01-01-2012, 07:33 PM
Welcome Nimo Glad to have you

01-02-2012, 02:31 PM
I'd like to know if abstract fabric would be ok. I'm thinking of joining. LOL:cute:

01-02-2012, 03:11 PM
A little confused are you telling me that you want to paint fabric in an abstract manner. That is great. But you have to do something to the fabric if it's pre-printed.

01-02-2012, 05:14 PM
I guess my question wasn't clear. I have pre-printed fabric that that I'd sew together like quilting. Is that ok?

01-02-2012, 07:32 PM
Mine are almost done. I did some embroidery, so hope that is OK. Will post soon.

01-02-2012, 08:25 PM
OOOOO I can't wait to see them

01-03-2012, 04:43 PM
Sharlene, I'm perpetually confused so you probably did ask it correctly, and I was having one of my  moments. Yes printed fabric that is quilted is wonderful. Everyone can use any fabric, you just have to do something to it that is artistic.

01-03-2012, 04:44 PM
Ok so should I add Sharlene and Tambilina?

01-03-2012, 05:04 PM
Yes, add me. I've been wanting to do something with my fabric stash.

01-03-2012, 06:28 PM
Wonderful can't wait to see them done

01-04-2012, 02:49 PM
Jennie I love this idea! But for right now I am going to be a lurker.

There are so many fantastic fabric artists here I really want to be part of it.

I have patterns pulled to cross stitch pictures, but seems like my plans always get changed (today for example I have my grandson who came home sick from school) so I don't want to commit until I am close to finished.

I will be watching and stitching as I can..................

01-04-2012, 05:52 PM
I sent my fabric cards today. Now I'm wondering if they had to be fabric through and through? I put cereal box board on the backs of mine. If they are wrong, please let me know.

01-04-2012, 06:53 PM
Xstitcher I sure understand. I have been trying to get one swap done for the past 10 days. DH took vacation time. We got nothing done nor did we go anywhere, but it was nice to have him home.

01-04-2012, 06:56 PM
I see no problem with stiffening up a beautiful card. I can't wait to see them.

Sophie's mom
01-05-2012, 01:37 PM
I've been lurking and finally dug into my HUGE collection of fabrics! Here's what I came up with. Will send four when I get your address. Thanks for a fun swap.90217

01-05-2012, 05:01 PM
Welcom bartev glad to have you

01-05-2012, 07:30 PM
Is it of to use buttons, or do the cards need to be flat? Just wondering...

01-05-2012, 07:43 PM
I love buttons! Try to keep the button not too high. obviously big dome buttons aren't the best idea

01-05-2012, 11:09 PM
I am lurking for the moment. I also don't want to commit until I am sure that I can decide what I want to do. I do have a question....how should your info be attached to the back? Written on or a sticky label? ??

01-06-2012, 02:53 AM
I would like to join please. :-)

01-06-2012, 09:38 AM
KaliedescopeLs You can do one of a couple of things.
If a sticky lable sticks that's great
if your piece it too floppy it needs to be backed with a thin cardboard- (cereal box is fine.)
If you have sandwiched a card in the middle for strength and stitched around it you can write on the back piece of fabric. With this you must have a card inbetween or it will soak through to you front side and ruin it. Let me know if I can add your name to the list.

Welcome Esew glad to have you with us I'll add you to the list.

01-06-2012, 03:41 PM

From one Wendy to another- soldering iron!!?? I assume it's some fabric welding device and not the common metal work variety. Although that sounds like fun!! Hmmm....

02-02-2012, 04:04 PM
I would like to know about that too. Wendy, they are really great

02-02-2012, 06:56 PM

I've heard of a lot of Fabric Artists using the common metal work variety of soldering iron.

How and for what technique? Galzart is it to melt ribbon and fabric that isn't like cotton?

02-03-2012, 12:14 AM
How and for what technique? Galzart is it to melt ribbon and fabric that isn't like cotton?

I really haven't explored it, but I assume that would be the use for it. There are a lot of items that could be melted...it could also be used to "burn out" certain areas of the fabric. Guess I should start reading some of my books on fabric manipulation to find other uses.

Jennie: Melting fabric. I have been on several Margaret Beal workshops, and bought one of her soldering irons. It has a very fine tip, I think the more industrial ones would be too thick. The soldering iron actually melts the two fabrics together, so it acts like a sewn seam, but without the bulk. It works really well on polyester organza. and will work on Kumin felt which is a synthetic felt. It doesn't work on natural fibres. If you point your heat gun onto a synthetic fabric it will melt it, and give very interseting results. Do be careful of fumes, and do not overdo the heat in one spot. When my cards come you will see that the lines on them are done with the soldering iron. Always use a metal ruler, and watch your fingers don't get in the way. You can also put several layers of organza together and solder round a metal shape, charm etc, and make some really great embellishments.

