Is anybody hosting a Valentine-a-thon?
I have been in the valley of oblivion for too long, seems like just what is needed,
a little art with a little love with lots of friends, maybe even a little art muse
will come visit.
Am I just too early/anxious, but I did not see anything on the calendar schedule
posted.

Sounds terrific to me if anyone wants to host one. (I might be able to co-host, depending on what it is.)

Sounds interesting. Can you describe more what you have planned? One day a-thon on February 14th? A weekend before it?

grammyquilter2
01-10-2012, 02:31 AM
lol, no plans! Didn't even realize what day February 14 was, till you mentioned. I do
think weekends are best for a-thons, so the weekend of Feb. 11/12 being right before
the 14th seems best idea to me. Something with atc's or chunky 4x4,
and using lots of layers (like painting, stamping, embossing, fibers, collaging, embellish,
or even tea bag folding, etc.) Old fashioned Valentines, love poems, something romantic. But actually
whatever somebody schedules is fine with me, from zentangles to watercolors
to found poetry, to ?

grammyquilter2

So happy to see the interest! Should have a fun time, and I am wondering if
anyone has suggestions for themes since we will have so many days?
Like maybe Glitzy'd Zentangles Lettering? I am thinking about maybe doing
a 4x4 chunky with each page a letter for L - O - V - E.
Remember, my muse ran away from home a while back so I need some ideas!

lol, glad you all like the idea. Actually I thought it was a bit early to think about
Valentine's except .... Yes,
It IS from Feb. 10th through Feb. 14th!!! so I figure this gives plenty of time to
prepare for a loooonnnnggg "a-thon"!
hmmm, I don't think we would like them so much if we had them too often.

Fair warning, I like the idea of color themes for a Red day and a Pink day.
what about a heart shape card, or using a transparency ?

big toe studio
01-16-2012, 02:43 AM
I like the idea of themes, too. it gives us a direction to start, at least

I had a lot of backgrounds prepared ahead for the last one, and that seemed to help me get started.

I have had trouble with transparencies and vellum, how do you get them to stick?

I dont think I could stand one every 2 weeks, after the last one I was positively "wore out"

grammyquilter2
01-16-2012, 02:00 PM
perhaps HHC could answer better than me, but the art shop I go to has some
transparencies from The Paper Cut (I believe) which claim to be better than what
I got elsewhere some years ago. The two main things I was told were to always
use the rough side for printing on ink jet printer and the smooth side for printing
on laser printer; and, some printers don't "see" the paper since it is clear transparency
so you have to fasten a "lining" piece of paper for the printer to detect something
opaque. Or else you buy the transparency from the art shop which has a white
strip along the feeding edge (as company above) and it makes the printer detect the paper to print.
As for adhesives, the scrapbook dept has special adhesive that says for vellum and it is
supposed to not show through the vellum. What I use is Scotch brand 2 sided tape to
stick transparency down making sure to put it in a printed place it won't show through
or in the border area and then cover with a matting also using the 2 sided tape. There
is a red-line 2 sided tape used for bookmaking that is supposed to be very good.

II have had trouble with transparencies and vellum, how do you get them to stick?

You have to experiment a bit which glue works for you. Glue sticks don't, but most spray glue work like a charm.

big toe studio
01-16-2012, 03:47 PM
thank you both, i will look into it. I think I might even have the red-line tape

Suze
01-17-2012, 11:13 AM
Hi...hey, Big Toe, I use transparencies from an online atc supply store (i don't have none printer
and after I cut them out I use a thin layer of Elmers glue  yup, good ole Elmer, and glue just around edges and I've always had good results...the glue dries clear and the transparency is firmly attached.

Are ATCs, chunkies, inches and all in between acceptable?

Jean
01-18-2012, 02:15 AM
HHC said she'd host a Valentine's ATART, so that means no restriction as to theme, medium, or type of art. Valentine themes/colors will probably be options for the days, but ATARTS are wide open, in my experience.

HHC
01-18-2012, 02:33 AM
So is this going to be all types of art, or just Valentine's theme?

It's any theme and any THING you wish to create. It just happens to be Valentines weekend. :D

Also want to note that grammyquilter2 had the idea for the a-thon, and I'm co-hosting with her. :)

grammyquilter2
01-19-2012, 02:25 AM
lol, happy so much interest here! Actually my first co-hosting, so I am peeking
from behind HHC mostly.
Whatever "art" is to you is fine with me! I am looking forward to new ideas, old
ideas, and inspiration from everyone.
I am just thinking of themes if anyone wants to do them. There is no declared
one subject matter only.
If anyone is into collecting some particular subject theme, colors, or media/techniques,
or sizes (atc, chunky, twinchie, inchie, bookmark, etc, etc, etc) Please let us know!
I would love to see water colour painting, collage, zentangles especially with hearts,
all manner of media drawing/art, some fabric sewn, and what about origami, photos
(somebody used to make kaleidoscope designs),
stamping, not just altered playing cards, etc. Oh, I am sure you guys have better
ideas than I do!!!

