Samples by themuppet (top line), BigKay and rubyragdoll (middle line), and HotMamaRama and Cindyjob (bottom line)

This is my third time running this swap, so I can tell you with complete confidence that it is a) easy; b) liberating; c) fun; and d) hilarious. Even if you're not usually comfortable drawing, you should pretty much join right now.

To make your cards for this swap, simply close your eyes and draw a face. You can do this over and over and over, because each face takes oh . . . 30-60 seconds. Once you have several faces you like, finish them out into complete cards like the examples above, complete with backgrounds of some sort. It's as easy as that!

If you want to throw some mixed media in the background, go for it. If you want to go to Starbucks and draw real people without looking at your pencil or paper, go for it. If you want to have a glass of wine while making cards for this swap, go for it. Just please make sure that the cards you submit come from your best drawings and look like cards you would want to own forever. Personally, I have two giant displays of cards from these swaps in my house, and I love them eternally.

Rules of the Road
- All cards should be the standard size: 2.5” x 3.5”.
- All cards should be sent in plastic sleeves.
- All cards must be original, and each card must be different. Please do not make copies, submit prints, or create three virtually identical cards.
- Please don’t use hard, bulky embellishments, which upset postal machines.

Mailing & Postage
- When you're ready to mail, please PM me for my address.
- Make sure your name and user name (at a minimum) appear on the back of the card.
- US Participants, include a SASE, business size, with enough postage to cover the mailing of your cards.
- Internationals, you can send a self-addressed envie or a large label; I'll cover the postage.
- Please mail your cards early so they arrive on time.

- When you receive your returns, please leave iTrader for me and rep points for the artists.

Oh ye powers that be. This sounds deliciously demented. I'm going to try...mostly because I think my faces look terrible to begin with! :D

04-09-2012, 12:34 AM
I'll tell you right now that even when I watch myself drawing a face they are awful so I know my 'blind' drawings will be much worse, but this is such an intriguing idea to me I feel like I must try it. Please include me. Thanks.

04-09-2012, 02:24 AM
Sign me up, please. I haven't done this before, but you are darn persuasive...

04-09-2012, 02:47 AM
okay Miss Lady,,,,,I'm in. Do we scan the before card? how will we know what we start with??

04-09-2012, 03:29 AM

04-09-2012, 08:31 AM

Ok, I'm in! I always have fun with this one! Sign me up pretty please with sugar on it.

04-09-2012, 11:08 AM
I had vowed "no new swaps", but how can I pass up something I can do with my eyes closed? Count me in.

04-09-2012, 11:12 AM
Woooooo! Welcome, everyone! I'm so glad you're here!

muppet, I am all blushy-happy that you like this swap so much. I do, too! It's the thing that helped me stop freaking out and start enjoying the act of drawring.

04-09-2012, 11:15 AM
DADAology, most people do scan the original face like muppet did in the sample at the top. It's not mandatory or anything, but it is fun to see how the cards evolve.

04-09-2012, 12:06 PM
What a funny idea for a swap. I'm in! Please sign me up.

04-09-2012, 12:46 PM
Thanks Ann Will do....

04-09-2012, 08:59 PM
YES! I'm so glad it's finally happening! And welcome, JJ!

04-09-2012, 09:07 PM
I had so much fun doing this the first time....I can't pass it up....I love to see the before drawing...and then what was created from it (like the example from Mupp)...once you start it becomes hard to stop....

04-09-2012, 09:11 PM
This is way too cool to pass up and I was avoiding new swaps for awhile...well that lasted a total of 1.35 days.

Sign me up!!

04-09-2012, 09:42 PM
XD i would love to try, try being the key word, i cannot promise pretty here, not looking will be quite a fun challenge!!!!!!!!

meredithu: "I was avoiding new swaps for awhile...well that lasted a total of 1.35 days."

04-09-2012, 11:33 PM
Yaaaaay! So glad to have you back, artsylady, and Mere and Mrs.Alderman, I'm thrilled you're here!

As for the keeping your eyes closed part, Cindy Jo will attest that this is true. I so DON'T trust myself not to peek that I a) remove my glasses; b) close my eyes; and c) cover my eyes with my hand. I'm sure I look utterly ridiculous.