Wendy, that's such an interesting idea!

02-08-2012, 10:20 AM

Wonderful nadiabekker, thanks for joining, glad to have you

02-12-2012, 01:20 PM
Jennie, I'm hoping I'll have time for this - I have the week off and intend to spend the better part of a day making fabric ATCs for one thing and another :) So, sign me up and I'll let you know ASAP if I can't make it!

02-12-2012, 01:29 PM
I'm a little late to the discussion, but I also have a fined-tipped Margaret Beal soldering iron which I have used to make ATCs (among other things) - sometimes I just use it to remove fabric to leave a frame, like on these cards: http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=185797

Other times, I stitch through an organza layer with FMQ and then remove pieces of organza, like these:

It's a fun technique to use (though I have to admit, I don't always use a metal ruler - I go freehand quite a lot!)

02-12-2012, 02:08 PM
Thank you Kate more wonderful ideas. Thanks for joining.

I was saying to my husband that I really didn't want to use my stained glass Weller soldering iron that's adjustable for glass, and he reminded me that I had an old one to start with. I have to take steel wool to the tip (flux is very messy) and then I'll have one to work with that isn't very hot.

I have a Walnut Hollow heat tool that came with a number of tips, including a knife tip! I may have to get that tool out to work on the fabric, even if I just burn some designs into the fabric.

That's a Woodburning Kit, isn't it? I have one somewhere. Never thought it in conjunction with fabric.

I think the concensus is if it's pointy and can become hot try it

Actually, they sell as a "paper burner" but it works on wood veneer, too. My gallery has several examples. (and it burns fingers, too)

Yes. Yes it is.

02-14-2012, 01:16 PM
No it's not too late! The work neeeds to be here by the 10th of march so plenty of time.
Welcome glad to have you MadLou23, to the swap and to the AFA site. Please read the first post for instructions. If you have any questions please PM me. I'd be happy to answer.

02-14-2012, 07:57 PM
Thanks Jennie. I use a lot of recycled and natural wools in my other works. I'm thinking maybe some demin and a bit of felting here, but we'll see what evolves. Never thought of doing fabric ATCs... what a brilliant idea!

02-14-2012, 08:42 PM
I'd like to take credit for it, but all those sewers and quilters, x stichers, embroiderers in our AFA family have done this many times before. We are blessed with a very talented group around here

02-15-2012, 04:22 PM

02-15-2012, 08:28 PM
It's true we do have incredible talent here. I'm lucky to host such a great group

02-15-2012, 10:30 PM
To all of my wonderful newbies, and those of you who aren't new. Please put your site name on your work and your envelope. I'm middle aged, that means I'm starting senility, please don't make me hunt down who did what. Also, I was surprised to see that a lot of you don't use the gallery. Is there a better place that you are posting your wonderful art?

02-17-2012, 01:15 AM

Bunny is stitched! Now, I'm working on quilting the card.

Tip for quilting ATCs: Instead of using quilt batting (even low-loft is too thick most of the time) use a piece of felt. Cut it to ATC size, wrap and pin your fabric around the edges, mitering your corners. Quilt as usual.

02-17-2012, 05:54 PM
Good Idea, I've just pull the low lift bat into seperate sheets, It's about 4 sheets thick. I've also used really thin foam rubber.

02-18-2012, 08:43 PM
I just bought a large roll of fabric stabilizer. Bigger than I would have because I plan on using it for ATCs and clothing. Both of my girls have asked for embroidered shirts.

Also, since I sew a lot of their dresses they use for play in the summer, it will be good for adding embroidery to those.

02-18-2012, 09:48 PM
I love fabric stabilizers, especially the ones that just wash away. I used that a lot when I cross stitched on the girls Christmas dresses each year

Ok so we have roughly 2 and a half weeks to go. So if anyone is out of country, probably will want to send it by the end of the week. Remember, we don't want people to have to wait unless of course it's the fault of our friends at the post. So everything needs to be post marked in time. I really appreciate when they are, and I know what a wonderful group this is. I'm so lucky.

Hey I know that you all love fabric, and sewing. i'd like to do another swap similar. Should I do certain colors, a specific style, all one theme? Anyone have any Ideas? What would you like to work on?

I think a theme or color scheme would work, but style is a little more difficult. This is a diverse group, so stating all cross stitch or all quilting may exclude or discourage some potential players. JMO

Jennie a colour theme is always good to work with. I've always meant to do something with the colour I like the least, it could be an interesting challenge! I agree with cat's cradle to keep the style open to all types.
(promise I'll get my photos up soon)

Cat's Cradle
02-24-2012, 05:06 PM
I like the idea of a monochromatic theme of "the color you least like." That could make some interesting cards indeed!

02-24-2012, 05:11 PM
Hmmm. That would be interesting but some of us might not have fabric in a color we don't like.

