View Full Version : HD/HP What can you do with color pencils or crayons? (Kids Welcome) SWAP due Feb. 27

12-14-2011, 12:12 AM
Swap Due Date –February 27, 2012
Number of Cards - 3 for 3
Number of participants – Unlimited
Medium: Medium: Hand Drawn/Hand Painted/Colored
For this theme create anything, as long as the medium is crayons, or colored pencils. I have been trying new mediums and thought about using these. You can outline or make your base drawings with ink, pen, or pencil. Below you will find a butterfly card I made with crayons and a landscape with colored pencils.

• Shipping: Please send a SASE envelope (business size please) with a minimum of .45 cents or a forever stamp . Personally I would add an extra .20 fin case they go over an ounce, but it is your choice. I will mail the cards the amount of postage you send. Internationals please send a stamp from your country for the same amount it cost you to ship your cards that I can use to send in another swap in your country, or I can accept a dollar via PayPal, or cash.
• Make sure your cards are the standard 3.5x2.5 size and properly secured in individual sleeves. I prefer you do not tape your cards, but if you must, please use very little.
• If you need to withdraw just let me know a week prior withdrawal date.
• Please remember to clearly write your username and the swap name on the back of all your cards, so you can get you rock points, and on the back of your mailing envelope. Please remember to do the back of the envelope, as I have entered many swaps, and I am constantly receiving returns.
• An extra card for the swap host (in line with the swap theme) is greatly appreciated but is not required.

I will give iTrader feedback when I receive your cards, and will also update this post showing that your cards have arrived. In return I encourage you to give iTrader host feedback for me when you receive your swap returns, and you rock points for the artists whose cards you receive.

Above all have fun!!

I'd love to join please. I'm not sure I can make a crayon look like that though

12-14-2011, 08:09 PM
Great Jennie welcome! :jiggy:

12-14-2011, 08:38 PM
Fun I can mail my swaps together!

12-14-2011, 08:47 PM
Fun I can mail my swaps together!

Certainly! That would save on shipping! :D:yes:

12-14-2011, 10:37 PM
Welcome jiliyan !

12-14-2011, 10:59 PM
I'd like to play, too, as I've wanted to try some crayon work. SunTrade, did you need to spray a fixative (like you might with pastels) or do the crayon cards do ok? (Something else I've wondered.)

12-14-2011, 11:19 PM
Welcome CynthiaSillitoe! glad you joined us! This is actually a new experiment for me, but I do not think crayons need fixative at all, as crayons do not smear.

I think there are so many cool stuff you can do with them. I color on my desk table which is raw wood and I think all the grain came through, did not plan on that .... but it might be cool to make different effects this way! Jy drawing teacher used to carry a box with her, and she had been drawing for years! She actually worked for hallmark, and made several of their drawings.
I have also seen what some can achieve with colored pencils, and is so amazing! I want to learn to use this mediums, and though the ATCs would be a great place to start.

12-15-2011, 12:03 AM
Cool. I've done a lot of colored pencil, so I may do crayons. I didn't think they'd need a fixative, but wanted to be sure. Now I've got to get me a box of crayons....ah, I love that smell!

12-15-2011, 02:55 PM
Nothing better as a kid than a crayola 64 pack and a pad of paper. The smell, the points on the new crayons, the colors lined up like on a bleachers. Then my sister would draw for 2 minutes and break 6 or 8 crayons. So since they were "used" my mother would dump them into this really cute cat cookie jar and ruin the whole thing.

12-15-2011, 03:03 PM
Hi Jennie, broken crayons, sounds familiar. My granddaughters brake them all, so
I bought cheap ones...and the ended up in a jar:yes: but they still do use them.

Suntrade, I would like to join! I have a question about the crayola's, did you use the
"regular" ones, or the watersoluble ones or the oil ones? So many kinds of stuff
to use, we are spoiled aren't we?

12-15-2011, 06:56 PM
mariloupatch yes! we are so spoiled ... I know I am! I used plain crayola crayons. But I am not picky, you can use whichever you feel comfortable with. Welcome to the swap!

I am looking forward to seeing everyone's creations!

Jennie, I agree with you. I love the smell of new crayolas. My mom never bought me some, I always used colored pencils...