Mere, that was a hilarious line. I kind of want to steal it.

04-10-2012, 07:16 AM
This is so much fun. :D I thought I'd show you the blind sketches now so we'll see how they end up looking later on. :D

04-10-2012, 09:41 AM
Steal away, Ann-er.

As per your instructions- it works!!

04-10-2012, 10:08 AM
NatashaMay...no fair! Your blind sketches look much better than the sketches I do with my eyes wide open!!!!:)

04-10-2012, 10:09 AM
NatashaMay, those are awesome! I can't wait to see what they become! :D

Garneteve, of course! Welcome to the party!

04-10-2012, 10:20 AM
i would love to play, AnnD! :D

04-10-2012, 10:28 AM
Lol debs! I was surprised they came out looking like actual faces. I was hoping I'd be doing some monsters.

NatashaMay...no fair! Your blind sketches look much better than the sketches I do with my eyes wide open!!!!:)
That's what I was going to say! :twitcy:

Ann, I SO want to do this! But instead of covering my lens-less eyes, I will be taping my ATC down and holding a piece of very opaque card stock (read: NOT white) directly under my chin to avoid looking.

04-10-2012, 11:47 AM
Yay! Welcome, amyfaerie! Your cards for the last ones kicked ass!

Cat's Cradle, that sounds like a good plan. Are you in, then?

Thought that's what I said. But maybe I haven't had enough caffeine. Yes. I'm in!

04-10-2012, 11:59 AM
YAY! Just making sure!

Cat's Cradle
04-10-2012, 12:08 PM
Might have my kids do this as an exercise as well. If they do, I'll have to show them on the thread just for S&G.

04-10-2012, 12:31 PM

thanks, AnnD! I loved making these last time 'round!

04-10-2012, 02:32 PM
*deep breath* Me please!

04-10-2012, 02:34 PM
CynthiaSillitoe, you're in! Are you taking a deep breath because this is a challenge? Or because we haven't showered? Because I swear . . . we will. Probably. Tomorrow.

Amy, I'm attaching one of your ATCs from the first round as an example of how people can work this in with a mixed media background. :)

Cat's Cradle, totally! Please do post them!

04-10-2012, 02:38 PM
Because it's a challenge, but a good one. I'm working on being an artist who draws. :) Now if you all hadn't showered, I'd be trying not to breathe at all.

04-10-2012, 03:08 PM
I'm done! :D Are these ok?

Cat's Cradle
04-10-2012, 03:16 PM
Wowza! Those came out of your blind drawings you showed us? Very cool!

04-10-2012, 03:22 PM
WOW, Natasha! Those look absolutely amazing! I love the girl with the crown and the one with the rainbow necklace!

04-10-2012, 04:49 PM
Can I play?

04-10-2012, 05:58 PM
Of course! Love to have you, miss!

04-10-2012, 09:20 PM
Okay this was really HARD! I kept trying to make my faces really large and it felt like they were completely covering the cards. Whoa...NOT! Also, all of them really wanted to look to the left. The one on the brown card I purposely tried to make it look right...and managed everything, but one eyeball which swung WAY left. What's up with that? Here's my batch of "befores".

04-10-2012, 09:31 PM

Sign me up to please!!

04-10-2012, 10:29 PM
Oh Deb, I think those could go in all kinds of cool directions!

djl1050, 1orange, and Picky Pie, welcome to the party!

04-10-2012, 11:23 PM
You know I'm in the middle of a move, right? Yeah, well...after a really tough couple of days, I just grabbed some cards, pencils and pens, and started drawing. Inking and colouring to go, I'll have this done in plenty of time, so although I do NOT have time for this, apparently I have time for this. Put my name on the list, plz...

04-10-2012, 11:43 PM
LOL. It's good therapy in the middle of a move! So glad you have time for this even though you don't have time for this!

04-10-2012, 11:54 PM
P.S. My husband just walked up behind me and made a startled and exclamatory noise at the sight of my pad full of blind drawings, after which, this exchange ensued:

J: "That one is SO GOOD!"
A: "Thanks! I like him."
J: "Of course you can't use him, but he's great."
A: "Why can't I use him?"
J: "He's too good! He looks like you drew him with your eyes open!"
A: [Incredulous look]
J: "Okay, except for the nipple head."