02-24-2012, 06:15 PM
Absolutely Cheryl. I have very little green material or ribbon. Darn it if it isn't something growing it doesn't need to be green.

I didn't mean style in that sense. I am after all a believer in all things fabric or thread, string's, ribbons, canvas you name it. With the acception of crochet and knitting, I'm proficient with it all.

What i was looking for is more of a theme. I really don't care for monocromatic art. It's just not my cup of tea. But I could see us doing maybe one color with a tad of another color. then people would have enough materials because they could use either color as the base and either as the pop of color.

I do like that. So start throwing out color combos and lets see what comes up. Cat no, we can not call purple and lavendar 2 colors ;)

OOOO, I like! Pink and Black So 1950s.

One of DH and my houses had a pink and black tiled bathroom. A lot of Pink and Black tile all in a 5 foot by 5 foot bathroom. Yes that was 25 feet of tile, half way up on the wall and the shower had the same tile but all the way to the ceiling. This 25 foot bathroom had a toilet, which was right at the wall on one side and the sink on the other. I measured one day and it was exactly 17 inches from the edge of the sink to the wall. The shower stal was 2ft wide x 5 feet long right next to the sink. You had to leave to change your mind

02-25-2012, 12:15 PM
I love pink & black. White would be nice with both. Lot of pink & black fabric .

I have an old house with old white tiles and black trim. I love pink towels in there. My downstairs BR (a closet originally)is 24 inches wide! No sink. Every who opens the door laughs. We call it the peepee closet. My brother doesn't fit in there.

02-25-2012, 01:55 PM
I think. The home we had before the pink and black one had a bathroom under the stairs. In there was a stackable washer and dryer right under the top landing. then there was this tiny little sink that was mybe ten inches wide x 8 inches deep. I really think it came out of a camper trailer. Now to use it you sort of had to tip so you didn't hit your head (and I'm only 5'3" then directly across from the washer dryer was a toilet, that you had to lean forward to use. It did beat taking 2 little girls upstairs every 10 minutes when I was potty training. My oldest did everything very early from speaking to walking to reading. Unfortunately verbal censership she wasn't good with. I would refer to it as the laundry room, Vieve jumped in with that's where I pee. She was so excited about using the big girl potty but it sounded really bad to the other 3 couple and their kids that were visiting.

Ok start on your pink and black wonders that will be the next great swap after I close this one

02-25-2012, 06:59 PM
Mine will be going in the post on Monday. Where does the time go? Can't believe the deadline on this swap is nearly here...

02-25-2012, 07:07 PM

02-25-2012, 07:15 PM
LOL - and wasn't it the 80s, just like last week or so?!

02-25-2012, 07:18 PM
Kate I was glancing at your blogs and the pics of you kids making pasta just melted my heart. My own girls started making pasta and gnochie when one was 5 and the other was 2. Before that I tried to make it during nap time. My little one could eat more potato gnochie than me at a sitting. Since they've grown I've retired the hand crank version to my polymer clay and bought an electric one that fits on my kitchenaid mixer

02-25-2012, 07:24 PM

02-26-2012, 01:58 PM
Haven't started it yet, CDN. We were deciding on colors for the next few swaps. If you have a request post it.

I will post it probably just about the time that this one ends. So it would go like March 10th to May 30th. In fact I'll probably start a new one after that about every 4 to 6 weeks. When you host you can only have 6 open swaps at a time. I do have 2 that are just closing, and 2 each month after that, but only one will be a fabric swap, I have an Altered key swap, just finished a paperdoll swap, doing earth magnet tops in one, An Easter, Christ has risen triptych swap and a swap using art metal. (a thicker than foil, not as thick as sheet metal.)

In the art metal series I wil choose a different odd material to use. I have been working with glass, (my main medium), art glass which is a thicker plastic that is painted like a stained glass, I am also looking into some other things that might be interesting to work with

02-26-2012, 05:22 PM

03-03-2012, 08:08 PM
Well if you are having wind like we've been having here then yes print your charts. Out here we are lucky because most of our electrical is undergroud in the newer neighborhoods. Which is great until your electricity goes past an old neighborhood or someone hits a electrical box on the side of the road. Last weeks wind was brutal and we are so dry that the dust caused a huge pileup

I think I'm just gonna use a pen on the waste canvas, then I don't have to worry about losing the paper charts later. :D

The wind has knocked the roof off the dog house, so it's pretty strong. Last time we had these nasty winds, my grill got knocked end-over-end a couple of times. There's still lava rock on the drive under the snow! (Seriously don't know if the grill will still work, either!) :err:

03-03-2012, 08:58 PM
That wind can be brutal. Two years ago, we had a tree fall on our house during a storm. Our neighbors had 5 trees go down in their yard. They were lucky that none fell on their house.
