Materials required: One blank Japanese Moleskine accordion style pocket album. Approximate size is 3.5" x 5.5". Available at Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Moleskine-Japanese-Album-Pocket/dp/8883701046/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325706833&sr=8-1) and at MoleskineUS here. http://www.moleskineus.com/japanesebook.html

AFA says you Must:
•Be an actively trading AFA member (defined as: positive itrader across 2 swaps in the last 3 months)
•Have 3+ months in good standing (no neutrals or negative iTraders)
•Have an iTrader rating of 25+
•Be willing and able to do your very best work on a strict, inflexible time line, over a long period
•Be willing and able to complete three (3) 3x5 journal pages in the themes chosen by your fellow participants
•Have the cash resources necessary to ship eight (10) journals around the world using First Class mail with mandatory tracking

It is also mandatory that you share your mailing address, a phone number, and a contact person to the host. This is to be sure no journals go MIA - info will only be shared with your fellow Moley members.

You're responsible for:
•Choosing and explaining your theme. Each artist will choose their own theme, color scheme/do and don’ts, and special instructions for their own moley’s. You may choose "No theme" if you want participants to "follow their muse."
•Creating a three (3) page spread in each journal you receive.
• Include at least your name, username, and date completed on the back of your spread.
•Shipping to the next artist participant. Use a well padded bubble envelope, sturdy box or a small Flat Rate Box.
•Paying for First Class mail and MANDATORY tracking/Delivery Confirmation.

Artist Instructions:
1. Decorate the covers, if you choose. This may be completed either before or after the journal travels through the rotation. Some prefer to decorate before, to establish theme, palette, and mood. Some prefer to decorate after, to prevent damage to cover art. You decide!

2. Please include: (1) Your real name and address; (2) your username; (3) your assigned "travel-plan"; (4) a sign-in area for artists; and (5) any special instructions; in the opening pages of your book -- which you should also decorate.

3. In addition to decorating your opening, informational pages, please create one, 3-4 page spread in your own Moleskine journal. Yet another opportunity to establish theme.

4. Be sure to "fix" your art well, to prevent smudging. Allow plenty of time for drying before shipping. Wax paper or tissue paper between pages is a great idea.

5. Please communicate regularly via email, PM, or preferably, in this thread, whenever you have (1) received or (2) shipped a book. Include tracking numbers. We're all investing a huge amount of time, talent, and care in this project, and we want to see everyone's Moleskine journal home safely.

6. Most important: Be creative, do your very best work, stretch yourself, and have a blast!

Travel Plans:
Please note that the order of mailing will differ for each journal. Yes, this is absolutely more confusing than mailing to the same artist after each round of creating. The reasons behind jostling the order of mailing are (1) To keep the swap lively and challenging, by changing the person you're "working toward" in each round; and (2) To balance shipping costs across all participants.

RED = ACTIVE (Actively working on pages.)
PURPLE = TRAVELING (Journal en route to next player.)
GREEN = COMPLETED
PINK = Needs to do a tip in for completion
GREY- Gone MIA - everyone can send tip-ins to replace.

To another beautiful journey...
May your moleys always be undamaged,
May your paper never buckle, and
May the post always be early!
May you never spill ink on the previous masterpiece,
May the wind never blow crap onto your wet paint,
May your kid never mash your moley into his oatmeal,
And may your mailman not be named Newman.

Oooo I'm excited too! So a few questions...and you may have already answered these...
Can we mail out earlier than the 25th?
How do I exchange addresses (PM or will their be a list somewhere)?
I'm missing ShayNOLA on my exchange list...IDK?

Yay! I'm so excited and I just can't hide it... whoa sorry I'll try to keep the sporadic bouts of my-lifes-a-musical-ism to a minimum :)

HolleyRae

Can I put ShayNola as the last person in my rotation before it comes back to me? It looks like she isn't in the last swap group.

HotMamaRama
01-01-2012, 07:31 PM
Thanks for pointing that out HolleyRae. I'll go back and check my master list and make the correction so Shay is in the right order for your mailing. When I went back and changed names, it probably just got accidentally deleted.

