View Full Version : Paint and Pens Abstract ATC Swap: due March 23

01-28-2012, 06:51 PM
Paint and Pens Abstract ATC Swap
Due Date- March 23
Number of cards-3/3 or 6/6
Number of players-unlimited

Media-LIMITED to paint, pens of any sort, ink, chalk and/or pastels.

Suggestions for ways to apply or use your paint:
stencils, object printing, spray paint in a bottle,
dripping, lines.

Just completed a short course on mixed media, presented by Traci Bautista, through Strathmore Papers.
I am intriqued on the ways you can combine paint and markers. Some of her suggestions which would be helpful for this swap are make sure your paint is dry before you add markers or pens. Use watercolor paper(doesn't matter what brand!) and just make random marks and play!
It would be easier to make a large piece and cut into ATC size cards.

General information-enclose all cards in sleeves.
Each card should be different.
Send your cards either in a holder, or taped side by side in a business-sized envelope.

US players-send along an addressed, business-sized envelope with postage attached.

International players-send along an address label and a dollar if you have one. Otherwise, don't worry---I will cover postage.

I do swap out on time. If you sign up and don't send cards, you might receive a neutral iTrader. However, if you need to withdraw, let me know and everything is fine.

Who is ready to play with their paints and pens and create some interesting abstract cards?

Hi Nancy L,
Sounds fun, please sign me up.

01-29-2012, 12:21 AM
I'm in please.

01-29-2012, 12:31 AM
Me! Love being random!

01-29-2012, 03:46 AM
Ink and watercolor is my favorite mix! Sign me up!

01-29-2012, 04:23 AM
I love using melted wax as background, would that be ok?

01-29-2012, 10:21 AM
Intriguing...lurking til I get caught up :)

01-29-2012, 12:35 PM
Mariloupatch, the challenge on this one is sticking to the mediums So, sorry, wax is NOT listed.
However, oil pastels act as a resist and they ARE listed. Remember you are already in the crazy zone for the fabric card swap, it won;t hurt you to try something a bit new here.

01-29-2012, 12:41 PM
If you decide to use some kind of stencils, broaden your horizon. Think of something that would give a good outline. I made some interesting stencils from a Xmas light holder....you know that plastic piece that keeps all the lights from tangling in their package. I have Xmas beads still attached to their cardboard. I have little sticks, kind of like long toothpicks that I place together. Cardboard from punching out game pieces for Carcassonne.
Besides using spray paint over these, I can use them as objects for printing, too. Both punchinella (sequin waste) and plastic mesh work well for painting on and then printing on you painted and dry paper.

01-29-2012, 12:42 PM
I can't show any kind of examples until the new computer arrives eventually.

01-29-2012, 12:46 PM
Please sign me up. Sounds like a challenge.

01-29-2012, 12:54 PM
Nancy I've combined markers with watercolor crayons...it produces a really rich color.

01-29-2012, 01:07 PM
Ok Nancy....I will try something different, within the range mentioned.

01-29-2012, 02:21 PM
Its also fun to play with gels and different mediums and additives with different paints.

01-30-2012, 05:18 AM
Sounds good sign me up.

01-30-2012, 10:13 AM
Ooh can I play too please? :D

01-30-2012, 11:43 AM
Those should be ok I think..? Acrylic paint and inks.

If I missed something please let me know:confused:

01-30-2012, 12:31 PM
I took the same course. I can hear Traci's voice when I read your words "random marks and play". :) She certainly loves those words. I attempted the technique she taught for cards on another swap I'm in, but the results I had looked dumb to me, me being my worst critic and all I suppose. I'll try again though. Put me as a lurker for now...I'm moving soon so I'm not sure what my address will be in March. I'll be back though. :)

01-30-2012, 01:18 PM
Hope to see you back. I made several pieces...I liked the acrylic ones more than the watercolor and writing ones. I was disappointed that Traci didn't really show us HOW to draw the faces.
I cut my pieces into samller pieces for cards. I kind of like the busyness of the pieces...but it is different than anything else I've done.

01-30-2012, 02:01 PM
those look great mariloupatch!!!
can''t wait to start mine :D

01-30-2012, 02:05 PM
This sounds like fun! May I join?