04-11-2012, 12:27 AM
J: "Okay, except for the nipple head."

OMG! I cannot possibly go lay down right now and try to go to bed because I am laughing like a hyena!

04-11-2012, 12:56 AM
Okay, I haven't even beGUN your moley yet, Ann, but I just finished four faces. That's right..finished. Sometimes we get inspired. And I promise I did NOT look, not even peak, until the drawing phase was complete. In my defense, I have practiced - and taught - blind drawing for decades. So here they are, Lily, Brad, Old World, and Trustafarian.

04-11-2012, 01:01 AM
XD!! nipple head what?!?! you must share mr nipple!!!!!!!!!
i started sketching a few and learned i must do them in pen so i cant "fix" them. lol

04-11-2012, 01:06 AM
btw...another method to ensure you don't look is to sit at a table with your paper in your lap on a hard surface (book) UNDER the table. I actually find I do better if I draw while looking at something, there's a connect that happens between my eyes and hand. I used to question it, now I'm just grateful. :-)

04-11-2012, 03:52 AM
Oh my, I almost missed this. Can I join?

04-11-2012, 03:53 AM
Cool! Els is in da house! :) I must join Copic sensei! Please add me!

04-11-2012, 04:23 AM
Els, those are fantastic! :) The blondie is awesome! :D I wanna see the nipple head Ann.

Els, Love the blond!

04-11-2012, 10:33 AM
Els, I love that you have to defend yourself for being too good at this. They are fantabulous! And I have it on good authority that I don't mind waiting on the moley to get to have those in the swap! ;)

Evalila and MelanieS, welcome!

I totally know what you mean, Mrs.Alderman! It's very tempting to fix them - but way better when you don't!

04-11-2012, 10:46 AM
i have been gone for awhile and i am just returning ,but I would love to join in this swap if you would allow me to.

04-11-2012, 10:49 AM
Of course, playsdolls! I think we traded a very, very long time ago - possibly in a PIF thread. Welcome to the swap!

04-11-2012, 12:29 PM
Thanks AnnD can not wait to get started on the fun.

04-11-2012, 01:31 PM
Looks like fun! Please add me.

04-11-2012, 02:16 PM
This is your chance to let that pencil go wild and free, Mellanie! Glad to see you here.

And MelanieS? Your use of "sensei" brought a BIG smile to this face. Thanks!

And thanks for all the kind words, everyone...the blond is my fav, too.

04-11-2012, 02:28 PM
Ann, you HAVE to make that guy into an "Elderly Conehead." The top of the head is perfect for a droopy cone. Especially given the reproductive means of the species. ;)

04-11-2012, 02:43 PM
Hahaha! I just might! :D

Genxster, I'm so glad to see you here!

04-11-2012, 03:15 PM

04-11-2012, 03:28 PM
Sounds like fun, I want to join too. :)

04-11-2012, 03:30 PM
Just when I've sworn off ATCs you go and lure me back in with my favorite thing in the whole wide world!

04-11-2012, 03:49 PM
Yaaaay! I don't want you to swear off ATCs forever! ;) Seriously, so glad to see you again, jazzie! You, too, halla!

04-11-2012, 04:15 PM
Wow! This seems like so much fun!
May I join, please? :D

So, so fun, BayBird! Love the Statue of Liberty hair on the first one!

04-12-2012, 12:37 PM
You folks make this look so easy (and purdy!) Good work, people. Deb, your Mr. Lee was a perfect use of that pout.

I'm (not so) secretly hoping someone channels :elvis: via blind drawing (ahem!) Jason saw nipple head, I saw pompadour. :D

04-12-2012, 12:53 PM

04-12-2012, 06:47 PM

04-12-2012, 06:52 PM
OKay, I wasn't going to share, but now I think I should...

I saw a boob that perhaps had too much volleyball and the saline implant had gone awry.

It is post #70!

04-13-2012, 10:32 AM
I am way too scared to join this swap, but my BCM (BlindContouringMuze) talked me into it, so, if you will have me, I'll have to join, she forces me! She fell in love with Mr Nipplehead...