With regards to mailing out early, I'm fine with it IF you first check with the person you are mailing to, & let us know in the thread that it is going postal. That way I can mark it correctly on the first page where the book is in the rotation.

What we don't want to have happen, is for someone to get behind or overwhelmed with 2 or 3 books at one time. It can happen and then other artists are stuck with no book for long periods of time.

Re: exchanging addresses, once I have everyones contact information, I will PM everyone with a master address list for easier mailing.

Great questions BTW! :)

I had this interesting idea posted in the original thread for my theme, but think I'm going to change it and make it simpler.

Artist choice of animal(s) in its natural environment. What ever medium you're most comfortable with.

HotMamaRama

This is what ShayNOLA had in the other thread for a theme:

I'm still thinking to go with a "Gardens Around the World' theme. Some ideas are a Japanese garden with gieshas, koi fish and cherry blossom trees; an Indian garden with bright colors and architectural design elements (lots of intricate details), Buddha statues, etc; New Orleans style gardens with ferns, palms, live oaks with spanish moss and black wrought iron fences or sitting area; A tropical/Mexican garden with elements of Mexican tile/pottery, salamanders, palms, etc; a Dutch garden with windmill and tulips; a roman garden among ruins; a lush, wild english garden with cottage; a Moroccan garden, a french colonial Vietnamese garden... LOL, the ideas are endless!
I would like it to be mostly HP/HD but I wouldn't mind seeing some simple collage elements mixed throughout.... nothing chunky. I'm not into the fibers and I know this goes with out saying, but no stickers.
I envision bold, lively, vivid colors... no pastels. I love intricate patterns, so a bit of zentangling and/or zetti would be nice. I will try to incorporate all these elements in my first three pages.

Here is HolleyRaes Theme:

Moley Theme:
Words and Art Ingnite - Create a three page consecutive spread inspired by your favorite collection of words (lyrics, poem, quote, proverb, etc). Include your word inspiration somewhere within the art of your spread and clearly write them again on the back of your pages. To keep the fire burning, create “lead-ins” from your spread to the next one… helping to ignite the creative endeavor.

Oh I loved your idea with the tinga tinga paintings!!!! That is such a cool style and was looking forward to the challenge. So if I can pull it off, would you still be okay with my attempt at that style??? :D

for those that didn't get to see what Fluffycat's first theme idea was, here's what she had posted in the other thread....

I've got my theme. Animals in a garden in the style of tinga tinga paintings.

Here's the background on tinga tinga paintings
http://www.tingatingastudio.com/menu_paintings1.html

if you google tinga tinga paintings and view results through 'images' you'll get many more examples of what I'm looking for. I love all the bright colors and the patterning. Pick what ever animal(s) you like best and give them a colorful garden. You can do a different scene for each of your three pages or combine all of your pages together to make one longer scene. hand drawn hand painted with what ever materials you enjoy working with. My only concern with collage (and I like collage) would be the pages sticking together and all collage sticks. NC is so dang humid it makes all of that stuff even worse.

Genxster
01-03-2012, 01:06 PM
My theme is artist's choice. Whatever anyone wants to do for the three-pages is fine. I'd prefer hd/hp, but some collage is fine.

BTW, I don't understand Hollyrae's theme. Can she elaborate or post some sort of example? Not sure what kind of art she wants with text.

Looking at these themes I'm starting to feel a bit limited here, but I'll do my best.

MEL!!!!! :wubclub: I was just thinking about you!!!! :)

You will do wonderful with these themes, no need to be so hard on yourself!!!! You are an amazing artist and I know you can handle this!!! And keep in mind, that everyone's book will have the first few pages already done according to the style and theme that they chose. Thus setting the tone and giving us all a jumping off point.

