View Full Version : NATIONAL BIRDS: A HandDrawn/Hand Painted ATC Swap due May 25th

03-20-2012, 09:39 PM
Mailing Date for US Players: May 21st
Mailing Date for International Players: May 11h
Number of Cards – 3:3
Number of Participants: 20
Media: Hand drawn/hand painted - realistic, cartoony, stylized, whatever!

This is my second swap, so I have a limited number that can participate.

This is a swap about the beautiful birds that represent different countries. You can portray the bird of your country of origin, of where you live right now or have visited, of the country of origin of one of your relatives, or even just a country you choose for no particular reason. Please, just countries. I may follow up with a swap for state/province/regional birds later, depending how this goes!

If your country does not have a particular bird associated with it as an official "national bird", than any typical or native bird will work too!

To sign up for this swap:
1) Please post to this thread
2) State which country’s bird you’ll be illustrating
3) The name of the bird
4) Why you chose that bird
5) Take a look at the sign-up list before you post; it would be nice to limit any one bird to 3 players or less.

Make 3 cards of the same bird, but make each card at least slightly different. Please put time and effort into your cards. Imagine that you are swapping the card to someone in person; make it a card you’re proud to give!

I will cover postage for all international players. If you have a US dollar to send, it would be great, but not at all necessary. I live in the Pacific Northwest area of the U.S., so I recommend you send them from another country by May 11h.

Swap details:
• All cards must be standard ATC size: 2-1/2” x 3-1/2”
• Cards must be sent in plastic sleeves.
• No copies; original artwork please! They can be similar, but must be different
• Flat cards, please. No thick embellishments
• On the back of each card write at least: your name, your swap name, and the country you are from (and your state, if you wish, if from the U.S.), and the country your bird represents.
• U.S. Players: send a SASE. Put your user name and the country that your bird represents on the back of both envelopes.
• International players: send an envelope (4” x 9-1/2”) addressed to yourself. Put your username and the country your bird represents on the back of both envelopes. If you don’t have a return envelope the right size, just send me a large mailing label with your address on it.

If you find you can’t participate in this swap after all, just let me know!

Please post your creations on this thread so we can all admire your work, not just the lucky people that get your cards!

When you get your beautiful cards in the mail from me, please leave “Rep Points” for each of the artists that made your cards. I would also greatly appreciate “iTrader Points” from you!

An extra bird card for me is not expected nor required, but boy would I love one!

So suppose I sign up for France I choose different species of birds that live here and draw 1 card with each?

03-21-2012, 01:47 AM
Hi Lea

If there isn't any official (or unofficial!) bird that represents France, than you can pick any native bird. You can do three different ones, if you like, or pick one and draw it three times.

03-21-2012, 02:23 AM
The gallic rooster (http://ambafrance-us.org/spip.php?article604)("coq gaulois") is our bird, so sign me up for a bunch of roosters!

03-21-2012, 11:20 AM
Welcome, lea67000!

03-21-2012, 08:18 PM
Here's the national bird of Belize, the keel-billed toucan, for inspiration for somone!

03-22-2012, 03:26 PM
Do you want the cards to be patriotic (like with a French flag) or rather roosters at the farm?

03-22-2012, 05:28 PM
Welcome, quoting mungo!

And, yes, you can absolutely cut-and-paste your own drawings! I requested this to be a HD/HP swap so that we didn't get any pictures printed off the internet slapped onto a card. But what you are describing would be fine!

03-22-2012, 05:34 PM
Hi lea6700; it's up to you!

I am intrigued with all the beautiful birds and how certain ones represent certain countries, but they can either be depicted in their natural habitat, or along with a patriotic symbol. However you would like to interpret that. As long as the bird is on there, the rest is up to you!

03-23-2012, 12:31 AM
Welcome eangelle! I almost missed you.. Good thing I re-read my posts for today!

wen nine
03-23-2012, 05:13 PM
Please sign me up. I'd like to do 3 different native New Zealand birds if that's ok. Probably Tui, Fantail, and Kahu.

03-24-2012, 01:23 PM
Welcome wen nine! I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

03-24-2012, 10:25 PM
Check out the national bird of the Bahamas!

03-25-2012, 02:25 PM
Welcome, BayBird! I'm looking forward to seeing how you depict that beautiful bird!