12-15-2011, 06:58 PM
Aww! Marilou buy the babies the best for their art needs. Has anyone seen that crayon melter that makes different colors. i don't know a mom out there that hasn't made that a fun time in the kitchen. Now here they make a toy out of it and take the mom part right out of it. They also loved to do stained glass pictures for the windows at Christmas. My youngest was very precise in making her's. While my oldest liked the abstract look

12-15-2011, 09:57 PM
This is the perfect swap for me- I recently have been experimenting with crayons. I would love to play- please add me:D

12-15-2011, 10:04 PM
Welcome Snickleme!

12-16-2011, 03:30 AM
I think I prefer the watersaluble ones, will see what comes out of this old brain of mine :D And Jennie, my babies have more crayols'a in their jar then I have in my secret
hidden box:shocked:

12-16-2011, 07:24 AM
That's for me I love to work with colored pencils, is there a theme or is it anything goes as long as it's the appropriate medium?

12-16-2011, 01:20 PM
Yes Lea the Theme is up to you! Should I sign you up?

12-16-2011, 02:26 PM
Yes you can sign me up!

12-17-2011, 02:56 PM
welcome! I look forward to seeing the cards!

12-18-2011, 07:44 AM
I've drawn some winter birds (first snow this weekend inspired me):

12-18-2011, 04:08 PM
Those are great Lea! I can;t wait to see them in person!

I like the touch of the scarves. Very clever!

12-22-2011, 01:40 PM
I have to find my crayons. I had them out the last time I baby sat for a friend's sick little girl and now I have no idea where they are. OOOOO do you think this is a reason to go buy a brand new package of 64 marvelous, sharpe, lined up, smells great, crayons?

12-22-2011, 02:55 PM
YES definite!!!!:yes::yes::yes:
Enjoy Jenny

12-22-2011, 03:55 PM

12-23-2011, 04:42 PM

12-23-2011, 07:26 PM

12-23-2011, 07:47 PM
Welcome everyone! :D:yes::jiggy:

12-23-2011, 07:48 PM
MountainandClouds, I hope you join us!

12-23-2011, 11:16 PM
I have several cards here that I have been sitting on for a while - all using colouring pencils. Would it be okay to send them? Or would you rather we made something specially?

12-24-2011, 01:24 PM
LemurKat, as usual they are beautiful, but I love the the compostion. Was there a reason for bugs? they are awesome, and eels, just between you and I aren't that pretty and taste like mud. My grandfather thought they were a delicasy and maybe in Italy they were, but they seriously taste like what they eat. I always thought they should be left to there lakes, ponds, and oceans. But I love him and SunTrade I want him:D

When I don't have a set theme in place - I revert to "draw more NZ Naturally cards" for my collection. As I have already drawn most of the birds, almost all of the mammals and many of the butterflies, this now leaves me with insects, fish and reptiles. Hence the bugs. I should do some more spiders too, but I'm always a bit leary with sending spiders in to swaps because so many people do not share my affection for them.

12-24-2011, 04:22 PM
well I don't care what you draw it's always great

12-25-2011, 04:51 AM
So to reiterate my former question -

Suntrade, is it okay if I use cards I already have on hand, as long as they fit the theme?

12-25-2011, 10:11 PM
Lemurkat, I'm with Jennie; anything you draw should fit the theme since you are a master of colored pencil! Also, any of the players would be happy to have one of your cards.

I made a melted crayon owl. If this is an acceptable technique, I would like to join the swap.

12-26-2011, 05:37 AM
I want to play! I've taken Prismacolor colored pencil classes and have been wanting to do some 'mini' pictures.

12-26-2011, 01:59 PM
Sorry I have not answer before! I was taking a couple of days to dedicate completely to my family for the holidays .... Lemurkat, you do not need to ask, you know your cards are outstanding as always! Kat, your card is made with crayons so of course it fits the theme.

Welcome everyone! Thanks so much for joining! I have updated the list. :jiggy:

12-26-2011, 03:08 PM
I absolutely love your card Kat. I had thought of using that process too

12-26-2011, 03:53 PM
Interesting, I have no idea of how that process goes either ... and would love to know!

BTW I hope everyone had a great holiday! ;)

12-26-2011, 06:27 PM
I learned the melted crayon technique at AFA Dallas last summer. Crayons are melted on the sole plate of a mini iron. Then, you paint with the mini iron, repeating the process. I like the effect best when more than one color is melted at a time. After applying the crayon, the piece (which is face down on layers of plain newsprint) is ironed from the back, forcing the wax from the crayon into the newsprint and leaving the pigment from the crayon in the artwork. While the piece is still hot residual wax can be rubbed off with a paper towel. Watch your fingers everything's pretty hot! After the piece is dry, some minor alterations can be made using a white eraser on the front of the piece.