HotMamaRama
01-03-2012, 01:25 PM
And just a reminder for everyone :
The beauty & challenge of these themes and diffference in styles is what makes these moley exchanges so exciting and fun. The object isn't to have all the pages look the same, but rather exemplify each artists style while maintaining continuity through the theme. :)
We all have our own style (or if you are like me, you're still trying to figure it out - ha ha) These book swaps are meant to be fun and creative. We get to spend a year together creating art and hanging out together! Think of it as a big "Show & Tell" like we used to do in Elementary School. :)

We will have good days, bad days, great days, and life happens during this whole time. The key to making this swaps successful is keeping the lines of communication open in the thread and in messages. Do that, and we will all have a grand time!!!! :)

(This concludes this public service annoucement. Creative programming will continue at this time.)

My Moley Theme for #16 is.... "Your favorite movie from the 30's, 40's, and 1950's.
This will be a layout of Your Movie Retrospect with one or more memorable Quote(s) from the movie you've choosen to draw.

Example: 1936's Little Women with Joan Bennett, Katherine Hepburn.

Artists would draw a scene or, your interruptation of a particular frame in the movie that effects you. Then write (on your layout) your favorite quote or quotes from the movie you have drawn.

So I could draw Katherine Hepburn walking into her next-door neighbors study room and she is overwhelmed at the site of hundreds of books upon the surrounding shelves.

And then on my layout I would write : "Christopher Columbus!"

It was Katharine Hepburn, playing Jo in George Cukor's 1933 film, who was first forced to cry ''Christopher Columbus!'' over and over.

I would prefer hd/hp. Your layout can be done in black and white or color. If you have any questions let me know. I will try and post my Moley layout ASAP.

WOW!! Deb that is going to be one amazing book come next year!! :) I'm terrible with old movies - I know old TV shows better than the old movies. LOL Fortunately, my sister is an avid fan of that genre of film so I'll be sure to pick her brain for ideas!!!! Guess I better start practice drawing Cary Grant. ;)

Genxster,
To help clarify... :)
I really enjoy seeing what people envision when they hear their favorite favorite quote, song lyric, or a good ol' saying. Basically, you can choose any set of text and then illustrate what it makes you think of or feel. I don't have any expectations of a specific style or color scheme for this book so ever spread can be wildly different. And as for the text, it can play a minor or major role in your overall image; it doesn't matter to me as long as I can read it! The only aesthetic request that I have is that each artist allows their image to leak over the 3rd pages border... creating an irregular flow between the sections and challenging the next artist to "work with" the lead-ins. I think it will spice up the transitions a bit!

I'll post an image of my 1st three pages so you can see what I've dreamed up.

HolleyRae

Ooooo DebbaPoet,

Can you suggest some of your favorite movies from those eras? I have some super favorites from that time frame in cinema ranging from Gone with the Wind and Casablanca to Frankenstein and The Searcher. Is there a specific type of film that you are looking for... romance, horror, drama, comedy?

Hmmmmm...Oh, I'd love to have a "Movie Theme Night" with my gal pals centered around your favs! We really go all out with themed food, clothes, and anything else we can think of! I think THIS has the makings of an awesome night :)

HotMamaRama
01-03-2012, 08:41 PM
Holley - your movie them night sounds like so much fun! And the idea of matching food and clothes, etc. I bet sure makes the night fun!

My in-laws gave us a novelty old movie theatre style popcorn popper for Christmas. It's like a mini version of what you see at the theatre. perfect for making family movie night even more fun!

HolleyRae
01-03-2012, 10:48 PM
Here's the opening of my moley. I'm trying out a different style from my "usual" :)

One of my favorite quotes is...
"Slight not what's near, while aiming at what's far." -Euripides

This is the imagery the quote makes me think of. I constantly need to remember to just BE and appreciate what is right here, right now and quit living for tomorrows. *Sigh* You only get one chance to live This day.

I hope this kinda helps explain my theme. Yours does not have to have the same mood, style, or media though. I just want your visual representation of a text...any text.

HollyRae and other groupies!! (tee hee, that sounds too funny tonight!)
For my theme of movies from the 30's, 40's, and 50's can be any film/movie from these time periods.
You might want to hop on over to Turner Classic Movies at: http://www.TCM.com

I have too many favorites to list, but here are just a few of some of my favorite:

To Kill A Mockingbird, Major and the Minor, Tale of Two Cities, CasaBlanca
Maltese Falcon, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Showboat, Fiddler on the Roof
DungaDin, Any Hitchcock movies (like North by NorthWest), Singing in the Rain
The court jester, The Girl with Green Eyes, Pillow Talk, Wizard of OZ, Susan Slept Here

Sorry if that's not much help, but if you still have questions send me a pm and I can send you more info.