03-26-2012, 12:05 AM
Can I do the Flamingo, national bird of the Bahamas? I've always wanted to go there! I'm sure there's going to be lots of Bald Eagle players and even if I join a state swap, Florida's bird is the Mockingbird...a bit drab. I'd love to draw some Flamingos!

03-26-2012, 08:35 AM
I'll give this a try...I wanted to do a bird from a country I had visited, on the condition that probably nobody else would be likely to do the same bird (ie, I eliminated Canada and UK) and then some countries I visited don't have a bird listed (Egypt). So what I came up with is Peru's bird, the Andean cock-of-the-rock...not only colorful but also rather odd looking.

03-26-2012, 09:28 AM
My roosters are ready:

03-26-2012, 10:20 PM
Welcome, LilacDragn (nice user name...did you notice my avatar? :) )

Welcome, jo.on.the.go! Sounds like you're quite the traveler?

Welcome, nanette653! Aw, that sounds bittersweet! My daughter and I went on lots of trips together (Vancouver, British Columbia; wine tasting in California; Hawaii). Now she's married, so who knows when we'll travel together again?

03-26-2012, 10:23 PM
lea67000; I love your roosters, especially their tails!

03-27-2012, 09:16 PM
Thank you for signing me up...and yes, I did notice your avatar! :) My screenname is from my first tattoo...a dragon sitting on a rock playing with a butterfly. I need to have it redone, some of the ink came out of the butterfly and the dragon is a little more brownish-purple than lilac like it was suppose to be. I was 19 and the tattoo was free, the artist was a friend of a friend. Still love it though. :)

03-27-2012, 10:18 PM
LilacDragon - how funny! My most common character that I draw is my purple dragon, and I often draw him looking at a flying butterfly!

03-28-2012, 03:46 PM
I see a 1:1 swap in our future!! :)

03-28-2012, 06:15 PM
Here they are, the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruviana) birds, from Peru. I am ready to mail. Please PM your addy.

03-28-2012, 06:34 PM
I would LOVE to play in this. I'll have to get back to you on my bird of choice. Have some research to do! :) Can't wait!

03-28-2012, 08:36 PM
Alright, I have decided on the country of Nepal and the bird is the Himalayan Monal. I have ALWAYS been fascinated with Nepal, India, and Tibet. I chose Nepal because the Monal is very beautiful and is something I thought I could draw...:) hee hee

03-29-2012, 12:36 AM
LilacDragn: Oooh yes! Absolutely! :)

jp.on.the.go: Those look fabulous! I sent you my address.

RoOskie: Welcome! And, what a wonderful choice of bird!

03-29-2012, 12:54 AM
Thanks Thwarmp. I have two done, two to go. Great swap theme! :)

Loving the birdy artwork so far. Just checking if it is okay to do 3 different birds. Our national bird is the Kiwi, and I wasn't going to draw it cos I think it will be difficult, but of course I should give it a go. Although it's real cute, it's also just brown and has no wings. I'd quite like to draw a couple more colourful birds, but still native to NZ.

03-29-2012, 08:01 PM
Here are two of my Monals. Hope they work!

03-29-2012, 10:53 PM
Hi wen nine; when you first posted that you wanted to do various birds from New Zealand, I was wondering if maybe New Zealand was one of those countries that didn't have an "official national bird"; and in fact, two lists I found listed the kiwi as their "unofficial national bird". (Several countries don't have an official bird). So I figure that it is perfecty reasonable to draw some other native bird(s) As long as you pick birds that are native to New Zealand, that should be fine!

I think ithe kiwi is an absolute darling bird, by the way! Not very colorful, but soooo cute!

03-29-2012, 10:53 PM
RoOskie, I LOVE your Monals!!

03-30-2012, 12:14 AM
wen nin...I love kiwis too. Very adorable! :)

Thanks Thwarmp!

03-30-2012, 02:27 PM
Thanks quoting_mungo! :) They are beautiful birds! :)

03-30-2012, 07:28 PM
I would like to join! I am going to be visiting Iceland in June, so I will take Iceland's gyrfalcon.

03-31-2012, 04:18 PM
nettlefly ~ Welcome! And sure, a small amount of embellishments would be fine.

judoza ~ Welcome! What will you be doing in Iceland?

I can't wait to see what both of these birds look like!

03-31-2012, 05:11 PM
Hi, I would love to play! Can I do India? Never been there, no relatives, but love the bird, the Peacock! :)

04-01-2012, 12:24 AM
Hi Melanie; sure, go for it! I was hoping someone would choose India's peacock!

