View Full Version : SWAP: Fiber lovers swap (due April 28)
Katxena
03-24-2008, 03:25 PM
Swap Due Date - April 28, 2008
Signup/withdraw date - April 14, 2008
Returns mailed - May 3, 2008
Fiber pieces: 6 or 12 1-yard (0.9 meter) pieces
Number of participants - 20 maximum (10 international)
This swap is full. Thanks for your interest!
I feel like I never have the variety of fibers I want for my altered art projects -- if you are in the same boat, this is the swap for you.
Send in an envelope of 6 or 12 1-yard (0.9 meter) pieces of fiber, and get the same number of pieces back. Fibers should be nice quality ribbons and funky yarns (*no* fine threads like beading or embroidery threads) -- this is not an opportunity to get rid of junk. Please send in only things that you would be happy to receive yourself.
Please read the following guidelines carefully, paying special attention to the sections in red.
Labels: Please attach a label to one end of every piece of fiber you send. To make a label, cut a small piece of cardstock (1x1 inch would be big enough), punch a hole in it, and tie the end of the fiber through the hole. On the label, write your UserID. Every piece of fiber must be labeled to make sure I don't send your own pieces back to you!!!! Also, this will allow everyone to know who their fibers came from.
Multiples: You can choose 6 for 6 or 12 for 12. You can send more than one piece of the same fiber -- but you can send no more than 3 of one fiber. This means that if you are sending 6 pieces, you must send at least 2 different fibers. If you are sending 12, they must be of at least 4 different fibers. I will try to make all returns completely unique (that is 6 or 12 pieces with no repeats), but that will only be possible if everyone sends in a diverse selection of fibers.
Postage: Everyone must contribute postage for their own returns. Send a large, loose label with your address (a piece of plain paper is fine) -- do not send a return envelope. I really, really do NOT want it.
US participants, please enclose $3 in stamps or well concealed cash.
International, please enclose $3 in US dollars or US stamps OR send me $3.25 via paypal (kristie@papaya-palace.com) -- the extra 25-cents is to offset the paypal fee. If you use paypal, please make sure to put your UserID and the name of this swap in the memo field.
Wishlist for returns. You may also send me a wishlist for your returns, asking for certain colors or kinds of fibers. I suggest broad guidelines, like "earthy colors" or "spring colors" or "no metallics" or "reds please! duplicates of reds ok!" or "yarn-type fibers preferred". Please write your wishlist on a simple card (an ATC-sized piece of cardstock would be perfect), and make sure it has your UserID on it. Send your card with your fibers. I will do my best to accommodate your requests. Please be aware that some or all of your returns might not comply with your wishlist.
Allergy issues. Please make sure that your fibers are clean and do not smell of smoke or mothballs or pets or anything else -- and make sure they are free of substantial pet hairs. I will return all fibers that do not meet this requirement to the sender, at the sender's expense. I will not be able to control the content of the fibers in your returns, or the environment they come from. If you are worried that you might be allergic to your returns for one reason or another, this is probably not the swap for you.
A (p) after a participant's userID means they have sent their postage by some means.

Shipping multiple swaps: If you are in more than one swap I am hosting, you may combine your shipments to me in one envelope. However, I ask that you [I]please organize them for me and clearly label everything -- for example, you could put your chunky pages for one swap in one ziplock bag and your fibers for this swap in another, and then put both of those in one envelope for mailing. Please also make sure to include separate labels for each swap, and to send postage for each swap.

Oh, me for SURE! I am sitting on a gazillion skeins of yarn of all types, bought for a venture that didn't pan out. Count me in for 12 different! :D
Is it OK if I mail this together with my Chunky pages, or will that mess you up?
Katxena
03-24-2008, 05:33 PM
Welcome Asena! I decided to start this swap because I just used up the last of the amazing fibers you sent me several months ago!!!! :)
It's fine to mail them together, but it would help me a lot if you could put them in separate bags or envelopes inside one outer envelope.
I think we need at least 6 people to make this swap viable, so don't start cutting your fibers until I get a few more sign-ups.

I have a serious addiction to fibers and ribbons (and papers and paints and stamps and inks and ... sigh) Anyway, I would love to join your swap. You can count me in for 12 different also.

My favorite local art store is shutting it's retail location -- everything is 25% off! One of the reasons it's my favorite store is that they sell good quality ribbons for $1 a yard. You know where I'm headed after work today, right? :)
I'm distressed that the store is closing, but I'm hoping some retail therapy will take the edge off.

Kat - I'm heading out of town for the weekend but I'm stopping at the post office to mail my swap on the way.
Sorry to hear about your store closing. In this little town where I live we have lost our scrapbooking store, our quilting fabric shop, our family owned arts/craft store (that was here since forever) and our Joann's. All that's left is the (shutter) Walmart. We have to drive an hour to get anything. I do a lot of internet shopping - but there is nothing like hands on retail therapy.