Hugs!

Thanks, Wild. I'm very jazzed!
I've decided on a rather easy theme:"Bees, Butterflies and Blossoms". Actually I'd like anything in a floral or vegetable garden. Think: bees, butterflies, birds, bird houses, mushrooms, all kinds of plants, people, structures. It doesn't matter if the artist wants to do a consecutive layout or 3 different ones. Mostly hd/hp but simple collage elements are OK too. I love jewel tones and muted colors. Any season, though spring, summer and fall would be best. Writing is fine when it adds to the art. If I haven't made myself clear, please ask. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions as we go along.
Can't wait to get started!

My TITLE IS: It's whats inside that counts

I'd like the pages to flow from one to the other if possible. On your pages add all things that you love. It does not have to be a chain or charms...but it would be great if somehow you could extend a ribbon or something at the top to join each page to look connected in some creative way..please also feel free to fill in with written words, positive affirmations, verse, poetry, short story ..OH (I love it all)
Pen and inks, pencil etc-I'd love to see more sepia tones...but I love color too, of course....I am crazy for fine line and detailing.
I love the artwork of Andrea Joseph and love her style of written words mingling in and around the artwork. Sort of on that idea but in your own original and wonderful style.
COLORS: just not to fond of pepto pink.
Color choices of Sepia tones, burnt sienna, mossy greens. Old gem tones, wood, metals coppers and verdigris....follow your muse
I also love steampunk style alot too.(Like gadgets, gears, air ships etc)
Oddbits of paper collage: Sure but limited, like ONLY on the wording part. I don't mind a small bit of paper word collage well blended into the pen and ink words but drawings should be all original illustration, drawn by your own hand.
I know they will all be awesome.
once I get my first pages completed it will be easy to get the idea and run with it.
.

All the excitement of finally being able to start our group and I forgot to mention the details for my theme. :goofy:

My Theme is: "What Dreams May Come" Inspired by the Movie. I highly recommend (But not required) watching it if you've never seen it. Lots of great imagery and ideas could be generated from it. Colorful gardens, cities in the sky, dark scary hellish abyss, heavenly relm, etc.

The dream theme is not limited to what was in the movie either. Maybe it would look like something out of Land of the Lost. Or Ancient Egypt. Or Planet of the Apes. Or a combination of them all! Ancient Egyptian ape people in a battle with the Sleestak! (Okay so that's a stretch);)
Some of my favorite dreams are when I'm flying, skiing, or deep sea swimming without any gear. Just free styling it! :)

Just like in real dreams, the imagery overlaps and changes as it goes, so please slightly overlap the entries so they seem to blend together into a single panoramic landscape. The scale can be altered by moving objects into the foreground if you prefer to include a close-up. For example, a One-eyed Creature may decide to look out at the artist from the page while the landscape recedes to the background.

I love vivid color but am fine with muted tones and monochromatic layouts too, if used sparingly. As long as it fits the theme. Maybe it's a good dream, maybe a nightmare - either way, the colors should enhance the mood of the "dreamscape". I dream in color, but my husband usually dreams in B&W, with an occational object or two the only thing in color.

I would like only hand-drawn/hand-painted entries in the medium of your choice that best suits your style. (As long as it is archival quality) I'm fine with realistic, whimsical, dark (as in foreboding not satanic or cultish) light and happy whatever floats your boat.

What do you dream about???

I am SO looking forward to this. I do believe I can make something worthwhile for everyone. Thank you all for not asking me to draw fairies in the anime style doing something at Hogwarts!!!! I would be a horrible disappointment.
I am sticking with my theme, that is "Cities and things that happen in them." I don't want anything really horrible or dark (even though.....) but weird, strange, magical and wonderful are just fine!
Also, anyone who wants to do a layout-type panorama - I'd love that! You know, like a scrapbook or collaged page.....
I like Trina's idea of overlapping the pages panorama hotmamarama style, so I'd like that, too.
One burning question from this newbie and I hope I describe this right - when you open your moley from the front (not the pocket side which is the back) there is an inside front cover and then the "In case of loss" page," and the back of that page. Are these the pages that we draw our own first images on? After that page, the moley opens up into three-segment panorama-type pages.
I want to start drawing!