Before using this technique, I draw with acid-free markers and pen, paint with watercolor , and/or color with crayons (in a traditional mode). It's really hard to alter the piece after the crayon has been melted because there is usually some wax left. However, I have been successful to a moderate degree with colored pencils and micron pens.

I hope this helps. I really enjoy the effect. My spouse gave me a very good compass for Christmas, so my first card since then included circles. I drew them with an acid-free Sharpie pen on a blank sent to me, so I do not know what the paper is. It's fairly heavy, about 90-120 lb., and textured.

12-26-2011, 07:22 PM
Thanks for sharing Kat! They sound like a lot of work! But the effect is really beautiful. I may try this one day.....

12-26-2011, 07:41 PM
Oh good hubby, Kat. Mine gave me a Hobby Lobby gift card

12-26-2011, 07:59 PM
Can I please jion this swap... hope I did this the right way now.

Thanks for welcoming kids! My daughter loves doing ATCs but there just aren't that many opportunities...and it seems the PIF swaps never really work out right. Here are the cards she made yesterday.

01-02-2012, 03:13 PM

01-02-2012, 10:12 PM
My 9 y/o thinks he wants to play, but I'd like to wait for him to actually draw the cards before committing him.

01-03-2012, 01:44 PM
I've written an address label and sealed it - is that okay? Or should I open it and send a self address envelope instead?

01-03-2012, 01:59 PM
Lemurkat, that is fine! Do not worry, I will get an envelope. Actually any international player that would like to do that is fine, as it will weight less to mail.

Catcraddle, let me know!

01-03-2012, 02:07 PM
If you open my envelope carefully, you might be able to reuse it - it's a window envelope.

01-04-2012, 10:14 AM
My son (age 5) would like to play. His name is John. I will lurk until I finish a couple more projects.

01-06-2012, 03:36 PM
I'm so sorry but I must withdraw from your swap. I feel terrible about it, but I have health issues that make it impossible for me to work on my art for a while. I will still watch the thread to see all the other beautiful cards when I'm able.
Dena Cottrell

01-06-2012, 03:50 PM
Dena, do not worry. Your health is the most important thing. Please take care of yourself, and I hope you will be well soon!

01-06-2012, 09:55 PM
Sign me up please :) Colored pencils are my regular medium and my mom got me the most rocking set of crayons for Christmas. There are even some with sparkles and metallic colors. When I opened it I was so excited and my grandmother laughed out loud because I'm 25 and a set of 70 crayons was like my favorite gift :D

01-06-2012, 10:42 PM
Glad to have you Katrina!

i know what you mean! Art goodies are like candy to me!:laugh:

I am still learning to use these ediums where the results does look profesional. So any tips are welcome!

01-07-2012, 12:30 PM
Sun please add me to the swap :)

01-07-2012, 12:39 PM
I am lurking right now; I'd love to join but I have to see if I can finish the cards for the other swaps before I join another one. Let's hope I can do it. :jiggy:

01-07-2012, 12:41 PM
How does it work if my 4yr old daughter is interested? I don't want anyone to be disappointed in their returns if they don't desire children's cards. Are there enough other kids playing that you could swap hers for other kid-done cards? I will lurk for now... thanks in advance for your reply, Maria!

01-07-2012, 02:21 PM
I don't mind getting a card from a child, if it comes down to that :) I'm sure I'm not the only one.

01-07-2012, 02:24 PM
I personally love cards from kids. They are the artists of tomorrow. Some are already really good if you look through the thread. What we did last time there was a swap that included children, those of us that sent cards, could ask to receive only children's cards and that left enough cards for the for all the children to get at least one adult card. I got some really good art. One young lady does photography that was awesome. I would be willing to be the first on the list Maria for all Children's cards. It would add to my collection

I was thinking on swapping kids with kids, unless someone mentions an interest on a kids card. Some of them are pretty cool!

01-07-2012, 02:29 PM
Hope you can come back Clopina! Love to have you!

01-07-2012, 02:30 PM
Jennie, I so agre with you. Some artist spend a lot of their adult artist time to go back to that state!

01-07-2012, 03:09 PM
I hope she plays, Locatray. My son (5) would love to get some cards from people close to his age.