04-01-2012, 11:05 AM
Yay! I'm not entirely sure what I'll be doing in Iceland. A friend spotted a cheap flight deal, so we bought tickets and haven't planned much else. It will be an adventure!

04-01-2012, 09:24 PM
judoza; it sure does sound like a place for having a big adventure!

04-01-2012, 09:27 PM
ballerina ~ I'm wanting to keep this a "national bird" swap; some countries don't have an official bird, but they do have certain birds associated with their country. Check out the national bird of the island nation Dominica, the Imperial Amazon, or the national bird of the Cayman Islands, the Grand Cayman Parrot. They are similar to the beautiful Blue Fronted Amazon!

Do you have a bird?

04-02-2012, 01:53 PM

04-02-2012, 05:25 PM
Lurk away, oddbreed. Hope to see you back!

04-03-2012, 01:22 AM
Excellent choice, Sassynebrasky! That's a beautiful bird. I used to live in Guatemala; that bird is even on their money.

04-03-2012, 11:15 PM
Welcome, Hanne Alice! I put you down for the Mute Swan, the beautiful national bird of Denmark!

04-04-2012, 11:30 AM
I do all of my mail art through a PO box, which is not too close to my house, so I usually only go there on Saturdays, but today I happened to be in that area so I checked it out was thrilled to receive lovely cards from lea67000 and jo.on.the.go!

It's so fun to be a host and get to see all the cards "in real life". The colors are so gorgeous!

Nice work, both of you, and thank you for the extra host cards! Beautiful!

04-04-2012, 02:51 PM
I'm glad they reached you safely!

04-05-2012, 08:52 PM
We're finally getting a little bit of spring sunshine interspersed in our Pacific Northwest rain around here; the birds around here are loving it!

04-06-2012, 11:29 PM
Nanette says that her loons will be flying over to me soon! Can"t wait to see them!

04-07-2012, 01:15 PM
I wish we had the rain you had in the NW Thwarmp. We desperately need it!

04-08-2012, 01:37 AM
I figured you were a dancer, with that user name! How cool that you teach ballet! What ages do you teach? Were you a professional dancer?

The Red-billed Streamertail is a great choice. Thanks for joining!

04-08-2012, 01:45 AM
RoOskie ~ that's right, you guys have been really dry! It's true that even though we have a lot of rain, it sure is green around here.

04-08-2012, 10:16 PM
Fabulous balckbirds, quoting mungo! I love you you depicted the same bird so differently!

04-09-2012, 02:20 AM
Those are fabulous quoting_mungo!

04-09-2012, 10:24 PM
What do the eggs look like?

04-11-2012, 03:01 AM
Very nice! I first saw your post on my iPhone, so I couldn't see the eggs very well, but now I have. Pretty!

04-11-2012, 10:33 PM
Hi BlessedByArt; welcome! I'd love to see you do some Crowned Crane cards!

04-12-2012, 10:35 AM
If anyone else has sent cards and is wondering if I have received them yet, I have all of my mail art go to a PO box, and it's not too close to my house so I only go on Saturdays. I'll let you know this weekend if anything has arrived!

04-14-2012, 09:37 PM
I did my once-a-week trip to my PO box; no birdies from this swap have flown in this week (although I was thrilled to get some returns back from some swaps I played in!)

I know some are on the way; maybe I'll make a special trip this week to check! In the meantime, happy drawing/painting!

04-16-2012, 09:10 PM
ballerina - Where did you dance professionally? I'm glad you could continue in your field, when you weren't able to perform any more!

Sassynebrasky - I love your "quetzalito"! Thanks for posting! I can't wait to see the other ones!

04-17-2012, 09:42 PM
I agree! I can't wait to get them all together in person to see them!

04-18-2012, 04:04 AM
I agree! I can't wait to get them all together in person to see them!

That's my favorite part in hosting: having the chance to see all cards for real.

04-20-2012, 02:27 AM
Check out the National Bird of Papua New Guinea, the Raggiana Bird of Paradise!

04-21-2012, 12:55 PM
Off to do errands...including my once-a-week trip to the PO box. Eager to see if some birdies have flown in!

04-21-2012, 10:57 PM
Yay! Gorgeous cards arrived all the way from Sweden and Pennsylvania! Soooo pretty. Thanks, quoting_mungo and nanette653, for the extra host cards as well!