Excellent question darling!! RE: The inside cover and first single/loose page that reads "In case of loss" -- These pages are an excellent place for posting your travel plan, (ie, list the order of who gets your book in what order). Also a good idea to include your name & mailing address somewhere here. (If you read #2 on under Artist Instructions on the first page it's explained there too)

A sign-in area is fine on these first pages -OR- you could also put your sign-in area on the back pocket. I've also seen people make up a little sign-in booklet that was placed inside the back pocket. It's your book so you can put these things in whatever order you prefer.

THEN - when you open to those first 3-4 pages of the accordian style portion of the book, this is where you design the layout to set the tone for the book.

Does this help? :)

here is what I did on my first opening pages of my last moley. I used the whole two pages for just the travel plan.

This was my cover. It was supposed to look like a ships porthole.

This is what I used for my artist sign-in. Since my theme was all about a divers day in search of atlantis, I had the artists sign-in as if they were the diver.

Hi all, so sorry I am late to party. I just found out this thread had already started.

My theme is "A Scene within a Scene" So basically you draw a scene, but then put a smaller scene inside of it. I hope this makes sense. I drew an example of what I want in my first pages.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Also, I think I just realized I made a newbie mistake. I used 3 pages instead of two..oops! Do you wanna kick me out of this already! :embarrassed:

YAY!!!! So glad you are here now Pixiepoo!!!! Now the whole gang is here!!! :wubclub:

A scene within a scene - cool idea! This will take some thinking on my part. ;)

And you did this right!! You do the inside cover and neighboring page. And on the back of the "In case of loss" page you get to do that AND the follow 2-3 pages if you want!!! For mine, I did the back of the "In case of loss" page and the following 3 pages!! By my count, if you do it this way, then there is exactly enough "3 page spreads" for the rest of the artists in the group. This way your book will be completely filled up at the end of the year!!! :) Oh and don't forget your back pocket!! you can decorate that too!

HotMamaRama
01-07-2012, 11:26 AM
Alrighty then - I now have all of your theme descriptions linked to the first page by your name under "Participants & Themes". If you need to add any details, or make changes to your theme description for some reason, PLEASE go back to the thread post where you originally posted your theme and make the changes there. This way, the CORRECT information/instructions will be on the first page.

Rather than surfing through the thread trying to find where they posted their theme details and description, this will make it much easier to find the artist and theme when you get their book.

I know in my last group, I went back to this first page often to reread the artists theme description. It was quite helpful for me, and hope it makes life easier for you as well. :)

Woo Hoo, my moley arrived this morning. I'm handling it like a rare, first edition book! Thanks, HotMama, for clarifying the different pages that I need to do in my book. I'm super excited and at the same time, I've got jitters about making the first marks in the book. Think I'll play with it blank for a few minutes before diving in. I'm lovin' this.

Since a few of us have mentioned allowing for overlap between layouts I thought i would share some examples to help give you the idea. The overlap for my book can be minimal too, just so it flows together. Sorry the panaramic example is so small.

Two last questions - Am I right that I will first send my book to pixiepoo, and will get it back at the end from DebbaPeot? If I am, I will know what I'm doing! And do we pm Hotmamarama that we are working, have mailed. etc so she can change our colors? Whoops, my moley just exploded....Shouldn't fondle it like that.....Gotta go roll it up.

LMAO - exploded... I can't tell you how many times I would be working in a book and have it come unfolded and go flopping all over. I FINALLY caught on to rubber band those extending pages together so they wouldn't go everywhere when I was working on it. HA HA Sometimes I would get so into what I was working on, that I would forget there are pages hanging over the edge of the table. :goofy:

To answer your questions:
~ Yes you are right with the mail out order! :) You send to pixiepoo and DebbaPeot will be the last to work in your book and mail it to you in the end.

