05:28 PM
I've wet the back and the paper peeled off, but I haven't actually soaked them.

Ohh, like rub off the paper after wetting (possibly soaking it a lil if tis on thick paper) like you do on image transfers? Now why didn't I think of that?!

11-11-2011, 05:31 PM
Here are my last 2 of today:

11-11-2011, 05:33 PM

Maybe this will work

Geeky, they look great! To make it show up in the post...go to your gallery and right-click on the card you want and then click "copy image url" and then open another window, come here and when you start a post, click on the icon that looks like a yellow postcard. Paste the url in there and that should insert it. (It sounds harder than it is.) You can also post them as attachments.

As for soaking self-adhesive stamps, I've pretty much given up on that. I trim them close and/or try to make the background paper work with the design.

11-11-2011, 05:36 PM
Ya I tried but I actually do everything off my phone. And it didnt work very well but im not gonna let that stop me

11-11-2011, 05:46 PM
I read in another thread somewhere that phones store pictures in way larger file sizes than what we can post here at AFA, so posting from a phone simply doesn't work. Sorry!

Here's 3 more from me...

Magnifcent Frog- Traded
Indian Elephant - Traded
Saint Agnes- Traded

11-11-2011, 06:40 PM
OKay.....so that didn't work. How do I make the images smaller here on the forum? And or how do I delete my last post!

11-11-2011, 06:42 PM
So I figured how to delete the last message which had my cards ENORMOUS....how do I paste an image here that is smaller?

11-11-2011, 06:42 PM
Meanwhile I did just add 4 cards to the A-Thon Gallery!

11-11-2011, 06:49 PM
One way is to go to advance reply and click the paper clip or the yellow postcard

11-11-2011, 06:51 PM
I got mine to work

Thanks cynthia for the advice!

11-11-2011, 07:10 PM

11-11-2011, 07:23 PM
So I figured how to delete the last message which had my cards ENORMOUS....how do I paste an image here that is smaller?

When you post the link, you'll see inside the link it says either small or large, so you can actually just change it inside the url--backspace or delete the large, type in small and then it should work.

11-11-2011, 07:24 PM
Wow, some really fun cards! I think it was Nancy that said this might be the best postage stamp a thon Ever! Yup. And I'm actually playing this week end...happy, happy.

DUCKY! I have chocolate (does dark work?) AND I have Bailey's. I'm happy to share with whomever requires it! :D

I'm not sure "require" is the word...but it sure sounds tasty.

I finally got into my art room, then got carried away with my postage stamps.
Suddenly I realized I was freezing cold and forgot I hadn't turned on the heat!

Now I'm inside warming up...but perhaps I'd better eat dinner before Bailey's and chocolate!

Here are my first four ~

I fainted (is that a correct word?) in the bathroom around midnight and my husband found me there. I don't know if I hit my head somewhere but I feel like my head would be heavier now. I hope to feel better soon.

11-12-2011, 06:50 AM
Good morning everyone - well, ok, it´s almost noon here in Germany;)

It took some time to get through my PMs and all the postings in this thread.

Hope you feel better soon, Sanna!

Now off to create some more cards...

11-12-2011, 06:52 AM
Two more....posted to A-thon gallery. Still working on getting the images to load here in a good size.

11-12-2011, 07:12 AM
Here´s a description on how to upload pics to the thread from your gallery:

I always open two windows in internet explorer, one with the thread and one with the gallery.

1) Go to the main page of your gallery & right click on the picture you wish to post - this brings up a menu has “properties” at the bottom.
2) Right click on “properties”, and it will show you Address (URL). Highlight the address/url and copy (Ctrl C).
Then follow steps 3 - 5
Note: Your picture will come up as large. Most folks use small or medium in the thread.

3) Go to your post in the thread and click on the "insert image" button (looks like a postcard)
4) Paste the address (right click, click paste or Ctrl P) into the window that pops up and hit OK - that puts the code into your post for your picture to show up; (you paste the address from the properties box over the http thingy that shows when you open the "insert image" box)
5) Remember that images from the gallery are small, medium or large. Most folks use small or medium in the thread. Find the word small, medium or large (or letters s m l) in the address and change it to size you want.