So true so true! Nothing around here. But she fails to mention all the 'retail therapy' she's gonna get this weekend while out of town. ;) while i'm stuck at work.
Cant complain too much i guess cause she's got my kids with her. Hehe so while she's getting 'retail therapy' i'll be getting some 'quality time' with the supplies i already have. Lol
Speaking of supplies... Katxena, would you PM me your address so i can get my fibers in the mail to you, please? I forgot to get it from mom before she left. She had it from a previous swap. Thanks!

No problem, I'll send you a PM kynara!
I can't wait to see all the fiberlicious goodness. I have an idea for how to make a fiber organizer with my binditall. I'll give it a try this weekend and report back on how it goes.

Someone PM'ed me with a good idea about mailing. If you make your labels bigger (say ATC-sized or index card sized), you can use them as bobbins and wind your fibers around them. Then you can tape them to something (like the inside of an envelope or a piece of cardstock) to keep them in place and make them really flat for mailing.
I'll probably do something like that for the returns -- if you'd like to use a larger label and do the same to send to me, that would be helpful, and might even be cheaper for you to mail!

Whew! I went to a play last night and got home very late, so I haven't done anything for this swap. I plan to start getting things organized tomorrow though, since people are already mailing, I want to be ready to receive and track everything. Have a great weekend everyone!

I put mine in baggies and let the air out. That made them flat. ;) The fibers I sent are flexible enough to be able to be flattened though.
Mine are packaged up and going to the p.o. tomorrow. Hope you like em, and hope I didn't send any of the same that mom sent. She showed me the ones she was sending and by the time I got home to pick mine out, I'd forgotten what she had. lol!

:embarrassed: I went into Hancock Fabrics today after some puzzle ribbon... and ended up with more yarn. Some of the expensive Lion Brand yarns were clearanced at 50% off. I managed to restrain myself to 4 skeins, all different. I'll be passing some of those along.

April is Autism Awareness Month in the US (don't know about other countries), and the jigsaw puzzle ribbon is the symbol, like pink is for breast cancer.
http://www.ribbonribbonsandbows.com/store/image.php?productid=663
Thanks, asena... I've never seen that very appropriate symbol before. I don't do television so it sometimes takes me a while to catch up with new things.

Kynara - Hancock Fabrics stocks it, that's where I bought it yesterday. If you look for it online, Offray makes it, and the name is Jigsaw. It also comes in a multi-pink color combo.

Oh wow, this is fabulous. I've often looked at skeins of interesting fibers and yarns but I always pass because it's really too much quantity and there isn't anyone else I know in my area that does altered art so I can donate to or trade with (lots of scrapbooking, stamping/card making and quilting though - maybe all the Miami altered artists are incognito?) Anyway, I'd love to participate so if you could, please sign me up.:jiggy:
Katxena
04-02-2008, 01:25 PM
You are welcome to join us art4mysanity. Your hesitation to buy whole skeins of fibers is consistent with my own motivation for this swap. It's hard to get the variety of fibers that we would all like to have without buying a bigger house to store it all in! :)

May I join? And since I only have a small ruler may I ask the dumb question of how many inches there are to a yard? Thanks!
Kati
Asena
04-02-2008, 11:31 PM
36 inches to a yard, Kati! (12 inches to a foot, 3 feet in a yard.) ;) Most folks can get a good ballpark on a yard by measuring a length from nose to outstretched arm fingertips.
Hold one end of your yarn/ribbon/whatever to your nose. With your other hand, stretch out sideways with your arm level to the floor and turn your face away from that outstretched hand. I just did this with a measuring tape and got exactly 36 inches but only by lengthening the line by turning my face away. (Left hand out, face turned to right.) Does that make any sense? I tried to find a pic online to illustrate...
Just found this tidbit: "King Henry I in 1220 defined a yard measurement was from the tip of his nose to the tip of his outstretched fingers (how many used this method today to measure a yard)."

Katxena, mine are going out in today's mail - they are all fibers - I had a blast at the craft store yesterday buying whole skeins, something I'd resisted doing before. Now that I think about it, fibers are a good little "thank you" to enclose with a trade. I think people might like getting a few yards of varying fibers as a little thank you, perhaps?

As more and more packages come in for this swap, it's becoming obvious to me that I asked for far too much postage. I thought the packages would be bulkier and would cost more to mail. I've over estimated the postage by about $1 per package.
I'm very sorry for this -- it's never my intention to make money off of a swap!
I can handle this in a couple of ways. (1) I can refund $1 in postage by either sending back your cash or stamps, or issuing a pay pal refund, depending on how you sent your postage (and obviously, those of you who haven't sent yet would send me only $2.00). Or, (2) I can go shopping and send everyone an extra fiber bonus with their returns.
I'd prefer option 2 because it would be more fun for me -- and logistically easier. But I understand if people prefer to get their postage or cash back. I'll go with whatever most people want. Please post in the thread or PM me to let me know whatever you'd prefer.
I'm sorry!