You can use a silicon based glue but only if you can glue behine an image so it doesn't show. The best way to attach them is using brads or eyelets.

grammyquilter2
01-25-2012, 04:54 PM
I had a huge box full of those paint chips, some with 5 shades, 3 shades or all one
shade, but didn't use them....now where did I put them? There were some pretty
colors collected and even some faux finishes, must find those.
I have lots of recipes in magazines, but nothing for a calorie-free Tart or sweet
desert to bake, so guess we will each have to "bake" up some sweets to send
for trades.
So far I am cutting 4x4, atc, and a few inchie/twinchie blanks from recycle
cereal/cracker boxes. If nothing else, I will have packets of blanks and fibers
to trade!
Does anyone know if there is an accepted standard size for "bookmarks"?

grammyquilter2
01-29-2012, 06:38 PM
Rogue Gal, I will see if we can change the name on this thread, but it will be changed
on official thread to be VAL-A-TART since it is Valentine's weekend-Valentine's Day
and a-thon of all types of art. I think a-thon is just a marathon of one thing (like
Valentines), so seems Tart is more appropriate than Thon.
lol, it had better be a "tart" because I still can't settle down to one idea yet.

ArtDuJunque, I want to know more about your bookmark book! Any pics you could
show us? Any explanation what you did, how you did it? I am totally intrigued

grammyquilter2
02-01-2012, 12:20 AM
The very gracious and talented HHC and myself will be co-hosting the VAL-A-TART.
I am very blessed to have Helen as mentoring me in my first experience of co-hosting.
(everyone stand up and give a cheer to HHC!)

SuzanneSky, it will work basically the same as previous "a-thons", except we will
be the longest one ever (I think) since we are going all the way 10-14th. You might
check through some threads of previous "a-thons" to see what rules they used.
The reason to post early is to give fair warning for procrastinators like myself to get
some backgrounds painted, or card sizes cut, or collage pics ready. The main idea
is to do most of your artwork during the "a-thon" and let us know what's going on.
Usually you post your art here to share with everyone, but do PM people individually
to make your trades.
This will be an all kinds of art a-thon, not just Valentine atc's. No limit to subject,
media, size, or quantity of how much artwork you get in during the a-thon.

everyone has been so generous in offers to assist me in trades! You are truly a wonderful generous group. It is so amazing to have so many caring individuals you have connections to that you have never met. Found out last night, that my husband is going to pick up a basement remodel in a week that will take him a couple of weeks. It's been talked about for a couple months, but now that he has the time, our friends son is ready to have him start. It will take him a few weeks and be enough to help cover for a few months. I may just get the urge to make a few and trade a couple now that I feel a bit more secure in how things are going. Just dropped off the tax info to the accountant so should be good there. Alternate years for my son as a deduction with his dad and 2011 is my year!! So should end up with decent refund. Have in the past on our years. Thanks you again everyone and hugs!!!

@alana - Everyone kinda beat me to it, but I was thinking that if things had remained the same, then an athon would be the perfect stress-relief for you. I'm glad that everything is working out in the immediate, so hope to see you next week.

NEXT WEEK?!?

ScrapPea, that is a nice article, glad you pointed us in the direction to follow.
Yes, LESS than a week! Friday is but a mere 5 days away. Hope others are
getting prepared better than I am. So far have cut blanks for 4x4, atc, and a
very few twinchie (never did one before) and inchie (ditto). Just need to work
on some blanks for bookmarks (come to think of it, haven't made any of those
before either).
Hope you all remember Variety is the Spice of Life.
Oooh, and the HUGE bag of fluffy fringy glitery yarn-fibers is just screaming to come out of the closet!

Craft room turns into a closet during the holidays and I have yet to dig it out so that is my project today - to at least make a start.

The girls are finally eating normal meals so I think we are all done with being sick. It's been a nice quiet weekend. Made a big crock full of chili-mac yesterday so we will feast on leftovers during the game tonight.

Can't wait! Between swaps and making cards for Portland, athons seem to be the only chance to add things to my available gallery.

o.o, I have been in oblivion too long... Who is Herman? surely not the very
good looking, charming, thoughtful husband jaw is rarely mentions?

And anyway, how can some people be so organized they are planning for art events
all the way to year 2102? HHC please tell us what your secret is.
Or is it just a test to see if anyone reads your signature line?

OH NOOOOOOO! Having internet connection problems which probably won't be fixed by the weekend. (I'm at work right now)......So I may need to play, scan and bring a thumb drive to work to upload all my creations! Maybe, maybe maybe it will magically fix itself while I am away from home today. WHY NOW, just before an athon?

I believe that is correct. If you make it to midnight on Thursday, you can start immediately.

I prolly won't make it to midnight, though. We're up at 0-dark thirty to catch a 6AM tour bus to the Northwest Flower and Garden (http://www.gardenshow.com/)show in Seattle.

Ahh HHC - I love garden tours and looking at their website I found this lovely piece of prose for one of the gardens. It would be wonderful in a valentines day card. I would love to be on the tour with you.

If I Write You a Song in the Garden Tonight

In the spring mist, under the bower, an anxious poet writes. Here, to this humbly elegant garden, he returns for solace and inspiration; this living orchestra ignites his soul to scribe into music and verse the longing for his love. Truly, he has nothing to offer but his heart, wholly … “We could dance on the clearing, I’d serve you some wine” he sings, as he imagines a table for two on the terrace. Amidst the dim lights and scented buds, he pursues … “If I say ‘I love you,’ out under the tree, could I bear to hear what you whisper to me?”