01-30-2012, 02:53 PM
Thanks pixiecorpse, here are some more

01-30-2012, 03:16 PM
ooh wow! they are fantastic!!!!
thinking these might be a little boring in comparison :D
I might include one but still have time to play with lots of ideas :D

01-30-2012, 06:15 PM
I think they will all be different. I might show off what I make as the new computer is coming home later today! I don't have cards finished yet.

01-30-2012, 06:43 PM
Its very exciting! its hard to decide whether to do a big one then cut it or just confine them to size to begin with.
Can I be added to the list please, I think you might have missed me asking before being distracted by marilouspatchs fantastic abstracts!
And rebecca410 wants to play too :D

01-30-2012, 09:13 PM
question--- are markers such as copic, sharpie etc included????

01-31-2012, 03:36 AM
Thank you all," blushing":D.
I painted a large sheet with acrylic paint first, then dropped ink (red) and blew
it in directions, added some black and then added "pens" sharpies. I hope
sharpies are seen as pens. Abstracts are really my favourites, thank you Nancy for those fantastic swaps!

01-31-2012, 08:26 AM
They are fantastic! You should be proud of your work its amazing. I was thinking about watercolour and straws for blowing.
I think markers would be fine they are pens after all :D

01-31-2012, 10:56 AM
Pixie I love your pixie-lated cards! They're cool in a geeky sort of way and considering one of my bumperstickera is a bright pink hello kitty that says "I <3 Geeks" I just love them!

01-31-2012, 12:50 PM
Thanks artdujunque! They'd been half done for AGES!! They're based on nudes I'd done previously. And far too much preparation time :D

01-31-2012, 03:32 PM
If it comes in stick form and comes out the end, I see it as a pen.

Our desk computer broke---right in the middle of a game it just stopped. took it for repair and diescovered cheaper to buy a new computer. did that, brought it home and it doesn't work! so it is off to the shop again and I dream of it all coming together and being as before, just better.

01-31-2012, 03:34 PM
So yes, I could be distracted.
Pixiecorpse, I'll add you. Did Rebecca post in the thread?

01-31-2012, 03:36 PM
Oh no nancy! That sounds like a royal pain in the booty! Hope it all works out ok :D

02-01-2012, 04:45 AM
Cards will be in the mail tomorrow!

02-01-2012, 09:51 AM
Yes nancy she did, sorry I missed you asking hehe, she posted above me that's how I noticed!
Going to get my abstracts on tonight! So their dry for the weekend :D

02-01-2012, 11:51 AM
Here's some but I think I may try for 6.

02-01-2012, 12:10 PM
Wow! They are beautiful! Going to get mine done before the weekend :D

02-01-2012, 03:17 PM
My computer story iss becoming a saga! The new computer came home. Husband works on reconnecting everything. supposedly all was saved and transfered to the new from the old. He can't get msn on the new computer. We watch a movie on tv. He tries the computer again and it has died in the meanwhile.
Yesterdayhe returns it to the shop. Of course, the guy that worked on it before is home sick. It was determined by the owner that the motherboard was defective. But my husband is wondering if our 8 yr old monitor could be killing off the computer. So he has taken that into town to be checked.

02-02-2012, 12:03 PM
Cmputer comes home and everything is conmnected and it all works! Hurray!!!

But that was yesterday. today it won't come on. So after my husband has his photo taken for his passport renewal, we'll return to the computer shop with our tower. I know we're not happy about going in and I know they don't want to see us. And I have to keep reassuring my husband that this is NOT our fault.

02-02-2012, 01:22 PM
Nope your right nancy its not your fault and what a flipping mess around, its a shame you can't bill them for your travel costs back and forth!
You'd think they'd test it first before letting you take it home!
Hope you get one soon that works :D

02-02-2012, 03:48 PM
Love the texture and colors, Jewels!

02-02-2012, 06:14 PM
My cards are done and later when my husband is communicating, we can figure out how to find the tools to make my cards appear in my gallery.
Dropped off the computer this am and on the second visit to the shop, we brought it home. this time it was some power thing and the power not getting to the computer.
We are really hoping that the computer can stay home.