Hi, there,
My daughter (age 16) and I would both like to sign up. I may add a couple of students of mine (also teens) later if they'd like to play.
This is great because my daughter would LOVE to do more swaps but is under the legal age limit!!!

01-10-2012, 06:49 PM
Spirit soul I am signing you and your daughter! I also have a smiley swap going on that she might be interested on signing up for! Check it out! :jiggy:

01-11-2012, 03:05 PM
Did you know crayons now come with a "secret access code?" I guess it's for crayola.com. At least, I assume it's not to launch missiles or anything. I was surprised. (In other words, I've started on these.)

01-11-2012, 03:41 PM
I have seen some packages that do! But they are for uploading your photo and becoming turning it into a cartoon character or something! I thought it was pretty cool!

01-11-2012, 07:04 PM
Lemurkat your fantastic cards are here!

01-11-2012, 07:36 PM

01-12-2012, 02:10 PM
Welcome Idolores!

01-13-2012, 08:33 PM
I tried a new colored pencil card. Still cannot get them the way I want! Arghhh! But I got a set of Prismacolor pencils, so maybe is just my cheap ones! LOL

I heard some people use odorless medium to blend. Anyone has any tips on this?

01-13-2012, 10:32 PM
Maria you will find with the prismacolors that you don't have that colored pencil dust, and they hold up to being able to press for more color saturation. I have Gamsol mineral spirits. It's odorless, but a very little goes a long way, or you have a greasy mess. I use mineral spirits in my glass cutters too. I always work with a fan that blows away from me when I work with anything like that though

01-14-2012, 09:44 PM
Thanks Jennie! I have a green alternative odorless mineral spirits I use for oil paints that I will try!

01-16-2012, 06:20 PM
Of course Husum! Glad to have you!

01-17-2012, 09:39 AM

01-18-2012, 03:37 PM
Ok, I've made the most astonishing discovery. I like to draw! I spent 35 years thinking I hated drawing, but then I negotiated a deal with these magic crayons (and their secret access code) that if I shut off my brain, they will do the work. It was so much fun! Uploading scans and then I'll get these in the mail.

01-18-2012, 03:49 PM
Cynthia, I can't wait to see what you create!

01-18-2012, 04:50 PM
Cynthia they're cute. Magic crayons huh

01-18-2012, 08:28 PM
They are great Cynthia! So happy you stuck with it!

01-18-2012, 09:35 PM
I love the blue flower! It's beautiful :) Crayons have a really interesting quality to them and totally remind me of being a kid. I love the waxy smell.

01-19-2012, 07:53 AM
Here are my last two. They are based on the theme of the latest swap I'm hosting: Big Blue. The first is watercolor pencil with pen and the second is colored pencils with pen.

Here is "Marine Battle," one of the many scenes Delbert draws in his spare time at school.

http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/6154/small/1_delmarine.jpg (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=281398) Again, colored pencil. He was playing with my blending stumps to get richer coloring on his squid and background. This kid's imagination amazes me!
This is linked to my gallery. :D

Spirit Soul
03-01-2012, 04:20 PM
The swap is until March 10? Doesn't it say the due date is Feb. 27?

03-01-2012, 04:55 PM
The swap is until March 10? Doesn't it say the due date is Feb. 27?

I believe that is referring to the turn around time limit. Two weeks to get cards swapped and returned.

Oops sorry. I am so crazy. I will fixed it! :embarrassed:

OK So we are complete! I will swap before the end of the weekend!

03-06-2012, 08:46 PM
OK. Guys cards are postal! Hope you all enjoy your returns. Sorry about the mixed up with the dates .... what happened is that I had picked March 10, and the moderators changed it for me to February, because there is a limit for the turned around. So I had March 10 in my calendar.

03-08-2012, 05:26 PM
My returns are here! Thanks to Mariloupatch, mdkragon, & Cherie for their art & to Suntrade for hosting this fun idea.

Got mine! Ok, I've got some kids' cards, so, I hope parents will recognize these and pass on my kudos: Reya age 13: "Indian Squigllys." I'm just amazed at the detail and time it must have taken, thanks! And then Mallika (I think) age 15, beautiful "Hope Angel." I really love this and especially great job on the wings, which look very 3-D. Also, Jiliyan, I got your "Abstract Construction." Great colors and a fab addition to my abstract collection. :)

Thanks, everyone, and thanks, SunTrade! (Love the extras and little packet.)