04-13-2012, 11:13 AM
LMAO! Your BCM is a very wise Muze indeed. Don't be scared, Boekwrm. You can make lots and lots and lots of blind drawings and play with them all you like before you pick the ones to submit. You will absolutely love it! And I'm putting you in right now before you change your mind!

04-13-2012, 12:09 PM

04-13-2012, 08:20 PM
Hey Ann! I told my kids about their upcoming blind drawing exercise and they are excited.

Delbert (9) is planning to draw Sami (7) while she, in turn, draws him. Simultaneously. Should be interesting. They keep asking if they can look at the card while they color them. :biglaugh: I told them yes, but I should have said no just to see the looks on their faces. They also want to finish your nipple-head drawing just for fun.

I've already decided that for my cards, I'm gonna look at my kids and draw their faces. And the nipple-head, of course.

04-13-2012, 08:39 PM
How fun does that sound?!

For the past two years, we've done blind drawing games on my birthday. Helps give my parents something to do instead of having awkward divorce and remarriage and extra kids and more remarriage dynamics, which are NOT my idea of birthday fun.

04-13-2012, 08:40 PM
If there is still room, I would like to join (she said rather timidly). This looks like alot of fun and challenging!

04-13-2012, 08:41 PM
There is room, and I demand that you join (she answered extremely boldly). It's totally fun - and addictive!

04-13-2012, 09:59 PM
AnnD this is just for me... the challenged ARTist ;) I believe I can do this! Sign me up please

04-13-2012, 10:24 PM

04-15-2012, 08:06 AM
Fun, Fun, Fun

Amy, Locatray, Baybird and Halla...Those are why this is one of the fun-est swap themes ever.... I've got a sheet filled on both sides with blinds..I want to start on these like RIGHT now, but I have to finish up a couple other things first...

04-15-2012, 09:00 AM
these are all awesome! :notworthy:

04-15-2012, 09:44 AM
please put me on the waiting list

04-15-2012, 09:55 AM
Oh my gosh, what a cool bunch of drawings! Amy, love your style...your faces are so whimsical and the backgrounds are to die for! Locatray love how you took the "sharp" features to make a tough babe with tattoo :D Baybird, yours are grand...and no background is needed for number 3...he's pretty cool as is. Halla the lumberjack made me laugh out loud :D

04-15-2012, 02:44 PM
OMG, that tennis player is too adorable! Love those, BayBird!

Halla, I am a great lover of long faces. Those are fantastic!

JavaZarf, I will put you down!

04-15-2012, 04:09 PM
OK Here are mine. Hope they are not too simple. This was sort of liberating for me! I remember having a drawing class where we did this sort of stuff.

I was going through the thread and Ann I went crazy about your lady in the tub , just LOVE her!

04-15-2012, 04:26 PM
Those are really fun, SunTrade! I love the yellow shirt!

04-16-2012, 02:45 AM
More emerge every time I'm stuck somewhere, waiting. A WHOLE lotta people serving as inspiration. I didn't realise you wanted to see the before pics, too, but will scan before I colour from now on, though there's no real difference in mine between the basic drawing and the coloured version.

04-16-2012, 09:44 AM
Awesome awesome cards everyone! Had to catch up looking at them all this morning!

04-16-2012, 10:30 AM
Els, the "before" shots are entirely optional, but I think people do enjoy seeing them. :)

04-16-2012, 12:03 PM
The first cards have arrived! Mikesatcs, your cards are here, safe and sound.

04-16-2012, 03:47 PM

04-16-2012, 04:33 PM

04-16-2012, 06:14 PM

04-17-2012, 10:45 AM
I'll PM you!

04-17-2012, 04:08 PM
I want you to know just how wicked you are to have started me doing this again. Now go get in your vehicle and drive west until you get to my house, bring your gloves and work clothes, and any anti-inflammatories you might need after helping me pack and move rather than sitting and drawing! Wicked, wicked Ann...

04-17-2012, 05:02 PM
*Cackles behind throw pillow*

I'm so sorry, Els! I'm sure I didn't mean to be so wicked! ;)

djl, your cards arrived today!