02-02-2012, 10:04 PM
less is more...

02-03-2012, 12:30 AM
could i sign up????

02-03-2012, 12:33 PM
I like it, Artkitty!
I think all the returns will be fabulous!

02-04-2012, 01:48 AM
I made 4 cards for this swap. why? I don't know. I'm used to making 4 for a 3/3 swap. Maybe I'll keep one.
Anyway they are posted in my gallery.
My computer has a new and different program for scanning. I will learn it eventually.

02-04-2012, 06:23 AM
Please count me in

02-04-2012, 12:41 PM
Lafaver55, I feel honored having you in my swap as now I read that you have less time to play. Congratulations on being employed again!

CAMeo Cheryl
02-04-2012, 08:33 PM
I have signed up for these workshops and have watched 3 of the 4 from Traci... and would love to do this swap!

02-05-2012, 07:44 AM
Lurking but I like it...

02-05-2012, 12:39 PM
This is fun stuff. You just layer paint and markers and pastels. Make a big piece on watercolor paper. then hunt for the ATCs that are hidden. Cut them out. Back if you wish and you are done. You can seal if you wish. And the returns will be fabulous!

02-06-2012, 02:45 AM
Lurking.....doggone it, lol.

02-06-2012, 11:35 AM
I would be so honored to have you play, Jean. These cards aren't really work, but an opportunity to play with paint and pens. Isn't there always time to play? If not, there should be!

02-06-2012, 06:18 PM
Oh Computer wars are the worst!!! We have become so dependent on them. Couldn't have this wonderful past-time with out them. I just got turned on to color wash sprays and perfect pearls mist (I'm a very newbe to art and ATC's) I'm having too much fun playing with them!!! I will be sending mine very soon. Thanks for the timely swap.

02-06-2012, 07:54 PM
Suezq, I'm guessing tha tyou are signing up.

In some ways its a blessing NOT to have the talent of drawing. Its gives you so much freedome to play with materials.
Do you need a mailign addredd? I have it. PM me when/if you need it.

02-06-2012, 07:55 PM
Sometimes I htink it would be a great game in a puzzle magazine...to figure out computer error. Mailing address.

02-07-2012, 11:00 PM
What fun!!! I played and stayed up too late but hey it was for a good cause

I am such a newbe that - I wanted to show you my cards in the thread but I got this error: "You are only allowed to post URLs to other sites after you have made 15 posts or more."
So.... you have to go to my gallery to see them until I get my 15 posts, which won't be long now that I have so many trades I want to do. Then I will post them in the thread too.

02-07-2012, 11:06 PM
Honored! LOL Hon, ask anyone, I'm a lot more trouble than I'm worth! LOL ;)

Anyway, I did four backgrounds...started adding 'marks' but my 'marks' are UGLY so will try to fix it tomorrow. That's the nice thing about acrylic - you can paint over your mistakes! lol

02-08-2012, 09:17 AM
Mine went postal today! I'll upload the pictures later for you all to see :D

02-08-2012, 11:44 AM
I'm so tempted to sign up. But I don't want to overload myself. Shall have to think about this.

02-08-2012, 12:55 PM
Avarenity I can't seem to get anything done unless I overload myself! I find its easier to find inspiration if I've 3 or more swaps to be going on with, and it means I don't have to stop during drying time I can just work on other cards hehe :D

02-08-2012, 03:31 PM
I've posted my cards in the gallery :D

02-08-2012, 03:48 PM
Ok, may I say these cards are eating my lunch??? I know you said play...and I'm trying! Things that are supposed to be low stress, fun things are often tough for me. I'm not giving up, just whining. lol I'll try again...