~ You're more than welcome to PM me with your progress, but it is also BEST to mention it in the thread for all to see. This helps everyone know what's going on.
Also gives a heads up to the next person on the travel plan so they can be ready and looking for it in the mail. I will change artist's colors at that time.

Since we have so many moley virgins I'm trying to share some examples to help give ideas. Just let me know if I am overwhelming you and I'll stop. ;)

This one is by Grrrdjules (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showpost.php?p=801109&postcount=266). First inside pages. Travel Plan and Her addy info. (which is blurred at the bottomin the photo). A different example (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showpost.php?p=757875&postcount=166) of how she did her travel plan in another book.

Here is an AnnD (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showpost.php?p=763262&postcount=190) example of her opening pages. (Travel Plan and address)

CatPratt (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showpost.php?p=764600&postcount=218) examples of cover, travel plan, and first layout with instructions to artists.

Found Skyjules (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=170440) examples of her back pocket, and artist sign in page. Her Travel plan (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=170439) and artist instructions.

Here is one by Robyyot (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/index.php?n=255020).

As you can see - there are about a million different ways you can do this. Possibilities are endless! Go with whatever works for you - afterall - it's your book!! :)

HotMamaRama, I love looking at the examples that you have posted! It's always such fun to see what some of the other artists do with the books! I just completed my first ever moley late this fall, and getting your book back and spreading it all out is the greatest feeling! :) Even though you see the parts as it goes along, it's awesome to see it all at once! It's also really fun during the process to get the other books as they slowly fill up! You all have truly fun themes and it's going to be so fun to watch and lurk and see the art!

01-07-2012, 04:29 PM
I know exactly what you mean Kate - watching the progression is great, but nothing compares to having it all completed and in your hot little hands all spread out. I take mine out all the time to look at it and fondle lovingly. :wubclub: And I loved it when I would get other artists book as they were filling up - seeing the artwork as it unfolds ---so yummy!!!!

HotMamaRama
01-07-2012, 08:16 PM
Make sure you read the first page for the sending requirements.

Basically - when you're ready to mail your book - Make sure to use a padded envelope or small box with padding. I find that the 6" X 9" padded envelopes work great and are NOT too expensive to mail.
You'll also need to get a tracking number and then post the DC # in the thread. That way we can track where the book is at all times. One of the reasons I wanted to keep our group all based in the USA. You can't get a tracking # for International mail.
Lastly, let me/us know in the thread when you have mailed out so I can change your status to "in transit" or "completed".

Lovely, pixiepoo!!! I'm glad we are all posting our moley art, otherwise, who knows.....I might get lazy. Can't have that. Must do best work! I'm planning to use watercolors and ink - are any of you using those?

wildholly
01-12-2012, 01:21 PM
Your frames are so whimsical and fun Pixie....I llove the ideas and the way you drew them. Also what are you using for colors...ie what medium?

JR- I am going to use mostly pen and ink with a touch of some watercolor...I plan on using my distress inks to darken page edges and such.
I believe I read in another post somewhere to be careful with watercolor and saturation...someone who knows....let us know...if watercolor is not a good idea, I'll switch to something drier.

Beautiful, Jane - Is that watercolor?

I just inked and watercolored my first spread. Watercolor acts kind of weird on moley paper (I'm used to 140-lb. hotpress paper) but all in all, I like the effect. PLUS, I found it very easy to use colored pencil over the watercolor for emphasis. Sometimes the watercolor granulated a little - it looked almost like watercolor separating over greasy paper - and I had to wipe the paint around with a brush to smooth it out, a new sensation for me, but it turned out OK. I did see that you can't use a lot of water or it warps the paper, but I did do a sky with some water and no warping.
Anybody have tips on how they use watercolor?

JSilver
01-14-2012, 09:20 PM
Thanks Holly and Juanita.
No, Juanita, not watercolor although the background is a wash of acrylic paint. The rest is pen. I noticed, too, that this weight of paper can't take too much water. The surface piles up if you rub too much. The rest of mine will be done with acrylics and micropen. I finally tackled my 3 page spread and am happy so far.