04-22-2012, 08:03 PM
Hi ballerina; I sent you a PM with my address. I can't wait to see your cards!

quoting_mungo; your birds certainly did come from far away!

04-24-2012, 12:51 AM
Woo hoo! I'm excited to see what you come up with! I have a soft spot in my heart for quetzalitos....

04-25-2012, 12:04 AM
I'd be very interested in signing up for this one. Australia doesn't have an official national bird, though most of the states have official birds. I would really like to do Crimson Rosella's since they are my favourite native bird. Would that be okay?

04-25-2012, 02:24 AM
Hi Hanne Alice; I sent you my address in a PM. Looking forward to seeing your cards!

04-25-2012, 02:26 AM
Welcome, LuvLoz! The Crimson Rosella sounds like a great choice! I'll add you to the list tomorrow.

04-26-2012, 11:32 PM
Nettlefly, I love your cards! I'm looking forward to seeing them in person!

04-27-2012, 10:46 PM
Deadline in less than a month! Since I only check my PO box once a week, I'm firm about the due date. Thanks!

04-29-2012, 02:32 AM
Hi BlessedByArt; I sent you my address. I'm looking forward to seeing your birdies!

04-30-2012, 06:40 AM
Your cranes are awesome!

05-01-2012, 12:28 AM
Wonderful cards, BlessedByArt!! I can't wait to see them for real!

05-01-2012, 11:04 PM
Check out the natioal bird of Cuba, the Cuban Trogon!

05-03-2012, 01:46 AM
Here's the national bird of Cambodia, the Giant Ibis!

05-04-2012, 12:28 PM
My flamingos flew the coop today. :)

05-05-2012, 01:16 AM
Awesome,LilacDragn; I can't wait to see them!

05-05-2012, 05:05 PM
Several flocks of birds were nesting in my PO box today! I'll open them later, but wanted to let you know I received cards from:

Hanne Alice

I can't wait to let them free from their envelopes!

I know more are on their way; I probably won't get to my PO box again until next Saturday, so don't worry if you've sent them recentlly and I don't mention receiving them during the week.

05-07-2012, 12:23 AM
No problem, BayBird. Thanks for letting me know!

05-07-2012, 12:02 PM
Just wanted to say that the cards I received on Saturday were gorgeous! And, thanks every one of you, for each sending me an extra host card!!:cute:

05-08-2012, 12:34 AM
Just letting you all know that I changed my name from Thwarmp to ColorFly!

05-11-2012, 08:56 AM
I am unfortunately going to need to withdraw from this swap. I didn't get the cards done during my leave like I thought I would. Sorry.

05-12-2012, 12:02 AM
Thanks for letting me know, LovLoz. I hope to see you in a future swap!

05-13-2012, 12:26 PM
Went to my PO box yesterday, and picked up flock of birdies from:

SassyNebrasky: Love the quetzales! And in various styles! Thank you for the extra host card :)

LilacDragn: Pretty, pretty flamingos! Both realistic and whimsical! Thank you for the extra host card and blank cards and textured papers! :)

Eangelle: Great job on the Bald Eagles! Nice touch with the flag in the background. Thank you for the extra host card! :)

Here are my birdies. I had fun drawing the kiwi after all, so here's the first two - Brown Kiwi and baby Kiwi.

05-14-2012, 02:04 AM

and here are two Great Spotted Kiwi.
They are flying your way ColorFly.

05-14-2012, 10:46 PM
Oh my gosh, wen nine, those are ADORABLE! I'm so glad you made four cards so I can have one too!!

05-17-2012, 03:33 AM
I am going to try to get these done in the next few days.

05-17-2012, 09:11 AM
Wen nine, your kiwi are wonderful! Sure hope I get one!

05-17-2012, 04:56 PM
Great, Melanie, I look forward to seeing them!

05-18-2012, 09:46 PM
Colorfly...I'm so sorry. I must withdraw. I know I already have two cards done but won't be able to get the other two done. I was just told today that I'm moving classrooms from one to another and need to be done by Monday. I'm so sorry. Will you forgive me?

05-18-2012, 10:09 PM
Haha, of course RoOskie! Hope to see you in another swap.

05-18-2012, 10:27 PM
Thanks ColorFly! :)

05-19-2012, 06:21 PM
Wen nine, your kiwis made it safely here!