I watched some tutorials on mixed media, and they use all kinds of things as stencils - bubble wrap, bottle tops, etc. So I figured cool, I can do that. All I could find was a paper clip, so I bent it into a zigzag and dipped it into paint. Well, I bent it in such a way that my zigzag was curved so it looked like random blobs of paint. Back to the drawing (or flattening!) board! lol

02-09-2012, 12:45 AM
I took the MM online class recently offered by Traci Bautista, through Strathmore Papers. She suggested making several layers of pens and paint. she is also big on doing marks at random. Don't overthink it. Tho I guess that is easier for some than others.
I'm also still excited about printing with or making stencils from stuff that is otherwise just sitting around. Punchinella works well, as does a small piece of netting. Or that plastic mesh (that I used to give to preschoolers for sewing with yarn.)
I found beads on sale after Christmas and I left them on their card. I arrange those and then spray paint (my liquid watercolors from my preschool supply catalog.) Or Traci suggested watering down acrylics to spray. I've also begun using acrylic inks, especially for dripping.
Pencil grips make some fun patterns and the ends make nice little circles. A couple of layers of stneciled or printed things and then I outline with any kind of markers. Wite out pens work better for me than any white art pen I've found.

02-09-2012, 12:47 AM
If I want a color to pop out, I rub in oil pastels. I usually use a paper twel as I will already have other stuff on my fingers by that stage.
Jean, even if you don't sign up but enjoy playing with materials, I am happy. I guess you have to work on the enjoying part.

02-09-2012, 12:48 AM
Mariloupatch, your cards arrived. Thanks for the dollar and the extra card!

02-09-2012, 12:54 AM
Oh, Nancy...I did the workshop too, though w/o sprays (allergies). LOLOL I am NOT giving up. *rolling up sleeve* I WILL play! LOLOL I can play well with words, but when it comes to art, sometimes I get...stuck. I have one card I like, so I'm getting there!

02-09-2012, 07:52 AM
I agree with nancy its all about trying not to over think, as you can probably tell from my abstracts hehe :D

02-09-2012, 03:41 PM
I'm working on my fish for the Malicious Fish swap and discovered that you can get cool patterns by stamping alcohol inks over netting. the inks do look better on glossy paper but still are okay on gessoed, acryylic cardboard.
Maybe that will be another technique swap down the road...stamping thought netting.

02-09-2012, 03:58 PM
My cards went postal today. Here's the last two.

02-09-2012, 04:04 PM
Those are great - they're all fab!

I painted over the unhappy cards and am already happier about what I've got! :jiggy: And I did find some bubble wrap and am getting some ideas.... Slow starter.

02-09-2012, 04:06 PM
Ooh they're lovely jewels!
That sounds like a good idea nancy, I have some netting and can't for the life of me figure a way to stick it onto collages so using it as a stamp sounds like a better idea to me :D

02-09-2012, 06:58 PM
Gel medium will stick almost anything to anywhere.

02-09-2012, 09:48 PM
trying a different approach.

02-10-2012, 01:42 AM

02-10-2012, 08:29 PM
Here are four from me. Hope they're ok!

02-10-2012, 09:09 PM
They're alright by me....did you want to join this swap Jean? In my paper record, I have you but with a question mark.

02-11-2012, 01:17 AM
Wow cool card artkitty!

And jean those are fantastic! I'd love to get any of those in my returns :D

02-11-2012, 01:27 PM
I've been busy with paint and a pen. May I please play?

02-11-2012, 04:52 PM
BEtween tearing paper and painting and penning, you must have been busy!

02-11-2012, 10:48 PM
If they're ok, Nancy, I'd love to join the swap. I just wanted to make sure before I committed. I worry about these things, lol.

02-12-2012, 06:06 AM
I'd be happy to take them all jean but I'm sure so would everyone else they are fantastic!

02-12-2012, 02:28 PM
In the mail today. Thanks for the fun swap.

02-12-2012, 05:53 PM

02-17-2012, 12:26 PM
I've done both sides of watercolor paper with paint and pens and stencils and then cut them into smaller pieces for greeting cards. My valentines to friends were a bit hit and I used this technique.

02-17-2012, 11:52 PM
Computer is being cranky again!!!!!! so may be online less...will try for once daily.

02-18-2012, 05:46 PM
ArtKitty, your cards are here. thanks for the extra card!

Sainteve, your cards arrived. Adventurer, your cards also came today. Thanks so much for the host and vintage postcard!