I made the woven fabric/free-motion quilted piece a while back and didn't know what to do with it. I cut a piece to fit the moley and added the lace tie. Voila! It's light, so won't add to the mail weight. Going postal today.

Anywho, thanks for all the well wishes. I have two young girls and whenever they get sick it passes on to me. lol. I'm on the mend. I'm excited to mail mine out.

Here's my moley wrap - I'm not a good sewing maching operator (didn't want to call myself a sewer) either, so I made mine from a piece of felt and just whip-stitched up the sides and stuck on a felted flower I had under a pile of other stuff. FUN!

ABSOLUTELY GIGANTIC YES Please post pictures of the artwork in progress! Those sneak peaks are what make these so exciting and fun. You get to see bits and pieces as the year goes on, but its not until the end where the true AAAAWWWWWW moment comes.

Juanita Rojas

Trina, I looked online to find out more about graphitints, and the first set of images that came up when I googled - check out the blog of the person who drew the peregrine falcon. She did a colorfast test, and the graphitints failed horribly. I do know that every fabric, flag, pennant, etc. that I hang outside in the summer - the red always disappears real fast. So did the red of the graphitints. Sorry to be so longwinded, but I've had experience with fugitive media, and it really gets me *&(*&*(pretty irritated). Be careful!

Thanks for letting me know that about the graphitints Judy. I bought one to play with and its a green tint. From what I can tell they don't blend quite as well as straight graphite, but I love the idea of a touch of color blended with the graphite. Didn't know about their colorfast issues. What a bummer, but Better to find out now before I invest in a set. Thanks for saving me some $$$ and disappointment.

Everyone has been pretty quiet in here. Is it because we are all working ever so dillegantly on our layouts?! ;) :D

I've got mine all sketched out, but then I got distracted with grrrdjules fish swap and started making mixed media fishies! Then I did a couple of "therapeutic pages" in one of my art journals, which usually helps the psyche and mood. The way things have been with my daughter lately, I could fill a whole book. Wish I could work in the art journal everyday. Mostly cause I tend not to sweat how things turn out, because no one else will see it but me. And generally, it's some of my favorite stuff.

Do any of you do art journaling?

Juanita Rojas
02-09-2012, 11:26 AM
Working diligently!! I sketched the main layout, picked out the colors, now I'm inking away so carefully. My big fear is a big blop of ink right in the middle. I was reading 'Artist's Journal Workshop' and the author's solution to blobs of ink is to put a little something over it that relates to the page, like a menu, business card, travel folder piece, etc. Her results looked nice.
Do you have a teenage or pre-teen daughter? My daughter was lovely until age 10. Then she became lovely again at age 25. I am blocking out everything in between....Hope all is well with you and yours!

Juanita Rojas
02-09-2012, 05:14 PM
If there is a better way than inking with nibs, I'll jump on it, but so far through all my experimentation, the only medium that will hold up to having watercolor put over it - and I'm not talking really wet - is FW Acrylic ink and a dip pen! I feel like I'm still in the 19th century.....I've tried Microns and other various pens, but they all smear. Any ideas I can experiment with?

Debra - I'm with you. I do that too. Especially if I'm working on a piece that I care about or want it to turn out really well. Sometimes, I may not like how the work is turning out, but then walk away for a bit, come back, and realize it's not so bad. ha ha

It also helps me when I get frustrated with a piece. I can put it away for a few days or weeks, and when I come back to it, I know just what it needs. :) And sometimes, I just have to be in the right mood for certain things. If I'm working on something quirky but I'm NOT FEELING it, I struggle. Other times, I can whip it out.

Sorry for not checking in lately... Arrrrg life....

I have been having a blast with wildhollys moley! I will be finished with the drawing portion in an hour or so. I had originally planned to finish it out in color pencils but now that it is so close to done (drawing phase) I honestly think it would be better either with super minimal color or all gray tones with inking....

Hmmmm.... I don't want to just show the drawing part ***spoiler*** but I'd love your opinions.

What Di you guys recommend?