I say more fibers! You can never have too many and I know how much fun it is to shop for them! But I will go along with whatever the majority wants so you don't have to try to remember who wanted what.
awmaw
04-07-2008, 09:54 PM

I prefer a one-size-fits-all solution. It seems like most people are ok with getting extra fibers, so that's the solution we'll go with. I will wait until closer to the deadline, and then I'll take all the postage and go shopping. I'll try to fill in gaps in people's wishlists!
I'll plan on sending extra pieces of fiber/ribbon to everyone -- as many pieces as I can possibly manage. If you have not yet sent you package in, please go ahead and send the originally requested amount for postage!
I'm so sorry for this mistake. I promise I won't repeat it in round 2 (y'all are up for a round 2, right?)

It just keeps getting better!! Round 2 - bring it on!!!
Went to CKC-St Louis this past weekend. Spent Friday at the convention, shopping and classes. Then on Saturday we went shopping. We went to one of the most amazing stores, Red Lead. I have shopped with them online (redleadpaperworks.com) but if you live anywhere close it is worth the trip to visit them in person. Very inspiring. Anyway, I have added to my fiber/ribbon stash quite considerably and would like very much the chance to share.

i'm excited about this . . . i collect more ribbons than yarns, so i look forward to having different fibers to play with for a change!

I'm all for more ribbons/fibers instead of postage refund. Woohoo! This is even better ... little extra surprise. I'm a ribbon fiend so when I went shopping for this, I bought all fibers and if it's not to much trouble, I like to get some different fibers back. (I forgot to state a preference when I mailed mine off.) Hey Katxena, please count me in if you do a round two.

I made up a little card with your preference art4mysanity! :)
I did some fiber shopping yesterday -- this wasn't for the "extra" it was for a personal trade I'm doing. I found the coolest two-tone ribbon. It's a light teal on one side, and an intense teal on the other. I'm sure it will make it's way into this swap somehow! :)
Mmmmm, teal. One of my favourite colours!
eepy (who wouldn't ever hint... no, no, not me)

I remember someone in another group sayng that their husband had bought for them at Tinsel Trading Co. Wish my husband would do something like that. (They do have a website and the prices on some things are not unreasonable at all!)

My family is used to me doing far stranger things. Trust me. :goofy:
I'm going shopping for the extra fibers for this swap on Sunday. I decided to wait until most of the returns were in, so that I had a sense from people's wish lists what they would like. I'll probably mail out the returns on May 3.
For those of you who are also in the Creative Life swap, I'm probably *not* going to combine your returns. I feel like that would lead to potential mistakes, so you'll be getting two envies back!
Katxena
04-22-2008, 11:06 AM
Oh, and I wanted to mention -- after everyone gets their returns, I'll be asking you for feedback about this swap. I'd like to do it again, but I want to find out how it worked for everyone. I'm probably going to put up an online survey about it, because I have several specific questions for you all.

04-22-2008, 01:08 PM
*salutes* question away cap'n! I'm awfully good at givin my opinion... especially when its not asked for. Lol!

Be warned -- I do survey research for a living! :) I'll try to contain myself to just a few questions though.

I probably won't mail them until Saturday. Swapping them out is taking some time -- I'm trying very hard to send everyone an assortment of completely different fibers (with no repeats) and I'm also trying to make sure I don't send you anything that's too similar to what you sent in.
You won't believe this, but I'm actually photographing each person's fibers and using the photo for reference when I select fibers to send back!

Would love to see all the fibers that were sent! Thanks again for hosting, Katxena - and I do hope you'll do it again!
Katxena
04-29-2008, 10:32 AM
I'd like to host this again, but I'm not sure when. I wouldn't be able to host for a while -- my fiber collection is not that extensive, and I'd end up sending repeats out to people, which doesn't seem fair.
If someone else wanted to host this again, that would be cool with me. I mentioned that I'm going to post a poll to get feedback about this swap -- I'll share that info with anyone who wants it.

Wow you go all out, thank you!
I would gladly host another one when I have the ability to host swaps, which will be in June I believe. But someone who can do it sooner should go for it, I would gladly participate!
Hi, I have just received my pack back in the post - stating I had address wrong, Could you forward me your address again, I was sure I had got it right - too late for this trade though, shame though, I was looking forward to getting some new threads etc>
:arghh:
SORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone!
People have been very generous in sending me extras. I think that rather than hold up the swap, I'll mail out all the returns, and when I get Ria's fibers, I'll swap hers with some of the extras and my stash.
US postal rates are going up soon, and I want to make sure to get these out before they do.