02-27-2012, 01:00 AM
If you got excited about making your cards for this swap, you might check out Jar of Stars. You make stars no bigger than 5 x5 inches, and can use any media. I made mine on watercolor paper and am doing them with paint and pens! You keep your returned stars in a jar of your choice, or you can hang them up. whatever.

02-27-2012, 02:11 AM
I can't believe i didn't see this earlier. May I please play. I'll try really hard to get them done, but will let you know for sure if I can't.

02-27-2012, 12:06 PM
RoOskie, added you. #24 withdrew so I put you there.

I have 3 of my 4 done! I'll post tonight! :)

02-29-2012, 06:16 PM
Ditto artyd, those are beautiful. I am trying to figure out what you used for stencils and patterns on the first coat. Very nice.

02-29-2012, 06:19 PM
Jean mentioned in a note that I must be experiencing balmy breezes in my Hawaiian winter. I wish. I think balmy took a break. We are having a grey, rainy day, maybe like you are having in Canada, Jean. But then again, I am in shorts and you probably aren't. But, you can warm your house with heat. I can warm myself with closing windows, doors and putting on more clothes. Our cold is usually between 60 and 70 degrees F. 80 for us, now, is most comfortable.

02-29-2012, 08:30 PM
Alrighty, here they are. Do they work for this swap?

02-29-2012, 08:35 PM
Cool rooskie! Me likey!

Wow great cards bitsysal!!!!

03-07-2012, 01:31 PM
Just a reminder....if your cards use paint, pens, pastels, ink (but not rubber stamps), your cards are good.
I cannot always see the details for cards posted in the thread. I admit I have poor eyesight.
If I receive your cards and don't feel that they fit the criteria, I will send them back.

03-08-2012, 09:08 PM

Hi Nancy,

I would love to join this swap.

I did the fabulous Traci Bautista Strathmore class. She did such an awesome job. Here are some that I did. The colors are more vibrant than they appear.

If these are ok please forward your addy and I will send them pronto.

Thank you,

03-12-2012, 12:43 PM
Great to see someone else's work that is influenced by that work shop. I will add you to the swap and PM you with my address.

03-12-2012, 01:22 PM
LOVE your cards slrandom! ESPECIALLY...the 1st one!

03-12-2012, 04:45 PM

BitsySal, your cards arrived. thanks for the host card.

03-12-2012, 07:27 PM
Willowh, you can sign up. However, the cards are due in less than 2 weeks. I do NOT wait for late cards. I do swap out on the Sunday or Monday following the due date. If you sign up and something happens, like life, or loss of muse and you do not withdraw, you risk receiving a neutral iTrader.

03-12-2012, 07:43 PM
RoOskie, your cards arrived. Thanks for the host card. Clever to use the sticky dots to keep your cards from dancing.

03-13-2012, 09:56 PM

My cards were sent today, Tuesday, March 13. Can't wait for the return cards. There are so many great ones!

03-13-2012, 11:07 PM
Sheri, your cards are beautiful, I like the idea of using tones of one basic color, very nice. I have started mine, should be mailed by Friday.

03-14-2012, 09:25 PM
Snickleme, your cards arrived.

03-14-2012, 09:28 PM

03-15-2012, 09:04 PM
Aschaum, your cards arrived.

03-15-2012, 09:29 PM
I think I have only 3 or 4 days left of pain pills. I am hoping that the pain will be less naturally. I kind of have doubts about this. But it could happen. The more pain I have, the grumpier I am. Good thing I am usually around just one person.
So I am particularly happy with the players who put my address in the return address corner on their return envelopes....the ones who put a large readible address on their return envelopes...the ones that meet all the criteria for the swap... the ones whose cards will arrive on or before the due date.
Unfortunately, being hurt or ill, does not make me sloppy in hosting, just grumpy. And I hope/wish that all of you never have a broken rib!

03-16-2012, 09:54 AM
Here they go, posted them today.

03-16-2012, 07:18 PM
Slrandom, your cards arrived.