05-23-2012, 02:04 AM
Oh no, these last few days zipped by and I was unable to complete my cards. I'm so sorry, I'm going to have to drop out.

05-23-2012, 07:49 PM
No worries, Melanie. Hope to see you in another swap!

05-24-2012, 05:16 PM
Returns went out today, a little early! I had received all the cards I was going to receive, so I let the flocks loose!

05-24-2012, 10:18 PM
Woo hoo!! Can't wait! :)

05-27-2012, 07:29 PM
Thought you'd like to see what cards I kept; our own little swap gallery!

05-27-2012, 07:31 PM

05-27-2012, 07:34 PM
And two more! Thanks so much for playing. I loved all your beautiful art! Thank you for all the host cards!:notworthy:

I have one more "limited" swap, and then I plan to host a state/provincial bird swap!

05-29-2012, 09:50 AM
Holy cow! Your hostie cards are beautiful!!!

05-29-2012, 08:01 PM
Everyone's cards are outstanding!

05-30-2012, 10:40 AM
Got fantastic returns today!

05-30-2012, 06:48 PM
I received some amazing cards today! You outdid yourself, Colorfly. I love the instructions and the print. Thank you! Thank you so much to my wonderful artists too: jo.on.the.go (Andean Cock-of-the-Rock #4), nanette653 (Common Loon), and judoza (Gyrfalcon 1/4)!!

05-30-2012, 07:35 PM
Great swap, Lauri. And thanks to these wonderful artists whose cards I received:
wen nine, LilacDragon and nettlefly. What a treasure!

05-30-2012, 08:10 PM
Glad everyone has enjoyed it so far! You all made it an easy swap.

wen nine
05-31-2012, 04:56 AM
My gorgeous cards arrived today. Thanks to Blessed by Art, quoting mungo and nettlefly, and thanks to ColorFly for the Toucan print and for being a great host. Impressive artwork by everyone!
I couldn't do the 'you rock' thing for Blessed by Art, possibly because I've done it recently in another swap? I'll keep trying though :-)

05-31-2012, 12:39 PM
Glad you enjoyed the swap!

You will be able to give rep points (you rock) later on today; I'm not sure how long you have to wait.

05-31-2012, 03:21 PM
I think you have to rep a certain number of other people before you can rep the same person again. I have that happen a lot. I'll go into a thread give you rocks to the artists that post pics of their cards, then go back and leave a you rock for my artist before I forget. I think the timing thing is with itraders. I like to leave random you rocks all over the site anyway when I think about it, so sometimes I run into a problem where I've left rep to that person's post already and that will trip me up.

Did any of that make sense? :)

wen nine
06-01-2012, 12:32 AM
Absolutely. It will sometimes tell me I have to 'spread the reps around'. I'll give it a day or two to chill out.

06-04-2012, 12:09 AM
I asked Carole Cadek about Rep Points, and what the rule is; here is what she said:

"After you Rep some one you have to leave Reps for 8 more members before you can Rep the same person again.
Players can also post a visitors message on their fellow players Profile Page, if they can't leave a Rep. This way the player still finds out who received their card."

I didn't know all that!

06-04-2012, 08:26 AM
I wish icould have entered this one, but it came at the wrong time for me. Great birds everyone!

Did you know utah's state bird is the Californian gull? Weird, eh?

06-04-2012, 10:14 AM
I didn't know that! Pretty funny.

I'm planning on hosting a State/Provincial Bird swap as one of my next swaps. Does New Zealand have official birds for each province?

wen nine
06-05-2012, 09:17 PM
Umm, ColorFly, we're way too tiny for an official bird for each area! Unofficially there are regions known for specific birds. Unfortunately some are because they're endangered and are being protected to try and boost populations.

06-05-2012, 09:49 PM
I received awesome cards last week from: jo.on.the.go (Andean Cock-of-the-Rock #2), nanette653 (Common Loon), and LilacDragn (Flamingo #3). Thanks so much to all of you, and to ColorFly for hosting and the great print! I hope I can sign up for the State/Provincial Bird Swap!

06-05-2012, 10:20 PM
Hi judoza; I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'll let you know when I host that swap, and you can decide if it will work out for you.

wen nine: I had the idea for a State Bird swap, and then I thought I'd try to include any other countries that had official birds for their smaller regions. Too bad New Zealand doesn't have that, there are so many awesome birds from there!
