--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Swap Title: Underwater Steampunk
Swap Due Date: Cards in my hands by April 30, 2012
Withdraw date: none – but please communicate if you are going to drop out
Number of Cards: 3 for 3
Number of participants: 40

Underwater Steampunk

I was browsing the interwebs recently and stumbled across the most fantastic stuffed critter pattern. It was a steampunk octopus! Of course my immediate response was “I must have this” which was quickly followed by the realization that I would never get it made and it would just sit there mocking me, so I had another brilliant idea… this should be the theme of an ATC swap! But then, who wants to make just a bunch of cards of octopi with monocles and top hats when you can expand that idea into all the creatures of the deep. This swap is all about creating underwater scenes and characters with a steampunk flair. Think mechanical jellyfish and sharks in Victorian attire. Let your creative imaginations run wild and be sure to do your very best work as I will be swapping quality for quality.
This is a swap for any medium but I stress DO YOUR BEST WORK WHATEVER MEDIUM YOU CHOSE.

Rules of the sea
- All cards should be the standard size: 2.5” x 3.5”.
- All cards should be sent in plastic sleeves.
- All cards must be original, and each card must be different. Please do not make copies or submit prints.
- Show off your talents. Send cards that took time and care and are your best work.
- Please don’t use hard, bulky embellishments.
- stickers may be used as a part of your design, but should not be the main element.

Mailing & Postage
- When you're ready to mail, please PM me for my address.
- Make sure your name, user name and location appear on the backs of all ATCs.
- US Participants, include a SASE, business size, with enough postage to cover the mailing of your cards.
- I will cover postage for international participants but please include a LARGE address label with your cards.

Returns
- When you receive your returns, please leave iTrader for me and rep points (you rock) for the artists who made the cards you receive.

Most importantly, have fun!

This is 100% new to me... Can someone recommend a good resource on steam punk. I want to make sure I do it right.

There are tons of steampunk sites on the web. I like to think of steampunk as a sort of cross between victorian and science fiction.

Ohh PS...Is a steampunk underwater diver (human-ish) OK?

A human-ish steampunk diver would be excellent. 20000 Leagues under the Sea style divers immediately spring to mind for me.

Russell
02-17-2012, 10:19 AM
Welcome SarahRuth - always good to see another Indiana member around. What part of Indiana are you in?

Russell
02-17-2012, 10:37 AM
Home of Holiday World!

lol...look for all the corn Russell. I'm in there somewhere. ( actually, I am a couple hours from you, down in Jasper )

Pretty much everywhere I look there is corn. Even here in Indy I can drive ten minutes and find corn fields.

ArtDuJunque
02-17-2012, 10:46 PM
Actually you wouldn't believe the number of people who come here to gawk at the amish. I don't see what is so fascinating about people in buggies and dresses.

Russell
02-17-2012, 10:48 PM
Actually, I live just outside of downtown Indianapolis. I can see the tall buildings from my house, but just three blocks to the west there is a sheep farm and just a short distance south there are corn fields. We do get a lot of tourists here though, and most recently.we hosted the superbowl so there were lots of tourists around.

Just glad I bought my gazillion watch parts long time ago. They are expensive on e-bay now that they are listed as "steampunk" bits! Now to figure out a way to keep them from rusting in the deep sea water...hmmmmmm:err:

One of my favorite cozy mystery authors (Tamar Myers) has a character who owns a high priced inn in Amish country. She offers the Amish Lifestyle Plan Option (ALPO), to her hoity guests--for a significant extra fee they can make their own beds, set the table, wash dishes, and clean barn stalls. LOL.

minnkel
02-19-2012, 01:08 PM
OK...read the whole no bulky embellishments thing. Do you consider real watch parts (gears, watch hands, etc.) as bullky???

Russell
02-19-2012, 03:26 PM
Great cards Mike. Love the mermaid.

Minnkel, actual watch parts are light enough that I would not consider them bulky. Just be careful that no prong etc come through the envelope.

KentuckyDakota's cards showed up yesterday afternoon. They are stunning. The backgrounds are beautiful and so water-like not to mention the focal points of the cards which are too cool to even describe. Great work being submitted so far. I think the returns on this swap are going to be wonderful!

I got my steampunkery book today!!!! It is a polymer clay book on the steampunk theme (by Christie Friesen) but the images and ideas are AMAZING! a whole section on underwater stuff! I am so inspired to play in clay I could just squeal!!! I think I will!!
I also have a bid out on ebay for a whole batch of old watch parts to play with! blah blah blah, I know!

Any medium is correct. If you like to do collage, do it! If you like to draw and paint, that's great too. If you want to do some digital layering, I'm okay with that. Feel free to explore your creativuty and maybe combine mediums as well - maybe some collaged parts along wiht some hand drawn. this is a completely open medium swap. Have fun with it.

I'm having a hard time drawing steampunk. Is it okay to ask for some tips in this thread? How do you guys get inspired to draw steampunk? Are there rules I'm not aware of? :embarrassed:

I tried making a steampunk squid, and I got stuck with the line art. I'm afraid to put color in because I'm not sure what color schemes work best. @_@

Your line art is fab. Think metals! Rusty, bronze, stainless steel, brass. Think cogs, wheels, watches, clockwork, rivets, screws, wires. Think Victorian or Old west or interesting backgrounds (maps, compasses, watch parts). Layers are good too.

Good advice Deb. A lot of times I see living things mixed with robotic parts or such as well. Cyborgish- Is that a word? :) And I've seen movies like 20,000 leagues under the sea or City of Ember or Hugo that had a real steampunk feel. Just looking at images from those kind of movies really helps. Mixing up vehicles- sailing ships that fly with balloons and blimps with smoke stacks and propellers- always cool. And doing a google search of Steampunk Animals gives you pages of the coolest metal creatures you've ever seen! My favorite color tones are sepias and rusts

I found a stamp of small gears at the stamp show that was here in early March. I believe it was from 100 proof press. I bought it specifically for my underwater steampunk cards.

I just found 100 proof press at the stamp show in Cincinnati last August, but I immediately fell in love with their images. Then when they showed up at the stamp show here in Indianapolis this month (it was on my birthday) I treated myself to far more of thier stamps than I probably should have.