03-18-2012, 12:18 PM
Hi Nancy,

A broken rib. Yikes!!!! I know how that hurts as my hubby had one. Takes a while to heal. Then a couple years ago I broke my left (dominant side) leg AND arm. It was an amazing adventure in sitting/sleeping in a chair for 4 months. I have never sat around before and had the most wonderful time rediscovering my ambidextrous nature. Did ATCs with my right hand and found some new techniques.
Sorry if I did some of the things wrong for the swap. Guess I have some habits that need attention.

Feel better,

03-18-2012, 12:35 PM
They are great Jan!
Nancy you might want to try to take less pills like if it says 2 every 4 hours try to go 5 or 6 hours then they'll last longer :D
It works in theory...
I had a lot of trouble with baby no 3 and abcesses under a broken tooth, think I had 4 all together but dentist wouldn't take it out she didn't want me going into labour hehe

03-18-2012, 01:24 PM
I haven't taken a pill since 9:40 last night. Curious to see how much pain I have without the pills. Also if I can go without for two or 3 days, i could ahve a glass of wine. I think my back is ready for my daily ibroprufen.
I'll see how it goes. My husband thinks I should have pills for church. Doesn't he think holiness will keep away the grumpiness?

03-20-2012, 12:53 AM
Haven't gone to the po box since last Friday. Didn't make it to church as husband had vision problems. Today he couldn't get up without being dizzy.
So hoping his health is done being ditzy and he can get to the post office tomorrow.

03-20-2012, 03:38 AM
Wow! Well done with no pain pills!!! I hope both you and your husband are feeling better today :D

03-20-2012, 04:36 PM
Jan, your cards arrived. Thanks for the hsot card.

I'm still tired a lot. I still take a lot of rests and naps. My husband is feeling much better today. Went and got the mail. So much was stuffed into our Po box.

03-20-2012, 09:35 PM
CAMeoCheryl, your cards arrived.

03-21-2012, 03:58 PM
Went through all the envelopes I have and pulled out host cards (so fun!). Put in a strip of 3 pockets for each envelope that didn't come with some sort of holder. If you had a lightweight paper-holder, you will see it again.
Still 6 envelopes to come, Hoping they arrive on time. It will be a fun set to swap out. the returns are beautiful!

03-23-2012, 12:06 AM
Pwnderosa, your cards arrived. Thanks for the extra.
And Willowh, your cards also arrived. Thanks for the three extra cards!

03-23-2012, 12:18 AM
We are hosting our model train club meeting on Saturday. My plan is to swap out on Sunday afternoon. Returns for US players will go out Monday. International returns will go out later. I might be able to send some out with stamps I have on hand. Otherwise, they will go out 1st or 2nd of April.

03-23-2012, 05:58 AM
ooh i cant wait for the returns! Glad your husband is feeling better, and swapping should ease the pain :D

03-23-2012, 07:23 PM
Picked up mail this am, but nothing arrived for this. I will pick up whatever is in the box on Sunday and then swap out.

Might keep whatever comes afterwards and swap late ones together. Maybe they will all be in the box on Sunday. You just never know!

03-23-2012, 07:28 PM
Fingers crossed they arrive! I know how it feels I'm hoping mine for another swap reaches its destination tomorrow, its been 2 weeks already o_O
Looking forward to my returns :D my postie should be very busy next week hehe!

03-25-2012, 09:04 PM
Swapped out what I had.....the returns are great! My husband is willing to stand in line tomorrow, so all the cards are going out!

If others show up, I'll keep until Friday and swap out with any other late ones. Otherwise late cards will be returned.

03-26-2012, 02:48 AM
God bless your husband! And woop! Pretty things in the mail!!! :D

03-29-2012, 03:02 AM

03-29-2012, 09:41 PM

03-31-2012, 12:42 AM
I did enjoy this swap....there were a few little snags...but overall, the returns were fantastic.
I think I'm not hosting again until June or July. I have some personal art to work on and I have to invent the backs of my signature cards for Art For All.
I'm swapping watercolor paper backs to someone for something....got the paper today and cut it up,,,,AND made 10 new pages of Paint and Pen technique. I really like doing stencils and spray painting over, filling in white spaces with paint and pastels.....and penning here and there and sealing the whole shebang with medium.

03-31-2012, 07:23 PM