04-17-2012, 08:18 PM
I semi- agree with Els!! I made 4 cards and all I think about is making more..........but who would want them? Anyway, they are wicked-fun to make and thank you for making me step outside my comfort zone and stretch!! 3 cards came out "ok" and one- very cool. I may need to "practice" more and make a couple more of them before I send you what I made. Cheers!!

04-17-2012, 09:34 PM
During the first swap, there were a bunch of people doing private trades for their extras. HotMamaRama must have made 10 cards - and they were fabulous!

04-18-2012, 03:13 PM
locatray, your cards are here!

Cat's Cradle
04-18-2012, 03:43 PM
Printed off your "noodle-head" last night, and my youngest (2 1/2 yrs) snagged a sheet and started coloring. She immediately saw Avatar Aang and started trying to draw the arrow tattoos! No pics, though, as Bug also has hidden her art from me.

04-18-2012, 04:28 PM
Hahahaha! Classic.

04-18-2012, 04:50 PM
Not sure I'll make the A list, but add me to the wait list and I'll be happy to play at the last minute if necessary! TY

04-18-2012, 04:56 PM
Ann, i agree with els. You are a brat. I did cards like that for my first abstract swap and now i wanna do more. I may do that for pochadivas its a colored face world swap since youre all full up.

04-18-2012, 05:16 PM
maggiebloom, I will put you on the waiting list!

04-19-2012, 03:05 AM
Great idea for a swap! I will work on some just for the fun of it...may I be put on the waiting list just in case a spot opens up, please :)

04-19-2012, 09:58 AM
Absolutely! I'll add you to the list, Essy!

04-19-2012, 05:04 PM
Thank you Ann!

04-19-2012, 09:07 PM
Here's one... fun exercise! I drew several and was surprised at how similar they all were. I had to concentrate on doing different expressions or styles. Another great swap for improving, Ann! The ATC is titled, "Misplaced'.

04-19-2012, 09:42 PM
She's wonderful! And I know exactly what you mean about the similarities among drawings. You can try doing them with reference photos, too. I did a blind Spock today that almost kind of looked like Spock. You know. Almost. ;)

04-19-2012, 10:19 PM
I'd like to be added to the wait list for this swap!
It sounds so fun!

04-20-2012, 10:14 AM
Picky Pie, those are a joy! I love how happy Martha looks to be all neckid!

chanelledcreations, those are so much fun! I'm guessing the first one is the alien, the middle one is the cheeseburger guy, and last one is the beauty salon lady??? *Crosses fingers*

04-20-2012, 11:58 AM
Wooo! *Does high kick*

04-20-2012, 12:41 PM
The artwork here is great!

04-23-2012, 01:01 PM
Deb, your cards have arrived!

04-23-2012, 01:46 PM
I spent the morning drawing and scanning faces. Tomorrow I'll see if I can turn them into something. :) It's definitely been fun so far!

04-23-2012, 02:19 PM
I know I'm not in this swap but it was such a fun idea that I had to make a couple. Here they are....

04-23-2012, 03:07 PM
Artdujunque-GENIous!! You might get some 1-1 trades off of those!!!

04-23-2012, 04:48 PM

04-24-2012, 10:34 AM
MelanieS, I will let you know as soon as they get here. They're so cool, and I love Medusa's expression!

ArtDuJunque, you may not be in the swap, but your cards are a huge hit! :D

04-24-2012, 10:46 AM
This swap was so much fun....I thought I posted my cards, but alas, I must not have hit the right button. Anyway, here are my cards that are in the mail. I busted out the color pencils and had a blast.

04-24-2012, 11:25 AM
Fantastic faces, guys! :)

04-24-2012, 02:27 PM
OMG, how adorable is Brenda?!

04-25-2012, 08:04 PM
Is it acceptable to have one not entirely in color? Perhaps partial color or dare I , just black and white? Just one?:err: Maybe?