[IMG]http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/400/small/PSAT001.jpg [/IMG

I left the last bracket off so you can see how the address will look.

Hope this helps:)

11-12-2011, 08:12 AM
Thanks.... I was copying "shortcut" which didn't give me the size to adjust. I'll try this for the next two after I get them scanned.

11-12-2011, 08:16 AM
Once again I love all the cards that have been posted while I was offline :D

Ack Sanna, that doesn't sound good -- I hope you feel much better soon!

Tomorrow afternoon I'm off to a matinee show of opera with my MIL so I won't be able to do a lot of crafting.. does the PSAT run till Sunday evening or is Monday included as well? Just curious!

Wow, Good Morning All I am in Awe of all the wonderful creations uploaded over night (night here that is). You are one very talented and creative bunch. I am loving them all. I am about to go and have breakfast and then off to do some stuff. Will definitely be back later just to see more beautiful cards.

11-12-2011, 05:53 PM
Cynthia, I envy your snow! I used to live in the NC mountians and we had lots of it there compared zilch here by the coast in SC. Stay cozy and keep creating - your cards are great!

KESagers, I have been wondering what ya'll are doing while creating- Christmas music sounds like fun, but alas, my stereo is not working just now
I am watching a Harry Potter A-Thon on TV.

Any one else care to share what you have going on in the background while creating?!?!

11-12-2011, 05:56 PM
craftyvox, It officially goes through Monday, but with this bunch through Tuesday has good odds- if I were a gambler, I would lay $$ on it!

hi Blanche.. ya wanting to know what's going on in MY background ???
well I got this whinney cat driving me nuts... and the dog is staring me down... must be chow time for the herd... oh and I can hear my supper burning as we speak.. not a good sound.. my hubs has the car race on TV and sounds like they are speeding down the hall.
but other then that things are kinda quiet around here.... Opps, gotta run, hubs is yelling that the burning supper is now smokin' too....

11-12-2011, 06:05 PM
Haha! I was thinking of that subject: what's going on in the background while I am working on my first a-thon!
Well, I am listening to 80's music on the radio with a Mom and a dog buggin once-in-awhile. I was in the kitchen trying to figure out where this noise was coming from, kind of like a mouse rustling, and figured out it was the rain! (We don't get much of that around here.)
Posting some cards soon...

11-12-2011, 06:08 PM
Yippee! A Jersey Duck for a Jersey girl!

11-12-2011, 07:05 PM
Hee heee!
I am so nosy! But I truly do think about stuff like that and to see everyone's fantastic art- just makes me wonder what else is going on when it's being created :D

minnkel, solitude & quiet is a good thing - I am deaf in one ear, so sometimes hearing nothing in my good ear gives me a balance that I can't explain - to quote an oldie but goodie - a peaceful, easy feeling :)

Ducky, I sure hope dinner is edible! glad to see your scanner is in working order!

nancyjb, My goodmess, ( yes, good mess - typing on a tablet ) I didn't realize SD didn't get much rain - enjoy it and keep on rockin with your bad self to that 80 s music- wish I could join you!!!

Jewels, what kind of show? hope it went well!

poeticpaper, Glad you found the thread! Can't wait to see your cards!

Blanche, you can have the snow. After a number of years near Phoenix, my cat and I think November is supposed to be a sunny and delightful month.

I generally listen to music in the studio. Sometimes I go for silence. It kind of depends on what I'm working on.

11-12-2011, 07:13 PM
Here's my first card, this is a test to see how it uploads

Minnkel, I would love to have your recipe. It got down to 68 last night....I know that's not ever cold to you gals, but, I have lived on the southern coast in 90 degree weather for about 40 years and and when if drops to 75 I freeze....so that soup may help me make it through the winter!
