Whales, Orcas, and Dolphins - Hand drawn/Painted
________________________________________
Swap Due Date - March 7

Signup/withdraw date - February 21
Withdrawals after the withdraw date will receive neutral feedback.
Number of Cards - 3 for 3
Number of participants - 30 (my 3rd swap!)
Medium- Hand drawn/painted

For this swap you will create cards that feature dolphins, orcas, or whales. Hand drawn or painted only please. Please do your best work that you would be proud for someone to own.

If you have questions, just ask.

Details:
--cards must be standard ATC size, 2.5x3.5in
--include your username, real name, and location on the back of each card.
--hand drawn or painted only, please. Do your best work: Something you would be proud to give and to receive.
--US players: include a SASE with at least .45 cents in postage
--Internationals: Please send a self addressed envelope. I will cover the postage cost for all international traders. I collect postage stamps (new and postmarked) though so if you want to include a loose stamp from your country for my collection, that would be awesome.
--ALL PLAYERS write your user name on the back of your return envelope
--when your returns arrive, remember to leave iTrader for me and rep points for those whose cards you received. Part of the fun of the trade is finding out where in the world our cards ended up.
--if you need to drop the swap you must communicate with me. Withdrawals after the withdraw date will receive a neutral iTrader rating.

--When your cards are finished and ready to send, please PM me for address information.

--Host cards are not necessary but always treasured.

hi! i´m new here and i want to sign this trade :D

lemurkat

Okay, I would like to join. I should add a Kaikoura set to my New Zealand Naturally art cards, and this is a perfect excuse for drawing for it. I'm going to therefore do species that are found around New Zealand - the sperm whale, the killer whale, long finned pilot whale and maybe dusky dolphins. That's three dolphins and one whale, despite the names! But we'll see, maybe I'll draw a maui dolphin as well (it's a subspecies of Hector's) - one of the rarest sea dolphins in the world.

Kyo! Welcome! I'm honored to be your first swap here at ATCsForAll!!! I don't have any cards from Mexico either so I'm excited to see yours! If you have any questions or need any help with anything be sure to ask. We are a friendly bunch!

Lemurkat! Welcome! I love seeing all the different critters you come up with to illustrate! We have killer whales (more commonly called orcas here) in Washington too. :D

BryaAmirault
01-04-2012, 03:38 PM
do they need to be thick or thin format?

sasjhwa
01-04-2012, 03:53 PM
Paper should be thicker than typing paper. I use bristol paper for most of my cards. I use markers and they bleed through the paper and I want something to contain that a bit. I glue an information sheet on the back that has my name, username, swap name, card name, etc. which thickens it a bit. Some people use watercolor paper or cardstock or other papers. It is really up to you.

If you are using paint, be sure to use a paper that can handle the paint without wrinkling. It doesn't apply to this swap but if you join a mixed media swap use paper that is strong enough to hold whatever you are putting on it.

For my taste I like a card that I can hold in my hand that will not move if there is a breeze.

The site has a pretty good FAQ for new members. Also check out this post. (http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1366) It answers your question probably better than I did and lots of others as well, such as how to use the iTrader and You Rock! systems.

Have you started on your cards yet? How are they coming along. I'm not rushing you. I'm just curious about the process. :D Have you selected your animals yet?

I haven't started my cards yet but I've been practicing using markers and acrylic paints in different techniques to create water. My goal is that the 3 cards will be the best three I have ever made and I'm doing several drafts before hitting the final ones. Here's hoping!

I will be doing a humpback whale, an orca, and a dolphin, although I don't know which kind of dolphin yet. After I finish the other 2 cards I will likely do a big google search and hit the picture books at the library for inspiration.

sasjhwa
01-09-2012, 11:27 PM
I've received a couple of requests for addresses already. I know there are a lot of new people in the swap (which is awesome!). I want to remind you to look over the submission guidelines in the first post to make sure that you have everything included you are supposed to and that your cards meet the requirements of the swap before you mail them.

If you are able to scan your cards and post them please do. If you want me to scan them and send you a copy I'm happy to do that. Having a few cards in your gallery is sometimes a good incentive to do more cards. For me it is fun looking back to the cards I turned in back in 2008 and seeing how far I've come artistically.

sasjhwa
01-26-2012, 02:36 PM
Catsie! Welcome!

Lea67000, this is a great time to shake the rust off! I've been in your shoes several times and after sketching all over a couple of pieces of paper the old habits come back. I love that ATCs are a great opportunity to grow and stretch as an artist!

