Parrots are probably the most charasmatic of birds - they're flashy and noisy and oh-too smart.

For this swap you will be illustrating 3 cards featuring parrots. These can be realistic or whimsical; stylised or cartoonised, HOWEVER, they MUST be recongisable species and more-or-less authentic colours (various colour strains permitted). When I say "parrots" I mean birds in the psittacines family and it includes parakeets, lories, lovebirds, macaws, etc etc.

On the back of your card please write the species you have illustrated, where it lives and at least ONE fact about it - along with your name, username and the date.

Now for the nitty gritty:
- Please sign up by posting on this thread. This allows me to better keep a track of who is doing what and also allows others to leave REP points later.
- I WILL NOT send you my address until you ask for it - this way I can monitor who has posted and who has not and don't get any surprises!
- I live in New Zealand. It can take anything up to two weeks - or longer, for mail to get to me (average is 7-10 days). Therefore, if your cards are not in the post by February 10th, they may not make it on time! I will wait a week for any cards in the mail prior to the 22nd that have not yet arrived, but DO NOT post them on the 25th and expect them to make it in time. I reserve the right to return any overdue cards, untraded, to their creators.
- Please do your best work. Nothing rushed or messy and make sure all regular ATC guidelines are adhered to.
- Cards should be enclosed in a plastic sleeve. But if you can't get them, I do have spares.
- Please make sure your username and real name are on the back of your cards, also on your postal envelope AND address label.
- Please send a NEATLY PRINTED (hand or computer) address label. No envelopes required.
- Loose stamps, $1 US or money via Paypal is greatly appreciated (although I do have to Paypal fees on these). They are not necessary, but will help ease my burden of postage. The reason numbers are limited is because posting from NZ to anywhere else in the world is rather expensive ($2.40 per letter outside of Australia). Please no Western Union. I don't know what to do with them and neither does my bank.
- Hostess ATCs are greatly appreciated. Other bribes accepted too. Please no ephemera or craft scraps however, as I personally illustrate more than other crafts.
- Please ensure your cards are securely packaged and not just thrown into the envelope. Any 3-card holders or cardboard backings will be re-used in your returns.

Also, because my swaps have limited places - If you join up, do not withdraw and do not send in your cards, then you will receive a NEUTRAL feedback.

Looks like parrots are not as popular as owls... Or cats in boots... Anyone else want to join me in drawing these raucous and colourful characters?

And has anyone else here seen "Rio"? It's an awesome movie - and what inspired me to host this.

Not sure where all the other "parrot people" are at, but then again, it is a very busy time of year! I'm really surprised though, that this didn't fill up faster!

"RIO" was awesome! I usually don't watch the cartoonish-type movies but my daughter rented it so I felt like I should and I'm so glad I did! :jiggy:

How about "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" documentary? Has anyone else seen that?

lemurkat
12-13-2011, 12:34 AM
Welcome Jennie.

@ Timeinmyhands - Yes, I noticed they're not really getting crazy amounts of signups too, so I guess maybe it is the time of year - but then again, some folks are on holiday, aren't they?

Maybe that's why sign-ups are slow, I hesitated because I know I'd never be able to make parrots of that quality.

lemurkat
12-15-2011, 05:03 AM
Suntrade - Neither, they're colouring pencils. A mix of prismas and polychromos, with the occasional touch up with markers.

Lea67000 - Ah, but that should encourage people - cos everyone who plays in my swaps gets one of my cards! It may be just a print, but it's one of my cards ^^

I've been looking at parrots online since I signed up. I always thought they were just the green polly want a cracker birds. They really are beautiful I couldn't get over some of the colors and combinations. Are they like most birds where only the boys are fancy?

Now we're starting to fill up!! YAYY and welcome to the new players! :jiggy: I'll be in and out during the next couple of weeks trying to get all my Christmas stuFF done! It really seemed to sneak up on me this year for some reason!

Parrots are wonderful and I've always had one for a pet as far back as I can remember! Sadly, my favorite and bestest friend, a beautiful Panama Amazon named "Sammy", passed away in Feb. of 2008. I still tear up sometimes if I dwell on it too much...he was such a special little fellow!

After "Sammy" passed, the house was just too quiet so I found a parrot breeder and put a down payment on an egg! The breeder was kind enough to send pics at each stage of developement and I treasured each one! (Kind of felt like a new mom! LOL!)