HolleyRae
02-18-2012, 07:48 PM

Here is my 3 page layout for Shay's Moley. I will be sending it off to HOTMama on Monday and will post conf#.
Hugs! Damnit! Don't look at the stone statues shadows or you can ignore the sunset. I did the statues before I came up with the sunset......dang! Just picture two really big snow monkeys hanging from trees blocking the light!!! LMAOOOOO!!!

OMG, all the "talk" and all the eye candy. I LOVE what you did Debba, especially the statue. Great art.
HolleyRae, I'm amazed and intimidated with your art on Holly's moley. I vote for minimal color.

I, too, have to be in the mood. I intimidate myself with an idea that pushes me out of my comfort zone. Then, I'm afraid to get started. What if I can't do it? What if I haven't thought it all out and realize too late of the mistakes? etc. This time, I did push myself but I'm happy with the outcome. Just a few more touches and I'll post. Remember, Monday is a post holiday.

This looks so 3-D it almost jumps off the page! I don't know if color would add or detract from that effect.......

Shay and Debba - did you use acrylics? The colors are so vibrant! I want to be in those gardens, it is so white and brown here......

Ok, so here is a snid-bit of the type of "minimal shading" that I was thinking would be better that full on color. I do want to have five times in color sprinkled in though. Whacha think.....? Yay...Nay?

Uuugggg - I've been aching to get Genxsters Moley done, but the kids seem to keep pulling me away. Boy wonder came home sick with a tummy ache, AGAIN. I swear if I could Lysol every child in his kindergarten class I totally would!! :D They are like petri dishes at this age!

Like just now. I thought I had inteligent children until this evening when I witnessed my boy pick up a kazoo he found in the park and instantly put it in his mouth and start blowing on it! :goofy::shocked::arghh: Seriously! What was he thinking????? At least he doesn't eat his boogers. LOL ! :twitcy:

Once, when I took my granddaughter to McDonald's, I looked down to see her LICKING the edge of the counter where I had just placed my order!!!! What are they thinking!?

Oh, yes, I received Fluffycat's moley today, Wildholly. It's so amazing.
Fluffycat, I love what you did with the bunnies and spring just busting out all over. And the back pocket with Ben's art is just precious.
I'm so awed, looking at this wonderful artwork up close.

Eeeeewwwwww! LOL

Anything can happen at this age too. When I was an art teacher at my daughters first school, I witnessed one of her kindergarten classmates sticking Cheetos up his nose. When I told him that was not appropriate lunch time behavior, he quickly yanked them out of his nose, and stuffed them in his MOUTH! So gross!

Sorry so quiet but I am literally HOME for eight days in the month of February! It's good craziness, as you can see by my Facebook postings. (Yes, definitely time for that. My mother would shoot me if I didn't update her on my happenings!)
Anyway, I finished my 3pg spread for Trina's moley and will mail it out first class today. WOW... I flipped through the thread and man, you guys are on FIRE! Talk about being intimidated!!
Trina, I wasn't sure how to handle the flow from your spread to mine and then the next. Hope you like it and that it works for you (and Melanie).
I used prismacolor markers and colored pencils.
PS. Finally shots of your moley as promised weeks ago!
Hugs and kisses all,
~Shay

Thanks for letting me know Shay. I've been trying to keep the prgoress on the first page updated, so if anyone sees a discrepency in accuracy please let me know. :)

@ Judy ~ There are a lot of layers of acrylic. Mostly because I didn't liked my first two attempts. ha
Then I finally decided I wanted to do something that reminded me of the movie "What Dreams May Come". If you saw the movie, there are scenes where the man is walking through one of his wifes paintings and the paint is real thick and buttery. It's just dreamy and creamy bold colors of paint as he walks through the garden. I used Acrylics with Golden Soft Gel (Gloss) gel medium to apply the paint thick and give it a sort of impressionistic garden feel.

Hope that makes sense.

painting, painting, painting... I'll finish eventually. Can't believe how long 3 panels is taking me. :err:I've even painted over some things. I have to say painting in someone else's book is very intimidating. I'll def be mailing this out on the 25th and not before.