01-26-2012, 03:54 PM
I have found that this site has broadened my skill a great deal. I'm also finding that I am drawing more varied subjects than I did before. Every couple of months I collect the names of all the hand drawn/painted swaps currently open and pick one at random to participate in just to get me out of my comfort zone. Some of my favorite cards have been in those swaps. I'm nowhere near where I want to be artistically but this site has helped propel me forward on the journey and that makes it fantastic. :D

sasjhwa
01-28-2012, 02:16 AM
Jiliyan, your cards have found their way to my home! I was beginning to get worried but our letter carrier said quite a bit of mail from Canada has been delayed because of all the snow storms and power outages. Thank you for the extra!

sasjhwa
01-28-2012, 02:24 AM
I was browsing through my Facebook page today and noticed that Sea Shepherd has opened a gallery and educational center at their home base in Friday Harbor, Washington. It is only a few miles from my house and I'm going to have to plan a ferry trip this summer to visit it. They had a mural painted for the new place and I thought it might give some good inspiration as you are working on your cards.

sasjhwa
02-09-2012, 10:16 PM
I think it looks great in pencil. There is a lot that you can do with them you can't with markers. I use Prismacolor markers for almost everything I do. A good time to buy them here is when Michael's or Ben Franklin crafts has a 40% off coupon. I also try to buy a single marker a month from my local university bookstore if they have any new ones in stock. It increases the collection for less than the price of a coffee.

I received cards yesterday from Lea67000 and BryaAmirault.

Lea67000 thank you for the host card and the stamps. There were a few countries I don't have in my collection yet! :D

BryaAmirault thank you for the Qatar Riyal. I actually do collect money and have gotten my 6 year old son interested too. I have very little money from that part of the world so this was exciting.

Both of you submitted excellent cards. SO BEAUTIFUL! Thank you!

sasjhwa
02-12-2012, 03:56 PM

I would like to revise my earlier withdrawal. You see... I have started on my NZ Naturally Tarot cards in which each suit symbolises a particular habitat, and after drawing a sperm whale as the King of Waves (traditionally Cups) I figured, "why not do a full set". However, there's only going to be three, not four, since the Page of Waves is going to be either a fur seal or a penguin. Probably the former.

Instead of a Host gift, would you like me to send a selection of canceled NZ stamps?

And I guess this means I shall need an address. Also, how many "forever" stamps does it take to post a letter to New Zealand? I've got a collection of US postage here.

sasjhwa
02-17-2012, 01:26 PM
I'm always happy to have your gorgeous cards in my swap Lemurkat! I love the idea for your Tarot cards too. Are you going to print them?

First Class international postage for a 3 card set is $1.05US right now. A forever stamp is worth $0.45 so 2 would come in about right. I have a ton of stamps of various denominations to make up the difference. You don't need to feel obligated to do that though as I'm paying for all the foreign swaps this time around. I already have a couple of sheets of international postage. The NZ stamps are enough. :D I have a couple, but I have very few from your part of the world. :D

I'll PM you my address.

lemurkat
02-17-2012, 02:25 PM
I shall have a dig around in my loose stamp drawer, and if that doesn't yield anything, I shall visit our sole surviving stamp dealership (the rest are all in the "red zone" therefore probably just empty lots now). I have a number of stamps from obscure countries - eastern Europe, Egypt, etc, but I tend to hoard those ones.

As for the printing... Not sure - I can certainly print them myself (I have enough ink stockpiled to print several decks, I'd reckon) but I don't know about professionally - if I can find somewhere that will print tarot cards without too much issue, I certainly would - when they're finished, of course.

Dolphins deserve same rights as humans, say scientists. Some want a "Declaration of Rights for Cetaceans." What do you think? The article is pretty interesting.

Kyo, if your cards arrive I will let you know and we can discuss if you want them back or to add them to my Wild Animal swap (coming soon).

I left iTrader feedback for all the participants. If I missed you, please let me know.

Remember to leave iTraders for me and "You Rock!" for the traders when your cards arrive.

I'm glad to see some cards already making it to people. This has been a wonderful swap and I want to thank everyone for putting in so much hard work to make it special.

As promised, I'm now hosting a Wild Animal swap. Those who were not able to get their whale cards in on time may submit them to that swap if you want. I hope to see many of you join. The link to that and my Avengers Assemble! Swap are in my signature.