The first pic is my little "Mikko" at 5-weeks old....The next pic after that, he already had feathers and looking much more "aware"! They have to grow up quickly in the wild in order to be able to escape from predators!

The second pic is a current one of him keeping me company while I do the dishes....

No! In many species both male and female share the same fanciful colours, but than there is the Eclectus parrot where the female is the fancy one. Of course, in other speices the girls aren't as pretty as the boys.

Ha! I have a permanent scar of a parrot that bit me at parrot jungle in Miami. Is a shame that after the hurricane the place was gobe ... where I grew up they were everywhere. My dad had one that she new my mothers name, and she talked just like my grandmother. She would start hollering her name from the the backyard, and my mom would start screaming: Mom I said I was coming! You know I cannot run! And the parrot kept calling her name. It was so hilarious!

LOL, Jennie!

I completely forgot to mention that Sammy, my parrot that passed away, was almost 38-yrs old! I actually had him longer than our daughter who is 24!
I just thought that was interesting...most people don't know that some parrots (in captivity) can live to be 100-yrs old!

Nice cards, lea67! And quick too!

TIMH I didn't kknow that. I figured they were like a gerbil and definitely not more than a dog. That's the kind of pet that you make sure that you get when you're young. I really thought they would have fluffy chickie fuzz for feathers. But he must have been naked. I have to admit he has a sweet face

Great cards Maria. The last one I thought he was doing chin ups. We went to a party and the lady had a huge whitish peach colored bird. When he got nervous he did chin ups like that. He must have done about 2000 chin ups that evening. I really thought that he should have been put in another room because he was upset

Jennie
01-01-2012, 07:10 PM
So are the books on the shelf still? The utilities must be going nuts with trying to keep power, water, and gas to all the houses. It's so sad such a beautiful place. I too wish the earth would give it a break.

lemurkat
01-02-2012, 02:09 AM
Books are back up. And haven't fallen down again yet. Don't expect them to stay up their permanently. *sighs* Now they're saying we could have a 7 out to sea, complete with tsunami... I'm not sure what we could do about that. It's not like there's much higher ground to get to, except for the Port Hills which are on the far side of town.

Jennie
01-02-2012, 12:11 PM
Are you right on the coast or are you back a ways. Why do they predict that?

RachelMarie
01-02-2012, 02:16 PM
I have sent my cards! :)

lemurkat
01-02-2012, 02:32 PM
Are you right on the coast or are you back a ways. Why do they predict that?

A new faultline has been discovered out to sea - it could generate up to magnitude 7 which could in turn cause a tsunami.

We're about 10km from the sea. So we *should* be okay, unless it's a particularly big one, but it's still a scary thought.

And Rachel - I'll watch for them!

Jennie
01-02-2012, 03:20 PM
Ok that's really interesting. Now the question- Is it better to know or is it better not knowing it's there. After the past year you really do need that trip in June.

TimeInMyHands
01-05-2012, 01:31 AM
*BUMP!!*

That is some scary stuff there, Lemurkat! We actually have been having small quakes here in Ohio of all places! Weird!
I felt the first really big one (the one that damaged the Washington Monument) and it was absolutely horrifying to have the ground and everything around you move with no control!! :err: I cannot imagine what your beautiful city and occupants are going through! Please stay safe!!

Evalila - your magnificant parrots have arrived.

Btw - might I just note - that if you are participating in two of my swaps, please DO combine them together to post them!

Are you okay if I send yours back together, Evalila? Parrots and forest?

Evalila
02-03-2012, 02:56 AM
That would be fine, thank you:D

Will do this next time. I always have a kind of paranoia when it comes to mailing my cards :) - if I send them separate there´s less risk that both get lost in the mail

LemurKat, If you want to wait until my zooology cards are done and send them all to me it's fine. So what is the next wonderful idea you have for a swap? I can't wait. You see you let me draw animals, especially hedgehogs, and other rodents. It's really very relaxing to do.

TimeInMyHands

My parrots flew out yesterday on their long journey!

I've been a bit wonky-headed since I had surgery last week so I hope I didn't forget anything in my mailing! Please let me know when they arrive!!

Thanks Timeinmyhands, I'll watch for them.

Jennie - next swap will be Spiders. Not everyone's cup of tea...

Jennie

OOOOO spiders are beautiful. Don't want them in my house, but they really are something to look at. Can't wait for it.