04-25-2012, 08:08 PM
(my favorite blind drawing EVER was in black/white/gray... just sayin' ;) )

04-25-2012, 08:45 PM
Well the first ever swap that I participated in, I made all my ATC's black and white. A few participants seemed to like them. I seem to recall AnnD was one of them ;)

04-25-2012, 09:15 PM

I frequently use Zentangle inspired bits in my art, and I actually prefer to work in black and white...or at least monochrome!

04-25-2012, 10:00 PM
Oh yeah, totally, JJ! I have one in gray scale by that same artist muppet is alluding to (I'm pretty sure), and it rules!

04-25-2012, 10:17 PM

04-25-2012, 10:58 PM

04-26-2012, 12:38 PM

04-26-2012, 02:43 PM
My pleasure!

04-26-2012, 07:46 PM
Okay then. Here's a little taste. It's not quite finished yet. Before and after:

04-26-2012, 07:48 PM
Reverie- de-lish!

04-26-2012, 08:07 PM

04-26-2012, 08:12 PM
Haha well maybe I'll do more than one like that hmmm?:biglaugh:

04-26-2012, 09:30 PM

04-29-2012, 09:11 PM
Two down, two to go. :)

04-29-2012, 10:14 PM
Go Cynthia!

I did a blind drawing of a family friend yesterday at a Magic tournament. In the end, I'm not sure whether he was amused or horrified. I heard him asking someone else later, "I don't really look like that, do I?" LOL!

04-30-2012, 06:52 AM
Go Cynthia!

I did a blind drawing of a family friend yesterday at a Magic tournament. In the end, I'm not sure whether he was amused or horrified. I heard him asking someone else later, "I don't really look like that, do I?" LOL!

And did they reply "yes, yes you do look just like that"?

04-30-2012, 07:34 AM
Looks like I missed out on this one. I didn't get my drawings finished before you were full. Nevertheless, I was inspired and started the 3 Blind Mice Swap.

Perhaps, you'll join us.
Take care.

04-30-2012, 11:31 AM
Those mice are so cute, kat! What a clever idea!

Russell, alas, no. They reassured him. Jerks.

04-30-2012, 02:06 PM
Ok, just checking....if the faces are hand-drawn, it's ok if there's mixed media? Mine seem to want found poetry with them.

04-30-2012, 02:50 PM
Absolutely! Go for it!

04-30-2012, 02:52 PM
Ok, thanks. :)

04-30-2012, 09:05 PM

DeepDarkHana, your cards are here!

05-01-2012, 01:05 PM
Mine are done. I hope to get them scanned and in the mail. They were a blast to make! :)

05-01-2012, 04:31 PM
They really are so fun. I might have to make another one tonight. It's all stormy and nasty and depressing here!

05-02-2012, 10:49 AM
I have my blind starts done (took a moment and drew them this morning) now just waiting for them to speak to me so they can tell me who they are.

05-02-2012, 02:29 PM
Russell, I am digging the 'stache already!

My blindys for the sharing (and my first blindys ever!) They scanned a little freaky cuz I'm at my seester's and her scanner hates me.

The faces were no-peeky, and then I just went with it on the rest. Out came a Tibetan Monk, an ant party in the pants, and Quasimodo. Naturally. :dull:

1 Art Lady
05-02-2012, 08:12 PM
Waiting to see what crops up! Russell, they look like you have some great "wiggle" room! Can't wait to see! I have been drawing the kids at school... not happy yet, but they are all wondering why I am staring at them! Ha!

05-02-2012, 08:32 PM
LOL. Drawing them without peeking is the best reason ever!

05-02-2012, 08:48 PM
whoa Nanner cool artz. :-)

05-03-2012, 01:37 PM
Ok, I had way too much fun with these. I probably won't get them in the mail until next week, but here are the scans:

05-03-2012, 01:38 PM
And these:

05-03-2012, 02:21 PM
Cynthia those are great! I love the style. Nice job!

05-03-2012, 03:50 PM
I like the red and green cards before you re-touched them up, I'm weird that way, they just look good to me.

05-03-2012, 05:24 PM
Cynthia those are great! I love the style. Nice job!

It's the sharpie you sent me, so they should be good. :)

I like the red and green cards before you re-touched them up, I'm weird that way, they just look good to me.

I did, too, but they were a little too minimal. (They're a lot smaller than the scans.)