Having done a bit of calculation I have realised that I do not have time to host another swap before my US roadtrip, thus I shall not be hosting a spider swap until July at the earliest. Sorry!

So we're just waiting on Txcat - whose were posted a couple of days ago. Yay!

TxCat
02-25-2012, 12:39 AM
*kicks the post* They should be there any day now, depending on when you get your mail (Monday, they said). Meanwhile, here they are:

maroon bellied parrot
Pesquet's parrot (also known as the vulturine parrot)
sun conure
green cheeked parrot

lemurkat
02-25-2012, 12:55 AM
I was picking up my mail on fridays, but will likely pick it up earlier next week because my parents are home and I might be invited to dinner. Here's hoping!

TimeInMyHands
02-27-2012, 02:25 AM
Thank goodness my cards made it there safe and sound! :)(Especially after loosing my daughter's card for you to the evil "mail monsters" awhile ago! GRrRR!!)

I've been so sick and not logged on much but wanted to check out TxCat's cards and they are lovely! The little green fella' (the Pesquet's parrot?) is so sweet and my favorite of course!

Can't wait to see these returns! We're getting close!! YAYY!

lemurkat

Still not arrived from TxCat... I don't know what's up with my mail service atm.

Sorry about the wait, folks.

TxCat
03-04-2012, 08:53 PM
It might not be your post, it might be mine. *sigh* We paid for priority mailing on those too to make certain they would get there :P

Sorry for making everyone wait.

Doesn't help my confidence that today a local postal truck just...caught fire and burst into flames.

SunTrade

Is OK with me Lemurkat. TXCat cards are fab! I do not mind the wait! :D

Because I needed to get the Enchanted Forest returns sent out a couple of days ago, I have sent (belatedly, sorry) cards to Evalila, Jenny and RachelMarie for this swap already. So, you may hear from them soon. The rest of you, I'm afraid, will have to wait a little longer. I believe I have another week or so before my "grace" period is over.

*fingers crossed* They will arrive soon!

This is the second "priority" letter that has taken longer than regular post (the other still has not arrived around 3 weeks later). This does not bode well!

I swear, if I have another letter get lost on my watch, I'm going to stop hosting and trading altogether (once I've finished up my current swaps).

Please do let us know if they don't show up on time or if they don't show up. We kept the receipt (I keep saying 'we' because Pshaw handles all my mail; since my stroke I don't do so well with things that have numbers on them) and will certainly hammer the post office about either tracing them down or getting a refund. It cost us almost $20 US to send them priority; I do that with all my overseas cards simply because they're art and they're worth it to me.

So sorry that this happened, but it's not your fault. The last one I sent priority ended up getting there three weeks after it was guaranteed. ACK!

TxCat...hope they get there. Thanks for explaining the "we"...I was thinking, perhaps, you were a Rowdy Royal or something LOL.

Jennie
03-05-2012, 09:21 PM
Deb i was wondering the "we" too. My granny used to say, "you have a mouse in your pocket?" if I said we.

You should have words with your post office. It's ridiculous that you pay so much money to have it sent "priority" to have it arrive much later than you would have normally!

Tell you what, next time you send to me (if you ever do again) send it non-priority and we'll see how long it takes!

lemurkat
03-06-2012, 01:38 PM
There is a priority letter waiting for me. Alas, I shall not be able to pick it up until friday and my mother was not able to confirm the address of the sender. So *fingers crossed*

Okay, your parrots have flown in. I do think you should at least mention to your post office that it took 2 weeks to arrive. Posted on the 23rd February, arrived 7th March. No idea why it took so long - it arrived perfectly fine.

Anyhow, time to swap 'em and send 'em out! They'll be in the post on monday.

Rec'd beautiful Parrots today Thank you LemurKat for the wonderful Kaka parot card and for being a great host. Also thank you to Rachel Marie, Lea67000, And Evalila great cards everyone

Evalila, Jennie and RachelMarie should already have received their's or should do so shortly. The rest shall be posted today.

I shall just note that the NZ Naturally cards I am including with each one (kakariki, kaka, kakapo and kea) are PRINTS, not originals. I wrote it on the back of them, but not all of them. And that I am only sending out one actual original - being the tarot card that you can see in the gallery. Thanks to the generosity of my players, I was able to keep a card from almost everyone. So, thank you all for being such awesome players.
